Nintendo finally brings the Wii into 2011. Nice work, fellas.
Nintendo is usually the industry leader when it comes to innovative ideas and new tech, but has lagged sadly behind when it comes to online functionality. The Nintendo Wii, frankly, was never designed as a multifunctional device in the way that the PS3 and Xbox 360 were, and the console has fallen by the wayside when it comes to non-gaming activities.
Despite the fact that the Wii is on the way out, Nintendo is still working to bring it up to speed with current console competitors. And today they’ve taken another step in the right direction by adding Hulu Plus support to the device. As of this morning, the Hulu Plus channel is officially available for download.
You’ll need to pay the $7.99/mo subscription fee for the service, of course, and have your Wii connected to some sort of internet. If you can meet those requirements, you’ll be watching new episodes of House and whatever else you kids watch in no time.
Nintendo appears ready to address concerns over its multimedia failings with a full-on app store for the Wii U, but time will tell if it’s enough to drive gamers towards the Wii U and away from existing platforms during the console’s short head start this fall.
What do you think? Can Nintendo find a way to match the PS3 and Xbox 360’s robust multimedia functionality?

CEO Mark Pincus disagrees with allegations of concept copying, instead preferring the term “evolution.”
Last week, we talked a bit about Zynga’s latest game, Dream Heights. More specifically, we talked about the fact that Dream Heights is a pretty blatant copy of 2011’s official iPhone Game of the Year, Tiny Tower. At least, that’s how Tiny Tower’s developer, NimbleBit, feels.
Zynga CEO Mark Pincus disagrees with NimbleBit’s assertions, and instead believes that Dream Heights is just the next evolutionary step in a long line of tower games. His response, issued in an internal memo, referenced games like SimTower and Yoot Tower as other games that laid the framework for Tiny Tower, which in turn served as the basis for Dream Heights.
For the sake of fairness, here’s a direct quote:
“With regard to Dream Heights and the tower genre, it’s important to note that this category has existed since 1994 with games like Sim Tower and was more recently popularized in China with Tower of Babel in 2009 which achieved 15 million DAUs. On iOS there has been Yoot Tower, Tower Up, Tower Town, Tower Blocks and Tiny Tower. Just as our games, mechanics and social innovations have inspired and accelerated the game industry, its 30 year body of work has inspired us too.”
Of course, SimTower and Tiny Tower are very different games, a point made by NimbleBit’s Ian Marsh in the company’s rebuttal:
“It is a smart idea for Mark Pincus and Zynga to try and lump all games with the name Tower together as an actual genre whose games borrow from each other. Unfortunately sharing a name or setting does not a genre make. The games Pincus mentions couldn't be more different.”
He continued:
“If you take a quick look before "pulling the lens back" as Pincus suggests, you'll find an innumerable number of details in the game that were painstakingly crafted to be identical to Tiny Tower. These are core gameplay mechanics and rules, not similar settings or themes that games in the same genre might share.”
Pincus also took time to address allegations by yet another developer, Buffalo Studios, that the company had ripped off their design for Bingo Blitz to make the upcoming Zynga Bingo. Pincus wrote a missive similar to the original NimbleBit post, complete with picture-by-picture comparisons of how Buffalo actually ripped off Poker Blitz, an earlier Zynga title.
The whole thing is devolving into a running joke where one company says the other copied, and the accused company goes farther back in the books to claim the same about the accuser. One thing’s for sure, Zynga obviously doesn’t feel like what it is doing is wrong.
What do you think? Where is the line between being inspired by someone’s work, and copying it?
Also, you should absolutely read the full interview at GamesBeat.

