Because without new Angry Birds levels, the games industry would surely collapse.
If you ask any serious game about the one thing they wish they had, chances are good they’d say, “More Angry Birds stuff.” Angry Birds is, in many ways, the best game ever made, and it’s ridiculous that anyone would play any other game. The immense depth, completely original concept and truly marketable characters set it above and beyond pretty much any other title.
If you, like the rest of the world, simply can’t wait to get your hands on new Angry Birds content, today’s your day. Or, well, March 7 is your day. Rovio, the luminaries behind Angry Birds have confirmed that the next groundbreaking update for Angry Birds Seasons hits digital stores on that date.
The new update, titled Cherry Blossoms, borrows a few themes from Asian culture. Beyond that, there aren’t many details available. But this is Rovio we’re talking about, so the new content is sure to be incredible.
I’m rapt with anticipation for yet another mind-blowing entry in what I would hands-down describe as the most compelling experience any gaming platform has to offer.
Thank you, Rovio.

Next up: Angry Birds in the Hood.
Angry Birds has become more than a game; it’s a cultural touchstone. So many people have played the game or been exposed to it through jokes, videos, friends and merchandise that it has transcended the world of gaming. And what’s the best thing to do with cultural touchstones? Milk them dry, of course!
Rovio has confirmed that it’s working on yet another version of Angry Birds, this one titled Angry Birds Space. As you can probably imagine, the game features the same Angry Birds gameplay you either love or hate, but this time set in space.
It’s worth noting that the game is being built from the ground up, with new physics and special features. NASA and National Geographic are listed as launch partners, whatever that may mean.
You can check out the trailer here:

Recent numbers indicate that games for the two mobile platforms have outsold PSP and DS software. Like, by a lot.
Nintendo, I think, is considered the champion of handheld gaming. The Sony PSP has certainly made headway, and the shaky launch of the 3DS combined with Vita’s hype threatens Nintendo’s position in the market, but for the most part, they’ve ruled the handheld roost since launching the Game Boy way back in 1989. Pretty much everyone has a DS, right?
But a new challenger has appeared in recent years, one that has managed to put games in the hands of non-gamers and absolutely demolish both the PSP and Nintendo handhelds in terms of raw software sales: the mobile market.
According to numbers from Flurry, mobile games sales represented an astounding 58% of games sales in the last year, compared to 36% for the Nintendo DS and only 6% for the PSP. That means that mobile games have sold more software than the DS and PSP combined. Sony and Nintendo have earned around $1.4 billion in portable games sales this year, combined to $1.9 billion for Android market and iOS. The industry is certainly changing.
Mobile gaming is going to continue to dominate in terms of raw sales, but I think  the writer over at TechCrunch has this point severely wrong: “I think Sony and Nintendo have to come to grips with the fact that iOS and Android are capable of much richer play experiences than PSP or 3DSs are.”
He then goes on to list Angry Birds and Disney’s Mobile AppMates as evidence of these “rich” play experiences. That’s a pretty big jump when you start looking at some of the incredible games we’ve seen on handheld consoles, and when you consider that some of the best games on mobile systems are dumbed-down DS or PSP games.
But he’s right about one thing – by not developing games for the mobile market, Nintendo and Sony are missing a big profit opportunity.
What do you think of these new numbers? Do you think mobile platforms provide “richer” games than the DS or PSP?

The simple but addictive puzzler gives the games industry a new definition for “casual” and makes a zillion dollars in the process.
Angry Birds is more than a game, it’s a worldwide phenomenon. Developed by Finnish games-maker Rovio, the game is based on one simple mechanic – fire birds at structures and knock them over. After its release, Angry Birds became a massive success, topping download charts and bringing a new level of attention to mobile gaming.
As of today, it looks like Rovio can add one more accomplishment to the pile – Angry Birds has officially hit 500 million downloads worldwide.
It’s worth noting that the download total refers to the whole Angry Birds franchise and not just the original game, so Rio and Seasons are both included in the tally. Based on information from GamePro, Angry Birds players have logged over 200,000 years of playtime, a figure that simply blows the mind.
Here’s what Mike Hed, CEO of Rovio had to say:
“This is a fantastic landmark achievement for us, and we're extremely delighted to see such an incredible amount of people enjoying our games. We remain committed to creating more fun experiences and bringing exceptional quality to Angry Birds fans everywhere.”
I actually wrote a guide to Angry Birds a couple of weeks ago and it was my first contact with the game. I have to admit that it’s fun and easy to pick up, but I’m not sure I could see myself devoting specific time to finishing it with so many other games around. It definitely appeals to some gamers though, as many of my friends are addicted to it.
What do you think of Angry Birds? Are you one of the 500 million?

