The charity, dedicated to bringing gaming to disabled individuals worldwide, celebrates the deep accessibility options present in Bioware’s MMO.
If you’ve never heard of AbleGamers, here’s the scoop: The organization, founded in 2004, focuses on bringing expensive accessibility technology to gamers with disabilities, thus enriching their lives by providing them with fun entertainment and a method for interacting with the online world. AbleGamers also lobbies for accessibility options in games that allow people with a variety of disabilities to more easily enjoy the titles.
Star Wars: The Old Republic has just been named AbleGamers’ 2011 Accessible Mainstream Game of the Year, a title that, while not catchy, recognizes the immense work Bioware put into making their massive MMO accessible to all gamers.
The charity cited full subtitles, colorblind graphics setups and flexible control schemes as the primary reasons for the award, with president Mark Barlet noting, “It's very rare to see a game of this caliber initially released with so many accessibility options.” He also stated that thanks to Bioware’s work on accessibility, the great majority of disabled gamers would still be able to enjoy SWTOR.
Nice work, Bioware!
Do you think developers have a responsibility to make their games accessible to individuals with disabilities?

The maker of World of Warcraft is concerned over the potential security risks posed by the recent hacking of another popular MMO.
We reported last week that Rift, a very popular MMORPG published by Trion Worlds, had suffered a major security breach. The hackers assumedly didn’t get any credit card information, but user passwords may have been compromised. This led Trion to reset the Rift passwords for all users, just to be safe. They also awarded players a special item that awards players 10% more gold when looting, in case they had to take the realms down.
Today, Blizzard fired a message out to World of Warcraft subscribers via its official Twitter account, stating that if you use the same password for more than one game, it may be a good idea to change it. Since Rift password information has potentially been compromised, it’s safe to assume that clever hackers may try that information to access accounts in different games.
Blizzard didn’t call Rift out by name, referring only to “one of the more popular MMOs,” but the message is clear – if you play Rift, make sure your password is safe. If your Rift account and WoW account share similar information, both are at risk regardless of which developer is compromised.
This is an interesting moment for the world of gaming. No matter how amazing Blizzard’s internal security may be, they’re only as strong as their users and the other games those users play. Seems frustrating, from a security perspective.
Did you get caught up in the Rift hack? And do you use the same password across several sites/services?

Looking for a cheap last-minute gift or a game to play while you ignore your family? Pick up Limbo!
Limbo has won a zillion awards and was easily one of the biggest XBLA games of 2010. Since its initial success, PlayDead has done everything they can to expand their stranglehold on the indie market, releasing the game on every system to which they can get access.
Limbo is your basic platformer, where your primary goal is to run from one end of a level to another without being killed. But the vague nature of your location and purpose help to create an intriguing experience, not to mention the monochrome visuals and eerie environment. Limbo is one of the most successful games ever released on XBLA, selling over four million copies to date.
Since its initial release, Limbo has been brought to PC and PS3 – it managed to sell more copies than any other PSN game in 2011. As for the iTunes Store, Limbo is priced at a mere £6.99 – more than worth the cost considering the escape it can potentially provide you during this upcoming holiday crush.
Limbo is set for release on Steam in January, officially putting it on almost every popular distribution platform. It’s nice to see an indie developer do so well.
Have you played Limbo? Would you consider picking it up on your iOS device?

A French court finally settles the Namco vs. CD Projekt distribution dispute, in Namco’s favor.
The legal battle between CD Projekt and Namco Bandai over the publishing rights to The Witcher 2 has been raging for the last few months, with Namco bringing suit against the developer for violating previous contractual agreements. Essentially, Namco Bandai secured the rights to publish the Xbox 360 version of The Witcher 2, and was surprised when CD Projekt later announced that the game would be published by THQ instead.
This is one of the primary reasons the Xbox 360 version of the game has yet to see a release – with no clear indicator of who the publisher was going to be, no one could really start printing discs. But the decision, handed down by a French court, officially awards distribution rights for western Europe, South and central America, and Asia-Pacific to Namco Bandai.
CD Projekt has 15 days to come up with a publishing agreement. If they fail to get it sorted out, they’ll be fined €15,000 for each day beyond the initial 15 days it takes to get it done. If you don’t live in Europe and you’re unfamiliar with the Euro/Dollar conversion, €15,000 is about a zillion American dollars.
CD Projekt has noted that they’re not very happy with the decision, but they don’t plan to fight it and are moving forward with the agreement. Look for The Witcher 2 on your Xbox 360 sometime in 2012, probably close to spring.
Is anyone even waiting for this game on the Xbox, or did people already play it on another platform?

The indie game managed to best big-name opponents like Portal 2 and Pokémon to take the top prize at one of the Europe’s biggest games festivals.
GameCity is a massive video game convention/party that took place in Nottingham, U.K. last week. The festival, which is more than a trade show, is focused on connecting gamers with developers and exploring the nooks and crannies of gaming culture. Each year they award one game a grand prize, and this year a bright-eyed newcomer managed to snatch the title away from some of the biggest brands in the business.
Face with competition from games like Portal 2, LIMBO and Pokémon Black/White, Minecraft took the show’s top award. One interesting element of how the game is chosen – GameCity puts a jury together of people that don’t usually play games, comprised of celebrities and academics that play each game over a certain period of time preceding the festival. This gives the grand prize award a special twist, since it’s mostly free of the influence of brand loyalties or media hype.
While it’s fun to see an independently developed game earning some recognition, it’s also not much of a surprise – Minecraft is already a critical darling and has been downloaded millions of times by gamers that developed an immediate passion for its free-roaming content. The game is technically still in development, but look for plenty of other awards to come its way as soon as the retail version goes live.
Would you say that Minecraft is better than Portal 2? Better than Pokémon? Sound off in the comments.