Everything the PS3 version was, and more.
We talked a few weeks ago about Mortal Kombat making its way to Vita, but we didn’t have much in the way of details. Thanks to IGN, however, we are now able to delve a little more deeply into what exactly Vita owners can expect from this return to the bloody tournament.
Mortal Kombat on the Vita is based on 2011’s PS3 reboot of the franchise, and will contain all four of the DLC characters as well as Kratos. The Vita version will also contain all DLC outfits and fatalities. The game will play much in the same way as the PS3 version, with a couple of Vita-specific tweaks. For one, you can tap the special meter to instantly unleash a special attack, or use the screen to perform fatalities in lieu of the touchpad. In some of the game’s 150 new missions, you may find yourself swiping the screen to wipe away blood or knocking missiles down with a tap.
The game also includes a few new maps that don’t address the Vita controls – they were developed for the console version but weren’t polished in time for release. Overall, this version of Mortal Kombat is essentially a GOTY repackaging of 2011’s title, with more features, more characters and more levels.
Are you stoked on Vita Mortal Kombat?

The Australian government is finally addressing major problems in its game rating system.
We’ve talked previously about the massive problems with the way Australia’s government rates games. Because the country has no “Mature” equivalent rating, all games must be appropriate for teens in order to hit retail shelves. This limitation has caused some games to either be modified for the Aussie market, or made unavailable to Aussie players.
The Australian government is aware of the problem, and recently recommended a full review of their ratings system be administered to figure out how to best move forward. While the results from that review are still pending, the new Federal Minister for Home Affairs doesn’t seem intent on waiting around. Jason Clare, who now serves in the Minister position, confirmed via interview that a bill designed to establish a mature-equivalent rating would be introduced to parliament sometime next month. The new rating, known as R18+, will help developers bring violent and otherwise graphic content to Australian shores.
After the bill is introduced, it will have to pass first in the Lower House, then in the Senate. There’s no guarantee of passage, but even having a bill on the docket is farther than the Aussie government has managed to get in a long time.
Here’s hoping the bill goes through and our Australian friends can stop worrying about whether particular games will make it to their stores. Look for more updates in February, once the bill hits a vote.

Despite claiming the contrary just a couple of weeks ago, the Entertainment Software Association has officially backed off both SOPA and PIPA.
SOPA/PIPA fallout continues to roll across the web, with every day seemingly bringing a new renouncement from a former supporter. Today’s news, however, is the biggest yet – the Entertainment Software Association (ESA), which represents industry bigwigs like Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft, has officially reversed its position on the controversial legislation.
In a statement issued early this morning, the ESA noted that while it is still important to find ways to protect the intellectual property of its members, it was swayed by concerns over the “unintended consequences” presented by the current drafts of SOPA and PIPA. The ESA was, by far, one of the most powerful lobbying organizations that stood in favor of the bills; their retreat, though late, marks a big win for both the gaming community and SOPA/PIPA opponents in general.
As we mentioned last week, SOPA and PIPA have both been postponed – for now. Congress and organizations like the ESA are still looking for ways to control piracy, though now they adamant about finding a solution that addresses both the concerns of the entertainment industry and the worries of web users.
There is still time to make your voice heard on the issue, if you’re so inclined. You can do so here:

But if you’re a PS Plus subscriber, you can play the beta right now!
Starhawk, the upcoming PS3-exclusive, has an official release date. The game, which is in many ways a successor to Warhawk, will officially be hitting store shelves on May 8, 2012. But that’s not all! If you happen to be one of the many PS Plus subscribers, you can access the game right this very second via a public beta. Assuming, of course, that you’re not trapped at work.
If you’re not a PS Plus subscriber, you still have a couple of opportunities for accessing the game before release. Purchasers of Uncharted 3 will earn access on January 31, while regular PSN accounts can jump in February 21. Finally, GameStop and IGN will be hosting beta code giveaways – GameStop’s is scheduled for February 7, while IGN’s is set for February 14 (Valentine’s!).
Here’s what you can expect to see in the beta, straight from the PlayStation blog:
Classic Arcade Flight-Mode: Private Beta players asked for it and we’re happy to include the classic arcade flight from Warhawk.
Host Migration: When the host leaves the game, the hosting duties transfer to another player and gameplay will continue, provided the option is checked.
Language Support: European and Japanese languages are included. Korea, China, Latin America and Brazil will be in English…but these will include the appropriate languages for the full game.
Skills: Players will be able to collect unique Skills to use in gameplay based on their performance. Playstation Network Friend Integration: Friends status, messages, and friend requests.
Bug Fixes: Lots and lots of bugs have been addressed.
Are you going to try to get in on the Starhawk beta, or will you wait for release?

