EA clarifies statements about SimCity’s online requirements. The news? Not exactly good.
Yesterday we reported on SimCity and its apparently always-on DRM. In the story, we noted that an EA rep had confirmed that the game would demand a persistent internet connection in order to run. According to Maxis, the online requirement is the result of the increased connectivity of SimCity and its focus on multi-player regions. However, recent information has been made available that further clarifies what players can expect from SimCity and its always-on DRM.
EA has released a bit more information regarding SimCity and online play, and it turns out that you won’t have to be on the internet in order to keep your game running. However, you will need to be on the internet to start the game, and you’ll still need to log into an Origin account to get the game to launch.
So, to summarize: If you want to play SimCity, you have to be connected to the internet and signed into Origin. Once the game is running, you can keep playing even if your internet connection shuts off. It’s better than the type of DRM protection we’ve seen with companies like Ubisoft, but it’s still far from great.
What do you think of EA’s updated SimCity DRM plan?

The company loses $2.03 billion in Q3, marking its fourth year of consecutive losses.
Things don’t look too great over at Sony this morning. The company has announced its earnings figures for the last quarter in 2011, and numbers are down, big time. Sony, as a whole, posted a net loss of around $2 billion – a 17.4% drop from the same quarter last year.
It wasn’t all black clouds over at Sony, however. Sony Consumer Products and Services, a.k.a. the PlayStation wing of the company, lost a little less - $1.09 billion. PS3 sales went up, but not enough to prevent the company from taking a pretty large hit. Unfortunately, sales numbers for the PS Vita were not provided.
Sony listed a few reasons for the revenue tumble, including a difficult market, tough exchange rates and the floods that occurred in Thailand. The company has also recently appointed Kaz Hirai, the man behind the PlayStation brand, as its new CEO, so perhaps investors are hoping he can turn things around.
As usual, it’s important to note that a company posting a loss simply means they made less money during a particular quarter than the same quarter in the previous year. It doesn’t mean that Sony isn’t making a profit – the company is still raking in money hand over fist. All these figures indicate is that Sony could be in for some trouble if they’re unable to reverse the downward tumble.

The new Coliseum mode pits players against old adversaries.
Are you enjoying Final Fantasy XIII-2? It’s been out for almost 24 hours, which means it’s time for DLC announcements! And Square Enix has not disappointed, detailing their upcoming content plans for the brand new RPG.
Starting February 7, FFXIII-2 players will be able to participate in downloadable Coliseum battles. Each battle pits you against a villain from a previous Final Fantasy game, and if you’re successful in your challenge, you can bring the defeated foe in to your party. Square Enix is also promising future DLC content that expands on the narrative of the game.
The first battle will contain Lightning and Sergeant Amodar. There’s no information on future battles, but here’s hoping Sephiroth makes an appearance (can you imagine him in your party?!).
Are you going to check out any of FFxIII-2’s DLC?

Everything the PS3 version was, and more.
We talked a few weeks ago about Mortal Kombat making its way to Vita, but we didn’t have much in the way of details. Thanks to IGN, however, we are now able to delve a little more deeply into what exactly Vita owners can expect from this return to the bloody tournament.
Mortal Kombat on the Vita is based on 2011’s PS3 reboot of the franchise, and will contain all four of the DLC characters as well as Kratos. The Vita version will also contain all DLC outfits and fatalities. The game will play much in the same way as the PS3 version, with a couple of Vita-specific tweaks. For one, you can tap the special meter to instantly unleash a special attack, or use the screen to perform fatalities in lieu of the touchpad. In some of the game’s 150 new missions, you may find yourself swiping the screen to wipe away blood or knocking missiles down with a tap.
The game also includes a few new maps that don’t address the Vita controls – they were developed for the console version but weren’t polished in time for release. Overall, this version of Mortal Kombat is essentially a GOTY repackaging of 2011’s title, with more features, more characters and more levels.
Are you stoked on Vita Mortal Kombat?

