If you received an email from the massive games retailer noting the cancellation of Team ICO’s latest project, you can go ahead and disregard it.
Despite the departure of one of its top devs, Team ICO is still continuing development on The Last Guardian. In fact, when the dev (Fumito Ueda) left, he confirmed that he would be finishing the game, just in a more freelance capacity. GameStop doesn’t seem to have gotten the memo, and earlier this week removed the game from their website and sent emails to gamers letting them know the game had been canceled.
Sony didn’t take too kindly to GameStop canceling a game on their behalf, and quickly issued a statement confirming that the game was still in development. GameStop seems to have gotten THAT message, though, and they’ve since issued an apology (to Kotaku, of all places) outlining that, no, the game hasn’t been canceled but yes, your pre-orders have been.
The game will be made available for pre-order again once a concrete launch date is established. In the meantime, it looks like this is just a simple misunderstanding on the part of GameStop – or Sony desperately trying to save hype for a game that may turn into vaporware.
What do you think?

Want to dodge super-long queue times for Bioware’s massively popular MMO? Watch out for these crowded servers.
It’s not uncommon for a new MMO to suffer from long queue times and crushing server loads, and a game with the sheer hype force of Star Wars: The Old Republic is likely going to be subject to more than average stress. Thanks to the incredible influx of new players since the game’s launch on December 20, Bioware has had to open up new servers and is slowly increasing population caps on some of the ones they already had in place.
They’ve also released a list of servers that are currently packed to capacity. They’re not blocking character creation because they want people to have the opportunity to play with friends, but they’re strongly advising against joining the following servers:
• The Harbinger -- US West Coast - PvE
• The Swiftsure -- US West Coast - PvP
• The Fatman -- US East Coast - PvP
• Bloodworthy -- EU English - PvP
• Frostclaw -- EU English - PvE
• Legions of Lettow -- EU English - PvP
• The Red Eclipse -- EU English - PvE
• Tomb of Freedom Nadd -- EU English - PvP
• Darth Revan's Mask -- EU German - PvP
• Darth Traya -- EU German - PvP
• Jar'Kai Sword -- EU German - PvP
• Hrakert Rift -- EU French - PvP
You’re still free to join one, of course – you’d just better be prepared for a ridiculous queue time. Things will naturally slow down once the holiday break ends and everyone’s hit a more regular play schedule, but for now, it may be best to stick with a less-crowded server unless you have a specific reason to join a crowded one.
What is your opinion of the way Bioware has been handling the SWTOR launch?

Surprise! Lots of people want to play Star Wars: The Old Republic, and the game’s developer is working around the clock to accommodate the sudden crush of new users.
According to the clock on my wall, Star Wars: The Old Republic still has about 12 hours before being officially released to the public. But early access and a few other interesting events have brought about a million players into the MMORPG’s digital world, and even though the game isn’t even on shelves yet, its servers are struggling to match demand.
As early access went online, there were 140 servers available on which to play. Now that queues on most have surpassed two hours during peak hours, Bioware is racing to add more capacity to the game before the massive wave of new players hits tomorrow. It’s not uncommon for new MMOs to be saddled with queue times – I remember waiting in line when I first started playing World of Warcraft – but there is certainly a point at which players will refuse to wait. Personally, I think anything over 30 minutes is enough to send players running.
Star Wars: The Old Republic stands to be one of the biggest launches of the year and one of the most impressively attended MMOs since WoW, so it’s up to Bioware to make that experience pleasurable for new players. If people are still on the fence about whether or not they’re going to move their guild to a new game, a two-hour queue certainly isn’t going to help sell SWTOR to them.
As noted, SWTOR already has a million players, and will likely see an increase of at least 500,000 in its first week of launch. EA and Bioware are hoping to land two million paying players in 2013, so hopefully they’ll be on the ball when it comes to balancing out the servers.
Are you in the early access program? What have your experiences been like so far?

