And it’s white!
Early this morning, Microsoft (via Major Nelson) announced that yet another Xbox 360 bundle was on its way to store shelves. This one, the Xbox 360 Special Edition 4GB Kinect Family Bundle (seriously?), starts shipping immediately—look for it at your local retailer sooner rather than later.
So what comes with this particular bundle? Here’s a breakdown:
White Xbox 360 4GB
White Kinect
White Xbox 360 Wireless Controller
Kinexct Sports
Kinect Adventures
Three Months of Xbox Live Gold
The bundle will be priced at $299, making it one of the best deals around if you’re on the market for a Kinect and an Xbox with a ridiculously small hard drive. Microsoft also announced that a special edition white wireless controller is launching with the bundle, available for $49.99. No word on why it’s so special.
Do you think Microsoft’s ever-changing bundle system is a good idea for sales, or are the many bundles simply confusing consumers?

Capcom revises its initial price point for the upcoming Nintendo 3DS title.
Resident Evil Revelations is due out for the Nintendo 3DS in just a couple of weeks, and up until now we were fully expecting to pay $49.99 for the game. This price, a bit higher than normal for 3DS titles, was apparently the result of the game being installed on a 4GB card instead of the usual 2GB.
While Capcom noted that it was confident the game’s quality was well worth the extra cash, they didn’t seem happy about the higher price point. And, according to a statement on their official site, they’ve been looking for weeks to find ways to eliminate the discrepancy. It looks like they figured it out.
As of now, Resident Evil Revelations is priced at the normal rate of $39.99. It’s worth noting that the price change only applies to United States version of the game – if you live somewhere else, you’ll need to stay tuned to Capcom for further updates.
What do you think of the pricing change? Is Capcom really fighting for the wallets of consumers, or just afraid the extra $10 will scare off potential buyers?

Find out what your fellow QJers are talking about this week, as drama blooms from all corners.
Indie developers take a shot at Nintendo and Sony, GameStop leaked potential Vita memory card prices and Iran has a serious problem with one of the biggest games of the year. These are among the hottest news posts here on QJ, sparking up intense arguments and polite discussion from readers.
If you’re just sitting down for your Saturday reading, we’ve compiled five of the biggest stories from the week right here so you can get up to speed post-haste. Also, as is now Saturday tradition, I’ll be awarding one lucky/unlucky QJ reader the prestigious “Comment of the Week” award.
Without further ado, here’s your:
Should Nintendo and Sony Stop Making Consoles?
Indie and mobile developer Andy Payne thinks that Nintendo and Sony are limiting themselves by making their own hardware and developing software with exclusivity. His recommendation is that they stop worrying about hardware and focus entirely on software, distributing to mobile markets. What do you think?
Iran Bans Battlefield 3
The Iranian government is not pleased with the way Iran was treated in Battlefield 3, to the point of banning the game from sale in their country. The game’s primary offender? A staged attack by U.S. forces against Iran’s capital city of Tehran. There are two sides to this argument – you could argue that Iran is overreacting to a video game, but you could also argue that they’re justified in objecting to the content. Where do you land on this one?
Where and When Should the Next Assassin’s Creed Go?
We know Ubisoft is planning another Assassin’s Creed game, and it looks like they’re turning to their players for advice on where to set it. A leaked survey to fans of the franchise lists several possible locations, including the Victorian British Empire, Medieval China, and even the American Revolution. You can see the full list on the post and add your favorite location in the comments.
PlayStation Vita Memory Cards are Pricey
This is by far the most-commented story of the week – GameStop, using rough Yen conversions, posted prices for the proprietary memory cards that will be available for Sony’s Vita handheld, and gamers are not pleased with the cost. The smallest card, at 4GB, runs $29.99 – a far cry from what similarly sized non-Sony memory cards cost nowadays. Of course, Yen conversion is tricky, so we’ll have to wait on an official Sony announcement before throwing too big a hissy fit.
What is Your Game of the Year?
In this post, QJ writer Tim Curtain poses the question on everyone’s mind: What exactly is the best game of the year. With huge titles like Skyrim, Portal 2 and Skyward Sword on the list, it’s going to be hard for anyone to truly nail down a winner. Dark Souls is making a strong appearance in the comments section, as is Portal 2 – what game would you call the best if you had the chance?
Those are your five most talked about QJ posts for the week. And now it’s time for that very special Saturday ritual – the awarding of Comment of the Week. This week’s award goes to triac for his comment on Skyrim Patch Breaks More than it Fixes:
The CG machine is broken again!