Bikinis are coming to Soul Calibur. At least Namco is being honest.
Enjoying Soul Calibur V? Of course not – it doesn’t hit shelves until January 31. But just because the game hasn’t been released yet doesn’t mean there can’t be DLC, right? Right. Namco Bandai has announced the first round of Soul Calibur V DLC, set to land at the same time as the game’s European release on February 3.
So what’s in this first batch of DLC, you ask? According to Namco Bandai, the DLC contains “exotic costumes.” Loosely translated, this means face paint, wigs and yes, bikinis. While it seems a little ridiculous to introduce bikinis into a fighting game, this is, after all, Soul Calibur. It’s good to see Namco embracing its target demographic.
This pack is the first of three set for February release, with the second landing February 14 and the third landing February 28. The next two updates contain accessories like clothing, masks and “breast plates,” and all three updates are packed with some classic Soul Calibur music. Each DLC pack is priced at 160 MS Points/ €1.99.
What do you think of day one DLC? It doesn’t seem so terrible when it’s purely aesthetic items.
Also, are you planning on buying any bikinis?

Find out what evils lurk in the special edition of Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.
It goes without saying that if you’re releasing a popular game, you almost have to create an additional collector’s edition with some extra goodies. This is certainly the case for The Witcher 2, which is scheduled to hit the Xbox 360 on April 17. The Dark Edition, which runs a relatively fair $79.99, is packed with the accoutrements we’ve come to expect from collector’s edition boxes.
Here’s what you’ll get with the Dark Edition version of the game:
World map
Quest book
Making-of DVD
Soundtrack
Stickers
Art book
Wolf head medallion
Pretty standard fare for a CE. Art book, soundtrack, some sort of game-related trinket. But that’s not all! Depending on where you pre-order the Dark Edition, you’ll also receive some of the following loot:
Comic book
Two wolf head t-shirts
Medallion keychain
Xbox Live Avatars
Avatar pet
No clue on what items will be available from what retailers, so stay tuned and we’ll update you as details emerge. In the meantime, are you planning on picking up Witcher 2 for the Xbox?

Retailers can’t keep the 3DS on shelves, but Nintendo is still doing worse now than in years before.
Nintendo released its official numbers today, and things don’t look too good. Despite the fact that the Nintendo 3DS outsold all other systems combined last week (in Japan, of course), Nintendo is still reporting major losses for the last quarter. According to earnings reports released by the company, Nintendo lost $623 million between the months of April and December 2011.
The company doesn’t seem confident in the near future, revising its original forecast of $580 million in losses through March 2012 to $838. Nintendo noted that while Nintendo 3DS hardware is moving at a much higher rate, the massive price cut they dropped on the system is contributing to their financial ails.
In one last bit of bad news, Nintendo revised its original sales predictions for the 3DS, Wii, and DS dropping expected 3DS and Wii sales by two million each, and DS sales by about 500,000. The decreased sales projections have been taken into account for the new loss predictions for 2012.
It’s worth noting that while Nintendo reports these numbers as a “loss,” all it means is that the company made less money in a particular quarter than they did in the same quarter of the previous year. Nintendo is still churning out massive profits, and the company is far from being financially unstable. It’s just the way companies go about reporting their finances.
We’ll keep you posted as other companies release their sales numbers and financial forecasts. 2011 was likely a tough year for everyone, with console hardware aging and rumors of the next-gen on the horizon.

One sharp-witted Xbox Live user tracked down her hacked account, and in the process revealed that the problem may be bigger than Microsoft is letting on.
The Xbox Live hacking scandal has been rolling through games media for the last few weeks, with Microsoft continually confirming that everything is under control, and users continually confirming the opposite. Today we have the latest bit of news from the debacle, one that indicates the problem being way outside of Microsoft’s ability to manage.
Here’s the breakdown: A gamer had her Live account compromised. The account was then used to purchase thousands of MP against her wishes, so she contacted Microsoft and let them know what was happening. Microsoft said the account would be suspended, but when she turned on her system it auto-logged into the account. Microsoft’s response? They said they were “unable” to lock the account. What?!
After a little bit of sleuthing through her friends list and messages, she discovered that her account had been sold to another user via an illicit website. This site currently has around 1,900 hacked Xbox Live accounts up for sale, with prices that start around $20. There’s still no information on how exactly accounts are being hacked, but the discovery does help show what happens after the hack has been completed:
Thief uses stolen account to buy Xbox Live Family Pack
Thief attaches new account to Xbox Live Family Pack
Thief transfers points from stolen account to new accounts
Thief sells new accounts at auction
Microsoft is continuing to deny that the issue lies in Xbox Live, and EA has naturally said the same thing about their security measures. However, it’s hard to believe that this many players would just suddenly fall victim to phishing attacks.
What do you think is going on with Xbox Live? Microsoft cover-up or user error?

