Why the innovative games company is headed for failure.

Nintendo is, by most accounts, one of the most innovative forces in the world of gaming. The company lays claim to breakthroughs like force-feedback technology, motion control, z-targeting and a whole host of other now-standard gaming mechanics. Unfortunately, Nintendo’s days of leading the pack are quickly coming to a close.

Nintendo has always performed well in the games marketplace because of its exclusive titles and accessible technologies. However, games aren’t really the future of the games industry. In 2012 and beyond, it’s not games that sell devices, but their multimedia capabilities. One of the fastest-growing groups of console owners is made up of people who primarily use their devices to watch Netflix, listen to music or rent movies.

Nintendo has failed to keep pace with its competitors in the realm of multimedia. And it has also failed to keep pace when it comes to online gaming (friend codes, seriously?). If the Wii U can’t make some major improvements to the way Nintendo delivers multimedia content and online gameplay, it’s simply not going to be the console of choice.

Consumers always flock to the device that provides them the most value. A large number of PS3 sales can be chalked up to Blu-Ray support, just as a large number of Wii sales can be chalked up to the initial hype concerning motion control. In the next console generation, the device with the most utility wins.

If Nintendo fails to recognize this trend, it’s going to find itself toppled from the throne faster than it can say “3DS Lite.”

Nintendo Network Announced at Investor Briefing

Nintendo takes another step into the present with its own digital delivery service.

The Nintendo investor briefing held early this morning in Japan was chock full of good news for the company. In addition to predicting that the 3DS will finally hit profitability in 2012 and announcing an all-new Super Mario side-scroller, the company had quite the bombshell to drop – a digital delivery service called the Nintendo Network.

Satoru Iwata, Nintendo president, offer up a few details on what gamers can expect from the new service. Expect the Communities system to return, which allows people who aren’t on each other’s friends lists to play together. There’s also full support for DLC, a feature on which Nintendo has been way behind the curve. You’ll also find a wide range of downloadable games, similar to the Nintendo eShop but more robust in both lineup and functionality.

All in all, it looks like Nintendo has finally realized that if it wants to stay competitive in the next console generation, it has to dramatically up its online game. The Wii’s online capabilities were decent, but friend codes and other unnecessary complexities dragged it down. Here’s hoping the new Nintendo Network will alleviate some of those problems and make the Wii U a more online-ready machine.

Pushmo/Pullblox hits Nintendo’s European eShop

The newest game from Advance Wars developer Intelligent Systems drops for Nintendo 3DS systems later this week.

Exciting news for European fans of the Advance Wars franchise: Intelligent Systems, the company behind those fun, time-eating games, is prepped to drop their newest title directly to Nintendo’s European eShop. The game, which goes by the name Hiku-Osu in Japan, Pushmo in North America and now Pullblox in the European market, should be available later this week for direct download.

The game is your basic puzzler with a story thrown in – Mallo, the hero of the game, must rescue kids from his Pushmo park by solving increasingly complex block puzzles. If you played Catherine (or its demo), you’ll probably find the puzzle mechanic familiar. Basically, you have to slide blocks through a semi-3D space in order to create a stairway to the top of the structure.

Actually, here, just watch this. It’s easier than explaining the thing:

Hiku-Osu/Pullblox/Pushmo is priced at £5.40 on the Euro eShop; not too shabby for a game with 250 levels and a level editor. It’s certainly not a brand new Advance Wars title, but it looks like an interesting puzzler from a company with a very solid track record.

Walmart Cancels SWTOR Pre-Orders

Oops! The massive retailer has apparently deleted or lost a huge stack of Old Republic pre-orders.

Walmart is a pretty big force in the world of retail, and it’s safe to assume that a fair number of gamers with Star Wars: The Old Republic pre-orders placed those orders at a Walmart counter. Unfortunately for them, it looks like the store is having a bit of an issue tracking down some of those orders, thanks to either a mistake, data loss, or just plain incompetence.

Some players that pre-ordered SWTOR through Walmart are receiving emails that state the pre-order has been canceled due to a “temporary shipping issue,” which frankly doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. There’s no official word on how many pre-orders have been affected, nor is their information on whether or not people with canceled orders will be getting their money back. However, all signs point to thousands of deletions at the very least, and the possibility that Walmart may have canceled every SWTOR pre-order for both the Standard and Collector’s editions of the game.

While it’s unclear if affected players will be able to pick up the edition of the game they originally ordered, there is one bit of good news – if you’ve already registered your pre-order code, you’ll still have early access to the game.

We’ll just have to wait and see how this plays out. Reports right now are largely coming from the Bioware forums and upset players; Walmart’s response has been limited to automatic/mass emails. The last word indicated that players would have more information about their orders sometime before December 7.

Want some Animal Crossing 3DS Details?

A recent dev diary drops a ton of information regarding the next installment in the “chop down trees, plant flowers” franchise.

Animal Crossing is a strange game. On the surface, you wouldn’t think it would be that interesting – get a mortgage, run errands, talk to neighbors and do a ton of landscaping. But something about the game’s cute design and free-roaming nature make it appealing, and Animal Crossing has become one of Nintendo’s biggest exclusive franchises.

Animal Crossing fans are waiting for Animal Crossing 3DS, but details were scant regarding what to expect. However, the developers have just posted a very long, very boring diary that has a few interesting tidbits scattered through it.

Here’s the important stuff:

In Animal Crossing 3DS, you play as the mayor of your city

You can choose what to put in your town, or what not to put in your town

You can paint your house and re-upholster your furniture with custom designs

Pants and shirts confirmed!

There are a few other small details in the video, if you have the time to sit through it and you’re an Animal Crossing fan. For example, Tom Nook will return, but this time as a respectable real estate dealer instead of the man to which you are an indentured servant.

