An invitation-only reveal at GDC promises to unveil the next generation of game building technology.
Unreal Engine is one of the core building blocks of the games industry. Countless classic titles have been built using one version or another of Epic’s engine, from Batman: Arkham City to Mass Effect 3. And it looks like Epic is ready to unveil the next iteration of its powerful game authoring software—to very specific people.
The company has confirmed that Unreal Engine 4 will be shown at this year’s Game Developers Conference, scheduled to begin March 6 in San Francisco. However, the engine will not be on public display; only a select few individuals will have the privilege of viewing the software in action. Those individuals, mostly partners, customers and prospective customers, will be bound by NDA.
The NDA, apparently, is in effect due to Unreal Engine 4 running on next-gen technologies that can’t be discussed in a public forum. You know, like those top-secret Microsoft and Sony projects that are perhaps less secret that the companies would like to admit.
If you’re a fan of Epic, you’ll still have a chance to interact with the company at GDC. Tim Sweeney, Rod Fergusson and Cliff Bleszinski will be participating in 15 events over the course of the week, all of which are open to any attendee that wishes to participate.
Are you excited to see what Unreal Engine 4 will bring to the table?

Metacritic’s numbers are in, and top honors go the Batman brawler.
Batman: Arkham City was obviously one of the best games of 2011. The game launched to both critical and player praise, and was one of very few games this year to earn a few perfect tens. Now, it looks like once all the reviews are tallied, Arkham City may actually be the most well reviewed game of the year.
Metacritic has just published its official top-rated games list for 2011, and the top ten should come as no surprise to anyone that played games last year. Arkham City took first place, followed by Skyrim and all three versions of Portal 2. Here’s the full lineup, courtesy of Destructoid:
1. Batman: Arkham City (PS3, 96)
2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (Xbox 360, 96)
3. Portal 2 (PC, 95)
4. Portal 2 (Xbox 360, 95)
5. Portal 2 (PS3, 95)
6. Batman: Arkham City (Xbox 360, 94)
7. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D (3DS, 94)
8. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim (PC, 94)
9. Mass Effect 2 (PS3, 94)
10. Minecraft (PC, 93)
Not really any surprises on this list, through the presence of different game versions does end up locking out a few games that should have been up there. That being said, we’d like to offer a congratulations to Rocksteady for topping the charts, as well as to all of the other developers that made a showing.
Would you call this list an accurate representation of the best of 2011?

The barrage of online passes continues, this time landing in one of Vita’s top-selling launch titles.
Japanese players that picked up a copy of Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational with their shiny new PlayStation Vita have discovered an interesting requirement for the game: namely, the necessity for an online pass in order to access the game’s online multiplayer. While one of these passes is included with all new versions of the game, players that picked the title up used will have to invest in a separate code to get online.
Hot Shots is just the most recent in a series of games tied down by online passes, limiting the used marketplace and ideally putting more money into the pockets of developers. However, some gamers don’t believe the online pass system is fair – and neither do some game designers. Twisted Metal creator David Jaffe went on the record as opposing the online pass system for the upcoming TM game, noting that used sales often inspire new interest in the brand.
That being said, if you want to jump into Hot Shots Golf’s online mode and you don’t have an online pass, you can pick one up for 900 yen (around $11). This marks the first portable game I can think of with an online pass requirement – what do you think of the online pass system?

In a slow news week, there is only one hope: an insane gamer dancing his heart out for 16 hours straight.
Apparently, there’s such a thing as the “Longest Video Games Marathon on a Dance/Rhythm Game” world record. And, apparently, there’s such a thing as “person who wants to hold the record for longest video games marathon on a dance/rhythm game.” This person, ladies and gentlemen, is Alexander Skudlarek.
Skudlarek is now the world record holder for the ridiculously long-titled record mentioned above, a title he earned for playing Dance Dance Revolution for a whopping 16 hours and 18 minutes straight. It may not sound like that much time compared to some Skyrim or WoW marathons, but you have to remember –DDR is a dancing game. How many of us have ever danced so hard?
The record was set back in October, but no one really knew about it until this week, when Skudlarek contacted Destructoid and helped save both them and us from an incredibly slow news day.
It may seem silly but hey, it’s a word record – I sure don’t have any to my name. So we at QJ would like to offer belated congratulations to Alexander.
Never stop dancing, buddy.

Growing evidence indicates Blizzard was serious about bringing Diablo III to a console near you.
Remember earlier this year, when Blizzard talked about bringing Diablo III to consoles? The company was clear about its intent to explore a console release for the long-awaited sequel, but there’s a big difference between “exploring a release” and “actively developing.” We’ve got some new fuel to throw on the fire today, in the form of a job posting published by the company earlier this week.
The new job, listed as Console Network Senior Software Engineer, has one primary responsibility when it comes to Diablo III:
“Design, implement, and maintain networking related game systems for the console game.
Identify previously unknown issues and offer solutions.”
So there you have it. Diablo III is almost certainly headed to consoles – eventually. There’s still no confirmation from Blizzard, nor is there any type of release date (as is the company’s custom). But if they’re hiring people to work specifically on the console version of the game, you can expect to see it in your PS3/Xbox 360 game section soon enough.
Assuming, of course, it doesn’t go the way of StarCraft: Ghost.
Would you play Diablo III on a console?

