Because without new Angry Birds levels, the games industry would surely collapse.
If you ask any serious game about the one thing they wish they had, chances are good they’d say, “More Angry Birds stuff.” Angry Birds is, in many ways, the best game ever made, and it’s ridiculous that anyone would play any other game. The immense depth, completely original concept and truly marketable characters set it above and beyond pretty much any other title.
If you, like the rest of the world, simply can’t wait to get your hands on new Angry Birds content, today’s your day. Or, well, March 7 is your day. Rovio, the luminaries behind Angry Birds have confirmed that the next groundbreaking update for Angry Birds Seasons hits digital stores on that date.
The new update, titled Cherry Blossoms, borrows a few themes from Asian culture. Beyond that, there aren’t many details available. But this is Rovio we’re talking about, so the new content is sure to be incredible.
I’m rapt with anticipation for yet another mind-blowing entry in what I would hands-down describe as the most compelling experience any gaming platform has to offer.
Thank you, Rovio.

Next up: Angry Birds in the Hood.
Angry Birds has become more than a game; it’s a cultural touchstone. So many people have played the game or been exposed to it through jokes, videos, friends and merchandise that it has transcended the world of gaming. And what’s the best thing to do with cultural touchstones? Milk them dry, of course!
Rovio has confirmed that it’s working on yet another version of Angry Birds, this one titled Angry Birds Space. As you can probably imagine, the game features the same Angry Birds gameplay you either love or hate, but this time set in space.
It’s worth noting that the game is being built from the ground up, with new physics and special features. NASA and National Geographic are listed as launch partners, whatever that may mean.
You can check out the trailer here:

5th Cell celebrates one million downloads with new, free content for the iOS hit.
Scribblenauts Remix has officially hit over one million downloads on the iOS platform, and 5th Cell is feeling quite jovial, as you may imagine. To celebrate the game’s accomplishments, along with the upcoming Valentine’s Day holiday, 5th Cell has dropped a brand new Scribblenauts content update, live now.
The new content features a Valentine’s Day-themed playground area, as well as a variety of new items to explore. For example, the press release issued by the company gives the following suggestions: “loving, polka-dotted charonosaurus" and "giant, pink, flying chocolate box." This is the second such update to Scribblenauts Remix, with the previous release adding 20 new levels.
Scribblenauts Remix has been a massive success on the iOS platform, even toppling Angry Birds for a brief period of time. It looks like the game will continue to perform well into the new year.

5th Cell is prepping a brand new platformer, set for release this Thursday.
5th Cell recently brought its Nintendo DS hit, Scribblenauts, to Apple’s iOS software. The game was a smashing success, and even managed to topple Angry Birds from the top software slot for a couple of weeks. With performance like that, it’s no wonder that the development company is targeting their newest game, Run Roo Run, directly at the iOS market.
As you can see, Run Roo Run operates in much the same way as Robot Unicorn attack - your character automatically runs across the screen, and you have to collect goodies and avoid hazards as you go. The one major difference is that in lieu of scrolling across an infinite screen, your auto-running will be limited to one screen length. 5th Cell dubs this setup “microplatforming.”
You can expect to find a whopping 420 levels on launch day, with increasingly complex and difficult problems. Plus, you’ll unlock “extreme” versions of every level as you go, giving you a total of 840 levels to play. 5th Cell has promised 10 new levels every week, free of charge.
Not too shabby for mobile gamers, eh? Watch for Run Roo Run on the iTunes Store tomorrow, January 12.

One of the most popular mobile games in the world had a huge surge in sales thanks to new device activation.
Well, it looks like two things happened for sure on Christmas day. Number one, a whole hell of a lot of people got iOS and Android devices. Number two, a huge percentage of those new users elected to download Rovio’s smash hit, Angry Birds.
The indie studio reported that the game was downloaded over 6.5 million times on Christmas day – an absolutely absurd figure no matter how you look at it. Judging by smartphone/tablet activations, it looks like almost every person who got a new device downloaded Angry Birds. The game might as well be pre-installed.
It’s worth noting that the figured include free and paid versions of the app, but still – what a massive day for Rovio. Take that, Scribblenauts!

PopCap re-launches one of the most popular puzzle games ever made, complete with a free version.
PopCap has officially removed the older version of Bejeweled 2 + Blitz, replacing it with a revamped version that features elements from Bejeweled 3. They’ve also gone and dropped a free version of the game, which consists solely of the one-minute “Score Attack” mode originally found in Bejeweled Blitz.
The new game, which goes by the same title as the retired version, contains the Zen and Diamond Mine modes found in Bejeweled 3, plus Classic play. And since PopCap is known for keeping their products updated, it’s only fair to assume that new features will be added over time.
Bejeweled 2 + Blitz is currently available on the iTunes Store for 99 cents – if you’re into puzzle games and time-wasters, it’s definitely worth a look. People love to talk about Angry Birds as the start of the mobile gaming revolution, but Bejeweled is actually second on the list of best-selling mobile games of all time, lead only by Tetris.

