The Legend of Dead Kel brings new foes and new lands—some of which you own.
Kingdoms of Amalur would best be described as a hack and slash RPG—the familiar questing, leveling and equipping mechanisms are present, but combat is fluid and fast-paced. Basically, the best of both worlds. And if you’ve hit a point where you’re out of fun stuff to do in Kingdoms of Amalur (doubtful), more content is coming your way.
The game’s upcoming DLC pack, titled The Legend of Dead Kel, brings new monsters to fight and increases the land mass of the game’s world by a whopping 15%. Included in this new land is Gravehal Keep, a personal estate owned by you, the player. The keep will contain a number of characters, each with quests, perks and everything you’d expect from a generic RPG NPC.
The Legend of Dead Kel will also include 18 new weapons, eight new armor sets and eight new shields. All in all, not too shabby in terms of DLC, especially when compared with some of the more anemic downloadable add-ons we’ve seen in recent months.
Are you looking forward to The Legend of Dead Kel? It comes out March 20.

A brand new trailer marks the launch of the SSX demo.
SSX is just one week away from launch, and EA is doing everything it can to push the game to the front of people’s minds. If there’s one thing the company does better than any other, it’s marketing. Anyway, to celebrate the SSX demo that launched on PSN and Xbox Live early this morning, EA has released an all-new trailer featuring some previously unseen gameplay elements.
But you don’t have to take my word for it:
The trailer offers a few tips for the Race It mode, which challenges you to score the fastest time down a particular track by finding clean lines and slamming big tricks for boost. You know, the usual SSX stuff. The video is worth watching if you have a few minutes to spare, since the tips offered are universal to the game.
SSX drops February 28.

EA is bringing America’s favorite dysfunctional family to your iOS device.
Simpsons games, as a rule, have been pretty hit-or-miss. The arcade game was an instant classic, but some of the side-scrollers that showed up on various consoles throughout the 90s were utter garbage. The franchise saw renewed game-related praise for 2003’s Hit and Run, but has been mostly dark since then.
Well, Simpsons fans, your long wait has come to an end: EA is prepping a brand new Simpsons iOS game, titled The Simpsons: Tapped Out. The game will utilize writers from the show, as well as all of the relevant voice talent. Tapped Out revolves around rebuilding Springfield after Homer accidentally destroys it in a nuclear explosion.
The game is slotted firmly in the free-to-play notch, with the initial download being free but microtransactions aplenty. You’ll be able to trade your real-life cash for in-game doughnuts, which I can only assume will be used to unlock new characters and gameplay elements. Simpsons games are always risky, but with the writers and actors onboard, this should at least turn out interesting for fans.
Look for Tapped Out to hit the iTunes Store sometime this spring. And for you Android users, watch for the game a few months after that. As usual.

You know, that Facebook store that no one knew existed.
Did you know that Facebook has storefronts where you can buy things from your favorite companies? Me neither. And, apparently, neither did the 3.5 million people that follow GameStop on the social networking site. Thanks to the total lack of interest, GameStop has officially shut down its Facebook store just six months after launch.
Apparently, Facebook shopping was supposed to be the next big thing in online retail. Some analysts thought that Facebook would turn into its very own shopping destination. However, it turns out that people don’t really feel like buying stuff when they’re hanging out with their friends. Not to mention that the entire effort was poorly marketed—most customers didn’t even realize that retailers even had a Facebook store.
GameStop isn’t alone in this disaster. Gap, J.C. Penny and Nordstrom have all open and then shut down Facebook stores in just the last 12 months. Overall, the experiment was a far cry from the Amazon and PayPal threat it was made out to be.
Did you ever make a purchase through GameStop Facebook? Did you even know that was a thing?