Ó

Let’s talk about some of the things Bethesda could add to Skyrim without breaking the game.
Howdy QJ readers! We’re trying something a little bit different today, with a PoV in the form of a video. I’ve been playing Skyrim for around 30-40 hours and while there is lots to love about the title, there are a few things that seem like they could be improved. This video certainly isn’t a complain-fest, as I think the game stands on its own as is, but just a couple of thoughts on things I’d love to see implemented.
Here’s my Skyrim wish list, in video form:
I wanted to keep the video short, but there are a few other things I would love to see modified in the world of Skyrim. Here they are, in no specific order:
Follower Damage
I appreciate the fact that my loyal follower charges into battle with me, but is it really necessary for them to be vulnerable to my attacks? Combat in Skyrim is sloppy enough – I’ve killed my follower several times despite having my axe lined up directly with an enemy. I understand that killing your follower needs to be possible for the sake of freedom, but in combat it can turn into a real mess. There’s nothing more annoying than completing a tough fight only to accidentally shout your follower to death.
Vendor Selling
Having numerous vendors that only sell one or two types of things is a Bethesda trademark, but it starts to get annoying pretty early in the game. Here’s a quick sample of how my post-dungeon trips go now: Fast-travel to Whiterun, sell weapons and armor to the blacksmith until she runs out of money. Go inside the shop (loading screen), sell to the guy until he runs out of money. Go outside (loading screen), run to the general store. Go inside (loading screen), sell to that guy until he runs out of money. Go outside (loading screen), fast-travel to Markarth (loading screen), repeat. It’s a little much.
Horse Improvements
In addition to the horse problem I mentioned in the video, horses could use a big buff. What’s the point of spending 1,000g on a horse if it runs at the same speed you do? And the bonus carrying capacity is a joke – who is slowly walking all the way out of a dungeon to find their horse? Speaking of which – can we get a horse whistle or something? I can’t count how many times that horse has run off during a fight and I’ve just had to charge on without him after ten minutes of trying to figure out where he went.
Those are my rough complaints/suggestions. I feel like each one could be addressed with a relatively simple in-game fix, but I’m not a developer so I could be dramatically underestimating the complexity.
Do you have any features you’d like to see added to Skyrim? Let us know in the comments.

DC Universe Free to Play and Profitable
Looks like The Joker took a good portion of your money...oh wait, nope that was just Sony Online.
I always feel writing the small captions to entice readers in should be funny or at least related to the story or a quote, but that one was just ridiculous and I more than apologies. Well, it looks like DC Universe's switch to Free to Play has paid off with the game recieving more than a 700% increase in revenue in only a few weeks after going free to play.
That's not just oh, it's been a few months and it's up 700% it's actually up 700% for daily revenue. The free to play model started on November 1st and their boss John Smedley could not be happier about the decision, so happy he tweeted about it and has continued to for the past few days.
That 700% is split between the PS3 and PC version, with more Sony players (53%) than PC gamers (47%) are going for the new model, with an increase of players at 6% per day and with over eighty per cent are recurring players, who are buying new costumes, new skins and items on a daily basis.
Smedley tweeted that he was  "really happy with how [it was] doing." However, DCUO has suffered slightly in the past month as Smedley acknowledges, with more people, more servers and mo' problems.  There are a few stability and lag problems, and Sony has said that they are working to increase the capacity of its game servers.
"We are at a 900% concurrent increase since we launched f2p. We are working on getting subscribers to the front of the line," Smedley tweeted. "Very bluntly this has been a wee bit more successful than we planned on. Sorry."  However, the day after this tweet it was revealed (by Smedley) that DCUO was running at over 1000 percent of its pre-free-to-play concurrent user numbers. Better get cracking SOE.

Epic Games’ sequel to the best-looking games on mobile devices has an official release date, and it may be sooner than you think.
Infinity Blade was a revelation for the mobile games industry. Using the Unreal Engine, Epic Games was able to create a lush, engaging experience for iPhone and iPad users across the globe. It was a nice change from the simple, gimmicky games that plague the iTunes Store, and went on to be quite a success.
Now, Infinity Blade II lurks just over the horizon, and promises to be even better than the original.
Epic has just announced that Infinity Blade II will hit digital shelves on December 1, 2011. If you have an iPad, iPad 2, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 3GS or iPod Touch, you’ll be able to download and play the game – though only 4S and iPad 2 users will be able to play it at its full capacity.
The game promises to be more of the same in terms of play style, just much, much prettier. Epic has put tons of work into displaying the potential of mobile devices, so expect Infinity Blade II to create a new graphics benchmark on release. If you liked the original game, which you can still buy for $5.99, you’ll probably enjoy the sequel.
Do you think mobile gaming will ever hit a point at which it is on par with consoles and PCs?