It’s a day of denials as THQ refutes stories that their 2014 lineup has been called off.
Over the weekend, news broke that THQ was in dire financial straits. So dire, in fact, that the company was planning on dumping its 2014 releases and opening itself up for a bailout buyout. The story came loose as the result of tweets sent by Kevin Dent of the IGDA, who claimed some sort of insider knowledge on the subject.
Early this morning, however, THQ issued a strong denial, noting that there have been no changes to its 2014 lineup, and that the company is merely “strategically addressing the most attractive markets.” The company also noted that Saints Row: The Third, released late in 2011, was a smashing success that put the publisher in fifth place for 2011 sales.
Rumors have been swirling for a while now that THQ’s MMO, Dark Millennium Online, is on the auction block. THQ also denied that they were attempting to sell the game, noting that they have made no official plans regarding the title. THQ, by all means, had a rough 2011, firing the uDraw team and closing down several studios including Kaos and Digital Warrington.
We’ll just have to wait and see how the story plays out. Even if THQ has canceled its lineup and is looking for a buyout, the company certainly isn’t going to sabotage its potential value by admitting it to the press.
What do you think is going on over at THQ?

Reports of game.co.uk being compromised appear to have been greatly exaggerated.
Early this morning, Softpedia posted an update alerting gamers to the fact that the Game Group website, located at game.co.uk, appeared to have been compromised. The report stemmed from a Pastebin post, which purportedly contained the email addresses and passwords of over 200 Game Group users. Site visitors were warned to change their passwords to be safe.
Game Group has responded to the alleged security breach by claiming that the information in question didn’t come from their website, and that none of the posted email addresses are those of their users. They went on to say that they (duh) take security very seriously, and that after looking into the Pastebin post, they can confidently claim that no user information has been compromised.
The company assured customers that their personal and payment information was safe, and invited anyone with questions to contact their customer service department. So, it looks like your Game Group information may be secure after all. However, you may want to change your password just in case – this wouldn’t be the first time a company has denied a very real security breach.
Do you think the hack is fake, or is it more likely that the company is trying to cover its tracks?

Lag problems in Skyrim have made the game nearly unplayable, but Bethesda has a solution – two months after launch.
Skyrim launched on November 11, 2011, and since then has been the subject of plenty of praise. Some call it game of the year, some call it game of the decade and others just call it a good game, but one group of players isn’t really feeling the praise – PS3 owners. Thanks to an issue with the way the PS3 stores game data and a lack of foresight on the part of developers, many people playing Skyrim on the Sony system have experienced game-breaking lag.
The issue has been in the gaming press for the last couple of months, with Bethesda constantly noting that they’re trying to get it fixed. The first few patches for Skyrim came and went without a PS3 fix, and players are still running into the very same issue they had on launch day.
Now, two months after the game hit shelves, Bethesda thinks they may have a solution. Skyrim update 1.4, set to go live sometime this month, should address the lag issue PS3 owners have been complaining about. The patch is currently awaiting certification from Sony, but will be live as soon as possible.
It’s nice that Bethesda finally fixed the problem, but it certainly seems like they could have acted more quickly. What do you think?

Sony’s chief exec Kaz Hirai has some interesting figures for CES attendees.
CES is happening right now, though it’s a touch too early in the show for any colossally important announcements. However, we are getting little tidbits of information as the show rolls along, one of which addresses the current situation of the PlayStation Vita. Turns out, it’s probably going to be okay (surprise!)
Sony chief Kaz Hirai took the stage at Sony Computer Entertainment’s media briefing yesterday and shared some of the more important Vita figures with the press. The Vita has moved over 500,000 units since its Japanese release on December 17 – lower than expectations but still a relatively strong showing from a brand new and unproven console. It’s worth noting that these numbers represent sold Vita units, not merely shipped ones.
Many in the gaming media have rushed to question the future of Vita due to its shrinking weekly sales, but the Vita still hasn’t been released on a global scale and some of the most high profile launch titles for the system are more appealing to western gamers than those in Japan. Depending on Sony’s strategy, the Vita could still have plenty of fight – remember, it wasn’t until the 3DS’s price drop that the handheld really started to move.
We’ll keep you posted as more details from CES leak out; in the meantime, what do you think will eventually happen with Vita? Can it topple Nintendo’s hold on the handheld market?

