Watch Out for this Shitty Pokémon Rip-Off

Game cloning strikes again in Apple’s iTunes Store.

It goes without saying that the great majority of games on the iTunes Store are rip-offs of games that came before them. Even those titles that aren’t blatant copies (Zynga!) borrow mechanics from older games that the mobile populace may never have heard of. However, there’s a very thin line between copying mechanics and outright plagiarism, especially when the copying is done explicitly to scam customers.

Apple is normally on the lookout for stuff like this, but they seem to have dropped the ball when it comes to Pokemon Yellow, a game released on the iTunes Store on February 17. The game, featuring artwork from the Pokémon series and claiming to be “just like the original,” is nothing more than a sneaky cash grab by an unscrupulous game developer.

The app apparently does nothing more than open and crash, and certainly doesn’t contain anything remotely close to the original Pokémon Yellow for the Game Boy. The app developer has even gone so far as to generate fake reviews for the game, one of which claims, “Just like the original. Only better because you can play it on the most intuitive device ever - the iPhone!”

It’s all bullshit folks, so save your $0.99. Now that gaming news sites have caught a whiff of the fraud, it’s only a matter of time before Apple pulls the app.

Still, one has to wonder how the thing got through in the first place.

On Shelves this Week: November 27 – December 3, 2011

Most of the big stuff has come out already, but there are still plenty of new games to play in this week’s edition of “On Shelves.”

It looks like the crazy holiday release schedule is finally slowing down, with most of the major releases already on shelves and waiting to be picked up. But the games industry is an ever-moving beast, and there are still quite a few games scheduled for release in the upcoming week.

Who knows, some of them might even be good! But when an iPhone game is the biggest launch of the week, don’t expect any miracles.

That’s pretty much it for this week. There are a few other minor titles coming out, but honestly Infinity Blade II is the only thing on this list I had even heard of before today. GameSpot’s list is missing box art for 2/3s of the list.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is 'more crafted' than Left 4 Dead

Randy Pitchford is selling Aliens: Colonial Marines to the hilt, even comparing it to the blockbuster zombie game of Valve, Left 4 Dead, saying that their game is definitely "more crafted" than that one.

Said Pitchford, "I think parts of it feel a little like [that], but Left 4 Dead was very dependent upon the game system. There wasn't any real story telling or character development or anything at all to do in Left 4 Dead other than to run to the exit and not die along the way.

Aliens: Colonial Marines is a much more crafted and cinematic experience. It also has a deeper meta-game where there is some value to gaining experience and growing the capability of your character overtime. Left 4 Dead is a great thing to think about when considering how it works as both a single player and co-operative game where you're playing against hordes of fearless, death-dealing enemies. But it's not really a good example when you think about a crafted, narrative experience or when you think about how meta-growth game can make playing your favourite missions again really fun and compelling."

In defense of Left 4 Dead (I am a huge fan, obviously), I don't think it ever promised a meta-experience of gaming. As far as its basic plot is concerned, I think it delivered on what it set out to do: put you in the position of someone out to survive at all costs. And really, when you have a horde of zombies after you, you don't have much time to philosophize about character growth. You just shoot away. It's the basic tenet of survival, and one that L4D unfrivolously delivers.

But anyway, if Aliens: Colonial Marines is "more crafty", then it should be a fun game to look out for.

The game is also promising to answer questions about the movie, so if you're looking forward to that, then it really should be a must-buy/ must-play title. Gearbox also takes much pride in the fact that they've provided gamers with a lot of freedom in the game.

Robin trailer for Batman: Arkham City 'imminent', no more character reveals

Rocksteady's done coming out with new characters for Batman: Arkham City. The developer has confirmed that they won't be announcing any more new folks joining in on the game, although they did say that you can all look forward to a trailer of Robin in action sometime soon.

Sarah May Wellock, Arkham City's Community Manager, wrote: "There are NO more character reveals!!! Robin trailer is imminent through the relevant trailers."

As to when that Robin trailer will be coming out, we've yet to know for certain. From the sound of it, though, it shouldn't be for too long.

It's likely that it will look something like the one tht came out for The Joker, though. Batman: Arkham City had its release dates confirmed the other day - October 18th for US, 19th for Australia, and 21st for Europe - with the PC version taking a definitive blow with a delay.

Capcom prefers to prioritize Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD localization

Fans of the HD version of Monster Hunter Portable 3rd will surely be glad to know that Capcom wants to put its localization on top of to-do list over everything else.

Of course, what makes it a double cause for joy is that implicit in that statement is that they will, although much later, also be dealing with the localization of the other titles in the series. This was the revelation made by Christian Svensson over at their official forums, Capcom-Unity.

"Soon is a relative term," he said when asked whether or not there will be any new MH titles coming to the North American region, "but I would say that Western MH fans have lots to be excited about for the future. Admittedly I do hope we can find a way to get P3 HD Westward somehow sooner than those other things but as I've mentioned, it's an open item."