The games company scrambles to repair the latest Zelda title’s game-breaking glitch.
We talked last week about The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’s game-breaking bug. If you missed the article and can’t be bothered to click the link in the previous sentence, here’s the basic gist: If you complete certain actions in a certain order, your game will essentially become stuck between events and impossible to complete. This bug crops up about 30 hours into the game, and if you hit it, you have to start over from your last save.
Unfortunately for Nintendo Wii owners, there’s really no such thing as a “last save.” Unless you painstakingly double your saves between the Wii and an SD card, there’s no way to recover old saves, which means you’re going to end up starting Skyward Sword from the beginning. Nintendo, being without a method to patch games, advised players on how to avoid this bug on their official site.
Now, the company is offering to patch the save files and repair the problem, with one catch: In order to take advantage of this offer, you’ll have to send your SD card or your Wii in to Nintendo for servicing. The process takes at least a week, though the company is expecting longer waits thanks to the holiday rush.
If mailing Nintendo your Wii doesn’t sound like something you want to do, the company is hard at work on a downloadable patch. There’s no infrastructure for Nintendo to deliver patches of this nature, so it could be a while before the whole thing gets sorted out. But, at least they’re working on it. It’s worth noting that these solutions are only available for Japanese players; we’re still awaiting word on what will happen for us in the west.
Have you had any issues with Skyward Sword? Would you send your Wii in for a broken game save, or just start over?

Remember when Nintendo promised you some free games? Well, they’re officially on the way.
If you’re unfamiliar with the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program, here’s some backstory: First, the Nintendo DS was released to the general public for the astounding price of eight million U.S. gold bars. After a couple of months of terrible sales, Nintendo opted to drop the price to a much more agreeable $169.99. And, to help soothe the minds of those that purchase the handheld at the original price point, the company promised to give every early-adopter ten free Game Boy Advance games.
The release of those games was delayed a couple of times while Nintendo got everything figured out, but they’ve officially announced a real-life release date as well as a list of the games to be released. Look for your Ambassador titles on December 16 – if you live in Japan or Europe. There has been no confirmation from Nintendo’s North American branch quite yet, but it’s safe to assume the games will launch on the same day unless we’re told otherwise.
Here are the ten games you can pick up on Friday:
• F-Zero
• Super Mario Advance 3
• The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap
• Fire Emblem Seima no Kouseki
• Kirby & the Amazing Mirror
• Mario Kart Advance
• Mario vs. Donkey Kong
• Metroid Fusion
• Wario Land Advance
• Made in Wario
Pretty good titles, if you ask me. They could have given us ten terrible games, but instead seem to have dropped a “greatest hits” GBA list. Nice work, Nintendo.
Are you in the Ambassador program? Was it worth the extra cash?

In news that should surprise exactly no one, the series producer confirms that another “stealthy” Metal Gear game will eventually be released.
There’s been a lot of Metal Gear Solid talk recently, what with rumors of MGS5 and the VGA unveiling of the trailer for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance (dumbest title of all time). While the first game has been confirmed to still be in the theoretical phase, and the second isn’t exactly a follow-up to any other Metal Gear game, fans of the main franchise will be happy to learn that they will eventually get their wish – a new Metal Gear game based on stealth and cunning.
Happy, but not surprised. Everyone knows that Metal Gear Solid 5 will come out someday, though Hideo Kojima’s cryptic quote only indicates that a sequel is coming sometime in the future. It’s about as cagey as a response can be, but Kojima likely needs to play this close to the chest until he has something official to announce.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance is not a part of the main MGS canon, and is intended to simply be looked upon as a fun spin-off. Kojima noted that the original vision for that specific game was pretty close to what Platinum Games has come up with, so hopefully that will calm some of the hardcore fans unsure about where exactly their franchise is heading.
In the meantime, look for Metal Gear Solid 5 somewhere at some time. At least we know it’s coming, right?

In Japan, the Nintendo 3DS just smashed its own sales records, fueled largely by a hot new title.
Monster Hunter is a pretty big deal in Japan. It’s also a pretty big deal here in the west, but in Japan, it’s a full-fledged phenomenon similar to Pokémon or Call of Duty. Essentially, it’s a must-have. The latest entry in the franchise, Monster Hunter 3G, has raked in an impressive 471,055 units sold in just the first week of release.
Thanks to this (relatively) massive launch, Nintendo saw sales of its 3DS handheld go straight through the roof. The company reports selling 371,326 units in the week of Monster Hunter 3G’s release – the best sales week on record since the device hit shelves. To date, the 3DS has moved over three million units, despite the fact that people seem dedicated to shaming it as a niche peripheral.
On interesting fact – the “week” of sales data for Monster Hunter 3G only represents the first two days of actual data. When the full numbers for the week are released, they’re sure to be much higher. In the meantime, it looks like Satoru Iwata can relax a little bit about the future of his company. Assuming, of course, that Shigeru Miyamoto doesn’t make any more unplanned announcements.