Find out what games real gamers selected as the best of the year, from a contest that earned over two million votes.
GamesMaster’s Golden Joystick Awards are different from other award given out in the games industry, because the people who select the winners are the people that play the games. The Golden Joysticks compile their list of winners based exclusively on votes from players, which means there are not usually any big surprises when the winners list comes out.
One could note that since the votes really only represent the popular gaming mind, excellent but less-known games don’t have much of a chance of winning. Either way, the awards do help us get a pretty good idea of what gamers liked in the last few months, and what they’re still playing. You’ll notice a big wins for Mojang (Minecraft), Ubisoft (Assassin’s Creed) and Rovio (Angry Birds), but the year clearly belongs to Activision/Blizzard (StarCraft, World of Warcraft, Black Ops and Guitar Hero). It probably doesn’t hurt that most of the titles on the list seem to be available for more than one system.
Here’s the list, compiled by GamePro:
Action/Adventure Game of the Year: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Mobile Game of the Year: Angry Birds Rio
Roleplaying Game of the Year: Fallout: New Vegas
Massively Multiplayer Online Game of the Year: World of Warcraft
Fighting Game of the Year: Mortal Kombat
Racing Game of the Year: Gran Turismo 5
Sports Game of the Year: FIFA 11
Strategy Game of the Year: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
Music Game of the Year: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock
Free to Play Game of the Year: League of Legends
Downloadable Game of the Year: Minecraft
Shooter Game of the Year: Call of Duty: Black Ops
One to Watch Award: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Innovation of the Year: Nintendo 3DS
Outstanding Contribution: Sonic the Hedgehog
Ultimate Game of the Year: Portal 2
I’m pretty surprised to see the 3DS on the list, since it gets a lot of flak from players and the press, but I guess there weren’t’ many other innovations to speak of.
Remember that winners are taken exclusively from games that game out within the last 12 months, so don’t throw a hissy fit if your favorite game isn’t there unless you’re sure it’s eligible.
That being said, do you see anything in this list worth throwing a hissy fit over?

The developer of the runaway mobile gaming hit has chosen Shanghai as the location for its first international expansion, and the decision was no accident.
If you follow the statistics in the iTunes store or the general mobile games marketplace, it’s pretty obvious that one game is still dominating the rest – Angry Birds. The simple, quick and fun gameplay (so familiar to those of us that played games before we owned phones) caught on something fierce, and has turned Rovio into one of the most powerful forces in mobile gaming.
Now Rovio is looking to expand its opportunities in one of the most rapidly growing sectors in the world – China. The Angry Birds game is already a success in China, with 40 million downloads and counting, but Rovio hopes to capitalize on other opportunities offered by the nation.
Peter Vesterbacka, Chief Marketing Officer for Rovio, had this to say on the potential of the Chinese market:
"Rovio chose Shanghai as the first location for an international office because of its uniqueposition as one of the most creative and technologically advanced cities in the world, and also because Rovio wants to show its appreciation to Chinese fans by serving them even better locally.”
One market Rovio is especially hoping to penetrate is that of the “feature” phone, which is industry speak for any phone that doesn’t run off an advanced OS like Android or Apple’s iOS. According to China Daily, which broke the story, there are over a billion mobile phone users in China and almost all of those users still possess a basic feature phone.
This is a largely untapped market, and jumping in early will give Rovio the ability to line itself up as one of China’s premiere game developers. They’re already talking about acquiring smaller studios, so perhaps we’re witnessing the birth of a titan.
Are you a fan of Angry Birds? I’ve known the joy of smashing a few buildings since obtaining my iPad.

