You know, that Facebook store that no one knew existed.
Did you know that Facebook has storefronts where you can buy things from your favorite companies? Me neither. And, apparently, neither did the 3.5 million people that follow GameStop on the social networking site. Thanks to the total lack of interest, GameStop has officially shut down its Facebook store just six months after launch.
Apparently, Facebook shopping was supposed to be the next big thing in online retail. Some analysts thought that Facebook would turn into its very own shopping destination. However, it turns out that people don’t really feel like buying stuff when they’re hanging out with their friends. Not to mention that the entire effort was poorly marketed—most customers didn’t even realize that retailers even had a Facebook store.
GameStop isn’t alone in this disaster. Gap, J.C. Penny and Nordstrom have all open and then shut down Facebook stores in just the last 12 months. Overall, the experiment was a far cry from the Amazon and PayPal threat it was made out to be.
Did you ever make a purchase through GameStop Facebook? Did you even know that was a thing?

If you’re eagerly anticipating Dragon’s Dogma, you’re going to have to wait just a bit longer.
Capcom announced early this week that Dragon’s Dogma, its upcoming action-adventure title, would unfortunately have its release pushed back a bit. The game is now slated for a North American release on May 22, and a European release on May 25. That’s a pretty big jump from the target dates, which were March 27 and May 1st respectively.
The news isn’t all bad, however, as Capcom confirmed that Dragon’s Dogma would come with a special code redeemable for access to the Resident Evil 6 demo. Xbox users will have access to the demo on July 3, while PS3 players will have to wait until September 4. If you’re a cross-platform gamer, it looks like Xbox 360 is going to be the better system (assuming you’re buying the game to land the demo).
The delay also gives you more time to pre-order and land some bonus content – GameStop is offering a “Pawn Upgrade Pack,” Best Buy has an “Amor Upgrade Pack,” and Amazon is pushing the “Weapon Upgrade Pack.” Make of that what you will.
Are you looking forward to Dragon’s Dogma? What about the Resident Evil 6 demo?

The bloody hack and slash game gets an official release date, and a few in-box goodies.
Are you ready for a brand-new Ninja Gaiden game? If you’re not, don’t worry – you have about four months to get your shurikens sharpened and your bandanas tightened. Tecmo Koei’s Ninja Gaiden 3, the first original in the series since the series’ developer left Team Ninja, is officially dated for March 20, 2012.
But that’s not all. If you pre-order Ninja Gaiden 3, through Amazon or GameStop, you’ll receive a two-character demo for Dead or Alive 5. The GameStop version features Hitomi and Ryu, while the Amazon version boasts Hyate and Ayane. If you purchase the game’s $100 collector’s edition, you’ll land a demo disc with all four characters unlocked.
The CE is pretty standard – art book, action figure, soundtrack – but the inclusion of a demo is a nice touch. I wish more developers would include demos with their products; a demo disc is the only reason I even knew Dead or Alive existed (this was back in the Dreamcast days).
Whatever version you buy, Ninja Gaiden 3 promises the same wall-running, sword swinging and beautiful graphics seen in other iterations of the franchise, as well as a competitive multiplayer mode. It’s unclear how multiplayer will end up playing out, but it certainly seems like it has potential.
Are you looking forward to Ninja Gaiden 3? What about multiplayer?

The pre-order exclusives for Final Fantasy XIII-2 just keep on coming, with Square Enix and GameStop announcing yet another bonus for pre-order customers.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 is supposed to be everything that Final Fantasy XIII wasn’t, but we won’t know if Square Enix has succeeded at that until later next year. In the meantime, all we have to go on are the pre-order bonuses that keep cropping up all over the place, with everything from boss fights to bonus weapons being mentioned depending on where you choose to buy.
GameStop already has the exclusive costume for Serah, but it looks like they realized that Amazon has the drop on them with the Omega boss battle, so they’re upping the ante with this weapon:
The Genji Bow takes the form of either a bow or sword (duh) and allows you to attack more frequently, whatever that means. Not sure if it refills your ATB gauge faster or gives you a haste bonus, but it’s an in-combat boost either way. Here’s the catch though: the Genji Bow is only available to PowerUP Rewards members that pre-order the game; regular pre-orders will not receive anything besides the costume.
The bonus item is retroactive – if you’ve already pre-ordered and you’re a member, you’ll automatically receive it with your copy of FFXIII-2.
Pre-order bonuses mostly serve to make games review-proof by encouraging people to buy things before they read about them or try them, but we’re starting to see bonuses splintered into more and more specific tiers.
What do you think about offering a reward only to special sections of your customer base?

