Ó

THQ hasn’t been doing great over the last few months, and this nasty letter from a former employee doesn’t make things look any better.
THQ, the company behind Saints Row: The Third, had a tough 2011. The company was in such dire straits that rumors floated around about it canceling its entire 2014 lineup, rumors the company vehemently denied. This morning we received word that THQ was shifting its strategies yet again, this time focusing more on its core franchises over third party licensing.
It’s hard to get a bead on exactly what’s happening with THQ. Rumors and sales indicate the company is in serious trouble despite the success of Saints Row, but the company refuses to admit that they have any sort of problem. Only one person seems to be willing to comment on the state of the company – an alleged former employee with an obvious bone to pick.
In a letter written to THQ’s Board of Directors, CEO Brian Farrell as well as the general public and a collection of gaming news sites, this “Formerly Mismanaged” employee rattles off a laundry lists of complaints about the company.
The letter essentially claims that THQ’s problems stem from mismanagement and a Board of Directors that has no clue how to strategically run a gaming company. It gives examples like acquiring game studios with no plan on how to utilize their talents (then later shutting them down), investing money into shrinking niche markets, the company’s refusal to dump a CEO that has tanked its stock price and high-paid executives making enormous mistakes that call their competency into question. The disastrous uDraw tablet also makes an appearance.
These allegations of management incompetency surface just a few days before THQ announces its current financial standing on February 2, and things certainly don’t look good. One analyst has gone on the record by stating that THQ, without some sort of financial windfall, with run out of cash near the middle of this year.
You can read the letter in its (extremely long) entirety below:
[JoyStiq]
"To:
THQ Board of Directors
Lawrence Burstein
James Whims, Gigex, Inc.
Henry DeNero, Arcturus Capital
Brian Dougherty, AirSet, Inc.
Jeffrey Griffiths , Lumber Liquidators
From:
Current and Ex-Employees, Shareholders, and The Public
Dear THQ Board,
I am an ex-employee at THQ. I saw the tweet-started headlines over the past week from an "industry expert." This expert is one who I and my friends and co-workers in the industry have never heard of after a long time in the field. I had been reading the various following articles and accounts and it generated sympathy for friends both recently laid off and currently still there. I thought it would be a good idea to send a note with their input. This note has honest facts and thoughts about THQ and the current problems there. Most of these facts are public knowledge and they have been confirmed by public records or can be confirmed by current and former THQ staff there both before and after my and their time.
I have long felt the need to explain to outsiders how this beaten-down company has wound up in this position. It is to the point where having it on your resume is not a point in your favor. And that shouldn't be the case. I'm/We're sending this note anonymously because some of us are still awaiting final checks and others know how little corporations like employees who air their dirty laundry. We feel the need to say something to combat the partial misinformation being written.
THQ had been known through the years for having a formula. They find a hot license, make a cheap game, barely advertise it, and make money. This formula worked during the Playstation and Xbox and Gameboy days and made the company a lot of cash. Unfortunately, THQ's old guard executives seem to be stuck trying to manage the company the same way they did back then and haven't realized the industry has changed.
The beginning of the end came years ago as Brian Farrell lead an executive team to acquire a large number of studios. A large amount of cash was used in the acquisition or setup of game developers with different degrees of talent. The problem was they were bought without strategic reasoning or specific plan on to use them. So after awhile another large amount of money was spent as those studios failed and were sold off and shut down. The executive team at the time were an entirely different group of people with one key exception in the CEO. The CEO/the then executive team wasted the cash that the company had built up with these massive investments and selloffs.
The studio purchase errors were not helped by the mistakes in the licensing deals that were signed by the same CEO. Millions and millions of dollars were wasted on acquiring licenses at the same time the kids, family, casual business was declining at a rapid rate. Instead of slowing those acquisitions he overpaid for more of them until again cash was wasted in paying for brands that didn't sell well anymore.
The mistakes in decisions and cash losses triggered wave after wave of layoffs. In the most recent wave, about 40 people lost their jobs this past December through no fault of their own. The reason why is the chronic and constant mismanagement of their company. The fact is that the CEO and executive committee were so focused on trying to hit an unrealistic financial goal that they bet everything on an extremely risky proposition in the uDraw tablet. When they lost, they further displayed their lack of management skills by not having a contingency plan. Three weeks after the game launched, an entire business unit was wiped out when it didn't meet its goal due to relying on that one product to hit an unrealistic target.