The company is waiting for “the right” handheld. Hint: Vita isn’t it.
Naughty Dog, the company behind Uncharted, Crash Bandicoot and the upcoming, ridiculously over-hyped The Last of Us, is probably one of the most well-respected developers in the industry at the moment. The Uncharted series has received mountains of praise, and has served as one of the most purchase-motivating PlayStation exclusives since the days of Final Fantasy.
Now that the PlayStation Vita is officially on shelves (well, almost), people want to know who will be making games for the device, and who won’t. As of this week, you can file Naughty Dog under the “won’t” category. Community manager Arne Meyer has confirmed that the company has no Vita titles in the works, and won’t be entering the portable market until “the right handheld” comes along.
Meyer noted that console development is really Naughty Dog’s wheelhouse, playing to their strengths in pushing the limits of both hardware and the company’s game engines. He also stated that he couldn’t rule out a Vita game completely, but that at the moment, there are no plans for Naughty Dog to bring a game to the system.
Uncharted: Golden Abyss is expected to be one of the biggest Vita launch titles at release, but it was developed by Sony Bend borrowing the license from Naughty Dog.
Naughty Dog is one of Sony’s biggest and most successful developers. Seeing them out of the race on the Vita is certainly strange, especially when you consider that Sony just announced that all of its studios were working on something Vita-related.
Do you think more developers will follow Naughty Dog in passing on Vita development?

SimLife 2012! SimLife 2012! Make it happen, guys.
Man, how did companies market games and make announcements before Twitter? EA PR rep Erik Reynolds dropped a minor bomb on his Twitter feed early this month, hinting at a big Maxis reveal at this year’s Game Developer Conference in San Francisco. He followed the tweet by pointing fans to the Game Changers Facebook page, where more information will supposedly follow over time.
Naturally, the internet is already freaking out over what Maxis could be up to. Most people seem to agree that the company will announce a brand new SimCity title, and since that’s one of the company’s strongest franchises, there’s really no reason to doubt. However, Maxis has so many other great games in its past, it would be cool to see a revival of something else. SimLife, SimAnt, SimTower, SimCopter—all are long overdue for an HD remake or brand new edition.
We’ll just have to wait until GDC to find out. The conference runs March 5 through 9 – you can still register if you live in the area and want to stop by.
What do you think Maxis is up to? What would you like them to release?

Hardcore shooters like Quake and Unreal Tournament don’t translate well when ported to consoles.
If you played first-person shooters on your PC in the 90s, you probably remember the hectic, chaotic gameplay they usually featured. In the old days, the only thing that dictated your ability to succeed in a PC shooter was the speed of your wrist. However, twitchy shooters seem to have faded out, replaced by the cover-laden frag fests to which we have all become accustomed.
Tribes Ascend executive producer Todd Harris says the problem isn’t with developers or the evolving tastes of gamers, but with creating multiplatform games. He claims that since shooters have to be simultaneously released on PC and console platforms, it’s much harder for developers to build a quick reflex, twitchy title.
He noted that console controllers dramatically limit the speed at which action can take place, since sensitivity can only go so high before the game becomes impossible to play. He also claimed that developers probably could make a twitchy game for consoles, but it’s easier to aim for the “lowest common denominator” and make tactical shooters instead of the twitchy kind.
Tribes Ascend is currently in closed beta, but will hit digital shelves sometime this spring. Expect the game to demand twitchy, reflexive gameplay—just like the shooters of old.
Unless, of course, it gets ported to PS3 or Xbox.

Spoiler alert: it’s going to be shitty.
Hey, remember that Twisted Metal movie that no one wanted, ever? Well, it’s finally coming out! Sony Pictures just tapped Brian Taylor, the mastermind behind film classics such as Crank and Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance, to direct a film based on the Twisted Metal franchise. It’s a good choice from a studio perspective – there’s no one better at making smash and crash movies with little to no substance.
According to the announcement, the film will center on combatants who use customized vehicles in fights to the death. So the original subject matter appears to have remained intact. Sweet Tooth and Doll Face will appear in the film, and that’s about all the details we have. Based on what we know about the genre, we can assume there will be one hot chick, one tough chick (played by Michelle Rodriguez, who dies), and a winning hero.
Honestly, how much do we need to know about a Twisted Metal movie? It’s going to be violent, poorly acted, and probably set to Skrillex music. And I’m sort of okay with that. It’s not like the games are some sort of bastion of innovative storytelling.
Do you think a Twisted Metal movie has any chance of being good? Or is it destined to join Super Mario Bros. and Doom in the Video Game Movie Hall of Shame?

