Apple celebrates 25 billion apps downloaded through its iTunes Store.
Today is a very special day for Apple, and for Apple lovers across the globe. The company has just reported that as of today, over 25 billion apps have been downloaded through the app marketplace built into the iTunes Store.
So what was the lucky 25 billionth app? Why, a game, of course! The free version of Where’s My Water, a puzzle title developed by Disney, took the honors. The downloader? An anonymous user in China. Apple should at least send the dude an iTunes gift card.
Since the creation of the iTunes Store, Apple has paid over $4 billion to iOS developers. Not too shabby.
Have you contributed to Apple’s ridiculous app sales? I certainly have.
Oh, and you can check out Where’s My Water right here: Where’s My Water?

Valve could be announcing Steam Box at GDC
What in the hell is Valve doing?
GDC is going on at the moment and I have a few friends checking it out, pitching games and showing off their work but with all the rumours flying around at the San Fran convention, I'd hate  to be a Valve employee right now.
The great big PC developer and probably one of the only game studios who I respect and will follow till they release Half Life 3 and with the idea of making a console, looks like I better start saving up.
Steam Box is the tentative title that everyone is dubbing it on the interwebs but i tlooks like Valve may throw their hat into the console ring and I think that the only way it will sell is if they make Half Life 3 exclusive to PC and their console...it will be the highest selling console ever.
The rumours were fueled that the company have been toying with the idea of creating a proper set-top console that could pose a threat to not only current-gen but next-gen consoles. Valve co-founder recently told the guys at Penny Arcade that if they had to sell hardware, they will. This could easily just have meant Valve branded graphics cards or just some cool memorabilia like keyboards, mice or even headphones but if they make Steam Box...the world of video games may change forever.
The story was broken over the weekend withG The VergeGFC

Game cloning strikes again in Apple’s iTunes Store.
It goes without saying that the great majority of games on the iTunes Store are rip-offs of games that came before them. Even those titles that aren’t blatant copies (Zynga!) borrow mechanics from older games that the mobile populace may never have heard of. However, there’s a very thin line between copying mechanics and outright plagiarism, especially when the copying is done explicitly to scam customers.
Apple is normally on the lookout for stuff like this, but they seem to have dropped the ball when it comes to Pokemon Yellow, a game released on the iTunes Store on February 17. The game, featuring artwork from the Pokémon series and claiming to be “just like the original,” is nothing more than a sneaky cash grab by an unscrupulous game developer.
The app apparently does nothing more than open and crash, and certainly doesn’t contain anything remotely close to the original Pokémon Yellow for the Game Boy. The app developer has even gone so far as to generate fake reviews for the game, one of which claims, “Just like the original. Only better because you can play it on the most intuitive device ever - the iPhone!”
It’s all bullshit folks, so save your $0.99. Now that gaming news sites have caught a whiff of the fraud, it’s only a matter of time before Apple pulls the app.
Still, one has to wonder how the thing got through in the first place.

And the best part? It’s free! Sort of.
Skyrim is a massive game. With over 300 hours of gameplay (before you count the infinite-quest generator), it’s safe to assume that even the most seasoned RPG gamers will need a little help tracking down everything. Prima, a noted name in the world of game guides, has just dropped a very handy tool for doing just that.
The new Prima interactive Skyrim world map is available on any device that runs on iOS 5, and is 100% complete. Every quest, retrievable item, dungeon and secret is laid bare on the map—for a price, of course.
You’ll get the world map and maps of each of Skyrim’s nine holds with the app, but if you want detailed maps (over 1,000 points of interest, dungeons, etc.), you’ll have to rely on in-app purchases. You can also add your own points of interest to the map, which supports zooms up to 3200%.
The full app, with every dungeon and point of interest, will run you $10. Not too shabby, especially when you consider that a printed game guide usually lands around $20.
What do you think of digital game guides?

Things have taken a decidedly dubstep turn in the world of SSX.
The music of SSX has long been one of the franchise’s most memorable features, and EA is continuing that trend with the latest iteration of the game. SSX is scheduled for release on February 28, but thanks to Game Informer, we have a sneak peek of what songs made the soundtrack’s final cut.
Here are the songs you can expect to hear while storming down the slopes:
See anything you like? There’s a pretty big mixture of music types in there, which is good news for people who may not want to listen to endless drops from Skrillex. Then again, we’ll have to see how all of the games feel in-game. The music remixes itself based on player actions, which means some music may make more sense in-game than out.
You can purchase the SSX soundtrack on iTunes, if that’s something you’re into.