Nintendo Banks on Bieber Fever

The games company is banking on the teen heartthrob to encourage new 3DS sales.

Black Friday treated Nintendo well, and the Nintendo 3DS has officially out-performed the original DS in terms of first year sales. But Nintendo isn’t one to rest on its laurels, and has a full-on media blitz planned to carry its products through the holiday season. One part of this blitz apparently includes spending what must have been a huge pile of money to have the 3DS prominently featured in a Justin Bieber/Mariah Carey video, which you can watch below.

Fair warning – Bieber is auto-tuned into oblivion and the video is absolutely obnoxious, so you can skip to the incredibly obvious product placement at 1:58 if you don’t want to sit through this whole thing.

Bieber is a big factor for parents with young teens, especially of the female variety. I’m not sure whether seeing young Justin load up on Nintendo 3DSs will encourage his fans to buy a few for themselves, but Nintendo certainly seems to think it’s a gamble worth taking. I can’t imagine they earned such a prominent position in the video without a sizeable investment.

One thing’s for sure – putting Justin Bieber on the same track as someone that can actually sing wasn’t the best idea. I’m sure his fans won’t care, but hearing that auto-tuned robot voice next to Mariah Carey makes it all the more obvious that this kid’s days in the industry are numbered.

Oh, and shame on whoever made that for ruining one of the few Christmas songs I actually (and embarrassingly) like.

For the first time since it was announced, we will now be getting to see a glimpse of what awaits us in the final three years of Harry Potter and the gang's Lego-fied adventure, thanks to this very first trailer for the LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-

Of course we all know how the story went. A lot of important characters died in the book, and shown in the movie as well, of course, such as Dumbledore and Snape. Heck, even Harry died. But he did go back to life and in the end defeeated Voldemort.

Oh, you didn't finish all the way to the end of the series? Come on, even the movie is finished already, and that's after the book came out some couple of years back! I suggest you go finish it before this game version comes out.

Not that it's going to matter in how you play the game, but am guessing it's just going to be more fun seeing the words from the book, and the scenes from the movie, transformed into these adorable building blocks.

LEGO Harry Potter: Years 5-7 comes out for all platforms conceivable (really!). As in, for the PS3, Xbox 360, PC, Wii, PS Vita, PSP, NDS and 3DS later this holiday season.

King of Pirates announced for 3DS

Intercept, Keiji Inafune's new company, has something up its sleeves, and it's headed towards the Nintendo 3DS.

Inafune-san himself made the reveal that their new title, King of Pirates, will be coming to the 3D handheld sometime at a yet unspecified date.

King of Pirates, so he explained, will take place in the middle of the ocean, which should only make sense because that is where pirates spend a good deal of their time, "where heroes fight for ambition, justic, and their lives."

Other reports on the game point out that it is actually going to be a trilogy - if all goes well according to plan - and will also feature the now-staple multiplayer mode.

To give you a clearer picture of these pirates, Intercept also sent out this teaser trailer. King of Pirats is slated as of now to come out only to Japan, but that's just for now. They might have word for other territories later on. It will be published by Marvelous AQL, the same guys behind the Harvest Moon franchise.

Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney incoming at TGS

This tandem is one that's sure to go down into the "Awesome" section of gaming history books. And to think it almost didn't happen!

Capcom confirmed that Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney will be making an appearance at the upcoming Tokyo Game Show event later this week.

According to their schedule, Professor Layton and Phoenix Wright wil be taking the stage as part of the Capcom show on September 16th, from 1:40PM to 2:10PM, Tokyo time.

Since we all can't fly to Tokyo for the TGS and catch this appearance in person, here are the different times you can catch it if you're going to be tuning in via streaming or whatnot: 2:40PM, Sydney; 5:40Am BST; 12:40AM EDT, 9:40PM PDT, September 15th.

Ushering them onto the TGS stage are Capcom's Shu Takumi and Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino. It's expected that the duo will be divulging some more pertinent information about the outing of the professor and the Attorney on the 3DS.

We're keeping our fingers crossed that they will finally say something about a Western release for this game. All we have to hold on to is this old trailer from last year's Tokyo event.

Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney was first confirmed last year. Keiji Inafune of Capcom revealed that time that he thought it would be "impossible" to get these two heavy-hitting franchises together, but we're glad they did make it happen.

Capcom prefers to prioritize Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD localization

Fans of the HD version of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd will surely be glad to know that Capcom wants to put its localization on top of to-do list over everything else.

Of course, what makes it a double cause for joy is that implicit in that statement is that they will, although much later, also be dealing with the localization of the other titles in the series. This was the revelation made by Christian Svensson over at their official forums, Capcom-Unity.

"Soon is a relative term," he said when asked whether or not there will be any new MH titles coming to the North American region, "but I would say that Western MH fans have lots to be excited about for the future. Admittedly I do hope we can find a way to get P3 HD Westward somehow sooner than those other things but as I've mentioned, it's an open item."

The HD for MHP 3rd came out in Japan just a couple of weeks back in August to massive success, sitting on top of the Japanese charts.

Gaijin Games has come out with a brand new trailer for their trippy new title for the WiiWare and iOS platforms, Bit.Trip.

This game basically is a series of video games, which focuses on "Commander Video", the oddly named lead character for the game. Those who have played SuperMeat Boy should find him familiar, and rightfully so, because Commander Video did make a cameo there.

Anyway, do check out what Commander Video can actually do for you:

Bit.Trip. comes for the WiiWare is published by Aksys Games for the WiiWare, and by Namco Networks America Inc. for the iOS versions. It's set to come out on September 13, alongside Bit.Trip. Saga for the 3DS.