It took them the PSP Go to finally make a hardline stance on the matter, but now Sony has seen the light and is insisting that now is not the time for a download-only console.
Said Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Worldwide Studios boss, "We believe, for some consumers, the time is [right], but for other consumers, the time is still not [right]. So we believe the time is still not right to go download-only as a platform."
What could be the deciding factor as to why they are siding with those consumers who not ready for a download-only approach in gaming? It's simple: broadband internet. "Some PS Vita titles, like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, will be close to 4GB in size, which could be too large to download for consumers who do not have a fast broadband connection." But apart from this, "Some consumers like shopping in retail stores, talking to knowledgeable store clerks, buying and playing games on the spot. We do not want to remove that capability from consumers."
SCEE's Jim Ryan concurs, saying that, "There are consumers in parts of the world - this is a global device - where the digital model has not yet fully been embraced." And it's true, really. In fact, in a study recently concluded, not even the US or UK are in the forerunners of downloading speed. And mind you, everyone gets just a tad bit -- okay, that's not true, a whole LOT -- more impatient when it comes to downloading their stuff on the Internet. What more if it's a game that you've been waiting for eons to come?
Nobody would want to sit around several hours just waiting for the download to finish, on top of the full year (at a minimum) that you've already spent just waiting in anticipation for the game to hit retail.
I would have to agree with Sony on this one. The global infrastructure for a hi-speed connection just isn't all that well set yet. Of course, as a business, they'll have to take into top consideration as well what their other consumers' capacity for enjoying their products are going to be.
The failure of the PSP Go most definitely made this impact on them. Releasing the system without the UMD was a misstep on their part, which they immediately realized when it went dead cold on store shelves just months after its launch. And then they atoned for it by coming up with the PlayStation Vita.
Not to say that a download-only console will be nay possible in the future, but as for now, am fine with my physical media as it is. There's someting fairly comforting having it in the palm of my hands.

Batman: Arkham City is all ready to roll out, but before that, ESRB must put in a couple of words.
According to the ratings board, Arkham City deserves a T (for Teen) rating because it contains references to alcohol, blood, mild language, suggestive themes, use of tobacco, and of course, violence.
"This is an action-adventure game featuring characters from the Batman franchise. Players assume the role of Batman as he investigates Arkham City, a neighborhood overrun by psychopathic criminals and former prison inmates. As players explore the city and infiltrate hideouts, they punch and kick criminals in melee-style combat, using various gadgets (e.g., explosive gel, smoke pellets, a grappling gun) to defend themselves against gun-wielding thugs and villains. The frenetic combat is highlighted by cries of pain, punching sounds, realistic gunfire, and slow-motion effects.
In some sequences, players must solve puzzles or use stealth to incapacitate enemies and free hostages; when players fail a challenge, the hostage will lose his life. Some environments contain bloodstains on the floor or furniture; other cutscenes depict spots of blood on injured characters. During the course of the game, some female characters are dressed in form-fitting outfits that expose large amounts of cleavage; one background sign depicts the silhouette of a woman and the words “Live Nude.” The dialogue also contains some suggestive references (e.g., “The anger, the frustration, the hints of repressed sexual tension” and “Sure could go for some porn right now.”).
One sequence depicts a character smoking a cigar, and there are various references to alcohol (e.g., “She got a little drunk and killed her classmates,” “I'd give anything for a nice cold beer right now.”). The words “b*tch,” “a*s,” and “bastard” can be heard in dialogue."
Batman: Arkham City comes out for the PC, Xbox 360 and PC on October 18th for North America, and October 21 for Europe. Warner Bros. just revealed the Collector's Edition a couple of weeks back, along with the promise that htey will be delivering the "most detailed open world game".

Word's been getting pretty persistent about The Witcher 2 getting a console treatment.
Today, we have senior producer Tomasz Gop talking about this very issue. "We've already done a PC game that doesn't suck," he told Nowgamer. "In that way we kinda know where we're at. That's why we started off with what we feel good at."
"If we'll make a console version in the future, I'm pretty sure it won't be dumbed down. Not in the case of The Witcher 2 - there's no need and no way for us to simplify the game for consoles."
CD Projekt has previously mentioned that they did work on a console version for The Witcher 2, but only as a proof of concept.
"After we release The Witcher 2 on PC we just sit down with Excel or Project and make schedules, make plans. Then we will be totally glad to announce what is coming out; we know what team we have, what capacity we have, but we still have to plan out the amount of work. Then we will tell the world what we plan to do and 'it will be that day of release', potentially."
Of course, as all eyes are on CD Projekt's The Witcher 2, it's probably not too farfretched that they'll have something in store for us come E3. Maybe. We'll be keeping you posted.

Although Sony wasn't there to give their testimony to the Congress Subcommittee on Commerce, Cyber-security expert Dr. Gene Spafford was, and what he had to say to could only paint Sony further in a bad light.

gta5Rumors about Nintendo's new home console, codenamed Project Cafe, have been relentless as of late. The rumors that seem to come from multiple different sources have the console sporting a controler with a six inch screen, power substantially more than that of the PlayStation 3, and... Grand Theft Auto 5 as a launch title. How likely is it that Rockstar's GTA5 will make its debut on Project Cafe?