Workers threaten suicide over conditions at Microsoft and Apple factories.
If you’ve never heard of Foxconn, here’s a quick primer: The company, based out of Wuhan, China, is the primary manufacturer of some of the most popular digital devices in the world. Foxconn employees piece together Apple devices and Microsoft game consoles, and they do so in terrible working conditions and for very low wages.
Things are so bad at Foxconn that the company installed safety nets around its on-campus housing structures to help limit the suicide rate of employees. And this week, news broke that indicates things aren’t getting much better over in Wuhan.
According to a Chinese news website, workers at Foxconn demanded an increase in salary. Instead, they were given two options: quit with severance pay, or continue to work at the current rate. The workers that quit never received their promised compensation, and over 300 of them took to the roof of a building and threatened a mass suicide.
Over the next 24 hours, the workers were eventually talked down – by the mayor of Wuhan. The incident was such a big deal that, according to one Chinese news source, it caused Xbox 360 production to be temporarily shut down. Everything seems to be under control now, but there’s no word on whether those employees received their promised pay.
This is just the latest incident involving Foxconn, and one of hundreds of examples of people being put through the ringer simply so we can enjoy our digital toys. Of course, companies like Microsoft depend on cheap labor to keep their price points low, and we depend on low price points to purchase all of the cool things we want. The question is whether there’s a safe balancing point – one that allows goods to remain relatively cheap, but doesn’t depend entirely on exploited labor.
What do you think? Are you concerned with how your electronic products are manufactured?

5th Cell is prepping a brand new platformer, set for release this Thursday.
5th Cell recently brought its Nintendo DS hit, Scribblenauts, to Apple’s iOS software. The game was a smashing success, and even managed to topple Angry Birds from the top software slot for a couple of weeks. With performance like that, it’s no wonder that the development company is targeting their newest game, Run Roo Run, directly at the iOS market.
As you can see, Run Roo Run operates in much the same way as Robot Unicorn attack - your character automatically runs across the screen, and you have to collect goodies and avoid hazards as you go. The one major difference is that in lieu of scrolling across an infinite screen, your auto-running will be limited to one screen length. 5th Cell dubs this setup “microplatforming.”
You can expect to find a whopping 420 levels on launch day, with increasingly complex and difficult problems. Plus, you’ll unlock “extreme” versions of every level as you go, giving you a total of 840 levels to play. 5th Cell has promised 10 new levels every week, free of charge.
Not too shabby for mobile gamers, eh? Watch for Run Roo Run on the iTunes Store tomorrow, January 12.

MMO's launch with the wrong business model
With a focus on high profit and low content, large scale MMO's are doomed, according to Gene Hoffman.
Gene Hoffman is the CEO of the payment firm Vindica and has been focusing on MMO's for the past couple of years. Helping with titles usch as Star Trek Online, Rift and Champions Online, Hoffman believes that a weak launch period has forced a lot of companies to adopt the F2P model. Hoffman said some of the MMO's that are launching are "really bad", but that you don't want to say "that too loudly to them," but that you also need to tell them they need "a lot more content before they launch."
Hoffman suggested the possibility of a "paid beta" and to tell the users that it's pretty good and that you'll be able to play. Also tell the developers and users that you're "not going to fill the whole world until three months from now," but if they sign up now, they'll give them the game free after release. Hoffman also suggested other business models.
Hoffman also said something about how Apple's 30 % revenue was ridiculous, but that's neither here nor there, he is right about the MMO models. There has always been something other than my lack of time that has pulled me away from playing MMO's. More often than not, it's just something I'm either not interested in or will not continue to be interested in. To give a good example, I heard about APB some time ago back in 08 and the idea of a GTA MMO was great to me, but after a rocky start, I was quite turned off to the idea.
The game went into post-release hiatus then returned later this year and now has 3 million users worldwide on the free-to-play model. The game is quite good from what I've heard, but even though it's free, I probably won't be playing it any time soon without some better word of mouth. Hoffman knows where the best MMORPG's are at when it comes to having a balance between content and price and that a lot of games are simply not doing either.

