super_mario_bros1We all like to look back fondly upon the game we played growing up. Hanging out with the kids in the neighborhood, playing Super Mario Bros or Sonic the Hedgehog to see who could get the furthest, etc. And we often like to say those were better days for video games. But is this reality or pure nostalgia?

It's not just you who finds the PC version problems for Rage frustrating. id Software boss, John Carmack, is one with you on that, actually. After all, they did aim to make no delineations in quality for both the console and PC versions.
Said Carmack, "We have had video drives issues that have caused problems and frustrations with our PC fans. Everyone at id Software is very upset by these issues which are mostly out of our control. We are working with both AMD/ATI and Nvidia to help them identify and fix the issues with their drivers."
As Tim Willits further corroborated, when the game was submitted to the "build system", they found the console versions to be "solid and bug-free." Unfortunately, the PC ones weren't.
What matters more to them now is to make sure that these issues be addressed immediately and efficiently. "We've had assurances that these problems are being addressed and new drivers will be available soon," said Carmack.
"We knew that all older AMD drivers, and some Nvidia dirvers would have problems with the game, but we were running well in-house on all of our test systems. When launch day came around and the wrong driver got released, half of our PC customers got a product that basically didn't work. The fact that the working driver has incompatibilities with other titles doesn't help either. Issues with older/lower end/ exotic setups are to be expected on a PC releaes, but we were not happy with the experience on what should be prime platforms."
In the end, this was what Carmack had to say about the issues that arose on their PC version of Rage -- and it's going to be quite controversial once again, definitely.
"We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games. That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterize it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version. A high end PC is nearly 10 times as powerful as a console, and we could unquestionably provide a better experience if we chose that as our design point and we were able to expent the same amount of resources on it."
To cushion the driver ssues, Bethesda had previously offered PC Performance tips to PC gamers. Oh well, them's the breaks. Rage set out to have it all, but unfortunately, the PC version just couldn't catch the wave alongside the console ones.

Ó

EA's keen on expanding its business venture, with its latest project being EA Origins, their new download service. Now, a lot of people can't help but see it as some sort of competition for Valve's Steam. The suspicion rose all the more when Crysis 2 was taken out from the Steam Store.
EA maintains their ground, however, that they are not gearing for a fight. EA's David DeMartini tried to downplay the issue in a recent interview with Gamasutra, saying that, "Obviously when a big publisher comes up with their own application and launches a site where you can buy games directly, people immediately jump up to the conclusion that means they're going to exclude everyone else. "
"We believe in absolute freedom of choice to allow customers to buy through whatever retail outlet... as long as they're buying an EA game, we're delighted. We feel like if you buy the product with Origin, where we're going on a long-term basis is we'll integrate some of the Origin feature set into many of our highest-profile IP... but by all means if your preferred retailer is Best Buy or Direct2Drive or Impulse or Steam or Amazon... we're going to make our product available to you."
To further justify, he concludes with this statement: "I am absolutely not at this point saying, 'hey, it's Origin versus Steam.' It's never been about that."
Sounds like all should be fine and dandy, right? But if you look closely, it sounds rather forced. Take note of that operative "at this point" phrase. But of course they're looking to win over Steam, at least insofar as their catalogue is concerned.
They'll start with their own titles, and then most likely, they'll expand to other services and products. Question is, can they really handle the bull by its horns? The atmosphere of competition definitely is thick in the air. But frankly, one really can't take it against EA if they choose to go this path given that it's about the only course they have if they want EA Origins to take off. What better way to promote your own service but through your own existing brand and products, right?
Nonetheless, Steam remains to be the biggest online distributor in the market today. And while there doesn't seem to be any visible and solid threat from EA Origins, there most certainly is an impending one. With EA's vast catalogue of titles most likely to not be seeing Steam's light of day ever again, they will have to bank on their roster from other publishers still supporting their service.
Despite their denials of an existing competition, though, if you were to take sides, whose would you pick? EA Origins or Steam?

ea-originThe fight is brewing, and no denial from either camp can temper the terse atmosphere.

Ó

Just last week, Silent Hill: Revelation was announced as the latest iteration in the movie franchise of the Silent Hill universe. Today, we find out that more of the old crew are stepping in and coming back to make the horror title just a bit more homey.
Apart from lead stars Adelaide Clemens (Heather Mason) and Kit Harington, the following actors will be coming back to reprise their roles:
Radha Mitchell (Rose)
Sean Bean (Christopher)
Deborah Kara Unger (Dahlia)
The film is reportedly being filmed currently in Toronto, and will be based on a screenplay written by director Michael Bassett.
So Bassett said on the recurrence of roles in the movie, "It wouldn't be the same without some of the original Silent Hill cast. Sean, Radha and Deborah's return will certainly thrill fans of the franchise and compliment Revelations stars Adelaide and Kit."
As for cinematographer Maxime Alexandre, "With the most advanced technology available, in particular the lighter, smaller and more flexible 3D Red Epic, we are able to take audiences deeper in the world of Silent Hill than they ever dreamed possible.
Devotees will finally be able to enter this realm along side of Heather, Vincent, Harry and Rose and experience the psychological horror and the fear of the unknown with them."
The production execs composed of Samuel Hadida and Don Carmody also worked on the recently produced Resident Evil: Afterlife.
Said Hadida of this new Silent Hill movie, when it was first announced: "We are all excited to have the Silent Hill team reunited in Toronto for the sequel to one of the best horror franchises of all time.
With Michael at the directing helm, we will be building on the first film and taking the Silent Hill story into new territories with exciting storylines and visuals that will grab both new audiences and those familiar with the Silent Hill franchise."
As an additional treat, they've also sent out this new still from the Revelation production, featuring Mitchell.

Others have been quite vocal about what they perceive as the dangers it poses to the console gaming industry. When it comes down to the numbers, research firm Nielsen says that gamers spent less on console and other non-mobile releases in 2010 while spending more on mobile games.
