Sniper Elite V2 offers a pre-order bonus that lets you do just that.
In most games and films, tinkering with history is strictly prohibited. Sure, you’ve killed mountains of Nazi soldiers in generic first-person shooters, but the overall narrative of the war still rolled on to its inevitable conclusion. Rebellion is offering you a chance to step outside of the time lock and alter the path of history, assuming, of course, you pre-order its upcoming Sniper Elite V2.
If you swing by your local game store and pre-order Sniper Elite V2 before March 4, you’ll be given free access to the Kill Hitler DLC Pack. The pack includes two new weapons and, more importantly, the opportunity to shoot Hitler in his tiny-mustachioed face.
Here’s the description of the mission, straight from Rebellion:
You have one chance to change history – intel has been received that Hitler is returning from Berchtesgaden to Berlin via his personal train. Players must intercept the train as it waits at the station and take down the Fuhrer as he hastily makes way for the station on foot. There is only a single opportunity for players to do what so many wish had been done – take out the leader of the Third Reich.
If you weren’t planning on picking up Sniper Elite, this DLC bonus probably won’t sell you a copy of the game. But if you were, this seems like plenty of motivation to pre-order.
Should games be more liberal with real-life timelines?

Sales numbers show a strong start, but what is the real measure of Vita’s performance?
Last week, I wrote a PoV article titled “Vita will Fail.” In that article, I used the device’s performance in Japan and the lackluster reviews of its launch titles to draw the conclusion that the device would not be able to overtake its primary competitor, the Nintendo DS.
The comment war that erupted was one-part insults, one-part thoughtful commentary, and one-part argument over why exactly the Vita needs to beat the 3DS in the first place. This third thread in the conversation is intriguing to me, as I had approached the situation strictly from a Vita vs. 3DS perspective.
Today, Sony announced that the Vita has officially sold 1.2 million units since launching in December. Breaking that figure apart, the device moved around 579,000 before global launch, and an additional 600,000 since last week. This number is apparently higher than Sony’s internal expectations, so by all accounts we can consider the first week of global launch a success.
Which brings me to the question I’d like to pose in this week’s Sound Off: How do you define success for the PS Vita? Does it need to topple the 3DS?
Let us know in the comments.

BT Games accidentally a game announcement.
Hey, remember the God of War series? You know, the one that’s made a bazillion dollars but hasn’t been heard from in a while? Well, it turns out that there’s a new God of War coming your way, though you wouldn’t know it by talking to Sony.
Despite the company’s best efforts to keep the title under wraps, everyone pretty much knows that God of War 4 is happening. First, we had an accidental slip of the resume from the composer that worked on the game; now we have BT Games, a South African games store, taking pre-orders for the game despite the fact that it hasn’t been confirmed to exist.
Oops! Apparently, this isn’t the first time BT Games has dropped the bomb on an unannounced games. Anyway, it’s not like the existence of God of War 4 is some sort of huge mystery—anyone that knows the industry would guess that the thing is coming out sooner or later. Still, it’s a pretty big slip-up on the part of the retailer, especially after the Black Ops 2 debacle that unfolded last week.
What do you think about a new God of War?

Sony’s savior is nothing more than PSP: the sequel.
Warning: This article contains – gasp! – my opinion. If your delicate sensibilities can’t grasp reading something counter to your own beliefs, perhaps you should mosey along to something you’ll find easier to digest. Here’s a suggestion.
Read the comments on this site, and you’ll see that I’m a bona fide Sony hater. Curiously enough, I’m also an Xbox, Android and Nintendo hater, depending on the comments you read. Basically, if you ask the readers of this site, I hate everything.
Reader contention aside, it is true that I’ve never been a fan of the Sony brand. This is the result of several factors: the “quantity over quality” approach they’ve always taken towards game development, their absurd comments about the superiority of their consoles despite sales data saying otherwise, and their documented tendency to screw their playerbase.
I believe the Sony Vita will fail. Not on the scale of the Virtual Boy or Jaguar, but in the sense that it will not overtake the Nintendo 3DS, and will not extend Sony’s grasp on the handheld market far beyond what the PSP already provided. This belief comes not from my admitted distaste for Sony, but from the tepid response the device has seen since Japanese launch, the lukewarm reviews offered to the system’s launch lineup, and the unfolding clusterfucks related to the new system that indicate Sony hasn’t learned how to make a system that’s easy to use and fun to own.
Put simply, the PS Vita is too little, too late. And no matter how you feel about Sony, it’s not going to change this simple fact: Nintendo remains the king of the handheld kingdom for the foreseeable future.
Sorry Sony fanboys; it looks like you’re out of luck.

Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the scan
Once the scan is complete, you’ll be redirected to a site at which you can officially put yourself in the running for Guild Wars 2 beta contention. At the time of this writing, there were about two hours left for registration. If you make it into the beta, be sure to give me a wave. Or fireball.

The company is waiting for “the right” handheld. Hint: Vita isn’t it.
Naughty Dog, the company behind Uncharted, Crash Bandicoot and the upcoming, ridiculously over-hyped The Last of Us, is probably one of the most well-respected developers in the industry at the moment. The Uncharted series has received mountains of praise, and has served as one of the most purchase-motivating PlayStation exclusives since the days of Final Fantasy.
Now that the PlayStation Vita is officially on shelves (well, almost), people want to know who will be making games for the device, and who won’t. As of this week, you can file Naughty Dog under the “won’t” category. Community manager Arne Meyer has confirmed that the company has no Vita titles in the works, and won’t be entering the portable market until “the right handheld” comes along.
Meyer noted that console development is really Naughty Dog’s wheelhouse, playing to their strengths in pushing the limits of both hardware and the company’s game engines. He also stated that he couldn’t rule out a Vita game completely, but that at the moment, there are no plans for Naughty Dog to bring a game to the system.
Uncharted: Golden Abyss is expected to be one of the biggest Vita launch titles at release, but it was developed by Sony Bend borrowing the license from Naughty Dog.
Naughty Dog is one of Sony’s biggest and most successful developers. Seeing them out of the race on the Vita is certainly strange, especially when you consider that Sony just announced that all of its studios were working on something Vita-related.
Do you think more developers will follow Naughty Dog in passing on Vita development?

EA notes that vitriol from players regarding its unnecessary Origin software is on the decline, and asks for a two-year window to make the service useful.
Origin is a piece of shit. What’s worse, it’s an unnecessary piece of shit. What Origin stumbles through, Steam already had mastered. And the only reason Origin even exists at this point is EA stripping its games from a far superior digital distribution platform and forcing a proprietary service down everyone’s throats. It’s nothing less than a digital coup, and an ugly one at that.
Origin has, naturally, seen its fair share of hate. Most of this hate stems from feelings like those mentioned above, with a bit left over for the terrible customer service offered by the platform. However, EA sees a few rays of light poking through the hate clouds. Chief operating officer Peter Moore, who is largely responsible for the existence of Origin, believes that the software is just a couple of years away from being truly wonderful.
Moore stated that EA is looking for ways to make Origin more social and more interactive, as opposed to just a pipeline for the company to shovel games at players (at exorbitant prices). He also noted that criticism of the platform has mostly died down, and that gamers are learning to embrace Origin’s special brand of online functionality. Hey, when you make something mandatory, how can people not learn to use it?
His comments are actually sort of hilarious—Moore claims that the healthiest decision for the industry is providing players with a way to “shop around” on various services, while his company simultaneously pulls all of its games off competitor’s platforms. Nice one, EA. Regardless  of the hypocrisy, Moore does make a smart point when he says the service needs a couple of years; there’s no telling whether Origin will be better or worse in 2014.
What do you think of Origin? Do you see it as one more gaming tool on your PC, or an unwanted and forced intrusion by a greedy company?

EA plans to include DLC download codes with series two of the Mass Effect action figure lineup.
Do you like Mass Effect? Do you like DLC? What about action figures? If you said yes to all three questions, then man have we got a deal for you. It looks like EA, the publisher behind Bioware’s upcoming space-RPG Mass Effect 3, has an interesting plan for delivering DLC to gamers: toys.
According to information posted by the Big Bad Toy Store, series two of the Mass Effect action figure series will come packaged with special codes, valid for special “in-game bonus content.” Every figure apparently comes with its own bit of DLC, so it’s safe to assume the updates are limited to weapons, armor and other small accessories.
Here’s a list of the figures coming in series two:
Miranda
Mordin
Garrus
Legion
There’s no information available on whether you’ll have to buy the toys to get this DLC, or if it will be made available to regular players without a penchant for plastic. In the meantime, it does seem to be a cool way to sell DLC – who wouldn’t want a mini Miranda on their desk?
Would you buy toys to access DLC?

