Rayman Origins coming to PC DRM Free
Ubisoft have learnt from their past mistakes and making one of the best platformers and coolest games ever made DRM-free later this year.
Rayman Origins surprised everyone late last year with it's release seemingly from nowhere, it turned out to be one of the most colourful beautiful and friendly games I have ever seen, played or spent money on and if you have a PS3 or 360, I suggest you do the same.
Ubisoft announced that the Platformer will be out on March 30th on PC and in better news, all retail copies of the game will be shipped with no DRM. Digital versions will be saddled with whomever they are distributed through (i.e. Steam). So yes the very same Ubisoft who once said that "always on DRM"and regularly blames piracy for their lack of PC games, are sending a game out in the real world to deal with the pirates and hackers and evil people of the internets.
I think it's a bold move from Ubisoft to show they can make a game, have it be successful and (hopefully) port it successfully to the PC and still make a bundle off it. I think the game would really suit being on the PC, as more and more of my favourite platformers are turning up on there. Also with controller support from classic USB controllers and for those new-gen people who still want to use their 360, go right ahead.
The PC specs were also released and are as follows:
Here are the announced system specs:
Minimum configuration
OS:  Windows® XP SP3 / Windows Vista® SP2 / Windows® 7 SP1
Processor: Intel Pentium IV 3.00 Ghz or AMD Athlon64 3000+ @ 1.8 Ghz
Memory: 1 GB Windows XP / 1.5 GB Windows Vista – Windows 7
Graphics: 128 MB DirectX®9 / Radeon X600XT or GeForce 6800GT
DirectX®: DirectX 9.0c or higher
Sound: DirectX 9.0-compliant sound card
Recommended configuration
OS:  Windows® XP SP3 / Windows Vista® SP2 / Windows® 7 SP1
Processor: Intel Core2Duo E4400 @ 2.00 Ghz or AMD Athlon64X2 3800+ @ 2.00Ghz
Memory: 2 GB Windows XP / Vista / Windows 7
Graphics: 256 MB DirectX®9 / Radeon HD 2600XT or GeForce 8600GT
DirectX®: DirectX 9.0c or higher
Sound: DirectX 9.0-compliant sound card
Rayman Origins was release for the 360, PS3 and Wii last year in November. In addition to the PC, the game is also headed to the Playstation Vita and Nintendo 3DS on February 14 and March 20 respectively. It looks like Ubisoft have all the bases covered and I do hope it pays off for them. More Rayman Origins, less of the Rabbids, I say!

Steam releasing official iPhone and Android apps
Whilst it is in beta right now, Valve hope to roll it out properly before the end of 2012
I finally got my first smartphone this year and whilst I thought I was incredibly behind in my reaches for the most technically advanced thing since swearing robot's, it appears that big comapanies are only catching up to the big, bad mobile phone platform.
Steam released the app in it's current beta format yesterday and is only accessible to those who signed up for the beta on Steam can participate in the App which is for Android and iOS devices.
The app itself is not dissimilar to apps on both marketplaces which pertain to keeping up to date with your friends, browsing your community groups, profiles, check screenshots, user-generated content, sales and everything else Steam related. This is just an official app and it's free so it's good to see Steam not trying to compete with the other apps just for the dollar, dollar bill, y'all.
Gabe Newell spoke abou the service saying that it came "from many requests" from their user base. "Mobile is changing the way people interact, play games and consumer media, and the Steam app is part of our commitment to meet customer demands and expand the service functionality of Steam to make it richer and more accessible for everyone."
Anyone can currently download the app, put in their details and can browse till their hearts content. Hopefully it will all be optimised. I currently am not apart of the beta but will give my two cents when I can get a taste test of the cool little app.

Users are reporting serious problems with the PC version of Saints Row the Third.
2011 has definitely been the year of the buggy launch. We’ve seen Origin issues, an unavailable CoD Elite, Skyrim crashes, an inoperable Arkham City and a barely functioning RAGE. It certainly seems like developers had a hard time putting the final layer of polish on their games this year, and Saints Row the Third is apparently no exception.
Players of the PC version of Saints Row the Third are reporting that the game’s outdoor settings (of which there are many) cause their systems to slow down immensely, making the game nearly unplayable. The glitch only occurs in Saints Row’s open world – you know, the open world that’s supposed to be the entire core of the game.
Volition is working with users to get the issue resolved. They’re taking dxdiag files and talking to people on the official Saints Row and Steam forums in order to get some idea of what’s happening – the problem isn’t limited to AMD or NVIDIA hardware, so it’s going to take them some time to lock down.
While it’s nice to see the company interacting with players and trying to fix the problem, the immense number of broken titles we’ve seen this year is an interesting, and slightly alarming trend.
Do you think developers are getting sloppy?