If you’re planning to buy a Vita, don’t forget to figure the cost of a memory card into your expenses.
PlayStation Vita is being hailed as the future of handheld gaming, but for all of its technological innovations it still requires one thing many gamers consider almost archaic at this point: external memory cards. The device has a decent amount of internal memory, but if you’re planning to download games directly to the unit, you’ll need the help of an extra card – especially if you are the type of person that buys tons of DLC.
Thanks to GameStop, we now have a general idea of how much you can expect your PS Vita memory card to run. Roughly speaking, the smallest card (4GB) will cost you $30, with the largest (32GB) landing at $120. The low-end card isn’t too terribly priced, but you have to wonder how quickly hardcore gamers will fill up a 4GB card with downloaded titles and DLC content.
Here are a couple of lame things about the memory cards: they’re proprietary, meaning you can’t just buy a cheaper card somewhere and plug it into your unit. Also, it’s been confirmed that some PS Vita games will save exclusively to memory cards, meaning you’ll have to buy one at some point regardless of your download habits. Games like Uncharted, Dream Club Zero and Disgaea 3 will all require memory cards. And while they’re not priced so high that they seem ridiculous, comparing the $30 cost of a 4GB Vita card to any other memory card quickly shows the price difference. For example, a quick Google search yields plenty of 16-20GB cards in the $20-30 range.
What do you think about Vita’s memory card requirements, and the subsequent price points?

It took them the PSP Go to finally make a hardline stance on the matter, but now Sony has seen the light and is insisting that now is not the time for a download-only console.
Said Shuhei Yoshida, Sony Worldwide Studios boss, "We believe, for some consumers, the time is [right], but for other consumers, the time is still not [right]. So we believe the time is still not right to go download-only as a platform."
What could be the deciding factor as to why they are siding with those consumers who not ready for a download-only approach in gaming? It's simple: broadband internet. "Some PS Vita titles, like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, will be close to 4GB in size, which could be too large to download for consumers who do not have a fast broadband connection." But apart from this, "Some consumers like shopping in retail stores, talking to knowledgeable store clerks, buying and playing games on the spot. We do not want to remove that capability from consumers."
SCEE's Jim Ryan concurs, saying that, "There are consumers in parts of the world - this is a global device - where the digital model has not yet fully been embraced." And it's true, really. In fact, in a study recently concluded, not even the US or UK are in the forerunners of downloading speed. And mind you, everyone gets just a tad bit -- okay, that's not true, a whole LOT -- more impatient when it comes to downloading their stuff on the Internet. What more if it's a game that you've been waiting for eons to come?
Nobody would want to sit around several hours just waiting for the download to finish, on top of the full year (at a minimum) that you've already spent just waiting in anticipation for the game to hit retail.
I would have to agree with Sony on this one. The global infrastructure for a hi-speed connection just isn't all that well set yet. Of course, as a business, they'll have to take into top consideration as well what their other consumers' capacity for enjoying their products are going to be.
The failure of the PSP Go most definitely made this impact on them. Releasing the system without the UMD was a misstep on their part, which they immediately realized when it went dead cold on store shelves just months after its launch. And then they atoned for it by coming up with the PlayStation Vita.
Not to say that a download-only console will be nay possible in the future, but as for now, am fine with my physical media as it is. There's someting fairly comforting having it in the palm of my hands.

We've seen it coming, but nonetheless, it still doesn't make it any less astounding when the news is made official.

We've seen it coming, but nonetheless, it still doesn't make it any less astounding when the news is made official. We knew the PlayStation Vita won't be coming with a memory card, and we're already expecting that it will be costing some arm and leg from us.