Find out what games real gamers selected as the best of the year, from a contest that earned over two million votes.
GamesMaster’s Golden Joystick Awards are different from other award given out in the games industry, because the people who select the winners are the people that play the games. The Golden Joysticks compile their list of winners based exclusively on votes from players, which means there are not usually any big surprises when the winners list comes out.
One could note that since the votes really only represent the popular gaming mind, excellent but less-known games don’t have much of a chance of winning. Either way, the awards do help us get a pretty good idea of what gamers liked in the last few months, and what they’re still playing. You’ll notice a big wins for Mojang (Minecraft), Ubisoft (Assassin’s Creed) and Rovio (Angry Birds), but the year clearly belongs to Activision/Blizzard (StarCraft, World of Warcraft, Black Ops and Guitar Hero). It probably doesn’t hurt that most of the titles on the list seem to be available for more than one system.
Here’s the list, compiled by GamePro:
Action/Adventure Game of the Year: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Mobile Game of the Year: Angry Birds Rio
Roleplaying Game of the Year: Fallout: New Vegas
Massively Multiplayer Online Game of the Year: World of Warcraft
Fighting Game of the Year: Mortal Kombat
Racing Game of the Year: Gran Turismo 5
Sports Game of the Year: FIFA 11
Strategy Game of the Year: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
Music Game of the Year: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock
Free to Play Game of the Year: League of Legends
Downloadable Game of the Year: Minecraft
Shooter Game of the Year: Call of Duty: Black Ops
One to Watch Award: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Innovation of the Year: Nintendo 3DS
Outstanding Contribution: Sonic the Hedgehog
Ultimate Game of the Year: Portal 2
I’m pretty surprised to see the 3DS on the list, since it gets a lot of flak from players and the press, but I guess there weren’t’ many other innovations to speak of.
Remember that winners are taken exclusively from games that game out within the last 12 months, so don’t throw a hissy fit if your favorite game isn’t there unless you’re sure it’s eligible.
That being said, do you see anything in this list worth throwing a hissy fit over?

Grab your lasso and find the nearest train crossing, because Rockstar’s western epic is now available with enhanced features and extra content.
Red Dead Redemption: Game of the Year Edition is now available for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 consoles. This special edition of the game comes with the original title, all of the previously released downloadable content and a brand-new “hardcore” difficulty setting.
The original Red Dead Redemption, according to Rockstar, raked in a whopping 160 Game of the Year awards. There’s no doubt that the game was well received, and if you haven’t had a chance to play it there’s no better time like the present. The GOTY edition will run you $49.99, but with all the added content you’re getting a pretty fair discount compared to what early-adopters paid.
In the meantime, it still looks like PC gamers are out of luck when it comes to Red Dead Redemption, as Rockstar has gone on the record as feeling that releasing the title to PC systems isn’t financially viable at the moment. While I’m not sure what that means, since there’s an obvious demand for the title, we’ll still have to wait and see if Rockstar decides to change their minds.
The events of Red Dead Redemption revolve around former gang member John Marston and his attempts to track down his wife and daughter. After participating in a bust gone bad, he’s left wounded and is only saved by the kindness of Bonnie MacFarlane. From there, he slowly builds his health back and tracks down gang members one by one until he can live in peace with his family. Then, zombies show up (DLC), as usual.
Are you planning on picking up this new and improved version of Red Dead Redemption?

BioShock Infinite doesn't only look spectacular, it's also set to tell an amazing story.
Ken Levine of Irrational Games, is guaranteeing as much in a recent interviwe with NowGamer. According to him, while they definitely worked hard on making the game look how it does, they've taken more interest in ensuring that there will be a story that will hook the gamers to it.
"I don't tend to think about BioShock Infinite on the spectrum of over the top or radical things. It's more about what's creative about it, or how the technology allows a creative endeavour.
We're not looking to create the hottest new tech demo. We're thinkg more along the lines of, 'What do we need to sell this story of a floating world?'
It's important to have tech at hand to support what is visually going on, and I think our lighting model started moving abit more into the tech side. In terms of power, I don't think lighting like our deferred model is the kind of thing that is necessarily exciting for gamers. It's the kind of thing they probably don't know much about."
BioShock was recently hailed as E3 2011's big winner, bagging no less than 75 awards from media, proving that it is indeed in terrific shape thus far.

bioshock-infinite-thumbIn Ken Levine's own words, they have pretty much been "S.O.B.s" in teasing about BioShock: Infinite so far, but they're out to make up for that now.

As it turns out, BioShock Infinite gave quite the show at this year's E3. 2K Games and Irrational Games' multiplatform collaboration got a whopping 75 awards, with mainstream press E! Online dubbing it "simply gorgeous".
Among the awards it got were 39 "Game of Show" awards, and the top award that can be taken home from the event, The Game Critics Awards. Said Ken Levine, "At this year's E3, members of the Irrational team were honored to see the amazing games our industry friends and colleagues are producing. And we are thrilled that the gaming media selected BioShock Infinite as a standout title for the show."
BioShock is slated to come out for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 next year. It's also been confirmed to include Move support. A PS Vita spin-off has also been confirmed. Needless to say, those 75 awards reaffirm what the devs have been saying all along: that it's so far in terrific shape.
