Thanks to a hardware shift and restrictive DRM, several Ubisoft titles will be offline next week.
Ubisoft’s solution to the DRM debate was what is known as “always-on” DRM. Basically, in order to play Ubisoft’s games, you must have a persistent internet connection. While you play, your system periodically checks in with Ubisoft’s servers to ensure that your game isn’t (gasp!) pirated.
It’s a good idea in theory, but a terrible one in practice. People without strong internet connections experience constant disconnects even from single player content, and issues with Ubisoft’s servers have rendered several games unplayable on multiple occasions. It’s safe to say that the gaming public isn’t generally fond of always-on DRM.
And here’s yet another reason to be against restrictive DRM: Ubisoft has announced that it’s shuffling a bit of its hardware around next week (making upgrades and the like), and as a result of this in-house tinkering, several titles will be effectively shut down. HAWX 2, The Settlers 7 and Might and Magic: Heroes 6 will all be inaccessible while Ubisoft gets its hardware sorted – there’s no estimation from the company regarding how long this will take.
Ubisoft’s servers shut down on February 7, locking out thousands of players for an unknown duration. And while this information certainly serves to support the anti-always-on DRM argument, Ubisoft still believes in the concept and considers it a shining success.
What do you think? Should a publisher have the ability to shut down your games remotely (either on purpose or by accident), or should you control access to games you buy?

Call of Duty locking DLC to ELite accounts
More Elite features include flipping the bird to consumers and making tonnes off money by being crazy
So Modern Warfare 3 made over a billion dollars last year and whilst Activision is tight lipped on how much has been made from their Elite service so far. The first two maps for MW3 have been released and the next few already teased but many CoD players have discovered a recent change in the DLC policy. This would have people shelling out more money for their maps but other profiles on the system will be unable to get their content without a second or separate Elite membership.
On the Call of Duty forums, there were 8 pages worth on a single thread of upset players who had their friends and family accounts discontinued or altered with no new maps because they didn't have a secondary account. What's even worse is that the new policy doesn't really work with the terms of services you encounter when you first download the content, which rather plainly states on the loading screen that: "You can use this item on the first Xbox 360 console you downloaded it to. Access to this item will also be granted to all users on this first console."
What would usually happen is that DLC on the 360 would be user agnostic and while your purchase (or any redownloads of purchased items) would be tied to your account, any XBLA games or in-game DLC would be on your HD and playable by any account on the 360, which you own. Microsoft's own digital ownership scheme, mimics real life ownership, so as long as someone has access to the content, you can let someone borrow it from you and play it on their own account.
However, with the CoD Elite service, you cannot do so and require your own user account to access the maps and DLC. For example, a single copy of the game could set you back several $50 a year per account to play on.
Whilst Activision is yet to make a comment on it, I'm sure the more "financially savvy" (See: Greedy) companies will probably adopt this system to make sure each user or member of a console will fork out a piece of dough to make sure they make up for the "lost millions" from pirates.
Not sure how many Call of Duty fans there are on this site, but I'm sure that more often than not there are criticism's spread far and wide about their handling of their Elite service as well as their user base. I do like Call of Duty in theory and in some aspects.
I think if the Black Ops zombie game was just a downloadable title I would buy that and every bit of DLC in existance, but alas we are burdened by terrible storylines, unrelatable characters and some insane visuals. They're not terrible games but their effect on the industry (see: BF3, Medal of Honor, etc.) can bar none see them as a culprit.

IO makes sure AI dialogue isn’t repetitive with a 2,000-page script.
If there’s one thing that most gamers would agree is annoying, it’s repetitive AI chatter. One need only look at the mass of “arrow to the knee jokes” currently swarming the web to get an idea of what can happen when the non-playable characters around you have only a few things to talk about. IO, the developer behind the Hitman franchise, seems determined to avoid this problem with their upcoming Hitman: Absolution.
In an interview with Videogamer, Absolution game director Tor Blystad briefly touched on the depths of dialogue being recorded for the game’s unwitting foes – the AI of the game apparently has a 2,000-page script all to itself. The idea, of course, is to better immerse players in the world they’re attempting to infiltrate; stumbling upon a group of guards mid-joke is always a nice way to break tension and reinforce the reality of a game universe.
We’ll have to wait and see how this script translates into actual in-game encounters, but for now it’s safe to say that IO is on the right track in terms of stopping their guards from becoming Internet memes.
Do you enjoy random conversations in games? Some of my favorite dialogue in gaming came from overheard conversations in Mass Effect 2.

