Everything the PS3 version was, and more.
We talked a few weeks ago about Mortal Kombat making its way to Vita, but we didn’t have much in the way of details. Thanks to IGN, however, we are now able to delve a little more deeply into what exactly Vita owners can expect from this return to the bloody tournament.
Mortal Kombat on the Vita is based on 2011’s PS3 reboot of the franchise, and will contain all four of the DLC characters as well as Kratos. The Vita version will also contain all DLC outfits and fatalities. The game will play much in the same way as the PS3 version, with a couple of Vita-specific tweaks. For one, you can tap the special meter to instantly unleash a special attack, or use the screen to perform fatalities in lieu of the touchpad. In some of the game’s 150 new missions, you may find yourself swiping the screen to wipe away blood or knocking missiles down with a tap.
The game also includes a few new maps that don’t address the Vita controls – they were developed for the console version but weren’t polished in time for release. Overall, this version of Mortal Kombat is essentially a GOTY repackaging of 2011’s title, with more features, more characters and more levels.
Are you stoked on Vita Mortal Kombat?

The games company scrambles to repair the latest Zelda title’s game-breaking glitch.
We talked last week about The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword’s game-breaking bug. If you missed the article and can’t be bothered to click the link in the previous sentence, here’s the basic gist: If you complete certain actions in a certain order, your game will essentially become stuck between events and impossible to complete. This bug crops up about 30 hours into the game, and if you hit it, you have to start over from your last save.
Unfortunately for Nintendo Wii owners, there’s really no such thing as a “last save.” Unless you painstakingly double your saves between the Wii and an SD card, there’s no way to recover old saves, which means you’re going to end up starting Skyward Sword from the beginning. Nintendo, being without a method to patch games, advised players on how to avoid this bug on their official site.
Now, the company is offering to patch the save files and repair the problem, with one catch: In order to take advantage of this offer, you’ll have to send your SD card or your Wii in to Nintendo for servicing. The process takes at least a week, though the company is expecting longer waits thanks to the holiday rush.
If mailing Nintendo your Wii doesn’t sound like something you want to do, the company is hard at work on a downloadable patch. There’s no infrastructure for Nintendo to deliver patches of this nature, so it could be a while before the whole thing gets sorted out. But, at least they’re working on it. It’s worth noting that these solutions are only available for Japanese players; we’re still awaiting word on what will happen for us in the west.
Have you had any issues with Skyward Sword? Would you send your Wii in for a broken game save, or just start over?

Fresh from the rumor mill – Xenoblade may be heading west, but only as a GameStop exclusive.
Gamers have been clamoring for a North American release of the epic Xenoblade Chronicles, but up until recently, Nintendo had been pretty firm in their refusal to bring the game overseas. As of today, however, the future of the title seems to be in flux, with NeoGAF reporting that Chronicles may in fact see a North American release, albeit as a GameStop exclusive.
The story broke as the result of a leaked internal screenshot from a GameStop store, and the chain has long been known for guessing/predicting release dates both correctly and very, very incorrectly. That being said, Nintendo seems to be stoking the flames of rumor, and has recently begun to add Xenoblade images to its Facebook page.
There has been no official confirmation from either GameStop or Nintendo, so we’ll just have to wait and see how this whole thing plays out. If the information does turn out to be true, look for Xenoblade Chronicles to hit shelves near you in April of 2012.
Would you like to see Xenoblade come to North America? Do you think making it an exclusive is the right plan?

Blizzard continues its publicity push for the upcoming StarCraft II expansion by revealing the shadow of the Zerg’s newest unit.
Last week, Blizzard stirred up a little excitement for StarCraft II’s Heart of the Swarm expansion by revealing the vague outline of a new unit for Terran players. Since Heart of the Swarm adds a new unit to each faction, it’s only fitting that we’d see more of the same from big blue.
Here is the newest revelation, an outline of a new unit for the Zerg:
Whatever it is, it’s definitely Zerg-like. I count at least four legs, a massive (probably ugly) head, and lots of spiky bits, so it should fit right in with existing Zerg units. As with the Terran reveal, we don’t have any details on what exactly the unit does or how it will be used in battle. Blizzard will likely release this info once all three silhouettes are available, and even then you should expect a wait.
If there’s one thing Blizzard loves, it’s drawing out announcements. Heart of the Swarm is headed your way in 2012, but there’s no official release date and Blizzard hasn’t shied away from game delays in the past. HoTS revolves around Kerrigan and the Zerg, and features an all-new single player campaign in addition to additional multiplayer features.
Is this marketing campaign working? Are you getting excited for a little SCII?