The HD for MHP 3rd came out in Japan just a couple of weeks back in August to massive success, sitting on top of the Japanese charts.

Analysts: New Monster Hunter to be announced at TGS

The Tokyo Game Show won't be happening till a couple of months from now, but already, analysts are chiming in on what they think will be the major announcements then.

Mizuho Securities reportedly expects a new Monster Hunter title to be unveiled by Capcom at this year's Tokyo gaming event. Because of this expectation, Mizuho has apparently raised its target Capcom stockprice. Whereas previously they held JP¥2,200, now they've upped it to ¥2,600.

Mizuho did not specify the basis of this analysis, or how sure they are that the announcement will be on a new Monster Hunter title. We're about to find out, though, so just hang in there.

No worries, because you soon will get a chance to see for yourself. It's just been confirmed via press release that Capcom and Sony are partnering up to give you a double dose of their respective brands.

For their Monster Hunter Portable 3rd-Bravia collaboration, the following details have been revealed:

Bravia sets at 400 television retailers will show a MHP 3rd HD Version promotion video from August through October.

Upcoming installments of the Monster Hunter Festa 2011 tournament event will allow visitors to sample MHP 3rd HD Version on Bravia sets.

MHP 3rd producer Ryozo Tsujimoto and director Yasunori Ichinose will share recommended Bravia settings for the game on August 25.

The development staff have been using Bravia as the game's development monitor.

Sony will release an original MHP 3rd HD Version app for its Appli Cast widget service. This will be available starting 8/25. The app will have information about download quests, recommended monitor settings and monsters.

Oh, and just in case it's slipped your mind, Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD will be among the first batch of games for the PS3 remakes of PSP games under the PSP Remaster series.

Fans campaign for Mega Man Legends 3

When Capcom announced earlier this week that they will be cancelling the development of Mega Man Legends 3 altogether, we knew fans wouldn't be taking it lying down.

Fans - currently at 17,000+ strong - have gone to Facebook to campaign for their well-loved video game hero.

Their game, ultimately, is to get the attention of Capcom and convince them to get back on the drawing table with Mega Man Legends 3, as soon as they hit 100,000 supporters.

Expressed the fan page, "This group is here to show Capcom that the Mega Man Legends 3 Project is still supported by its fans, despite the project's cancellation. In addition to sending a message, feel free to post any photos or artwork of the project here to save them for posterity's sake, including anything that you personally contributed to the Devroom."

Well they do sound very serious, most certainly. Capcom justified their reason for cancelling MML3 Project for the 3DS, saying that they didn't feel the project quite met their criteria for release.

Here's hoping the fans do get something out of this campaign. If not, well, there's that new graphic novel series coming out for the franchise.

Kojima Prod talks the 're-imagining' of MGS 1 in HD

We just might be seeing Metal Gear Solid 1 in HD in the future, thanks to Kojima Productions' desire to make it so. Creative producer Yoshikazu Matsuhana declared this, speaking with Eurogamer at E3 earlier this week.

The original title of the classic franchise did not make it to the cut of the HD collection coming out later, and the producer explained that it was because game one is just too old.

"Obviously, we wanted to include it and make it a complete collection," he said. "However, as you know, Metal Gear Solid 1 was for the PSone. It has a very, very low polygon count."

He furthered, "While at the time the game was something new and refreshing, just bringing it as is into HD probably wouldn't have that much meaning to us. We're doing two and three with a certain work flow where the goal is to take that game, preserve it and introduce it to a new generation. We can't really take that approach with Metal Gear Solid 1 because it's very dated at this point."

The limitations may be keeping them from fully embarking on an HD-fication of MGS1 right onw, but he reassures that they would want to get it done at some point in time.

"If we were going to do Metal Gear Solid 1 we'd want to take more time with it. Not just up-res the textures, not just make things look pretty and polished, but go back and tweak some of the gameplay, tweak the story to update things and do it properly. Not just a re-master but a re-imagining almost.

Metal Gear Solid HD Collection was recently confirmed for the PS3 and Xbox 360, which is set to include the HD versions of MGS 2, 3 and Peace Walker. The other MGS title waiting in the wings is Rising, and Kojima is promising "big news" on it come Winter.

A couple of days back, we saw what Penguin will most probably look like in Batman: Arkham City. Well, that probability has now been confirmed into reality as we have here the first official images for the waddler going up against the Caped Crusader.

Of course, as Oswald Cobblepot is a man with "delusions of grandeur", his outfit speaks just as well of his personality. We'll be seeing more of the Penguin and his gnarly fashion sense, along with the other villains of the city when Batman: Arkham City launches in North America on October 18, Australia on October 19, and Europe on October 21, 2011.