If you love playing the same game in different settings, head to the Android Market/iTunes Store and buy Angry Birds, again.
Angry Birds has long had a lock on the mobile gaming market, though it was recently dethroned by Scribblenauts. Still, no game has sold quite as well as the bird-flinging puzzler, possibly due to its simple but incredibly addictive gameplay. Sure, we’ve seen games like Angry Birds before, but Rovio seems to have distilled the experience into a fine solution that’s easy to drink and tasty to boot.
The game is ubiquitous, penetrating all layers of pop culture to the point where even your non-gaming parents have probably heard of it.
Christmas is almost here, which means it’s time for our obligatory Angry Birds update. Angry Birds Seasons: Wreck the Halls is now available for download on the Android Market and iTunes Store, boasting 25 new levels, with each one being made available day-by-day until the 25th. The final level promises a showdown with Big Pig, which I can only assume is the primary bad guy in the franchise (I never finished the original).
If Angry Birds is your game of choice, you may as well download Seasons. If you’ve never played the game and want to give it a shot, it’s better to stick with the original and then move on to the more niched versions. It’s the same game all around, but the seasonal versions feel pretty cheap compared to the much more robust original.
What do you think of seasonal Angry Birds updates? Fun way to celebrate, or sneaky way to cash in?

It’s the end of an era as a game besides Angry Birds finally sits at the top if the iPhone heap. And, it’s Scribblenauts!
Angry Birds may have over 500 million downloads, but it couldn’t possibly hold the top sales slot forever. Today it looks like the game’s time has finally come, with the App Store chart reporting that Scribblenauts Remix has officially taken the number one position.
For those keeping score, the current top three are Scribblenauts Remix, Angry Birds and Fruit Ninja.
The iOS version of Scribblenauts brings levels from both the original game and it only sequel so far, Super Scribblenauts. 5th Cell also added ten new levels to the game to keep it interesting for old players trying out new devices.
Speaking as someone that downloaded Scribblenauts Remix onto my iPad, I can say that the game was practically made for the device. I’m sure it feels equally natural on the iPhone. It’s nice to see an awesome game getting a little love; I think we were all a little tired of Angry Birds steamrolling everything. But, there’s no indicator of how long this pop may last.
Did you pick up Scribblenauts Remix? What did you think?

Recent numbers indicate that games for the two mobile platforms have outsold PSP and DS software. Like, by a lot.
Nintendo, I think, is considered the champion of handheld gaming. The Sony PSP has certainly made headway, and the shaky launch of the 3DS combined with Vita’s hype threatens Nintendo’s position in the market, but for the most part, they’ve ruled the handheld roost since launching the Game Boy way back in 1989. Pretty much everyone has a DS, right?
But a new challenger has appeared in recent years, one that has managed to put games in the hands of non-gamers and absolutely demolish both the PSP and Nintendo handhelds in terms of raw software sales: the mobile market.
According to numbers from Flurry, mobile games sales represented an astounding 58% of games sales in the last year, compared to 36% for the Nintendo DS and only 6% for the PSP. That means that mobile games have sold more software than the DS and PSP combined. Sony and Nintendo have earned around $1.4 billion in portable games sales this year, combined to $1.9 billion for Android market and iOS. The industry is certainly changing.
Mobile gaming is going to continue to dominate in terms of raw sales, but I think  the writer over at TechCrunch has this point severely wrong: “I think Sony and Nintendo have to come to grips with the fact that iOS and Android are capable of much richer play experiences than PSP or 3DSs are.”
He then goes on to list Angry Birds and Disney’s Mobile AppMates as evidence of these “rich” play experiences. That’s a pretty big jump when you start looking at some of the incredible games we’ve seen on handheld consoles, and when you consider that some of the best games on mobile systems are dumbed-down DS or PSP games.
But he’s right about one thing – by not developing games for the mobile market, Nintendo and Sony are missing a big profit opportunity.
What do you think of these new numbers? Do you think mobile platforms provide “richer” games than the DS or PSP?

The simple but addictive puzzler gives the games industry a new definition for “casual” and makes a zillion dollars in the process.
Angry Birds is more than a game, it’s a worldwide phenomenon. Developed by Finnish games-maker Rovio, the game is based on one simple mechanic – fire birds at structures and knock them over. After its release, Angry Birds became a massive success, topping download charts and bringing a new level of attention to mobile gaming.
As of today, it looks like Rovio can add one more accomplishment to the pile – Angry Birds has officially hit 500 million downloads worldwide.
It’s worth noting that the download total refers to the whole Angry Birds franchise and not just the original game, so Rio and Seasons are both included in the tally. Based on information from GamePro, Angry Birds players have logged over 200,000 years of playtime, a figure that simply blows the mind.
Here’s what Mike Hed, CEO of Rovio had to say:
“This is a fantastic landmark achievement for us, and we're extremely delighted to see such an incredible amount of people enjoying our games. We remain committed to creating more fun experiences and bringing exceptional quality to Angry Birds fans everywhere.”
I actually wrote a guide to Angry Birds a couple of weeks ago and it was my first contact with the game. I have to admit that it’s fun and easy to pick up, but I’m not sure I could see myself devoting specific time to finishing it with so many other games around. It definitely appeals to some gamers though, as many of my friends are addicted to it.
What do you think of Angry Birds? Are you one of the 500 million?