If you though Europe was going to get all of the good stuff, this announcement should warm your Final Fantasy-loving heart.
We heard last month that Final Fantasy XII-2 would be getting a pretty cool collector’s edition when released in the European market, but Square Enix was quiet about whether fans in the States could expect to see something similar.
Well, the wait is over. Here is your Final Fantasy XIII-2 Collector’s Edition:
And if you’re one of the people that decides to upgrade your game to the CE, here’s what you can expect to find:
“Premium” packaging with art by Yoshitaka Amano
4-disc game soundtrack
Concept art book
It’s not really a massive collector’s edition compared to some of the craziness we’ve seen lately, but it is priced at a much more comfortable $79.99. That’s only $20 more than usual, as opposed to Skyrim’s insane price doubling.
You can order the CE from Amazon or at Best Buy or GameStop, with different bonuses depending on where you go. GameStop orders receive a costume for Serah, Amazon customers get the Omega fight, and Best Buy orders get a prequel novel. I’d say Amazon has the edge here.
What would you like to see added to the Final Fantasy XIII-2 Collector’s Edition?

The enormous online retailer offers a pretty sweet deal for gamers looking to pick up more than one of the biggest titles of the year.
Let’s face it, 2011 is a ridiculous year for games. There are so many great titles coming out this year that it’s a wonder we’ll find time to play them all. And, unfortunately, it seems that a large majority of the best titles are hitting shelves all within the same general timeframe. While it makes sense for developers to target the holiday season, it’s pretty tough on passionate gamers who have to think with their wallets.
On the plus side, Amazon.com is making it a little easier to get the games you want with a limited time buy two, get one free promotion. They’re not junk games, either – I see Arkham City, Gears 3, Kirby’s Return to Dream Land, Pokémon Rumble Blast, Dark Souls and Rage on the list, in addition to plenty of others.
Here’s the way it works – you buy any three games on the list from Amazon, and they’ll comp you the cheapest one. If you were planning to buy any three of the games you choose anyway, you’re coming out a little bit ahead of where you would have been. There are plenty of cheap games on the list, so this may be the perfect opportunity to pick up a few titles you may have missed this year.
I think I’m going to grab Super Paper Mario, Kirby’s Return to Dream Land and Arkham City. What three games are you putting in your Amazon cart?

The latest iteration in the zombie-killing, survival horror franchise gets an official update and a few collectors’ edition goodies.
If you love avoiding the effects of the T-virus, exploring scary environments filled with zombies, and generally doing all things Resident Evil, you’re in luck – the next game in the series is headed your way on March 12, 2012. Capcom confirmed the release date late this week, and with it, some details regarding what fans can expect from the game and its collector’s edition.
Raccoon City features six different playable characters, a marked change from Resident Evils of the past. Gamers who pre-order from Best Buy, Amazon or GameStop will receive a special costume for all six characters in addition to a set of weapons specifically reserved for those who plunk their money down early – useful considering this specific iteration of the franchise will focus more on action and less on survival.
Here’s what you’ll see in the collector’s edition:
• Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City
• Steelbook with exclusive art
• Stylized foil sleeve
• Umbrella Security Service and Spec Ops Field Unit embroidered patches
• All eight bonus weapons
Operation Raccoon City will hit shelves on March 20th, 2012, but only for PS3 and Xbox 360 owners. While a PC version of the game has been confirmed, there is no official release date available.

Competing pre-order bonuses and insane media hype have changed the gaming world forever, creating an entire collection of games immune from criticism.
I was talking to a friend the other night about some of the upcoming titles this holiday season, and he pointed out something that I hadn’t yet considered regarding the motivation for competitive pre-order bonuses. While I originally thought that the different bonuses were offered by different retailers in order to sway gamers from one location to the other, my friend noted that from the developer/publisher point of view, it doesn’t really matter where you buy your game.
Take Arkham City, for example: GameStop had challenge maps, Best Buy had Robin DLC, Amazon had a digital-only collector’s book and Toys R Us had an action figure. No matter where you ended up buying the game, Rocksteady still ended up with some of your money. As gamers interested in the title, our role has been switched from finding good games to buy to finding the best pre-order value. At some point, we stopped waiting to see what the industry or critics would say about a game and started buying on faith, usually based on previous experiences.
This pre-order mania has created games that are, in essence, review-proof. If you pre-ordered Skyrim, Battlefield 3, Skyward Sword, Modern Warfare 3, Uncharted 3 and Arkham City (all sequels!), then it’s not really going to matter what anyone in the gaming press has to say about the title. Your money is already spent, and you’re already invested in the experience. When several retailers offer competing pre-order deals, it only helps the game publisher cement its separation from the review process – after all, if you want that exclusive content, you’ll have to buy the game long before you can read a comprehensive review.
Of course, it’s worth noting that when all the big titles are sequels, gamers have a generally good idea of what to expect. We’re also lavished with demos and betas, so perhaps the review process has simply shifted to the perception and experiences of gamers rather than the select few people that receive advance review copies.
What do you think? Are pre-order bonuses helping to protect games from critical reviews? Is it fair that some locations have exclusive content that other gamers won’t be able to access?