The 10-year anniversary edition of one of the most beloved games of all times hits iOS devices today.
Love Grand Theft Auto III but can’t be bothered to pull out your PS2 or backwards-compatible PS3? Perhaps you want to steal cars and murder prostitutes at a local coffee shop or while waiting for a holiday flight? If that sound like you, then Rockstar Games’ 10-year anniversary edition of GTA III is exactly what you need, and it’s available now on the iTunes store.
Don’t have an iPad? No worries - according to the iTunes entry, the game is supported on “iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod Touch 4, iPad 1 and iPad 2.” I’m not sure how enjoyable GTA III would be on an iPhone, but I can certainly see potential for the iPad version.
The game has been optimized for a touchscreen interface, received a slight makeover with HD textures and contains all of the classic Grand Theft Auto action you’ve come to expect from the franchise. This is basically the game that started it all, so if you haven’t played it you should definitely give it a look. The mobile version is raking in near-perfect review scores – it’s worth the $4.99.
What is your favorite Grand Theft Auto III memory? Are you going to pick up the iOS version?

Windows, Android and Apple heat up in mobile development race.
Has 2011 been the Year of the App? Let me check if there's an app for that.
The  games industry has been flailing between entire network's going down and companies wondering what their next move will be, whilst mobile's have gotten slightly bigger, a lot friendlier and a lot smarter. With Android proudly annoucing it's ten billionth download this month, what is on the card's for other developers when it comes to phone apps and especially, games.
Well, the 10 billion for Android has shown that there's a larger market outside of the iPhone app crowd, which is fantastic as without any kind of independence, there would be no competition for Apple to continue to "look" like it's fighting for. Meanwhile, in the land of Windows, Microsoft has just announced something fantastic for would-be developers of their Windows 8 Phone's....an 80% cut of the profits.
Whilst that may look desperate to some, the actual revenue gained for making an app for other developers varies so wildly. A recent study of over a hundred developers working for Apple and Google showed  that the mean average for a life time development for applications (games or otherwise) was just over a hundred thousand dollars. More often than not that hundred thousand was not part or full time indie developers but actual iOS companies, according to StreamingColour.
The more and more people develop for one platform or another the more of a saturation there will appear to be. Much like how the Wii was flooded with shovel-ware titles, the iPhone app store has a lot of charlatans looking to sell you something that was coded  over a weekend and probably just plays the Nyan Cat theme with a 128kbps mp3...is there an app for that?

PS Vita will have fill support for Adobe Flash, if Sony has anything to say about it.
The brawl between Flash and mobile developers has flashed hot over the last few years, with Adobe recently announcing it would discontinue mobile development to focus on HTML-5 solutions instead. The announcement seemed like a victory for Apple, which for years has resisted bringing Flash applications to its phones and tablets. Flash is still a major part of most people’s web experience, and the software enables thousands of internet users to watch videos and engage interactive content.
Sony seems to disagree with Apple on the subject of Flash’s usefulness, and is currently in negotiations with Adobe to bring the service to the PlayStation Vita. On the one hand, it’s a savvy business move that ensures Vita owners will have access to as much online content as possible. On the other, Adobe’s recent shift in focus to HTML-5 hints that Sony’s push for Flash support may have only been savvy if executed five years ago.
Sony execs have confirmed that they’re still working with Adobe to try to find a solution that will work for both companies, but the tone of the interview doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Muneki Shimada, development head of Sony’s division two, indicated that negotiations are ongoing and Sony hasn’t “given up.” Something could be lost in translation here, but it certainly sounds like Sony is dealing with an intransigent group of Adobe developers reluctant to develop their software on another device.
Either way, the future of Flash on both the Vita and on mobile platforms is in doubt. If negotiations are successful, however, Vita would earn one more selling point to help put it ahead of its competitors.
Do you think Flash support is an important feature for a handheld gaming device?