So, what's the official verdict? The PlayStation Vita memory cards definitely are not coming for cheap. Based on the press release that Sony Japan sent out for the PS Vita's Japanese launch, there will be four different sizes for the cards when they come out:
4GB - JPY 2,200 (US$ 29)
8GB - JPY 3,200 (US$ 42)
16GB - JPY, 5,500 (US$ 72)
32GB - JPY 9,500 (US$ 124)
Now, these cards are all under the Sony brand, of course, but you do have the option to use instead third-party cards. They should be much cheaper than the Sony ones, so at least you have that alternative. The only setback is that these third-party manufactured cards might not work as efficiently as a Sony card would. Yeah, they've tied us down to them efficiently that way.
They've got a lot more accessories to bleed your wallet out dry with, so in case you want to check those out as well, just follow the source link below for the full press release.
In the meantime, Yoshinori Ono is advising Western fans to keep their behinds glued to their seats, and just keep their cool waiting for the Vita to arrive in the region.

There's a problem with Metal Gear Solid 3D: Snake Eater being on the Nintendo 3DS. Konami has revealed that the game is just too big for it to fit on the handheld's cartridges.
Explained Kojima Productions Creative Producer Yoshikazu Matsuhana, "We incorporated so many 3DS-exclusive features into this game, but the only problem we ran into was the size of the 3DS cartridge itself. We spoke to Nintendo about this issue and theylet us use, for the first time ever, an exclusive 4GB cartridge for the game."
If that's the case then, all's well that ends well. Fortunately, Nintendo was able to come up with a quick solution for the issue. It would have been such a shame for the 3DS if it were to miss out on a solid game such as Metal Gear Solid 3D.

Earlier this year, reports landed on the Internet, supposedly of Sony telling licensees "the device 'is as powerful as its big brother, the PS3." Fast forward to the ongoing Game Developers Conference in San Francisco, however, and here we have the company denying they made any claims of the sort.
"Some people in the press have said wow, this thing... could be as powerful as PS3," said David Coombes, platform research manager for SCEA. "Well, it's not going to run at 2GHz because the battery would last five minutes. And it would probably set fire to your pants."
Having disspelled that notion of the NGP being as powerful, or even rivaling the PS3, Sony then went on to present their demo of the NGP, as well as shed some more details about it.
The game cards, according to him, will be available in shops, in two sizes: 2GB and 4GB. Given these numbers, it's then very obvious that it does not even come close to the usual 9GB size of a game for the PS3, on Blu-ray.
He does, however, remained mum about just how much the internal memory of the NGP will actually have. "I can't talk about the actual numbers, but compared to the PSP we have a LOT of memory... we're closer to PS3 than PSP in terms of memory size."
The original PSP model (Phat/1000) had 32MB worth of memory. The successors -- Slim/2000, 3000 and PSP Go -- meanwhile, all had 64MB. As for the PS3, it has 256 MB system, and 256 MB video. Given these numbers, and his clue that the NGP's memory leans more towards that of the PS3's than the previous PSP models, it should probably be around... 150-200ish? That's just a wild guess from my part, though.
Apart from that, he also discussed the two versions that the NGP will be having. While both versions will have Wi-Fi, one edges out over the other because of the 3G network connectivity. The version with the 3G feature also will have GPS sensors. Those who will be getting the Wi-Fi only version need not feel left out, though. You can still rely on the wi-fi to "do quite accurate positioning." In fact, "in urban areas, it's more accurate than GPS," he said.
He then went on to talk about the hardware itself. As you now know, and have probably ogled at and scrutinized for every waking hour since it was officially unveiled, the NGP will be sporting a front touch screen, as well as a rear touch pad. Both of these touch-surfaces would be able to detect how much pressure you're putting on the handheld. It's what they call the "analogue strength reading". As to what it can do for you, well, let's just say at least now you can see for yourself how hard you're mashing those buttons -- or in this case, that screen.
Other details you must know about the NGP:
5-inch screen
960x544 resolution
anti-aliasing
Having done his part of the Sony presentation of the NGP, Tsutomu Horikawa, SCEI director of sotware interantional development partner in Tokyo, then took to the stage to show off what the NGP can actually do.
The augmented reality demonstration had the NGP "visualizing" a T-Rex in the theatre's aisle. Sounds cool, yes? Guess what. It looks even cooler. Just check it out in the embedded video below.
Now, the show did not end there. Sony had a lot of other goodies to show off. And why not? It's the perfect time to shut up the naysayers, to prove that Sony is still so in the handhelds race.
They had two other live demos featuring the NGP software, featuring some of the games that will be coming to it. There's Little Deviants and Uncharted Portable showing GDC attendees the hot stuff.