It's not just you who finds the PC version problems for Rage frustrating. id Software boss, John Carmack, is one with you on that, actually. After all, they did aim to make no delineations in quality for both the console and PC versions.
Said Carmack, "We have had video drives issues that have caused problems and frustrations with our PC fans. Everyone at id Software is very upset by these issues which are mostly out of our control. We are working with both AMD/ATI and Nvidia to help them identify and fix the issues with their drivers."
As Tim Willits further corroborated, when the game was submitted to the "build system", they found the console versions to be "solid and bug-free." Unfortunately, the PC ones weren't.
What matters more to them now is to make sure that these issues be addressed immediately and efficiently. "We've had assurances that these problems are being addressed and new drivers will be available soon," said Carmack.
"We knew that all older AMD drivers, and some Nvidia dirvers would have problems with the game, but we were running well in-house on all of our test systems. When launch day came around and the wrong driver got released, half of our PC customers got a product that basically didn't work. The fact that the working driver has incompatibilities with other titles doesn't help either. Issues with older/lower end/ exotic setups are to be expected on a PC releaes, but we were not happy with the experience on what should be prime platforms."
In the end, this was what Carmack had to say about the issues that arose on their PC version of Rage -- and it's going to be quite controversial once again, definitely.
"We do not see the PC as the leading platform for games. That statement will enrage some people, but it is hard to characterize it otherwise; both console versions will have larger audiences than the PC version. A high end PC is nearly 10 times as powerful as a console, and we could unquestionably provide a better experience if we chose that as our design point and we were able to expent the same amount of resources on it."
To cushion the driver ssues, Bethesda had previously offered PC Performance tips to PC gamers. Oh well, them's the breaks. Rage set out to have it all, but unfortunately, the PC version just couldn't catch the wave alongside the console ones.

The game developer struggles to keep up with an enormous wave of bug reports, graphical errors, performance issues and driver problems.
It wasn’t but a few hours after yesterday’s launch of “Rage” that reports started to trickle in about problems with the PC version of the game. Screen tearing, missing textures and a variety of other problems were reported by users of both Nvidia and AMD graphics cards, and Bethesda worked to remedy the situation by advising people to update their drivers and eventually released an updated set specifically for “Rage.”
While this seems to have solved a large number of the issues being reported, Bethesda is still working with the PC gaming populace and has posted a massive list of troubleshooting techniques for those users still experiencing problems after updating to the new drivers.
The list is pretty in-depth and I imagine will be continually updated as Bethesda targets and resolves issues as they are reported by gamers. It’s unfortunate to see such a well-reviewed game experience this much difficulty at launch, as there’s no telling how many players may have simply given up and moved on to other titles.
Unfortunately for casual PC gamers like myself, the solutions currently offered by Bethesda involve modifying settings that aren’t necessarily represented in the game’s built-in menus.
For example:
“The user can force V-sync on or off in the graphics vendor control panel. Right-click on the desktop to access the graphics vendor control panel.
If V-sync is forced on then RAGE will always V-sync.
If V-sync is forced off then RAGE will auto-detect that V-sync is not working and RAGE will instead synchronize to real-time and screen tearing may occur.
Alternatively you can force V-sync on by adding the following to the RAGE launch options in Steam:
+r_swapInterval 1”
I’m sure that paragraph means something to some PC gamers, but it looks like a bunch of gibberish to me. I guess less tech-savvy players will just need to wait until an official fix is patched into the game, which I’m sure won’t take too long considering the sheer volume of the complaints.
Are you experiencing any issues with “Rage?” How did you fix them?

If there's one thing that the Deus Ex: Human Revolution developers are proud of, it's the fact that they spent just as much time working on the PC version of the game as they did with its console counterparts.
It's an age-old tale: game gets developed for consoles, PC gets shoddy version. Eidos isn't about to fall into that cycle of convenience and laziness, however, and has reassured PC fans through their interview with GameSpy that the PC version was designed on PC first, for consoles.
Said Eidos Montreal director of technology, Julien Bouvrais:
"Obviously, while console versions of the game were part of the picture, PC was also a big focus. It was simply out of the question to do a straight port of the console version to PC, while being able to keep the essence of the adventure we experienced seven years before. With this in mind, we started exploring ways to best create the whole Deus Ex: Human Revolution project -- console and PC."
For the PC version of the game, developer Nixxes developed a specific X11 renderer for the platform. Furthered Bouvrais:
"We did leverage this by adding several features you will see when you have DX11 hardware on your PC: a real-time tessellation, improved Screen Space Ambient Occlusion, improved blurs and depth of field. We also added custom support for AMD's Eyefinity (multiple monitors), and 3DHD. On another note, the user interface has been tailored for the keyboard, and mouse controls can be fully customizable for your gaming habits."
Now that Deus Ex: Human Revolution has gone gold, you should already have checked if your hardware meets the specific requirements of the game. Are you ready for it?