The sequel to one of the best-looking mobile games ever made has some serious problems on the original iPad and iPod Touch.
Infinity Blade II hit digital shelves yesterday, and while the game has earned praise from most fans and critics, some gamers haven’t been able to enjoy the game at all due to a pesky bug with older Apple hardware. Apparently, generation one iPads and older iPod Touches may experience performance problems when running the game, depending on how many apps you currently have installed.
Epic Games, the company behind Infinity Ward, is well aware of the problem and hard at work on a solution. The developer is aiming to patch the game “ASAP,” so keep an eye on your little blue App Store icon for the notification that an update is ready. The basic problem arose because Epic didn’t test the game on fully loaded devices, instead using test devices that had only the game and a couple of other apps.
As we know, iOS is prone to clutter and a large number of apps, combined with the hardware requirements of the game, are causing older devices to run out of system memory. There’s no official timeline on how long a patch will take, but I’d expect one within the next week or so.
Have you experienced any Infinity Blade II issues?

Two of the biggest names in mobile gaming have no interest in seeing a ratings system levied against them.
ESRB ratings are both good and bad for the games industry. On the one hand, they keep mature content away from young kids, but on the other, they hinder developmental freedom by forcing developers to target certain age brackets with their titles. If you ask people for opinions on what the ESRB does, you’ll probably find one opinion for each person you talk to. But, regardless of our personal opinions, the ESRB has a major influence over the world of game making.
Looking to expand its role into the rapidly growing mobile market, the ESRB, working with the CTIA, recently developed a rating system for mobile games, similar to what is already in place for other games. Microsoft, Sprint, Verizon and a few other big names are behind the new ratings system, but Google and Apple have officially declined to participate. This means the iTunes Store and Android Market will remain ESRB-free, for now.
It makes perfect sense from the outside – the big names that are onboard aren’t app companies, they’re mostly cellular providers. Google and Apple are really the only two companies that stand to lose anything with a new ratings system, with the possible exception of Microsoft. Of course, Microsoft is already participating with the ESRB on non-mobile games, so their hands are probably tied. Still, you have to wonder if this decision will have any major impact on either mobile marketplace.
What do you think of Apple and Google’s decision to keep the ESRB out of their games? Would you do the same if you were in charge?

Over 1,600 cheating cheaters have been banned from the game since its launch on the 8th.
There’s something uniquely “Call of Duty” about glitching and cheating. I’ve played plenty of online games, but glitchers seem to be more prevalent in the Modern Warfare games than any other. That’s not to say that there aren’t millions of awesome players working hard to build a great community, but the franchise always seems to have a bigger-than-average collection of bad apples.
Luckily for us nice players, Infinity Ward is watching Modern Warfare 3 carefully and staging precision missile strikes on the accounts of sneaky, unscrupulous gamers.
Robert Bowling, the voice of Infinity Ward in most situations, recently announced on Twitter that the account team there has banned over 1,600 accounts and counting. He goes on to state that any attempt to cheat or hack will be met with a zero-tolerance policy.
Infinity Ward is working hard to fix some of the exploits discovered, such as one that allows infinite stealth bomber runs and a number of basic clipping problems. Most games have a few minor issues at launch, and there doesn’t seem to be anything on the scale of Modern Warfare 2’s care package glitch, so MW3 is doing just fine. It needs a bit of help from its players right now, but most multiplayer matches are being executed without any troubles.
Have you run into any cheating cheaters in MW3 matches? If so, use the post-game report feature to let Infinity Ward know, and share your stories with us!

Bethesda offered free games for life to any parents willing to name their kid Dovahkiin, and one pair of passionate fans went ahead and did it.
What’s in a name, right?  A few weeks ago, Bethesda made an interesting offer to fans – name your child Dovahkiin, which apparently means dragonborn in Skyrim’s pretend language, and the company will give you every game they make, for the rest of your life, completely free. It sound’s a like a devil’s bargain, but I suppose there are worse names in the world. Apple comes to mind.
Eric and Megan Kellermeyer named their kid Dovahkiin Tom Kellermyer, and since I have no idea how to pronounce “Dovahkiin” I can’t tell if the name has a ring to it or not.
The baby was born on the same day of Skyrim’s release (11/11/11) and the Kellermeyers contacted Bethesda, who was more than happy to make good on their promise. Happy, and probably a little surprised. The offer they made seemed almost like a joke, so it’s nice to see that they’re following through on it.
In the meantime, the young Dovahkiin can look forward to a lifetime of teachers and professors being able to make heads or tails of his name at roll call. Congratulations to the Kellermeyers!
And Dovahkiin, if you’re reading this twenty years from now, we’re all really sorry about this.