A group of BF3 cheaters has a bone to pick with Punkbuster, and they’re doing it at the expense of regular joes.
The beating heart of Battlefield 3 is its intense online multiplayer. And whenever you have online multiplayer in a game, you have to find a way to protect it from cheaters. On PC versions of the game, this function is performed by software known as Punkbuster.
Punkbuster is an automated program that analyzes every player on a particular server and looks for known cheats and other exploits. If it catches someone in the act, they are immediately banned from EA’s Battlelog service. According to Kotaku, some of these cheaters are unhappy with the way Punkbuster affects their game, and have elected to take their frustrations out on the regular BF3 populace.
It seems that somehow, these players have managed to compromise Punkbuster on certain servers, and are using the service to ban innocent players. The group claims to have dumped over 150 players to date, and the official BF3 forums are awash in complaints of unwarranted bans. Essentially, this small selection of players has chosen to protest Punkbuster by using it against non-cheating individuals.
Posting to a bots and exploits forum, one user had this to say about Punkbuster:
“We are bringing back the unerring of punkbuster back for a 3rd season. We have selected ggc-stream as the target since they have the most streaming bf3 servers and makes it very easy to add fake bans. In 2011 we hit them with a mass ban wave and now were are banning real players from battlelog while ggc-stream is totally unaware. We have framed 150+ bf3 players alone.”
This story is still developing, and there’s been no official word from either DICE or Punkbuster on what may be going on, so the news should be taken with a grain of salt. Look for future updates as information is made available.
What do you think of Punkbuster?

Nintendo 3DS titles score the top three slots for 2011 sales.
Japan’s gaming market is very, very different from the one here in the west. Japanese gamers are big fans of portable titles, and they’re not really that into the AAA FPS blockbusters that seem to do so well in the U.S. and in Europe. With that in mind, the 2011 software sales tallies for Japan don’t really come as much of a surprise.
Mario Kart 7 landed firmly in first place, followed by Super Mario 3D Land. In fact, of the top ten games, five were exclusively available on a Nintendo console. The rest of the list belongs to the PlayStation 3, with not one Xbox 360 title breaking into the top ten.
Here’s the full list, courtesy of Edge:
01. Mario Kart 7 (Nintendo, 3DS)
02. Super Mario 3D Land (Nintendo, 3DS)
03. Monster Hunter Tri G (Capcom, 3DS)
04. Final Fantasy Type-0 (Square Enix, PSP)
05. Final Fantasy XIII-2 (Square Enix, PS3)
06. Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (Capcom, PSP)
07. Minna No Rhythm Tengoku (Nintendo, Wii)
08. Tales Of Xillia (Namco Bandai, PS3)
09. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 Professional (DS)
10. Wii Sports Resort (Nintendo, Wii)
What’s really amazing about Mario Kart topping the charts for the year is that the game didn’t hit shelves until December 1. That means that every one of the 1.16 million units sold moved in just a rough 30-day period. Not too shabby there, Nintendo. Also interesting is Final Fantasy XIII-2’s presence on the list, despite the fact that the game opened relatively weak and many news outlets lamented it as a failure.
So what do these numbers tell us about the western market? Nothing at all, of course!

Gamer scores 144 kills and 4 deaths in one MW3 match, and in the process demonstrates one of the game’s biggest problems.
Look, it’s 2012. Spawn trapping – the act of locking an opposing team into one spawn area and mercilessly camping them – simply shouldn’t be possible in games anymore. Developers, by now, should know how to circumvent this problem. However, the issue seems to have slipped the mind of devs over at Infinity Ward, as evidenced by this video:
In the clip, one MW3 player, with the help of his team, manages to summon a M.O.A.B. in just 48 seconds by peeking over a wall into the enemy spawn and absolutely wrecking the other team as they respawn helplessly. It’s a cheap tactic from any point of view, but the real amazing thing is that it’s even possible in a game that supposed to be one of the best shooters ever made.
This problem is rampant in certain MW3 game modes, and the developers are going to need to find some way to repair it if they want to keep the community happy and engaged. The players in the video aren’t necessarily cheating, so the only recourse is to prevent the problem from happening in the first place.
What do you think should be done to stop matches like this from taking place?