Ó

THQ hasn’t been doing great over the last few months, and this nasty letter from a former employee doesn’t make things look any better.
THQ, the company behind Saints Row: The Third, had a tough 2011. The company was in such dire straits that rumors floated around about it canceling its entire 2014 lineup, rumors the company vehemently denied. This morning we received word that THQ was shifting its strategies yet again, this time focusing more on its core franchises over third party licensing.
It’s hard to get a bead on exactly what’s happening with THQ. Rumors and sales indicate the company is in serious trouble despite the success of Saints Row, but the company refuses to admit that they have any sort of problem. Only one person seems to be willing to comment on the state of the company – an alleged former employee with an obvious bone to pick.
In a letter written to THQ’s Board of Directors, CEO Brian Farrell as well as the general public and a collection of gaming news sites, this “Formerly Mismanaged” employee rattles off a laundry lists of complaints about the company.
The letter essentially claims that THQ’s problems stem from mismanagement and a Board of Directors that has no clue how to strategically run a gaming company. It gives examples like acquiring game studios with no plan on how to utilize their talents (then later shutting them down), investing money into shrinking niche markets, the company’s refusal to dump a CEO that has tanked its stock price and high-paid executives making enormous mistakes that call their competency into question. The disastrous uDraw tablet also makes an appearance.
These allegations of management incompetency surface just a few days before THQ announces its current financial standing on February 2, and things certainly don’t look good. One analyst has gone on the record by stating that THQ, without some sort of financial windfall, with run out of cash near the middle of this year.
You can read the letter in its (extremely long) entirety below:
[JoyStiq]
"To:
THQ Board of Directors
Lawrence Burstein
James Whims, Gigex, Inc.
Henry DeNero, Arcturus Capital
Brian Dougherty, AirSet, Inc.
Jeffrey Griffiths , Lumber Liquidators
From:
Current and Ex-Employees, Shareholders, and The Public
Dear THQ Board,
I am an ex-employee at THQ. I saw the tweet-started headlines over the past week from an "industry expert." This expert is one who I and my friends and co-workers in the industry have never heard of after a long time in the field. I had been reading the various following articles and accounts and it generated sympathy for friends both recently laid off and currently still there. I thought it would be a good idea to send a note with their input. This note has honest facts and thoughts about THQ and the current problems there. Most of these facts are public knowledge and they have been confirmed by public records or can be confirmed by current and former THQ staff there both before and after my and their time.
I have long felt the need to explain to outsiders how this beaten-down company has wound up in this position. It is to the point where having it on your resume is not a point in your favor. And that shouldn't be the case. I'm/We're sending this note anonymously because some of us are still awaiting final checks and others know how little corporations like employees who air their dirty laundry. We feel the need to say something to combat the partial misinformation being written.
THQ had been known through the years for having a formula. They find a hot license, make a cheap game, barely advertise it, and make money. This formula worked during the Playstation and Xbox and Gameboy days and made the company a lot of cash. Unfortunately, THQ's old guard executives seem to be stuck trying to manage the company the same way they did back then and haven't realized the industry has changed.
The beginning of the end came years ago as Brian Farrell lead an executive team to acquire a large number of studios. A large amount of cash was used in the acquisition or setup of game developers with different degrees of talent. The problem was they were bought without strategic reasoning or specific plan on to use them. So after awhile another large amount of money was spent as those studios failed and were sold off and shut down. The executive team at the time were an entirely different group of people with one key exception in the CEO. The CEO/the then executive team wasted the cash that the company had built up with these massive investments and selloffs.
The studio purchase errors were not helped by the mistakes in the licensing deals that were signed by the same CEO. Millions and millions of dollars were wasted on acquiring licenses at the same time the kids, family, casual business was declining at a rapid rate. Instead of slowing those acquisitions he overpaid for more of them until again cash was wasted in paying for brands that didn't sell well anymore.
The mistakes in decisions and cash losses triggered wave after wave of layoffs. In the most recent wave, about 40 people lost their jobs this past December through no fault of their own. The reason why is the chronic and constant mismanagement of their company. The fact is that the CEO and executive committee were so focused on trying to hit an unrealistic financial goal that they bet everything on an extremely risky proposition in the uDraw tablet. When they lost, they further displayed their lack of management skills by not having a contingency plan. Three weeks after the game launched, an entire business unit was wiped out when it didn't meet its goal due to relying on that one product to hit an unrealistic target.
After the layoffs many ex-employees walked around shell-shocked and trying to figure out who was responsible. They came to the understanding that most of us do after leaving the company. The issue with THQ has never been one of lack of staff creativity, intellect or business intelligence. It all rests of the failure of its management team and you the Board of Directors.
This Board has allowed the Brian Farrell, the CEO, the ongoing ability to take a cash-rich profitable company and drive it from a $30 share price down to around $.70 without acting despite numerous mistakes that even for those lacking business training, could see were errors. Even without glaring mistakes how can the same CEO stay in charge after a 99% share price loss? Aside from the board, who is responsible for the current situation and who is accountable for the current and future job losses at the company? When you ask the recently departed who are a good source of information, you get the same answers. This uDraw failure is the largest and most recent one in a string of them that were hushed over and hidden. The answer aside from the Board is the current executive team that allowed this uDraw implosion to happen.
Brian Farrell, CEO with a 2011 salary of $1,289,558, for a lack of business intelligence or fiscal accountability. A vocal inside group pointed out the mistake of trying to launch a year-old product that received almost no software support in the last 12 months. Instead of listening and having a back-up plan, he went ahead and invested a ridiculous amount of money in the manufacturing and advertising of the product and failed miserably. It is passed time for him to go. We are wondering what is taking so long for you to act. We have been wondering this same question for a long time.
Martin Good, EVP and head of Kids, Family, Casual with a 2011 salary of $1,198,023, for bringing no strategic thought or business sense to the role. He was brought out from Australia sales to replace an outgoing head of the business unit and rapidly displayed a complete lack of leadership skills, vision, and any sort of analytical sense. Looking at his compensation package, he is an excellent negotiator as his salary is higher than anyone's except for the CEO. On the plus side he lost his job with the rest of those laid off. On the minus side, he will be floating down on a golden parachute while the rest of the former employees scramble to look for jobs in this challenging environment. Most of those jobs will be at studios in other parts of the country, so they will be forced to relocate their families in the middle of their childrens school years. It is incredible that he made this level of income while doing such a poor job, but it serves as a reflection of the lack of Brian Farrell's ability to staff well and manage.
Paul Pucino, CFO with a 2011 salary of $674,855, for not planning for this possibility and having a safety net or a plan to cover THQ just in case of failure. We have a line of credit that we likely used to buy the plastic that is not selling to customers. It is like taking a cash advance to buy THQ stock and just as worthless of an investment. Paul is known as an absentee executive who is missing when business situations gets complicated. While he was in the loop at the point of the risk, with the following failure he has been clearly unavailable. It is another example of Brian Farrell's inability to staff.
Ian Curran, EVP and head of global publishing with a 2011 salary of $1,037,047, for not flagging an unrealistic sales goal to the CEO or the Board when a big part of the corporation felt the numbers were unrealistic. He blindly held up an unachievable target and didn't act when multiple people told him he was aiming to high and out of step with the marketplace. If a sales executive's job is to anticipate the market, he has done a poor job of it. Another example of Brian Farrell not being able to find the right people for the right job.
Ed Kauffman, EVP of Legal and Business Affairs who clearly was signing bad deals on licensed products, not factoring in the changes in the business and being more critical with financial terms with partners. uDraw by itself cannot possibly explain the companies poor financial health. It is a combination of that product and a string of bad licensed deals that the company took on against better judgement. While Brain Farrell would logically be the final decisionmaker for deals, Kauffman is either unpersuasive in his arguments to not do them or supported them. Either situation equates to another example of poor staffing choices by the CEO.
uDraw was failure and the only people to blame are the people listed above. THQ and its current financial situation is also their responsibility. And they were paid around $4.5 million dollars for their poor decisions. If there is any doubt we would recommend talking to current and former staff to get the straight story. Don't read this note as bitterness on their part, but more as long overdue truth.
So, Board, it is time. Passed time for you to act and passed time for you to do something about the mismanagement that has gone on for too many years. We've watched the stock from the outside and read the comments and the reason why the company is valued so low despite its sales is because of this underqualified management team.
Board it is time for you to act before your names are added to the list above of things that must change.
Sincerely,
The Formerly Mismanaged"