After the layoffs many ex-employees walked around shell-shocked and trying to figure out who was responsible. They came to the understanding that most of us do after leaving the company. The issue with THQ has never been one of lack of staff creativity, intellect or business intelligence. It all rests of the failure of its management team and you the Board of Directors.
This Board has allowed the Brian Farrell, the CEO, the ongoing ability to take a cash-rich profitable company and drive it from a $30 share price down to around $.70 without acting despite numerous mistakes that even for those lacking business training, could see were errors. Even without glaring mistakes how can the same CEO stay in charge after a 99% share price loss? Aside from the board, who is responsible for the current situation and who is accountable for the current and future job losses at the company? When you ask the recently departed who are a good source of information, you get the same answers. This uDraw failure is the largest and most recent one in a string of them that were hushed over and hidden. The answer aside from the Board is the current executive team that allowed this uDraw implosion to happen.
Brian Farrell, CEO with a 2011 salary of $1,289,558, for a lack of business intelligence or fiscal accountability. A vocal inside group pointed out the mistake of trying to launch a year-old product that received almost no software support in the last 12 months. Instead of listening and having a back-up plan, he went ahead and invested a ridiculous amount of money in the manufacturing and advertising of the product and failed miserably. It is passed time for him to go. We are wondering what is taking so long for you to act. We have been wondering this same question for a long time.
Martin Good, EVP and head of Kids, Family, Casual with a 2011 salary of $1,198,023, for bringing no strategic thought or business sense to the role. He was brought out from Australia sales to replace an outgoing head of the business unit and rapidly displayed a complete lack of leadership skills, vision, and any sort of analytical sense. Looking at his compensation package, he is an excellent negotiator as his salary is higher than anyone's except for the CEO. On the plus side he lost his job with the rest of those laid off. On the minus side, he will be floating down on a golden parachute while the rest of the former employees scramble to look for jobs in this challenging environment. Most of those jobs will be at studios in other parts of the country, so they will be forced to relocate their families in the middle of their childrens school years. It is incredible that he made this level of income while doing such a poor job, but it serves as a reflection of the lack of Brian Farrell's ability to staff well and manage.
Paul Pucino, CFO with a 2011 salary of $674,855, for not planning for this possibility and having a safety net or a plan to cover THQ just in case of failure. We have a line of credit that we likely used to buy the plastic that is not selling to customers. It is like taking a cash advance to buy THQ stock and just as worthless of an investment. Paul is known as an absentee executive who is missing when business situations gets complicated. While he was in the loop at the point of the risk, with the following failure he has been clearly unavailable. It is another example of Brian Farrell's inability to staff.
Ian Curran, EVP and head of global publishing with a 2011 salary of $1,037,047, for not flagging an unrealistic sales goal to the CEO or the Board when a big part of the corporation felt the numbers were unrealistic. He blindly held up an unachievable target and didn't act when multiple people told him he was aiming to high and out of step with the marketplace. If a sales executive's job is to anticipate the market, he has done a poor job of it. Another example of Brian Farrell not being able to find the right people for the right job.
Ed Kauffman, EVP of Legal and Business Affairs who clearly was signing bad deals on licensed products, not factoring in the changes in the business and being more critical with financial terms with partners. uDraw by itself cannot possibly explain the companies poor financial health. It is a combination of that product and a string of bad licensed deals that the company took on against better judgement. While Brain Farrell would logically be the final decisionmaker for deals, Kauffman is either unpersuasive in his arguments to not do them or supported them. Either situation equates to another example of poor staffing choices by the CEO.
uDraw was failure and the only people to blame are the people listed above. THQ and its current financial situation is also their responsibility. And they were paid around $4.5 million dollars for their poor decisions. If there is any doubt we would recommend talking to current and former staff to get the straight story. Don't read this note as bitterness on their part, but more as long overdue truth.
So, Board, it is time. Passed time for you to act and passed time for you to do something about the mismanagement that has gone on for too many years. We've watched the stock from the outside and read the comments and the reason why the company is valued so low despite its sales is because of this underqualified management team.
Board it is time for you to act before your names are added to the list above of things that must change.
Sincerely,
The Formerly Mismanaged"

