The lovable indie game shows up on one of gaming’s biggest platforms, with a few upgrades to boot.
Cave Story is a simple but innovated platformer created by independent game developer Daisuke Amaya. The game was initially released for free, but its massive success gave it the opportunity to pop up in a few different mediums. Versions popped up all over the gaming world, but the two most high profile ports are likely the 3DS version and the one that has just dropped to Steam.
This latest iteration of Cave Story, now downloadable on Steam for around $10 depending on your region, has a completely remastered soundtrack and a slightly overhauled graphics engine. Nothing so serious that you won’t recognize the game, but just enough to make it worth shelling out a few bucks in lieu of downloading the free version.
Cave Story has seen high praise for its sheer size, causing many reviewers to compare it to classic platformers such as Castlevania and Metroid. The game features fast-paced shooting in tight spaces, with tons and tons of enemies attacking from all sides. The whole thing looks pretty chaotic, and reminds me of some of the more intense side-scrolling shooters of the old days.
Here’s a link to the game’s entry on Steam, if you’re interested in giving it a try: Cave Story
Do you like seeing indie developers spread their products out and make some money, or should free games stay free?

Microsoft’s slick new Xbox dashboard has an official release date, and it’s very, very soon.
The original Xbox 360 dashboard left a lot to be desired, but it had a certain charm. Over the years, Microsoft has tuned and re-tuned the dashboard to make it easier to use and, more importantly, easier to sell you things like movies, apps and downloadable content.
The latest version of the dashboard, now titled “Metro,” is scheduled for launch December 6th and brings with it a whole slew of new features and options.
The dashboard boasts full Kinect support, Bing voice search, Beacon-marking, sharing of achievements to Facebook and plenty of other new features. Additionally, expect to see the early versions of Xbox TV or whatever they’re calling it, with a variety of service providers bringing their programming directly to the dashboard (for a small fee, of course). Microsoft updates the providers based on contractual obligations and regions, so look around for specific info regarding what you’ll actually be able to access.
One major point in the update notes: the addition of cloud saving for all Xbox Live Gold members. The benefit here is that you can back up your game saves to the Microsoft cloud, allowing you to share them across consoles – a much-needed feature, especially as our poor little HDDs get filled up.
What do you think about the new features coming to the dashboard? Is there anyone out there that’s been playing with the beta and has a few comments regarding its functionality?

Earlier in the week, we found out that Bioware’s latest sci-fi RPG would be getting a pre-release demo. Now we have some more info for players that can’t wait to catch up with Commander Shepard and his/her crew.
Mass Effect 3 is easily one of the most anticipated titles of 2012. The first two games were both enormous successes for Bioware and EA, and even if you weren’t stoked on the changes made in Mass Effect 2, it’s still hard to spot a better sci-fi RPG. If you just can’t wait until March to get your hands on Mass Effect 3, you can jump into the pre-release demo starting in January.
The Mass Effect demo will include both single and multiplayer game features, but here’s the catch – in order to qualify for the early access demo, you’ll need to register an online pass from Battlefield 3. This won’t be a problem for the million or so people that have already pre-ordered BF3 and are stoked on playing, but some of those Call of Duty MW3 fans may be upset at the news. It does look like there will be an alternative method for getting in, but it’s not clear quite yet.
Here’s the full post, straight from the Bioware forums:
What are the details of the Mass Effect 3 pre-release demo?
•The Mass Effect 3 pre-release demo will launch in January 2012 (exact date TBA).
•The demo will include both single-player and multi-player sections.
•The demo will be released in all regions where the game is
How can I get early access to the multi-player portion of the Mass Effect 3 demo coming in January 2012?
•Owners of Battlefield 3, on any platform, who activate their Online Pass will automatically be granted early access to the multiplayer portion of the Mass Effect 3 demo. There is no need to enter any other codes, the early access will be applied to the EA Account associated with the Online Pass. Note: BF3 Origin Customers automatically have the BF3 Online Pass.
•This applies to all regions where the demo is released (to be announced)
•The exact date of the demo launch will be announced in late November
•There will be another program whereby players and fans of the Mass Effect franchise can unlock this early access (with no purchase necessary) – this will also be announced in late November or early December.
•There will also be a tool posted on www.masseffect.com allowing players to check if their EA account has been granted the early access.
•The length of the early access period is TBA.
•The single-player section of the demo will be available to all players on day one of the demo launch.
2012 is shaping up to be a massive year for gaming. Mass Effect 3, StarCraft 2: Heart of the Swarm, BioShock Infinite, Soul Calibur 5 and Final Fantasy XIII-2 are all headed our way in a relatively short period of time, so you’d better finish up your 2011 games fast (Skyrim!).
Are you excited about Mass Effect 3? Will you play the demo, or wait for the full release?