Most of the big stuff has come out already, but there are still plenty of new games to play in this week’s edition of “On Shelves.”
It looks like the crazy holiday release schedule is finally slowing down, with most of the major releases already on shelves and waiting to be picked up. But the games industry is an ever-moving beast, and there are still quite a few games scheduled for release in the upcoming week.
Who knows, some of them might even be good! But when an iPhone game is the biggest launch of the week, don’t expect any miracles.
Here’s your list of releases, organized in no way at all:
Infinity Blade II
iPhone, iPad
ESRB N/A
Epic Games
Heavy Fire: Afghanistan – The Chosen Few
PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, 3DS
ESRB Teen
Mastiff
Steel Armor – Blaze of War
PC
ESRB RP
Play Indie
Jaws: Ultimate Predator
Wii, 3DS
ESRB Teen
Majesco Studios
Small World Tunnels
PC
ESRB RP
Days of Wonder
Face Racers: Photo Finish
Nintendo 3DS
ESRB E
Majesco
Combat Arms: Zombies
iPhone
ESRB N/A
Nexon
That’s pretty much it for this week. There are a few other minor titles coming out, but honestly Infinity Blade II is the only thing on this list I had even heard of before today. GameSpot’s list is missing box art for 2/3s of the list.
Looks like this may be the break everyone needed for Skyrim!