Find out what games real gamers selected as the best of the year, from a contest that earned over two million votes.
GamesMaster’s Golden Joystick Awards are different from other award given out in the games industry, because the people who select the winners are the people that play the games. The Golden Joysticks compile their list of winners based exclusively on votes from players, which means there are not usually any big surprises when the winners list comes out.
One could note that since the votes really only represent the popular gaming mind, excellent but less-known games don’t have much of a chance of winning. Either way, the awards do help us get a pretty good idea of what gamers liked in the last few months, and what they’re still playing. You’ll notice a big wins for Mojang (Minecraft), Ubisoft (Assassin’s Creed) and Rovio (Angry Birds), but the year clearly belongs to Activision/Blizzard (StarCraft, World of Warcraft, Black Ops and Guitar Hero). It probably doesn’t hurt that most of the titles on the list seem to be available for more than one system.
Here’s the list, compiled by GamePro:
Action/Adventure Game of the Year: Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood
Mobile Game of the Year: Angry Birds Rio
Roleplaying Game of the Year: Fallout: New Vegas
Massively Multiplayer Online Game of the Year: World of Warcraft
Fighting Game of the Year: Mortal Kombat
Racing Game of the Year: Gran Turismo 5
Sports Game of the Year: FIFA 11
Strategy Game of the Year: StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty
Music Game of the Year: Guitar Hero: Warriors of Rock
Free to Play Game of the Year: League of Legends
Downloadable Game of the Year: Minecraft
Shooter Game of the Year: Call of Duty: Black Ops
One to Watch Award: The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
Innovation of the Year: Nintendo 3DS
Outstanding Contribution: Sonic the Hedgehog
Ultimate Game of the Year: Portal 2
I’m pretty surprised to see the 3DS on the list, since it gets a lot of flak from players and the press, but I guess there weren’t’ many other innovations to speak of.
Remember that winners are taken exclusively from games that game out within the last 12 months, so don’t throw a hissy fit if your favorite game isn’t there unless you’re sure it’s eligible.
That being said, do you see anything in this list worth throwing a hissy fit over?

The developer of the runaway mobile gaming hit has chosen Shanghai as the location for its first international expansion, and the decision was no accident.
If you follow the statistics in the iTunes store or the general mobile games marketplace, it’s pretty obvious that one game is still dominating the rest – Angry Birds. The simple, quick and fun gameplay (so familiar to those of us that played games before we owned phones) caught on something fierce, and has turned Rovio into one of the most powerful forces in mobile gaming.
Now Rovio is looking to expand its opportunities in one of the most rapidly growing sectors in the world – China. The Angry Birds game is already a success in China, with 40 million downloads and counting, but Rovio hopes to capitalize on other opportunities offered by the nation.
Peter Vesterbacka, Chief Marketing Officer for Rovio, had this to say on the potential of the Chinese market:
"Rovio chose Shanghai as the first location for an international office because of its uniqueposition as one of the most creative and technologically advanced cities in the world, and also because Rovio wants to show its appreciation to Chinese fans by serving them even better locally.”
One market Rovio is especially hoping to penetrate is that of the “feature” phone, which is industry speak for any phone that doesn’t run off an advanced OS like Android or Apple’s iOS. According to China Daily, which broke the story, there are over a billion mobile phone users in China and almost all of those users still possess a basic feature phone.
This is a largely untapped market, and jumping in early will give Rovio the ability to line itself up as one of China’s premiere game developers. They’re already talking about acquiring smaller studios, so perhaps we’re witnessing the birth of a titan.
Are you a fan of Angry Birds? I’ve known the joy of smashing a few buildings since obtaining my iPad.

The anger moves from the skies to the waters. Angry Birds spin-off game, Angry Fish, has gone live on Xbox Live Indie Games.
Developed and published by Frozen Software, Angry Fish is, shall we say, almost an exact copy of Rovio's hit title. Except, obviously, for the bit where instead of birds, there are fish.
Notwithstanding the obvious copy, it actually looks to be a pretty fun game in and of itself. I don't quite understand what the cat is doing underwater, but oh well. Whatever suits them.
Angry Fish is now out on the XBL Indie Games, and is available for 80MS Points. I kinda doubt it will achieve the success that Angry Birds has (definitely no movie rights are anywhere in sight for Angry Fish), but since Microsoft still hasn't got them birds on board, unlike the PSN, this will have to do for now.