The new Sony handheld benefits from massive pre-release demand in the country that can often make or break a new system.
According to RPG Site, two of Japan’s biggest online retailers have completely sold out of their PS Vita pre-order stock. In other words, if you didn’t pre-order the system, you’re not getting one when it hits shelves in December. While this is by no means a complete sellout of every Vita on the market, it’s still a strong indicator that the handheld is likely going to be in short supply upon release.
Both Amazon.jp and Yodobashi are sold out of PS Vitas for the moment, even with two different versions of the system to offer. Concerns over the 20mb cap imposed on the 3G version in Japan don’t seem to have dissuaded gamers from pre-ordering the system, and enthusiasm is clearly high.
I tried to Google translate the Japanese blog, Esuteru, that initially broke the story, and the headline I got was, “PlayStation Vita net shop's availability, nearly destroyed the state there is no hope anymore.” While this information is certainly disconcerting, it’s probably more of a translation issue that any real problem with the state or the general hopes of mankind.
Whatever that blog actually says, it does confirm that Amazon, Yodobashi, Bic Camera, Sofmap and Joshin are currently out of pre-orders – these sites represent the largest Japanese online portals for purchasing games and systems.
It will be interesting to see if this enthusiasm carries over into the North American launch, now dated for March. Demand is certainly high, but without a holiday season, perhaps the Vita will be a little easier to come by here in the States.
What do you make of the Vita’s newfound success? Also, can anyone tell me what that webpage actually says?

While Sony never gave an official release date, most retailers had the Vita scheduled for December. Unfortunately, it looks like that’s no longer the case.
If you’ve pre-ordered a PlayStation Vita or checked one out online, you probably noticed that the device was due sometime in December. While games retailers didn’t have an official date (as Sony never announced one), most seemed to be convinced the cutting-edge handheld would show up on shelves sometime during the holiday season.
Unfortunately, those dreams have been crushed by Amazon.com, which has updated its shipping date from Decemberish to March 31st. Most industry experts predicted a spring release and it’s not really clear why retailers were so convinced that the unit would ship sooner, but whatever the reason you’re going to have to wait until March to pick up your brand new PlayStation Vita.
The Vita marks the first time a dedicated handheld gaming system will be compatible with 3G networks, allowing users to download games and play online wherever they can pick up a signal. This service won’t be free, however, and anyone that wants to take advantage of the 3G version’s extra features will need to pay for some sort of data package from AT&T.
Concerns over the Japanese Vita’s data cap of 20 megabytes have been raised regarding the North American release, but theres’ still no hard data on whether or not the unit will ship with some sort of cap or bandwidth limitation. Sony devotees will just have to wait and see what the company works out with AT&T. Hopefully there’s some sort of information made public before the device launches in March.
In my experience, Sony is happy to provide gamers with everything they desire, as long as the price is right.

Borderlands 2 has so far kept details on its release date pretty much hush-hush. But what's this we hear that online retailer has got something to say about, and more importantly, a specific date at that?
Reports allege that Amazon has been sending out emails, confirming that Borderlands 2 is now available for pre-order from their stores. On top of that, however, is the supposed confirmation that the release date of the game will be on June 30, 2012.
Now, publisher Gearbox Software has not said anything about a June 2012 release date, so we're obviously going to have to tag this as a rumor for now. It's not all too improbable, though, as earlier in September, the beta testing for the game went underway.
They also rolled out some cool gameplay videos, which ought to give us a clearer picture of what's going to go down in Borderlands 2. "Bigger" and "wider" are what they promised us it's going to be, after all.