The pre-order exclusives for Final Fantasy XIII-2 just keep on coming, with Square Enix and GameStop announcing yet another bonus for pre-order customers.
Final Fantasy XIII-2 is supposed to be everything that Final Fantasy XIII wasn’t, but we won’t know if Square Enix has succeeded at that until later next year. In the meantime, all we have to go on are the pre-order bonuses that keep cropping up all over the place, with everything from boss fights to bonus weapons being mentioned depending on where you choose to buy.
GameStop already has the exclusive costume for Serah, but it looks like they realized that Amazon has the drop on them with the Omega boss battle, so they’re upping the ante with this weapon:
The Genji Bow takes the form of either a bow or sword (duh) and allows you to attack more frequently, whatever that means. Not sure if it refills your ATB gauge faster or gives you a haste bonus, but it’s an in-combat boost either way. Here’s the catch though: the Genji Bow is only available to PowerUP Rewards members that pre-order the game; regular pre-orders will not receive anything besides the costume.
The bonus item is retroactive – if you’ve already pre-ordered and you’re a member, you’ll automatically receive it with your copy of FFXIII-2.
Pre-order bonuses mostly serve to make games review-proof by encouraging people to buy things before they read about them or try them, but we’re starting to see bonuses splintered into more and more specific tiers.
What do you think about offering a reward only to special sections of your customer base?

Ó

Drake’s latest adventure just blew up all over my Twitter feed. Let’s find out what some of the major reviewers are saying about what could be the biggest PlayStation 3 title of the year.
As someone that has a general taste for Sony and the PlayStation brand, I have to admit that I’m a little jealous of Uncharted. The game looks amazing, the story is great, and as much as it pains me to say it, they did an excellent job on both of the games that have come out so far. So, nice work to the Naughty Dog team and congratulations to PS3 owners everywhere – you finally won one.
Anyway, Uncharted 3 has been sitting in the back of everyone’s mind even as Activision and EA ramp up their ridiculous war for the holiday season. Last week we saw a little bit of the game through Harrison Ford’s eyes, and the multiplayer beta (available only at Subway!) has generated a fair amount of buzz. Regardless of any perceived battle of the titans, Uncharted 3 is still holding a significant amount of attention from both the gaming media and fans of the brand.
I periodically check my Twitter (follow me! @Mikedotfoster) feed for breaking news updates when I’m writing, and the last update found my feed under siege with Uncharted 3 reviews. So let’s see what the preliminary response to the game has turned out to be:
Joystiq – 4.5 Stars
They loved the co-op mode, praised the game’s excellent storytelling and graphics, and essentially said the game was an inch away from perfection. They did note that a lot of the game’s greatness comes from re-using elements of Uncharted 2, but called this more of a positive than negative.
GameTrailers – 9.5 out of 10
Voice acting is praised and the script is noted as one of the game’s strongest elements. They noted a continued lack of flexibility from former titles, but fans of the game are probably used to this facet and consider it a plus. The game’s massive set pieces are mentioned as a major highlight, but the poor enemy AI draws some negative attention. Overall, they say the game “can’t be missed.”
IGN – 10 out of 10
IGN’s review could only be described as “gushing.” They even went so far as to call the game a “masterpiece,” focusing entirely on the massive set pieces and series of high-budget action sequences. IGN says that Uncharted 3 is one of “gaming’s finest moments,” but their review seems lacking on any technical analysis and focuses almost entirely on the emotional experiences of the player.
Ars Technica – (No Rating)
As with the other reviews, a strong focus is placed on the strong character development and impressive narrative. They do note that the game dances with believability a little bit, and that the combat system still feels pretty rough in certain situations. They also mention that the jumping puzzles are repetitive, but overall give the game high praise and consider it an achievement for Naughty Dog and the PS3.
EuroGamer – 8 out of 10
Calling the single-player campaign “peerless,” EuroGamer sings high praise about the game’s execution but pulls back their accolades by calling Uncharted 3 narrow and shallow. They note that fans of the franchise and cinema will be happy with this latest title, but shouldn’t expect too much in the way of risk-taking or flexibility.
Overall, it looks like Uncharted 3 is a strong buy. There’s no room to customize your experience and the story is apparently straight as an arrow, but the multiplayer seems to add replay value and the overall experience can’t be matched. A fitting new entry to one of the best PS3 franchises, and one that should keep fans happy for some time to come.
Are you picking up Uncharted 3 next week?