EA’s combative stance against digital distribution networks other than Origin claims its second victim, with Green Man Games removing all EA titles from their service.
You may remember a news item from a few months ago indicating that Steam had pulled all of EA’s games due to contract disagreements regarding downloadable content. Also cited was EA’s apparent desire to make enemies out of every other game developer and aggressively push their barely-functioning Origin system down the throats of gamers.
While Origin has admittedly improved, many EA games are still missing from the Steam marketplace and it doesn’t look like the publisher is planning changing its ways any time soon.  EA’s strange posturing over its titles has now resulted in the loss of another digital distributor - as of today, Green Man Games has officially removed all EA titles from its roster for what appear to be similar reasons.
Here’s a quote from GMG’s community manager:
"Bad news folks, we very unfortunately have to pull down EA products from sale in all regions except for the UK. We're currently in talks with EA to see if this can be changed, however I can't give any kind of guarantees aside from saying as soon as I know something I will let you know too."
EA games are still available through Green Man Games if you live in the UK, but everyone else is out of luck. Call it one more step in EA’s plan to push all of its gamers to Origin, which I imagine ups their profit margins considerably. I’m not much of a PC gamer and the games I do run through Steam are mostly Valve titles, but it certainly seems like a strange decision to cut off a huge part of the market in the hopes they’ll migrate to an unproven service.
Is EA making the right call by forcing gamers to use Origin for new titles, or is leaving other distributors out of the loop a mistake?

Europe will be getting BlazBlue: Continuum Shift II on November 4th, but even before that, some more big news is coming out for the PAL region soon.
So far, what we do know is that they will be getting all downloadable characters, same as the ones that the 3DS and PSP platforms for North America and Japan got. What's a sure bonus, however, is that there will be an upcoming surprise by way of a "bonus news" for the European release.
This was hinted at by the game's official European site, which dons a countdown clock. Since Europe is the last to get the game, then it could be an upcoming limited edition bundle, don't you think?

In New Zealand, 16 year-olds must be jumping with joy upon hearing the news that they can make their way to the nearest retailer when Modern Warfare 3 hits the market and pick up a copy of the game for themselves.
The OFLC has given Activision's much-awaited sequel an R16 rating for the region, which is the highest second rating in the country. It comes as no surprise really, however, as all previous Call of Duty games have consistently been given the same rating throughout the years.
The OFLC justifies the R16 rating with the observation that it contains, obviously, violence.  That, as well, is expected, of course, considering the context in which the game takes place.
Anyway, EB Games Australia, is teasing us with some massive Modern Warfare 3 news to come tomorrow, so that's one other thing to look forward to before the game officially comes out.
Modern Warfare 3 is set for a worldwide release on November 8th, 2011, across the platforms of PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Wii and DS.