We’re seeing quite a few top ten lists, but there’s one problem  - we’ve played most of these games before.
2011 is over and every gaming publication on earth is counting down through the best games of the year. Most have posted some sort of top ten list detailed what they believed to be the strongest titles of the year, and for the most part the lists make sense – Portal 2, Deus Ex: Human Revolution , Skyward Sword, etc.
I just have one problem – nearly all of these games are sequels or continuations of a franchise. In a year of blockbuster sales and enormous launch events, we’ve been treated to very little in the way of original titles. So, here’s what I want to know, QJ readers:
What ORIGINAL title do you believe was the best of the year?
For reference, here are some of the non-sequel games that launched in 2011:
Bastion
L.A. Noire
Magicka
Jetpack Joyride
From Dust
Sanctum
Frozen Synapse
Terraria
The Binding of Isaac
You’ll note that most of the originality in the industry is coming from the indie circuit. Big developers simply aren’t taking risks on new properties. Anyway, what’s your pick for best original game 2011?

Square Enix drops details on FFXIV’s billing structure so players know what to expect as the game shifts off the F2P mechanic.
Final Fantasy XIV has officially reached the end of its forced free beta, and Square Enix seems to think they’ve finally hit a point where people will be willing to pay to play. They announced the shift back to a regular subscription model about a month ago – now they’re ready to move forward with the change.
Here’s what that means for current players: As of January 5th, your FFXIV account will be suspended until you opt back into the billing system. Monthly fees will be set at $9.99 until the release of FFXIV 2.0, the updated version of the MMO, at which point they’ll bump up to $12.99. You’ll also need to pay $3.00 per extra character on your account – the basic subscription covers only one main character.
If you play FFXIV, you may want to check out their official site to get a bearing on what to expect. Then again, it’s pretty basic MMO stuff. You pay money; you get to play the game. The real question is whether players will be willing to shift from F2P back to a subscription model.
Do you think players will pay for FFXIV, or did the game already miss its chance?

Want to know what games are hitting shelves with the Vita when it drops here in the U.S.? Check out our list!
Today has been an interesting day for Vita news. First, we got an idea of how expensive the device’s memory cards were actually going to be (read: not very). Now, we have a confirmed and official list of every game that will be available at launch. And the list is pretty long, especially when compared to some other launches.
Some of the games are likely not going to be great, but the presence of Uncharted and Hot Shots Golf are enough to ensure Sony sells at least a few thousand devices. And hey, who doesn’t love Katamari?
Here’s your launch list:
SCEA Launch Day Titles
Escape Plan (PSN Only)
Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational
Hustle Kings (PSN Only)
Little Deviants
ModNation Racers: Road Trip
Super StarDust Delta (PSN only)
UNCHARTED: Golden Abyss

Jedi and Sith storm Times Square and create an incredible moments for tourists and fans of the series. Also, publicity.
Flash mobs seem to be an increasingly popular method to get the attention of an ever-distracted populace. We’ve seen mobile phone companies and other businesses use dancing flash mobs for positive press, and who doesn’t love watching people dance their hearts out? Which is why it’s not that surprising that EA would put together a Star Wars flash mob to celebrate the launch of Star Wars: The Old Republic.
What is surprising, however, is what the mob actually did. Namely, nothing:
Everyone just stands in place, giving bystanders the opportunity to snap pictures and place themselves in the battle. It looks really, really cool, so props to EA for putting something this awesome together.
It’s not as awesome as Tanksis, but it’s still pretty rad. In the meantime, however, EA is still struggling to keep up with demand in the actual game – players are facing long queues on most servers.
What do you think of Old Republic and its advertising blitz?