Here's more news bit from the GDC 2011 conference. Things are starting to pick up and we've got more new developers on hand to join in the event. Here's more news bit from the GDC 2011 conference. Things are starting to pick up and we've got more new developers on hand to join in the event. Breakthrough devs, Rovio, was there to speak at the Smartphone Summit earlier, and of course, talks veered naturally to their highly successful Angry Birds.
Peter Vesterbacka of Rovio spoke at the panel and discussed what else they have planned for their game, describing it as being "more than a game." Said Vesterbacka, "To us, Angry Birds is more than a game. It is a next generation entertainment franchise."
The interesting thing was that they did not consider it as a turning point when Angry Birds reached the number one spot in Finland. Instead, they realized they had a hit in their hands when it actually stayed there. "We started thinking that this might be something with legs," he said. And what do you know, it did have legs, as well as some pretty sturdy wings.
The rest, as they say, is history. The angry, suicidal avians went on to spread their wings and conquer the rest of the world, making the UK App Store their next stop, before finally landing in the US. "The rest is history, and now we are number one in about seventy different countries," he said proudly.
They did not, however, forget to thank the various entities that made this number one success a possibility for them. Apple in particular played a huge role in delivering the results for them. Everything just fell into synchronized perfection, allowing for that "perfect storm" to bring them over to the glorious top spot.
They're not about to rest on their laurels, though. Rovio has got plenty more aces up their sleeves, knowing that the key to maintaining what they have now is by giving updates -- and keeping them free. "We don't treat Angry Birds as disposable. We update content for free every four weeks." By disposable, they mean those game releases that are priced, say at US$ 0.99, and then left alone to fend for itself in the store, with nary an update to keep the customers coming back for more.
Apart from keeping its presence in mobile platform stores, Rovio also went beyond the gaming walls to push for their marketing. They came up with plush toy versions of the popular birds, and now have sold over two million pieces of them. With this kind of encouraging feedback, it should be no surprise that they're getting ready to conquer Hollywood, too.
Reportedly, Rovio is now in talks with Hollywood film publisher 20th Century Fox for a tie-in game with Rio. It features birds too, albeit talking ones, not necessarily angry. "This is a separate game that fits very nicely with Angry Birds. Also, it is called Angry Birds: Rio, not Rio: Angry Birds. It is still our game." You can bet therefore that it's not going to be another "crappy movie game."
At the end of the day, what is very clear about the Angry Birds experience is that gaming has in fact moved to mobile. Said Vesterbacka, "The center of gravity has clearly moved to mobile. Just like us, in the future we will see more brands emerge in mobile and go to other platforms, not the other way around. There is so much opportunity to do new things. What you've seen so far is only a small glimpse into the Angry Birds universe."
And we definitely do agree. The company has been so far very effective at marketing their brand, it's gone more than just viral. From homemade Angry Birds playable cakes to Angry Birds-inspired rap songs, it's all taking the gaming world by storm. For a casual game, that's not bad, we say. Not bad at all.
We're sure you'd like to hear that Angry Birds-inspired rap song, so we've got it here for you. It's written and rapped by Brandon Shapiro, going by the handle Brandon Shapiro.
He's got the essence of the Angry Birds spot-on with the lyrics, too. Here's a few choice words from the song, giving the backstory of why the birds are so angry, and the special powers that each of them hold:
And we're launchin'
And were crashin'
Let's hit the pigs 'til they all go pop
We're the best birds
But we're angry
If you take our eggs
We're never gonna stop
Every theme and level we will get three stars and set you straight
Maybe find a golden egg and win until the next update
Screw the pigs, screw the pigs, they're wearin' helmets, hardhats, usin' tricks
Fake mustaches and green skin, it don't matter cus I know I'm gonna win
Birds on my side, they're pretty fly, launch 'em in the air, the pigs cant hide
It's totally fair, you took our eggs like a spy, and besides I got my finger as a guide
Touch the screen, the birds are angry, mean, they don't stop on Christmas, or Halloween
They're always gonna switch to a different theme, they're definitely makin' up the greatest team
Got that that slingshot and pull it back, aim for the right spot then attack
You took our eggs, that was wack, and if you do it again, were comin' back
But sometimes you pigs just wont go, always come again like 4 in a row
We gotta get 'em to stop cus they will overflow, say goodbye, no hello
Stop your laughin and stop the snatchin', we don't have eggs so we don't have hatchin'
Get ready for the birds who are so diverse, let's talk about them in the next verse