Sony's covering its bases, and its trying to cover it well. Just this past weekend, the company apparently updated its customer Terms of Service to include the clause that which keeps them immune from class action lawsuits.
Said amendment to the TOS is called the "Binding Individual Arbritration" clause. Basically it states that "any Dispute resoultion Proceedings, whether in arbitration or court, will be conducted only on an individual basis and not in a class or representative action or as a named or unnamed member in a class, consolidated, representative or private attorney general action."
And since it is for Sony's product, users cannot log in to their PSN accounts unless they agree to this new stipulation. If in case you would beg to disagree, you'll have to send a formal letter to their Los Angeles office, and from there, you should be able to retain your right to file a class action lawsuit against them.
Now, in light of this development, it has now come to our understanding that Australian PSN users are not covered by this new clause.
Clarified a Sony Australia representative, "Although the Terms of Service (TOS) in the SCEE region have not changed, in the regions where they have, this updated language is designed to benefit both the consumer and the company by ensuring that there is adequate time and procedures to resolve disputes. There is also a section of the TOS that educates users on how they can opt out of this portion of the TOS. As Australia is part of SCEE therefore there is no change to the TOS."
Sony was caught in a deluge of class action lawsuits in the past, particularly when the PSN hack occurred.
Do you think it's fair of Sony to suddenly include this stipulation in the Terms of Service?

We've seen it coming, but nonetheless, it still doesn't make it any less astounding when the news is made official.

We've seen it coming, but nonetheless, it still doesn't make it any less astounding when the news is made official. We knew the PlayStation Vita won't be coming with a memory card, and we're already expecting that it will be costing some arm and leg from us.

So, what's the official verdict? The PlayStation Vita memory cards definitely are not coming for cheap. Based on the press release that Sony Japan sent out for the PS Vita's Japanese launch, there will be four different sizes for the cards when they come out:
4GB - JPY 2,200 (US$ 29)
8GB - JPY 3,200 (US$ 42)
16GB - JPY, 5,500 (US$ 72)
32GB - JPY 9,500 (US$ 124)
Now, these cards are all under the Sony brand, of course, but you do have the option to use instead third-party cards. They should be much cheaper than the Sony ones, so at least you have that alternative. The only setback is that these third-party manufactured cards might not work as efficiently as a Sony card would. Yeah, they've tied us down to them efficiently that way.
They've got a lot more accessories to bleed your wallet out dry with, so in case you want to check those out as well, just follow the source link below for the full press release.
In the meantime, Yoshinori Ono is advising Western fans to keep their behinds glued to their seats, and just keep their cool waiting for the Vita to arrive in the region.

Sony may be yet to set an official release date for the PlayStation Vita to the North, but if there's one thing they'd be willing to tell you, it's that it should be worth the wait when does it land in the region.

Sony Worldwide Studios president, Shuhei Yoshida, advised folks via Twitter not to import the handheld from Japan. Not that there should be anything wrong with it, but the Japanese model does have some button differences as that with the Western ones. Having a different button layout from the one you're used to will surely affect how you enjoy using the handheld to its fullest.
Said Yoshida in his tweet: "There are people who are interested in importing the Japanese version of PS Vita from Japan, but I personally do not recommend that."
He furthered, "Sorry to make you wait a bit longer. We will update the launch dates outside Japan soon." While he wasn't more forthcoming as to when Vita could come out to the West, he did explain his recommendation against importation.
"Sorry I'm not explaining well," he said, "but from my experience owning both US and Japan game consoles of everything, there tend to be minor nuances. Like inconsistency between the use of X and O buttons between system software and games. It's a legacy, but in Japan circle means 'yes', cross means 'no'."
That should explain why the buttons have a different meaning for their region. It's a nifty trivia as well, don't you think? That should keep all those complaints at bay, now that we understand better about the cultural implications of how the Japanese work out their hardware.
At the TGS 2011, Sony yielded more PS Vita details, such as on its multitasking capabilities, Flash, web browsing and memory cards. Just last week, too, they showed off the Vita's PS3 Remote Play function.