If you received an email from the massive games retailer noting the cancellation of Team ICO’s latest project, you can go ahead and disregard it.
Despite the departure of one of its top devs, Team ICO is still continuing development on The Last Guardian. In fact, when the dev (Fumito Ueda) left, he confirmed that he would be finishing the game, just in a more freelance capacity. GameStop doesn’t seem to have gotten the memo, and earlier this week removed the game from their website and sent emails to gamers letting them know the game had been canceled.
Sony didn’t take too kindly to GameStop canceling a game on their behalf, and quickly issued a statement confirming that the game was still in development. GameStop seems to have gotten THAT message, though, and they’ve since issued an apology (to Kotaku, of all places) outlining that, no, the game hasn’t been canceled but yes, your pre-orders have been.
The game will be made available for pre-order again once a concrete launch date is established. In the meantime, it looks like this is just a simple misunderstanding on the part of GameStop – or Sony desperately trying to save hype for a game that may turn into vaporware.
What do you think?

The new “Metro” dashboard update is causing a few problems for streaming video, problems Microsoft apparently knew about before launch.
Software launches are always hit and miss. Some features end up working just as planned, and others end up breaking or completely disabling your system. Win some, lose some. However, in most cases, the bad things that come with a software update are unexpected problems a developer must race to fix – not well known bugs that have been reported time and time again by your beta community.
This is exactly the case when it comes to the new Microsoft Xbox dashboard. The latest update, titled “Metro,” added all sorts of interesting features to the Xbox dash. It also, however, seems to have had a negative impact on the way videos appear on your screen. While not hugely different from the original dashboard video playback system, whatever Metro uses to show video is washing out colors and making videos look a little less vibrant.
The issue was reported several times by the beta testing community that had early access to the Metro dashboard, and Microsoft’s response was apparently, “Yeah, we’ll get right on that.” The video playback issue is especially strange when you consider that Metro is billed as the Xbox’s huge multimedia update, and it’s very annoying that they’d run a beta then ignore the feedback of their testers.
Overall, feedback for Metro has been mixed. Personally, I like some of it, and hate other parts. The Netflix update, for example, is pure garbage. But I like the revisions to the main screen; they make it easier for me to push through my most commonly used applications (read: Battlefield 3, Netflix).
Have you had any issues with Metro? What are your thoughts on the new dashboard?

Did you pre-order Star Wars: The Old Republic? You’ll want to check out EA’s early access information.
Gamers that choose to pre-order the upcoming Star Wars-themed MMORPG, Star Wars: The Old Republic, will have access to the game a few days before the rest of the gaming populace. This is old news. What’s not old news, however, is the specific information regarding how that early access will operate, and when it will begin. Thanks to EA, we now have a detailed overview of what early adopters can expect.
Here’s the deal: If you pre-order SWTOR and register the pre-order code on the official website for the game, you can land yourself in the game up to seven days before its official launch. The date of your early access is determined by when you register your code, as EA is performing a staggered rollout, meaning the sooner you register, the more time you’ll have. The staggered rollout is likely an EA plan to keep servers manageable at the first crush of launch, or it could just be incentive to pre-order sooner rather than later.
Access starts on December 13 - EA will send you an email letting you know when your early access has been activated. And remember, even if you’re one of the several thousands of people that had your pre-order canceled by Wal-Mart, as long as you register the pre-order code, you’ll still get your early access to the game.
Star Wars: The Old Republic is due December 20, and is expected to be a major force in the world of MMOs. Have you pre-ordered a copy, or are you waiting to see how the game goes for everyone else?

A survey send to Assassin’s Creed fans list some potential times and locations for a new AC game. Where would you want to go?
Sure, Assassin’s Creed  has nailed down free-running and sneaky stabbing, but one of the most interesting facets of the franchise has always been its interactions with history. While the game boasts plenty of mindless assassinating and exploring, there’s always a significant historical tone to each game, as well as cameos from some of the most famous names in our collective past.
We’ve explored renaissance Italy, hung out in Constantinople before it became Istanbul, and skulked around during the Third Crusade, but where are we going next? That’s just the question posed by a survey from Empire State Gamers, sent out to a bunch of Assassin’s Creed fans. The survey asks where gamers think the next game should take place and poses some interesting options.
Check them out:
• The violent conflicts of the Imperial Dynasties in Medieval China
• The advent of the mighty British Empire during Victorian England
• The culmination of the Pharaoh Reign in Ancient Egypt
• The invasion of the Americas by the Spanish Conquistadors
• The confrontation between British colonists and native Americans during The American Revolution
• The overthrow of the Tsar Empire by the Communists during the Russian Revolution
• The Warlord Battles in Feudal Japan
• The rise of Cesar’s Empire in Ancient Rome
Of all these locations, I think the Tsar Empire and British Empire sound like the most plausible options. Sure, Ancient Egypt would be fun, as would the American revolution, but there isn’t much room for free running in those areas and times. At least, not in the scale we’ve seen in previous games. Then again, Ubisoft can always fudge the architecture a bit, right?
Which option do you think is the most interesting?