at the wrong time. I recently read an interview with the man himself on GameRanx and the guy has a lot of deep-seeded
personal issues and it looks like now those issues are more public than ever. Whilst the interview was meant to be revealing
and honest, it seems Paul has been anything but, as his actions have taken the world by storm, yet again, as he holds the
twitter and main website hostage.
Paul was let go from the company and has since been replaced with Moisés Chiullan. Chiullan is slowly picking up the peces
from N-Control's PR Nightmare and has gone into damage control including a complete corporate disowning of Christoforo and
his efforts, including a wonderful quote ending with the fact there "isn't a bus big enough for me to throw Paul Christoforo
under"
Chiullan then went to Twitter to answer people's questions about the current situation. Chiullan then followed it up by
setting up a Reddit AMA to directly respond to all the big questions and revealed that Mr. Christoforo isn't finished making
the guys at N-Control a living hell. See, as it turns out, the man is trying to commit extortion and gain a little profit
from the ordeal.
Chiullan tweeted out that Christoforo was holding N-Control's email, Twitter and Facebook accounts hostage. One of the first
questions asked in the AMA was how this could happen. Chiullan's answer was that he has "been trying to get him to give up
the access." Chiullan insists that he's been asking nicely for a couple of days but "the gloves are off now."
Paul told Chiullan via phone that "Eight months ago, I locked down all this stuff so they wouldn't be able to fuck with me.
If they don't give me what I want, it's war." Paul doesn't really want money but demands include a contract written on his
terms and substantial compensation, both immediate and for as long term, basically tll the company implodes due to Paul being
an unstable coworker. It's almost as though he's trying to pull a Fight Club and going about it in the worst way possible.
Paul even, flaunted the PR debacle he created as proof that he "made the company a success", citing all the media and public
attention as the "best thing that ever happened to Avenger".
Paul didn't count on the fact that Chiullan had anticipated all of these comments and issues and has been working on computer
hardware and web tech since I was 14. Chiullan did have control over the AvengerController.com domain. It was transferred
away from its original account, which Paul had complete control of. Because of how GoDaddy works, that old account retained
all of the email addresses and their master control settings (forwarding and so on) and N-Control not supporting SOPA, left
the GoDaddy account and Paul in the dust. Paul even continued to respond to customer emails from his personal GMail account
and lied to Moisés repeatedly about that fact.
Chiullan played it nice, and Paul played it stupid, acting like he didn't have full access to the master account, blaming his
"Indian outsourced tech team" being on vacation. Chiullan gave Paul an ultimatum: Paul was given two days to give over N-
Control's digital property.
Moisés closed the statement saying "He finally leveled with me tonight that he knew I wasn't that stupid and that he was
lying about his access to all these accounts. That's when he issued the above-mentioned threat. He reiterated that he had the
hosting, email, and everything on lockdown," which is simply not true.
The entire saga has played out for the entire world to see and everyone is far ahead Paul in the most darkest ways possible.
Where he will go, nobody knows but sadly, I wouldn't rule out suicide for the most feeblest of hearts.

