Sony Reports on Vita Game Sales

The system is off to a strong start with excellent digital and retail game sales.

PlayStation Vita has had a solid launch over in Japan, selling well over 320,000 units and moving 300,000 launch games off shelves. While some news outlets are reporting the software totals as below par, what they don’t take into account are the digital downloads offered by Sony.

The Nintendo 3DS, for example, had a first-week attachment rate of 0.95, meaning almost everyone that bought a system bought a game. PSP’s was 1.06. Vita’s looks low, but without numbers on digital downloads, it’s hard to get a bead on exactly how well things are going.

Sony has confirmed that their in-store game sales are about what they were hoping for, but also that download versions are “exceeding expectations.” They didn’t drop an official number, though one will almost certainly be released in the coming weeks.

For now, it looks like Vita is having a relatively successful launch. First-week numbers are strong and the unit has fair momentum heading into the winter doldrums of entertainment properties.

Do you think these sales figures indicate a willingness on the part of gamers to shift to digital distribution? Steam and other services are already wildly successful, but what about for consoles and handhelds?

3DS Firmware Update Live

Nintendo updates the 3D handheld with 3D video recording and a few other new features.

Nintendo has finally updated their 3DS handheld with all new firmware in an update pushed live across the globe early this morning. So what’s in store for gamers that download the update? For starters, 3D video recording. But the list of changes certainly doesn’t end there.

The 3DS’s new video-recording software allows you to take up to 10 minutes of footage – Nintendo has even included settings that allow you to make stop-motion or time-lapsed 3D films. You’ll also find a new quest for StreetPass, new panels for Puzzle Swap, and a special geographical map that unlocks as you run into new Miis around your neighborhood and the world.

They’ve even added achievements, though they’re calling them “Accomplishments.” Plus, the eShop now allows for continued downloads in sleep mode, and features support for the addition of demos. All in all, it’s a pretty meaty update for the 3DS. The 3D video thing is cool, but all of the other features are handy as well.

1.2 million downloaded Ace Combat demo

If the number of downloads for Ace Combat on both the PSN and XBL would be any indication, then the flight-fighter game is in good shape for its release next week.

Namco Bandai has released the information that the demo for Ace Combat: Assault Horizon hit the 1.2 million mark in downloads since its release last month. The demo featured two missions, coupled with jets and helicopters to further fuel the experience.

The aerial dogfighting series will not only be keeping busy with the consoles, but also on the handhelds, with it also heading to the Nintendo 3DS. That should provide for yet another option for you if in case the console versions and the Limited Edition do not cut it.

Ace Combat: Assault Horizon comes out in Japan next week, October 13th, for both the PS3 and Xbox 360.

Nintendo's downloadables aren't getting any better

Nintendo has detailed the week's update for their online stores and things aren't looking so good. It's just that kind of time for them, I suppose. But if they're planning to launch yet another store for the 3DS, they should at least give their customers something to look forward to in the long run. This isn't a good example.

New prepaid card for the 3DS eShop announced

Back in January, Nintendo broke the news that their Nintendo eShop will be using the currency over the points system for their downloads. Today, they've also announced your other option for it.

We all know that not all eShop users will be having a debit or credit card within their reach. Minor gamers, most especially, will most likely have to rely on their parents' good graces.

They won't have to worry all to much about Nintendo's new system for the 3DS eShop, though. At their official website, Nintentdo let out word that they will also actually be releasing 3DS prepaid cards later on.

They did not specify what denominations will the prepaid cards have, but at least we know that there's another option out there that will stil allow you to shop on the eShop knowing how much you're actually spending.

We'll keep you posted on any more updates about this.