American Arcade Business is back in High Score
Remember when you didn't play games at home? No not outside, I mean arcade games.
The old arcade. The smell of the old machines, the sounds with each beckon and call that will hopefully get you to pop a few dollars into it. Why? Just for your amusement. Well with movies like King of Kong and the rise in Arcade machines as trophy items for game collectors, TNT Amusements has struck a deal with production company PBR Productions to produce a reality show.
It's currently called High Score, but will be subject to change depending on who might pick it up. The show is about the "American Restoration" of the arcade machine and pinball world, with Todd Tuckey, the proprietor of TNT Amusements, leads a crew to hunt all over the country to find much-loved amusement machines of the past and restores them back to their working beauty.
The show is ripe for the picking as I actually know a mate of mine who's Dad has a hobby of restoring pinball machines and hiring them out for birthday parties. It's oddly a lucrative market and the show doesn't sound too bad. It'd follow Todd and his crew from acquisition to sale. The sales include going to a large clientell which include celebrities
“This show will help all the collecting world I think as it will get people re-interested in pinball machines and arcade video games! It's a win win for all” said Todd Tuckey of TNT Amuesments.
The crew at TNT Amusements is a lovable cast of characters that walk you through the restorations from start to finish. Tuckey is no stranger to screen as his success in the industry has led him to speaking engagements, for his own 30-minute television special, and being featured on the reality TV show “Kendra” (one of his clients). High Score is currently courting cable networks and other reality television distribution partners. A 22 minute pilot episode has already been created and you can view bits of the show above.
The series is produced and created by Nate Hall and Corey Armideo of Pioneers Beyond Reality. About TNT Amuesments TNT Amuesments is the worlds largest used game show room with over 120 pieces on display in a 4,000 square foot area, which if you think about it that will grow more and more as the show goes on.
Tuckey began a Video Game route in 1979, installing games in stores in the Philadelphia area, unfortunately by 1984, the boom had dried up and arcade parlours began to dry up. They now sit in the back of pizza places, basements and in the home's of video game generation adults, but Tuckey is on the hunt to find, fix and fully restore these machines back to their working glory, I'm pretty excited to see the show air.

Commander Shepard’s last hurrah has the bonuses to match in this special edition of the game.
Hey, do you like Mass Effect? If so, you’re probably excited about the next entry in the franchise, Mass Effect 3. And if you needed reason to be a little more excited, why, we have just the thing for you. It’s the Mass Effect 3 N7 Collector’s Edition, and it comes with all the accoutrements you’ve come to expect from slightly larger boxes that contain video games and other stuff.
Check it out:
The pack only runs $79.99, which is pretty fair considering some of the other CE nonsense we’ve seen in recent months (Skyrim, I’m looking at you). For an extra $20, here’s what you can expect to find in your ME3 box, straight from Bioware:
• Premium metal case featuring commemorative artwork of Commander Shepard.
• 70-page hardbound art book featuring hundreds of unique and gorgeous illustrations from the BioWare development team.
• Limited edition Mass Effect comic by Dark Horse Comics, complete with unique cover artwork.
• Join the ranks of the N7 with the premium fabric N7 patch.
• Exclusive 4x6 lithographic print featuring a one-of-a-kind piece of artwork.
• A full collection of in-game content that can’t be found anywhere else!
• N7 Arsenal Pack – Bring the firepower with the N7 Sniper Rifle, Shotgun, SMG, and Pistol.
• Robotic Dog – A faithful sidekick to keep you company on board the Normandy.
• Squadmate Alternate Outfit Pack – New appearances for your favorite squad members.
• N7 Hoodie – For Commander Shepard’s casual days on board the Normandy.
• Relive all the greatest moments of Mass Effect 3 with the digital soundtrack.
• Xbox LIVE Normandy prop for your Avatar. (Available on Xbox 360 version only.)
• Display your initiation in the N7 ranks with a collection of forum and social badges, avatars, and perks
Bioware says the CE is “limited supply,” but we’ve all seen how that usually plays out. Still, if you want to pick up the game and the extras are your type of thing, you may as well reserve it.
I am!