The director of one of Sony’s most beloved franchises isn’t a huge fan of where online play is headed.
Did you play Battlefield 3? Did you have a good time setting up your Origin account, logging into Battlelog, registering your online pass and joining the gun club or whatever? My guess is no. At best, it was an inconvenience, and at worst, it was a game-breaking problem. Yet online passes are quickly becoming the norm, showing up in games like Uncharted 3, Dead Space 2 and Need for Speed.
Online passes protect the industry from used game sales – if you buy a used game and the online code has already been registered, the only option is buying a new code directly from the publisher. This relatively recent development has plenty of gamers up in arms, and it looks like it’s not just gamers that think online passes are a bad idea – some developers are getting on the train as well.
David Jaffe, director of the newest installment of the Twisted Metal franchise, definitely doesn’t support the online pass model. His theory is simple: The online pass may protect first-round sales, but it’s not worth losing potential fans that don’t want to take a chance on buying the game new.
By letting gamers pick a used copy of the game up at a lower price, Jaffe figures that more people will get a chance to experience the game and become fans, which in turn translates to bigger sales next time around. Note that Jaffe isn’t against the idea of the online pass because he thinks it’s stupid or inconvenient, but because he believes it can negatively affect the franchise’s bottom line.
Jaffe also noted that the final decision is up to Sony, so there’s no real indication on whether the new Twisted Metal will have an online pass or not. Based on the company’s recent actions, I’d say the most likely answer is “yes, totally.”
What do you think of Jaffe’s arguments against online passes?

A recent dev diary drops a ton of information regarding the next installment in the “chop down trees, plant flowers” franchise.
Animal Crossing is a strange game. On the surface, you wouldn’t think it would be that interesting – get a mortgage, run errands, talk to neighbors and do a ton of landscaping. But something about the game’s cute design and free-roaming nature make it appealing, and Animal Crossing has become one of Nintendo’s biggest exclusive franchises.
Animal Crossing fans are waiting for Animal Crossing 3DS, but details were scant regarding what to expect. However, the developers have just posted a very long, very boring diary that has a few interesting tidbits scattered through it.
Here’s the important stuff:
In Animal Crossing 3DS, you play as the mayor of your city
You can choose what to put in your town, or what not to put in your town
You can paint your house and re-upholster your furniture with custom designs
Pants and shirts confirmed!
There are a few other small details in the video, if you have the time to sit through it and you’re an Animal Crossing fan. For example, Tom Nook will return, but this time as a respectable real estate dealer instead of the man to which you are an indentured servant.

Fresh from the rumor mill – Xenoblade may be heading west, but only as a GameStop exclusive.
Gamers have been clamoring for a North American release of the epic Xenoblade Chronicles, but up until recently, Nintendo had been pretty firm in their refusal to bring the game overseas. As of today, however, the future of the title seems to be in flux, with NeoGAF reporting that Chronicles may in fact see a North American release, albeit as a GameStop exclusive.
The story broke as the result of a leaked internal screenshot from a GameStop store, and the chain has long been known for guessing/predicting release dates both correctly and very, very incorrectly. That being said, Nintendo seems to be stoking the flames of rumor, and has recently begun to add Xenoblade images to its Facebook page.
There has been no official confirmation from either GameStop or Nintendo, so we’ll just have to wait and see how this whole thing plays out. If the information does turn out to be true, look for Xenoblade Chronicles to hit shelves near you in April of 2012.

Whatever it is, it’s definitely Zerg-like. I count at least four legs, a massive (probably ugly) head, and lots of spiky bits, so it should fit right in with existing Zerg units. As with the Terran reveal, we don’t have any details on what exactly the unit does or how it will be used in battle. Blizzard will likely release this info once all three silhouettes are available, and even then you should expect a wait.
If there’s one thing Blizzard loves, it’s drawing out announcements. Heart of the Swarm is headed your way in 2012, but there’s no official release date and Blizzard hasn’t shied away from game delays in the past. HoTS revolves around Kerrigan and the Zerg, and features an all-new single player campaign in addition to additional multiplayer features.
Is this marketing campaign working? Are you getting excited for a little SCII?