Restrictive copy protection may make it difficult for you to improve your gaming PC without losing access to your games.
Nearly every games publisher builds an install limit into their games. Put simply, when you buy a game, you are authorized to install it on a certain number of machines before you hit the limit and have to buy a new copy. It’s a relatively fair way to ensure you’re not sharing the game with all your friends or up to some other nefarious purpose, and most gamers rarely encounter the install limits on their software.
Ubisoft, however, seems to have taken a different approach to the situation. It seems that their DRM is tuned to detect hardware changes in the system, which means if you upgrade the graphics card in your computer, the game you’re playing will consider the new card to be a second install. Once you’ve made a few upgrades to your computer, you’ll find your Ubisoft games unplayable as you will have “used” all of your available installs.
The issue was discovered by Guru3D, who was attempting to do graphics card comparisons on the new game Anno 2070. Once the game had been activated on three PCs (the install limit), it refused to boot up if the graphics cards in any of the PCs were switched, instead telling Guru3D that his install limit had been reached.
Thinking this block to be nothing more than an error, Guru3D contacted Ubisoft to let them know what was going on. Their response was not encouraging:
“Sorry to disappoint you - the game is indeed restricted to three hardware changes and there simply is no way to bypass that. We also do not have seven copies of the game for you."
So that’s that - if you want to play Ubisoft games, you are limited to three installs. Changing anything about your hardware setup could potentially count as an entirely separate install, and Ubisoft seems completely content to leave it that way.
What do you think of this limited DRM? Is Ubisoft about to end up on the wrong end of yet another DRM fight?

Users are reporting serious problems with the PC version of Saints Row the Third.
2011 has definitely been the year of the buggy launch. We’ve seen Origin issues, an unavailable CoD Elite, Skyrim crashes, an inoperable Arkham City and a barely functioning RAGE. It certainly seems like developers had a hard time putting the final layer of polish on their games this year, and Saints Row the Third is apparently no exception.
Players of the PC version of Saints Row the Third are reporting that the game’s outdoor settings (of which there are many) cause their systems to slow down immensely, making the game nearly unplayable. The glitch only occurs in Saints Row’s open world – you know, the open world that’s supposed to be the entire core of the game.
Volition is working with users to get the issue resolved. They’re taking dxdiag files and talking to people on the official Saints Row and Steam forums in order to get some idea of what’s happening – the problem isn’t limited to AMD or NVIDIA hardware, so it’s going to take them some time to lock down.
While it’s nice to see the company interacting with players and trying to fix the problem, the immense number of broken titles we’ve seen this year is an interesting, and slightly alarming trend.
Do you think developers are getting sloppy?

Despite the Wii’s lack of a patching mechanism, Nintendo has come up with a way to solve the game-breaking bug that’s leaving some Zelda players stranded mid-story.
We talked a bit about the Skyward Sword bug last week. If this is the first you’ve heard of it, here’s what’s been going on: completing certain events in the game may cause it to accidentally lock off the rest of the story, forcing you to start the whole thing over. Last week it was revealed that Nintendo is accepting Wii consoles for repair in Japan, but it looks like the games developer has actually come up with a method for patching their title.
In Japan, Nintendo has just added a channel to the Wii home screen titled the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Restoration Channel. The entire goal of this new channel is fixing the bug and making your save playable again, and reports indicate that it’s been working.
Unfortunately, for some users, the special restoration channel only repairs files on the main Wii memory. Players that saved their Skyward Sword data to an SD card will still have to send the card in for restoration, unless Nintendo finds some way to update the patch channel.
There’s still no word on how Nintendo is going to address this issue in the west, but if the restoration channel proves successful, it’s very likely it will be hitting a Wii near you very soon. Not too shabby for a company that up until now had no way to update or patch a game.
Let’s just hope they learn from this mistake and build the Wii U with these types of issues in mind.

The developer wants players to know that issues with Batman will be resolved as quickly as possible.
Batman: Arkham City has had its fair share of issues since launch, but is practically unplayable on some computer systems thanks to a DX11 problem. The game apparently has some sort of issue operating in a DX11 environment, making the frame rate stutter so badly that there’s not much you can do besides stare at the computer in frustration.
For the time being, you can open the settings menu and drop your DirectX install down to 9, but that’s certainly not the ideal for gamers that have invested in their systems and are serious about the way games look and play.
Rocksteady is well aware of the issue, and is currently working on getting a patch ready for launch. There’s no word on exactly when players can expect to bash in criminal heads in full DirectX 11 glory, so for now everyone will just have to play the waiting game.