The anticipated PS Vita game contains only three tracks and five cars. Weak.
A few lucky individuals in the Japanese gaming press had the chance to play the PlayStation Vita’s upcoming version of Ridge Racer, and while the reports paint the controls and graphics in a positive light, they also note that the game is pretty limited when it comes to content.
Based on the current version of the game, Vita’s Ridge Racer will ship with three tracks, all of which are remakes from previous Ridge Racer games, and only five different cars. CVG, reporting on the story, notes that there will probably be DLC content, but the in-box game seems alarmingly limited. You can run the courses backwards, but that hardly seems like a substitute for more on-disc content.
The game will be priced below normal Vita games, so that’s some consolation to Ridge Racer fans. Still, it’s not a great precedent for the future of games – slightly cheaper, but limited titles aimed at filling in the blanks with DLC. Most Vita games run around £50, but Ridge Racer will land at about £33 – not necessarily a huge enough difference to justify such a small title.
Also, the game apparently runs at only 30fps? Overall, it doesn’t sound like Ridge Racer is shaping up to be the exciting title some people thought – limited courses, limited cars, and limited frame rates mar what should be a great experience.
Would you buy a racing game with only three courses?

Most of the big stuff has come out already, but there are still plenty of new games to play in this week’s edition of “On Shelves.”
It looks like the crazy holiday release schedule is finally slowing down, with most of the major releases already on shelves and waiting to be picked up. But the games industry is an ever-moving beast, and there are still quite a few games scheduled for release in the upcoming week.
Who knows, some of them might even be good! But when an iPhone game is the biggest launch of the week, don’t expect any miracles.
Here’s your list of releases, organized in no way at all:
Infinity Blade II
iPhone, iPad
ESRB N/A
Epic Games
Heavy Fire: Afghanistan – The Chosen Few
PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, 3DS
ESRB Teen
Mastiff
Steel Armor – Blaze of War
PC
ESRB RP
Play Indie
Jaws: Ultimate Predator
Wii, 3DS
ESRB Teen
Majesco Studios
Small World Tunnels
PC
ESRB RP
Days of Wonder
Face Racers: Photo Finish
Nintendo 3DS
ESRB E
Majesco
Combat Arms: Zombies
iPhone
ESRB N/A
Nexon
That’s pretty much it for this week. There are a few other minor titles coming out, but honestly Infinity Blade II is the only thing on this list I had even heard of before today. GameSpot’s list is missing box art for 2/3s of the list.
Looks like this may be the break everyone needed for Skyrim!

Today is your last day to buy games at the old five-system share rate. New Game limits are in place when the service comes back online.
We discussed Sony’s recent decision to change the game sharing limit from five games to two a few weeks back, and (judging from the comments) people didn’t seem too happy about the new policy. Regardless of booming customer complaints, Sony is moving forward with the plan and will take PSN down from 8am to 10pm (PST) tomorrow to implement the update.
This means if you want to buy games that still fall under the old five-game limit, you need to buy them before the service goes down tomorrow morning.
Sony is calling the 14-hour downtime “routine maintenance,” but it certainly seems like a long time for their online service to be off-limits. I don’t own a PS3 so I’m unfamiliar with their maintenance routine – please let me know in the comments if this is something they do frequently.
During the downtime, you won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store, Account Management or create new accounts, and you won’t be able to access your account via the web. Here’s one strange thing though, Sony indicates in their official blog that “some users” may still be able to play online. Some?
There’s also a PS3 firmware update included in the maintenance, but details are scant. We’ll keep you posted as we get more information.
How do you feel about the new game sharing limits?