A deluge of news, reviews, gameplay videos and other Rage-related content storm the gaming press as the game hits store shelves in North America.
There are roughly ten new “things” coming out today, if you count games and various downloadable content packs. “Dark Souls,” a new “Spider-Man” title, “NBA 2K12” and “Orcs Must Die” are all making their debuts, but you surely wouldn’t know it if you followed the traditional gaming press. Looking over my Twitter feed (follow me! @mikedotfoster), it looks like the games media has settled in on their big title of the week: “Rage.”
So, to save you some time wading through the pile of words that have already been written on the subject, I figured I’d let you know what people seem to be feeling in regard to what is apparently the biggest title of the week. Here goes nothing!
PC Gamer calls the game “simple, satisfying” fun, praises the enemy A.I. and says that while the game is still very linear, the smooth controls and exciting action make it interesting all the way through. They rated it an 84 out of 100.
IGN says that “Rage” is one of the best-looking games ever made, boasts “excellent shooting sequences” and speaks positively on the single-player campaign as well as cooperative missions. Staying true to form, they give the game 8.5 out of 10.
Game Trailers calls the cinema writing “rote,” criticizes the lack of an overarching plot to guide the player and notes the anti-climactic ending, but looks positively on the well-realized characters. Gameplay and graphics win the day, earning the title 9 out of 10.
GamePro is exuberant about the vehicle sequences in the game but notes hit detection and graphics problems on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. They also note an anti-climactic finish but say that the smart A.I and vivid environments more than make up for story problems and minor bugs. Four stars.
If you’re keeping track, it looks like “Rage” is a fun, well-designed experience with great graphics but not much of a story. Most reviewers also noted that while the game is billed as an RPG, there isn’t much in the way of open-world exploration and true RPG fans may find the game limiting. Regardless, “Rage” is certainly sounding like a strong buy, with minor issues that will likely be patched up later.
Did you pick up “Rage” today? How are you enjoying it so far?

Looks like Sony is definitely ready to launch their PlayStation 3D Display to the public. Although they're still keeping the official release date a secret, they have already opened it up for pre-order placements.
If you are interested, then Amazon is the online retailer for you. They're pegged the PlayStation 3D Display, bundled up with MotorStorm Apocalypse, for US$ 499.99. If you're balking at that price tag, though, listen up because they're not done throwing in the treats. On top of MotorStorm Apocalypse, they're also throwing in Resistance 3, absolutely free!
Noted Amazon, "This offer will be extended to all existing pre-orders. Offer valid when shipped and sold by Amazon.com. Amazon reserves the right to change or terminate this promotion at any time."
Sony's been making their promotional rounds for the PlayStation 3D Display, and they're not being shy in claiming that there will definitely be "a lot of snazziness" in it. It's being rumored for a November release, and if Resistance 3 will be bundled for free in this Amazon offer, then maybe there is some truth to it, although the placeholder date claims the PlayStation 3D Display is coming out December 31, 2011.

Does Rare getting their hands on Kinect way before everyone else gave them any progress as to their understanding of the technology?

Rare's always been proud of the fact that they got their hands on Microsoft's Kinect way before everyone else did. So have they made any progress as to their understanding of the technology?

Creative Director George Andreas claims that they have, and that the whole team does deserve a pat on the back for what they've accomplished thus far.
"[We've] been at I guess the spear tip of development, so we've had time to get our heads around how it works," said Andreas at the E3 developer roundtable after Microsoft's presentation.
"Things like voice commands you saw on the show floor, being able to call out to a caddy and choose your club using your voice.. adds a layer of immersion and believability to the product. It makes it a lot more approachable and ultimately a lot more fun as well."
Then it should be interesting to see how they're going to make use of this knowledge on Kinect. Back in March, the studio got themselves a new studio director in the person of former Codemasters and Midway executive Craig Duncan.

MotorStorm Apocalypse got a really protracted release because of the sensitive environment depicted in the game, in context of the successive earthquakes. After finally getting launched, however, Amazon now gives a massive discount to the game.
For those who have been waiting for a good deal before picking up a copy, here's you chance now. The online retailer has slashed off 25% to MotorStorm's price tag, which is now at US$ 44.99, from its original US$ 59.99.
We're taking it as yet another come-on from Sony fo you foks to get enticed to get the game despite the PSN issues. It should be a good opportunity to finally, truly enjoy one of 2011's most anticipated, yet under-apprecited titles because of all the obstacles that have been getting in its way.