MMO Rift Database hacked
Looks like the hacking problems persist into Christmas
The MMORPG Rift has been going swimmingly as of late for the creators Trion Worlds. The game boosts a healthy subscription but sad news came over the wire yesterday as their database was hacked.
The account database has possibly compromising information including user names, passwords, dates of birth, email addresses, billing addresses and plenty of Credit Card information to boot.
The company said in a statement that "there is no evidence that...full credit card information was accessed or compromised," which is hopefully good and not just to calm users.
Trion Worlds has said that they've already taken further actions to "strengthen [their] system" and continue with "external security experts" to research "the exctend of the unauthorised access."
Users will need to change their passwords and security questions and answers the next time they log into the game or Trion Worlds site. They've also stated that people who use similar information (user names, financial information, etc.) should watch their statements and activity carefully, just in case.
I always feel that game companies give wise advice in times of crisis, but I really want something new from the games industry, almost Bush-like in their response, like "We will find the perpetrators, whoever they are, find what they took and find their mumma's and tell them to spank their sons"

Despite the Wii’s lack of a patching mechanism, Nintendo has come up with a way to solve the game-breaking bug that’s leaving some Zelda players stranded mid-story.
We talked a bit about the Skyward Sword bug last week. If this is the first you’ve heard of it, here’s what’s been going on: completing certain events in the game may cause it to accidentally lock off the rest of the story, forcing you to start the whole thing over. Last week it was revealed that Nintendo is accepting Wii consoles for repair in Japan, but it looks like the games developer has actually come up with a method for patching their title.
In Japan, Nintendo has just added a channel to the Wii home screen titled the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Restoration Channel. The entire goal of this new channel is fixing the bug and making your save playable again, and reports indicate that it’s been working.
Unfortunately, for some users, the special restoration channel only repairs files on the main Wii memory. Players that saved their Skyward Sword data to an SD card will still have to send the card in for restoration, unless Nintendo finds some way to update the patch channel.
There’s still no word on how Nintendo is going to address this issue in the west, but if the restoration channel proves successful, it’s very likely it will be hitting a Wii near you very soon. Not too shabby for a company that up until now had no way to update or patch a game.
Let’s just hope they learn from this mistake and build the Wii U with these types of issues in mind.

The Aussie ratings board strikes again, blocking the game from release in Australia due to being unsuitable for minors.
Oh, Australia. Your ratings board, as we have discussed previously, is sort of a mess. Games and movies are rated on completely different scales, which results in some very weird happenings. One problem with the Aussie ratings system is that there’s no classification for games that are intended only for adults, meaning that Mature-type games can effectively be blocked from release in the country.
This is exactly what happened to Syndicate, which according to the ratings board was refused classification due to intense blood and gore. Because there’s no “grown-ups only,” rating in Australia, the game will not see an Aussie release unless it’s eventually accepted under the current classification system – despite the fact that the Aussie government is currently working on an R18+ rating.
The ratings board has banned a couple of high profile games over the last few years, most notably 2011’s Mortal Kombat and Fallout 3 (later accepted with edits). Other games, such as The Witcher 2, have come painfully close, requiring in-game changes to pass muster. There’s no word on whether EA will fight the decision or attempt to edit their game, but for now it looks like Aussie players may have to do without Syndicate.
What do you folks think of Australia’s games rating system? Dumb? Effective? Both?

Witcher 2 wants to settle with pirates
So I got the game, didn't pay for the game and now you want me to pay 900 pounds?
I wrote earlier this month about how the guys over at CD Projekt were unhappy but a bit understanding about this whole pirate business.
Lawyers acting on behalf of Polish developer CD Projekt Red are demanding cash settlements from alleged pirates of The Witcher 2.
The story initially broke last week, when TorrentFreak published a report claiming that "thousands" of German BitTorrent users were asked to pay €911.80 or face further legal action.
The article also suggests that, by ignoring the factors like "Wi-fi piggybacking" or multiple parties using a single IP address, CD Projekt's lawyers are, "wrongfully accusing people who have never even heard of the game."
Yesterday, CD Projekt issued a statement to the press explaining that its decision not to include DRM in its products should not be confused for, "giving a green light to piracy."
"We will never approve of [piracy], since it doesn't only affect us but has a negative impact on the whole game industry."
"We've seen some of the concern online about our efforts to thwart piracy, and we can assure you that we only take legal actions against users who we are 100 per cent sure have downloaded our game illegally."
In a recent interview with PC Gamer, CD Projekt co-founder Marcin Iwinski estimated that 4.5 million copies of The Witcher 2 had been illegally downloaded since the game launched earlier this year.