Ó

The addition of the Pandaren in WoW’s latest expansion, plus the insertion of a Pokémon-like mini-game, seems to be the final step in sending the franchise into the ground.
Before I start this, I should note that I’m a huge World of Warcraft fan. It was actually the first computer game I played, since I grew up with consoles and never got around to PC gaming. I jumped on board about a month after the launch of vanilla WoW, and I played all the way through Wrath. I even worked at Blizzard for a couple of years, in a position my NDA explicitly forbids me from disclosing. What I’m saying is, you can trust me when I say I know WoW and its players pretty well.
I’ve been loosely following the progress of WoW since I walked away from it late last year. Cataclysm certainly looked like a step in the right direction, but the gradual dumbing down of WoW with simplified talent trees, charity epics and gold flowing from the hills like a waterfall turned me off to the whole thing. I enjoyed Wrath of the Lich King, but the challenge I had seen in dungeons like Upper Blackrock Spire and Blackwing Lair, and to a lesser degree the Black Temple, never really resurfaced. When a group of ten random people could clear a raid in one night, I knew that the game couldn’t offer me much of a challenge.
Mist of Pandaria, announced at Blizzcon yesterday,  looks like it’s designed to do one thing – make the fans happy. While this is certainly a good plan for generating sales, it doesn’t do much for the hardcore player looking for a challenge. All of the announced features seem to be making WoW even easier, and while casuals should absolutely have a place in any game, it just doesn’t seem like the same game that drew our passion and love in 2005. If you remember, Pandaren were added to Warcraft 3 as a joke – fans just happened to like them so they got retconned into the story.
Hell, even Blizzard was amazed that people liked them. Here’s a quote from the guy that designed the Pandaren Monk art for the original joke, Samwise Didier:
"But so we put that up in there and everyone was like “Oh my God! A PANDA RACE? That’s kind of cool!” And I’m like “Are you kidding me, really? You want to see pandas in Warcraft III or whatever?”
And now they’re taking that joke and shoving it into WoW. It’s been sad to watch the Warcraft lore die over the last few years and it’s pretty evident that Blizzard may be running out of ideas. They’ve basically pillaged everything they can from their history instead of coming up with new stories to tell, and an entire expansion based on the Pandaren makes it clear that they don’t have much left for World of Warcraft.
What’s really telling is the addition of a Pokémon-like mini-game, in which players will force their non-combat pets to fight. You’ll also be able to find and capture pets in the wild and then train them to be better fighters. It’s an interesting concept for killing time between raids or groups, but it also says a lot about how the WoW player base has changed in the last six years. Essentially, WoW has gone from MMO to casual Facebook game; it just has a nicer interface.
We’ll  have to see how the expansion goes – maybe I’m just an idiot. Maybe people want to play as Pandaren, and maybe they’ll have a great time. But it certainly looks like the WoW I loved is dead, and there won’t be any reason to come back. I just don’t think Blizzard knows how to update the franchise for hardcore players anymore. That, or they don’t care.
Guess we’ll just have to wait for that other top-secret Blizzard project, huh? Are you still going to play World of Warcraft after the new expansion?