Video games used to be the domain of the nerdy basement dweller. Now, they’re changing the way in which we interact with friends, family and strangers.
Last night, I went to a wonderful pizzeria in Chicago to celebrate a friend’s birthday. Drinks were had and merriment was made, and at some point during the night conversation turned to Skyrim. One of my friends was curious about the game, and wanted me to explain the basic gist of how it works. As I was explaining the game, someone at the next table over exclaimed “Are you talking about Skyrim?!” We confirmed, and the guy immediately abandoned his girlfriend to join our table so he could tell us about how awesome his one-hander wielding Spellsword was working out.
It was a strange moment – despite not knowing the guy (or his poor girlfriend), we instantly had a shared experience from which to draw. Our digital adventures in Skyrim translated into a real-life connection, and thanks to that game, we all made a new friend. This type of gaming bleed is becoming increasingly common; it seems like everywhere you go, you run into another fan of games with something to say.
Gaming used to be derided as a hobby for nerds and loners. But huge MMOs are changing the way in which we hang out with distant family and friends, and big-budget titles are giving us a way to interact with strangers we never imagined possible. It’s an incredible experience to connect with a random person, and games are quickly becoming one of the most common ways to do so. How many of us have never thrown a subtle nod to someone wearing a Horde shirt, or a Cog hat?
As gaming continues to spread into the mainstream, these types of interactions will happen much more often. And, frankly, we’re all better off for it. Sometimes the most valuable experience gaming can bring us is something that happens in real life as a result of our shared passions. As gamers, our passions often get the best of us, but every now and then, they translate to something truly awesome.
Have you ever connected with a random person due to a love of gaming? Tell us your story in the comments!

Here they come: the very first games of the new year. Find out what’s coming in this week’s “On Shelves.”
Well, the holidays are officially over. New Year’s is just a couple of days away, and its passing marks the end of one of the most incredible years in the history of gaming. 2011 gave us Skyrim, Portal 2, Deus Ex and Bastion, not to mention countless other brilliant games.
2011 is almost behind us now, but we’re still in that dead zone between Christmas and NYE. Which means, unfortunately, that there isn’t much happening in the world of game releases.
Here’s what you can expect to see launching this week:
Guild Wars Complete Collection
PC
ESRB Teen
NCSoft
That’s it. Most gaming companies aren’t in a hurry to release a game during this holiday vacuum, so we won’t be seeing a return to the regular launch schedule until the middle of the month.
In the meantime, this week is an excellent week for catching up on other games, or sinking even more hours into Skyrim.
How are you spending your dead zone week?

Users are reporting serious problems with the PC version of Saints Row the Third.
2011 has definitely been the year of the buggy launch. We’ve seen Origin issues, an unavailable CoD Elite, Skyrim crashes, an inoperable Arkham City and a barely functioning RAGE. It certainly seems like developers had a hard time putting the final layer of polish on their games this year, and Saints Row the Third is apparently no exception.
Players of the PC version of Saints Row the Third are reporting that the game’s outdoor settings (of which there are many) cause their systems to slow down immensely, making the game nearly unplayable. The glitch only occurs in Saints Row’s open world – you know, the open world that’s supposed to be the entire core of the game.
Volition is working with users to get the issue resolved. They’re taking dxdiag files and talking to people on the official Saints Row and Steam forums in order to get some idea of what’s happening – the problem isn’t limited to AMD or NVIDIA hardware, so it’s going to take them some time to lock down.
While it’s nice to see the company interacting with players and trying to fix the problem, the immense number of broken titles we’ve seen this year is an interesting, and slightly alarming trend.
Do you think developers are getting sloppy?

It’s time for gaming outlets across the globe to drop their top ten lists, but we’d rather know what you think.
It seems like everyone in the world of gaming journalism is wrapping up the year with top ten lists galore – top ten games, top ten games by developer, top ten disappointments, etc. We here at QJ aren’t immune to the listing phenomenon, but rather than compile our own list (which would probably look similar to those already published), we figured we’d take the whole thing to our readers.
What we want to know is which games captured your imagination this year, which games you loved and which games you thought didn’t get enough attention from the gaming press. We’d also love to know which games you thought were the most overhyped, or the most disappointing. Feel free to drop your own list in the comments – we’ll be reading them!
Here’s a quick reminder on some of the big and notable titles of the year:
L.A. Noire
Batman: Arkham City
Portal 2
Modern Warfare 3
Bastion
Star Wars: The Old Republic
Assassin’s Creed: Revelations
Saints Row the Third
Battlefield 3
The Witcher II
Dungeon Siege 3
Dead Space 2
Gears of War 3
Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
Minecraft
Super Mario 3D Land
Dark Souls
Whew – that’s a lot of games, and we’re sure we missed a few somewhere in there. So sound off and let us know – which game was the most fun, which was the most beautiful, which is the one you’ll play the longest?

AP has finished its list of the best games of 2011, and it’s surprisingly good.
2011 was, from any way of measuring, a massive year in the world of video games. We saw tons of excellent indie releases and more AAA chart-burners than any reasonable person could have time to play. Now that the year is winding down, it’s time for gaming publications all over the world to start compiling their annual “best of lists,” with the Associated Press leading the pack.
Despite not being a game-specific outlet, AP has put together a relatively strong listing. Taking top honors is Portal 2, but Bastion, Skyrim, Arkham City and even Rayman are represented. Here’s the full top ten:
1. Portal 2
2. The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
3. Dues Ex: Human Revolution
4. Bastion
5. Batman: Arkham City
6. InFamous 2
7. The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword
8. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
9. Rayman Origins
10. Dead Space 2
Wow. I had completely forgotten Dead Space 2 was this year. Long year for games, I guess!
Do you see anything on the list you’d like to dispute? Any games missing? Sound off in the comments.