Fans of the HD version of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd will surely be glad to know that Capcom wants to put its localization on top of to-do list over everything else.
Of course, what makes it a double cause for joy is that implicit in that statement is that they will, although much later, also be dealing with the localization of the other titles in the series. This was the revelation made by Christian Svensson over at their official forums, Capcom-Unity.
"Soon is a relative term," he said when asked whether or not there will be any new MH titles coming to the North American region, "but I would say that Western MH fans have lots to be excited about for the future. Admittedly I do hope we can find a way to get P3 HD Westward somehow sooner than those other things but as I've mentioned, it's an open item."
The HD for MHP 3rd came out in Japan just a couple of weeks back in August to massive success, sitting on top of the Japanese charts.

Gear up for OnLive, UK. A date's been set for its official launch in the region.
The cloud-gaming service is set to arrive on September 22nd, to coincide with the opening of the Eurogamer Expo, happening in London.
Said Steve Perlman, Founder and CEO for OnLive, "OnLive will utterly transform gaming in the UK. No discs, big downloads or specialized hardware needed. OnLive gives you the latest games instantly, anytime, anywhere on HDTV, PC, Mac, as we as iPad, Android tablets."
If you're attending the Expo, then you can get your hands on OnLive itself so you can check it out. If you're lucky enough, you can even take one home for free.
The UK service will also be fully integarted with that in North America. The California-based company has also expressed confidence that their technology can actually work on both Sony and Microsoft's consoles. Oh, and that it can definitely do everything that the Wii U does.

We may not know what Capcom's plans are for Nintendo's Wii U, but we can definitely say they've got something up their sleeves.
Capcom Europe boss David Reese divulged that they are, in fact, working on some prototypes, and that if we're lucky, we just might be able to spot a couple of them at the upcoming TGS event later in September.
"Capcom haven't announced anything officially on Wii U. I thiknk they have done prototypes. There are only so many things you can get ready for E3. But they might show something at the Tokyo Games Show which is where Wii U is more focused on. I haven't seen anything personally myself but since the companies are quite close, I am sure they must be looking at something.
Some of the big names like Ubisoft and EA said that they will support it. I think Riccitiello was on stage at E3 and said, 'I am going to support it,' and when they say that, they will."
He also had a piece of advice for Nintendo's naysayers. "Never undestimate Nintendo [though]. You suddenly think 'how have they managed to sell so many?'. Wii Sports and something like that... people play for ten minutes. They become tired and they stop playing. I think Nintendo will bounce back. I think they will come out with some original First Party titles. Nintendo has amazing First Party and that's what drives it."
So far, Eiji Aonuma is foreseeing a possible Wii U launch for a brand new Legend of Zelda game. The rest of the company has also said that they have most certainly learned their lessons from the original Wii - such as the problems on software, and hopefully, these lessons will help them avoid having it again on the Wii U.

Codemasters did say it was going to be rescheduled for a "Spring 2011" release.
Bodycount, the upcoming shooter beset by production problems, may very well be on its way out, finally. Publisher Codemasters has now announced that the game will be hitting retail stores in North America by August 30th, while EMEA regions will be picking it up come September 2nd.
It's been a while since we've heard anything of Bodycount, and really, who could blame the fans who thought it was vaporware already? Stuart Black was originally the creative director for Bodycount, but left the company late last year, throwing the game's develompent off-course. That changes today, though, because Codemasters also sent out this new gameplay trailer for Bodycount, to accompany the good news of the said release dates. Enjoy!

Fans awaiting White Knight Chronicles 2 in North America will have to wait a bit longer as publisher D3 confirmed the game's delay in the region.
Originally, the game was set for an August 2nd release, but now it's been revealed to being pushed back by a good month. The announcement was made on the game's official Facebook page, stating thus: "We are targeting September 2011 for the release of the game."
No reason was offered as to why the delay was decided upon, but Europe certainly did not get any problems getting the game as it successfully launched there just earlier this month. Japan, meanwhile, had been enjoying the WKC sequel since July of last year.
D3 Publisher, back in April, proudly announced that the first title, White Knight Chronicles, had hit the 1 million mark in shipments made. Those who missed out on the first title will also be glad to know that you can play WKC2 even without the first title.