The graphics card developer touts brighter colors, comfortable glasses and a more immersive experience than ever before.
Today seems like the day of 3D news, first with the announcement of 3D support for Assassin’s Creed Revelations and now with an update from NVIDIA regarding the next iteration of their 3D Vision accessories. The company is promising a much more enjoyable experience, with a greater field of view, less eye strain, and reduced ghosting from monitors.
I’ll let NVIDIA explain what they’ve changed, straight from their press release:
"NVIDIA 3D LightBoost technology makes 3D games, movies and photos more stunning and life-like than ever before," said David Wung, senior director of product management of Open Platform Business (OPBG) Group for ASUS Computer International. "With 3D LightBoost and our new full-HD monitors, colors are richer, textures and subtle image details virtually jump off the screen, and the overall quality of the experience is something to behold. We are thrilled to be the first desktop display manufacturer to bring this new level of 3D visual quality to our customers with the ASUS VG278H."
That certainly sounds promising. Of course, it’s a press release, and press releases are designed to sound promising. What we know for sure is that the current generation of 3D technology simply isn’t that great, and it’s going to take a major innovation in image quality and comfort to push 3D from a fringe passion to a mainstream habit.
On the plus side, you can check out NVIDIA’s new 3D system for a relatively low cost, depending on how much money you prefer to invest in gaming experiments:
The 3D Vision 2 glasses kit, which includes one pair of 3D Vision 2 glasses and a wireless USB IR emitter will be available from the leading retailers/e-tailers worldwide in October for $149 (USD MSRP). It will also be available on the NVIDIA online store
Look for the new 3D Vision system to hit shelves sometime in October of this year.

The gaming website updates Rage players on a new patch and the game’s terrible launch, but has a little fun in the process.
Rage had been out for what seemed like minutes when users started reporting serious problems with the PC version of the game. Blurry textures, screen tearing and texture pop were among the most common complaints, with the studio rushing to publish an updated driver for gamers bummed about such a terrible release.
Today, Joystiq covered an interview with id co-founder John Carmack regarding what he calls the “cluster!@#$” of a launch, but they also couldn’t help having some fun at the developer’s expense. Here’s the screenshot from the site:
It’s a friendly joke to be sure, but the content of the post is still pretty important from the perspective of a gamer. Carmack has plenty to say on the launch, especially when it comes to the difficulty of dealing with a variety of PC setups and console limitations:
"You can choose to design a game around the specs of a high-end PC and make console versions that fail to hit the design point, or design around the specs of the consoles and have a high-end PC provide incremental quality improvements. We chose the latter."
“When launch day came around and the wrong driver got released, half of our PC customers got a product that basically didn't work.”
Most of the issues with Rage have apparently been cleaned up by a patch, and those users still experiencing display errors should check out this Steam thread on getting them resolved.
Do you think Joystiq’s joke is a fair hit against a troubled release, or is it too soon for gamers that experience very real issues?

Fans of the uber adorable, crazy Rabbids are in for a treat -- in 2013, that is.
Ubisoft proudly announced that their unlikely villains to Rayman's heroic existence are getting the star treatment in Nickelodeon's planned animated TV series. The series will reportedly feature 26 half-hour long episodes, and will be shown worldwide, making the Rabbids' quest for world domination fulfilled even at least on the boob tube.
France, however, will be exempt from this rabbid display of the Rabbids come 2013, since Ubisoft's own Motion Pictures studio is working on their local offices (Ubisoft is French, in case you didn't know), for the show.
As to what slant this animated series will take on, we're not quite sure yet. Nonetheless, we're just all too happy that these bunnies are going to have their time under the Hollywood sun. In the meantime, do enjoy these videos of the Rabbids in action, from their previous outings.