The latest iteration in the zombie-killing, survival horror franchise gets an official update and a few collectors’ edition goodies.
If you love avoiding the effects of the T-virus, exploring scary environments filled with zombies, and generally doing all things Resident Evil, you’re in luck – the next game in the series is headed your way on March 12, 2012. Capcom confirmed the release date late this week, and with it, some details regarding what fans can expect from the game and its collector’s edition.
Raccoon City features six different playable characters, a marked change from Resident Evils of the past. Gamers who pre-order from Best Buy, Amazon or GameStop will receive a special costume for all six characters in addition to a set of weapons specifically reserved for those who plunk their money down early – useful considering this specific iteration of the franchise will focus more on action and less on survival.
Here’s what you’ll see in the collector’s edition:
• Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City
• Steelbook with exclusive art
• Stylized foil sleeve
• Umbrella Security Service and Spec Ops Field Unit embroidered patches
• All eight bonus weapons
Operation Raccoon City will hit shelves on March 20th, 2012, but only for PS3 and Xbox 360 owners. While a PC version of the game has been confirmed, there is no official release date available.

Art books, soundtracks and armor sets mark the big gets in the fighter’s newest collector’s edition.
Collector’s editions have been light in the past, with many developers dropping a special DLC code or some other trifle in the box and calling it a day. Not so for Namco, who have just revealed the details of the Soul Calibur V Collector’s Edition package. Fans of the series will find plenty to enjoy in the CE, which hits shelves January 31st.
The collector’s edition comes complete with a soundtrack for the game, an artbook of the characters and environments, and an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette. Collector’s edition owners will also have the advantage of downloading special armor sets, titled “Dark Knight” and “White Knight” respectively.
What’s really cool about this particular collector’s edition is the design – the box is engineered to resemble an old book, and it opens in the same way a book would to reveal its contents. This, in addition to the recent revelation that Assassin’s Creed’s Ezio would indeed be a playable character in V, make the game even more interesting from the perspective of a wary Soul Calibur player.
I mean, I love the games, but it does feel quite a bit like the same thing over and over again. It would take some serious innovation or a particularly cool collector’s edition to sell me another Soul Calibur, and Namco certainly seems to be on the right track. I’m excited to see how Ezio fares, although his addition may be lights out for some of the cheaper characters in the game.
Are you ready for another Soul Calibur? It doesn’t seem like IV came out all that long ago.

The beautiful iOS RPG was a smash hit, but will its visuals hold up when displayed on a screen larger than a few inches?
Infinity Blade, built on the Unreal Engine, was an incredible example of the possibilities of mobile gaming. Its rich colors, complex storyline and hours of gameplay led it to become an addition to millions of iPhone home screens, as gamers flocked to what many considered the first true gaming experience for iOS gamers.
Thanks to the huge success the game has experience on iOS platforms, it looks like a whole new group of gamers are getting a chance to explore its fantasy world. Epic Games has just announced that Infinity Blade FX will start showing up in arcade form at Dave and Busters locations around the world on October 28th.
The game boasts many of the same features seen in the original iOS version, with a single player mode and multiplayer challenges. There’s no word on whether you’ll be able to use your iOS device in sync with the arcade game to create a sort of augmented iPhone experience, but either way you’ll be able to jump directly into the story via the in-house arcade machine.
In other Epic Games news, Infinity Blade 2 is coming exclusively to the iPhone 4S later this year, with the launch tentatively scheduled for December 31st. We’re keeping a close eye on Epic’s news feed, so we’ll let you know if anything changes.

We broke news early in the week about Nightwing being included as a playable character. Now you can get a sneak peek of what he actually looks like in-game.
A few days ago, an updated trophy list for “Batman: Arkham City” revealed that Nightwing would be available as a playable character. If you’re curious to find out what the original Robin looks like in the game, your wait is over, as we’ve located a few in-game shots of the character model. Nothing fancy and no gameplay footage, but enough to get an idea of what the character might look like in action.
The screenshots are apparently marked as alpha tests, meaning they’re not final and the look could dramatically improve before the release of whatever content pack actually unlocks Nightwing for play.
“Arkham City” is set for release on October 18th, and has already earned a 10 out of 10 score in a preliminary review. Players can take the role of either Catwoman or Batman as they work to stop yet a nefarious plot set into motion by the Two-Face. The game is noted as being somewhat darker in tone when compared to the original, with Kevin Conroy (voice of Batman) comparing the villains to what we saw in the animated “Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker.”
As noted, Nightwing will not be available in the basic game and will instead come as part of a downloadable content pack. If you want to play as Nightwing in “Arkham City,” you’re probably still a couple of months away from having access to the character and the trophies he unlocks.
Is everyone excited about “Arkham City?” What do you think is more interesting – playing as Batman and smashing up bad guys, or experiencing new game elements as Robin, Catwoman and Nightwing?