A deluge of news, reviews, gameplay videos and other Rage-related content storm the gaming press as the game hits store shelves in North America.
There are roughly ten new “things” coming out today, if you count games and various downloadable content packs. “Dark Souls,” a new “Spider-Man” title, “NBA 2K12” and “Orcs Must Die” are all making their debuts, but you surely wouldn’t know it if you followed the traditional gaming press. Looking over my Twitter feed (follow me! @mikedotfoster), it looks like the games media has settled in on their big title of the week: “Rage.”
So, to save you some time wading through the pile of words that have already been written on the subject, I figured I’d let you know what people seem to be feeling in regard to what is apparently the biggest title of the week. Here goes nothing!
PC Gamer calls the game “simple, satisfying” fun, praises the enemy A.I. and says that while the game is still very linear, the smooth controls and exciting action make it interesting all the way through. They rated it an 84 out of 100.
IGN says that “Rage” is one of the best-looking games ever made, boasts “excellent shooting sequences” and speaks positively on the single-player campaign as well as cooperative missions. Staying true to form, they give the game 8.5 out of 10.
Game Trailers calls the cinema writing “rote,” criticizes the lack of an overarching plot to guide the player and notes the anti-climactic ending, but looks positively on the well-realized characters. Gameplay and graphics win the day, earning the title 9 out of 10.
GamePro is exuberant about the vehicle sequences in the game but notes hit detection and graphics problems on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. They also note an anti-climactic finish but say that the smart A.I and vivid environments more than make up for story problems and minor bugs. Four stars.
If you’re keeping track, it looks like “Rage” is a fun, well-designed experience with great graphics but not much of a story. Most reviewers also noted that while the game is billed as an RPG, there isn’t much in the way of open-world exploration and true RPG fans may find the game limiting. Regardless, “Rage” is certainly sounding like a strong buy, with minor issues that will likely be patched up later.
Did you pick up “Rage” today? How are you enjoying it so far?

Looks like Sony is definitely ready to launch their PlayStation 3D Display to the public. Although they're still keeping the official release date a secret, they have already opened it up for pre-order placements.
If you are interested, then Amazon is the online retailer for you. They're pegged the PlayStation 3D Display, bundled up with MotorStorm Apocalypse, for US$ 499.99. If you're balking at that price tag, though, listen up because they're not done throwing in the treats. On top of MotorStorm Apocalypse, they're also throwing in Resistance 3, absolutely free!
Noted Amazon, "This offer will be extended to all existing pre-orders. Offer valid when shipped and sold by Amazon.com. Amazon reserves the right to change or terminate this promotion at any time."
Sony's been making their promotional rounds for the PlayStation 3D Display, and they're not being shy in claiming that there will definitely be "a lot of snazziness" in it. It's being rumored for a November release, and if Resistance 3 will be bundled for free in this Amazon offer, then maybe there is some truth to it, although the placeholder date claims the PlayStation 3D Display is coming out December 31, 2011.

MotorStorm Apocalypse got a really protracted release because of the sensitive environment depicted in the game, in context of the successive earthquakes. After finally getting launched, however, Amazon now gives a massive discount to the game.
For those who have been waiting for a good deal before picking up a copy, here's you chance now. The online retailer has slashed off 25% to MotorStorm's price tag, which is now at US$ 44.99, from its original US$ 59.99.
We're taking it as yet another come-on from Sony fo you foks to get enticed to get the game despite the PSN issues. It should be a good opportunity to finally, truly enjoy one of 2011's most anticipated, yet under-apprecited titles because of all the obstacles that have been getting in its way.