If you’ve ever wanted to see someone perform an upside-down grind on the bottom of a helicopter, today is definitely your day.
Ever since “SSX Tricky,” it seems like the primary goal of the SSX franchise is creating the most ridiculous scenarios imaginable, then asking you to snowboard through them (while looking cool). This brand new trailer for the next game in the series, recently changed from “SSX: Deadly Descents” to “SSX: Defy Reality,” doesn’t give us any indication that EA is going to tone things down in the near future.
Massive airs, insane grinds, and well-realized natural courses are on display in full, as are the mid-air acrobatics you’ve come to expect from an “SSX” title. Check it out:
The game’s focus seems to have shifted from conquering one mountain to becoming a world champion snowboarder, instead choosing to painstakingly recreate real-life snowboarding spots using data from NASA satellites. This means that the next time you sail over a house with your snowboard in your hands, you should remind yourself that it’s a real house and the person that lives there probably doesn’t care for snowboard-wielding hooligans.
The game also boasts a complete lack of invisible walls, which I never really noticed in the “SSX” franchise thanks to the very real cliffs they use instead. Seems like when your entire game takes place on the sides of mountains, you don’t have to do much to keep players where you want them.
There’s no official release date for “Defy Reality,” but you can look forward to playing it sometime in 2012.

The patch didn't release simultaneously on both consoles, however, with the Xbox 360 getting it first. PS3 owners will have to wait a bit later, specifically a few more days.
The update also included a lot of changes for the characters, which definitely gives a boost to those who are not as competitive to begin with. In the meantime, here are the gameplay fixes and tweaks now available on Mortal Kombat's latest update:
General Gameplay Fixes/Tweaks
Fixed a couple of crash scenarios.
DLC billboards should now behave correctly on Xbox
You should no longer see online desyncs on Xbox that are related to alternate costumes or classic costume DLC packs.
MOTD handling and displaying code was tweaked.
Fixed a bug that could have resulted in tweakvars getting corrupted.
Fixed a crash in player select if you tried to exit out while the dlc box was open.
With the exception of Human Cyrax and Human Sektor, everyone’s alternate costumes should behave the same as their primary costumes and have the exact same move properties.
You can now block after a dash forward is completed if it was cancelled into from a special move. You canceling out of a dash into another dash was normalized for most of the characters. Dash Block canceling remains the same.
Wakeup attacks should have better invulnerability on them if done in the first 4 frames of the wakeup window. (this was added as a hotfix tweakable value)
You no longer get a completely free throw attempt after someone blocks your jump punch. The opponent has less block hit frames but chained combos from a jump punch will remain the same.
There were several reactions that could freeze players just before they landed from attacks and reactions such as Kano’s Airball and Cyrax’s Net air reaction.
Made many minor hitbox adjustments.
Tweaked the negative edge window.
Several low attacks were being parried incorrectly.
Nightwolf and Kenshi can no longer still absorb a projectile if they get hit out of their enhanced reflects before the recovery frames start.
The Mortal Kombat continues to expand its reach, but despite fans' clamor, a Street Fighter vs. Mortal Kombat title is "easier said than done", this according to Capcom's big boss himself, Yoshinori Ono.

If you're all about the unlocks and rewards in a game, then Battlefield 3 is surely going to be an enjoyable treat for you. According to the latest Battleblog entry, the game will yield an enormous breadth of goods that will basically keep you busy for years.
From weapns to attachments to gadgets, all will be cramped in this one game , on top of a "huge unlock tree for vehicles alone."
There are also Service Stars to reward all you hardcore gamers, always up for the challenge. So explained:
"Anytime your kill card is displayed, everyone will see exactly how experienced you are with your current equipment. The ultimate bragging right would be for a player to be awarded the rank of Colonel with 100 Service Stars attached, and to have 100 stars in all weapons, kits, and vehicles. Getting there will be a massive task - consider that a challenge."
In all, this brings the unlocks and rewards for Battlefield 3 to ten times as much as that which Battlefield 2 had.
This news should be a breath of fresh air from all the Steam issue that's steaming up Battlefield 3's release. It's been recently revealed that EA's game won't be coming up on Valve's online digital distribution service, and the publisher has subsequently been defending this stance.
Regardless, Battlefield 3 comes out for the PC, PS3 and Xbox 360 this coming October 25th.
