Microsoft Dismisses Xbox.com Security Flaw

The gaming giant responds to claims of weak security on its official website.

Late last week, we broke news over a potential security flaw in the design of the Xbox.com website. Jason Coutee, a hacked Live user and network infrastructure manager, notice that the Xbox.com login apparatus will allow for infinite incorrect attempts, opening the site up to brute force password scripts. While a captcha appears after eight tries, it can be dismissed by clicking one of the links on the site, and you can begin attempts anew with the same Live email.

Some gaming outlets, QJ included, pondered whether this loophole has anything to do with the recent spate of Live hacks. Microsoft seems to have been offended by the suggestion, and issued a stern statement earlier this morning. Calling the brute forcing issue outlined an “industry-wide issue,” Microsoft claimed that security is their highest priority and there is no “loophole” in the way their website works. It’s a boilerplate response from a company on the defensive – your basic “we are working on security, your information is safe, no hackers to be found here!”

Coutee responded to the statement, acknowledging that brute forcing is indeed a real issue for everyone, but that Microsoft had also apparently tightened up their backend security without making any visible changes to the website. The site no longer allows for infinite attempts, and instead stops responding to requests after the 20th submission. Microsoft clearly thought enough of the issue to change the way the website works, despite their claims of no loophole existing.

Hacked Live User Reveals Xbox.com Weakness

Despite Microsoft’s insistence on the contrary, the recent spate of hacker attacks may have something to do with their official website.

We’ve seen this Xbox Live hacking story play out over the last few weeks, and we’ve seen the same arguments thrown up: Hacked users insist they didn’t do anything wrong, and Microsoft insists that Xbox Live is completely secure. Commenters then either bash hacked players for falling victim to phishing attempts, or cast aspersions on Microsoft for covering up a potential security threat.

As of today, we’re starting to see a few more details as to what may actually be causing the problem. Jason Coutee is a network infrastructure manager who also happened to have his Xbox Live account stolen and looted for 8,000 MS Points. Coutee conducted his own investigation (as is becoming the norm) and found a gaping hole in the security measures found on Xbox.com.

Apparently, Xbox.com allows for an infinite amount of incorrect login attempts. No matter how many times you get a password wrong, you can continue trying as long as you’re willing to enter a Captcha code. This means hackers have the option of brute-forcing account passwords, since there’s no consequence for a series of incorrect entries.

There’s naturally no word from Microsoft regarding the issue, and it’s unclear if this is the primary cause of the recent account hacks. However, it’s still a considerable security concern for a website that contains sensitive personal data and credit card information.

We’ll keep you updated as the story develops – we’re expecting some sort of response from Microsoft soon.

Video: Portal 2 running on Kinect

The hacks for Kinect keep coming, and they are getting bolder by the minute. The next non-Kinect game we have a video of running on Microsoft's motion technology for the Xbox 360 (and later on PC) is Valve's Portal 2.

The hack was performed by Brad Cooley, using the FAAST toolkit. Getting Portal 2 running on Kinect, you will see on the video how he uses the motion control for aim and fire actions, as well as moving forward and backward.

The video may not seem particularly brilliant, but what it does exemplify is that Portal 2 can in fact run pretty well on Kinect. It could be a good suggestion thrown Valve's way since the Kinect will be headed off to the PC as well, anyway.

Then again, they will be releasing the Razer Hydra later this summer, which should also provide PC gamers a chance to play Portal 2 via motion control.
