But it runs on the Frostbite 2.0 engine!
If there’s one thing we learned from 2011, it’s that people will buy pretty much anything as long as it’s a first-person shooter. And since DICE isn’t likely to release another Battlefield title this year, somebody is going to have to stand up and take a (very small) bite out of Black Ops 2. That somebody appears to be Danger Close, and their strategy appears to be Medal of Honor.
The next Medal of Honor, subtitled Warfighter (creative), will hit shelves in October. The game is being built with DICE’s Frostbite 2.0 game engine—the very same one that powers the exceptionally pretty Battlefield 3. DICE, however, will not be involved in development; Danger Close has elected to build the entire game in-studio.
EA is planning to drop more details on the game at GDC in a couple of weeks. For now, we’ll just have to be satisfied with the promise of yet another brownish FPS.
Stay tuned for more updates, and in the meantime—do you prefer Medal of Honor over CoD or Battlefield?

Assuming, of course, that the Aussie ratings board doesn’t ban it.
Star Wars: The Old Republic hit shelves on December 20, 2011. Since then, the game has moved over two million copies. Unfortunately, none (or very few) of those copies were sold in Australia. EA announced in September that Australia would not be an initial launch zone for the game, and Aussie gamers have been waiting patiently for an update ever since.
Well, here’s your update: SWTOR lands in your upside-down country (also Kiwi nation) on March 1. If you’re already playing the game and you live in one of the March 1 zones (Australia, New Zealand, Hong Kong or Singapore), you’ll receive an optional free character transfer to an Asia Pacific server.
The Old Republic has been doing quite well since launch, amassing 1.7 million active subscribers and more than a few glowing reviews. It’s not the WoW-killer everyone seemed to think it would be, but nothing ever is. An Australian release will boost subscriber numbers and help EA get a bit closer to recouping its $200 million-plus investment in the game.
Are you eagerly awaiting a SWTOR release in your area?

A group of BF3 cheaters has a bone to pick with Punkbuster, and they’re doing it at the expense of regular joes.
The beating heart of Battlefield 3 is its intense online multiplayer. And whenever you have online multiplayer in a game, you have to find a way to protect it from cheaters. On PC versions of the game, this function is performed by software known as Punkbuster.
Punkbuster is an automated program that analyzes every player on a particular server and looks for known cheats and other exploits. If it catches someone in the act, they are immediately banned from EA’s Battlelog service. According to Kotaku, some of these cheaters are unhappy with the way Punkbuster affects their game, and have elected to take their frustrations out on the regular BF3 populace.
It seems that somehow, these players have managed to compromise Punkbuster on certain servers, and are using the service to ban innocent players. The group claims to have dumped over 150 players to date, and the official BF3 forums are awash in complaints of unwarranted bans. Essentially, this small selection of players has chosen to protest Punkbuster by using it against non-cheating individuals.
Posting to a bots and exploits forum, one user had this to say about Punkbuster:
“We are bringing back the unerring of punkbuster back for a 3rd season. We have selected ggc-stream as the target since they have the most streaming bf3 servers and makes it very easy to add fake bans. In 2011 we hit them with a mass ban wave and now were are banning real players from battlelog while ggc-stream is totally unaware. We have framed 150+ bf3 players alone.”
This story is still developing, and there’s been no official word from either DICE or Punkbuster on what may be going on, so the news should be taken with a grain of salt. Look for future updates as information is made available.
What do you think of Punkbuster?

Lag problems in Skyrim have made the game nearly unplayable, but Bethesda has a solution – two months after launch.
Skyrim launched on November 11, 2011, and since then has been the subject of plenty of praise. Some call it game of the year, some call it game of the decade and others just call it a good game, but one group of players isn’t really feeling the praise – PS3 owners. Thanks to an issue with the way the PS3 stores game data and a lack of foresight on the part of developers, many people playing Skyrim on the Sony system have experienced game-breaking lag.
The issue has been in the gaming press for the last couple of months, with Bethesda constantly noting that they’re trying to get it fixed. The first few patches for Skyrim came and went without a PS3 fix, and players are still running into the very same issue they had on launch day.
Now, two months after the game hit shelves, Bethesda thinks they may have a solution. Skyrim update 1.4, set to go live sometime this month, should address the lag issue PS3 owners have been complaining about. The patch is currently awaiting certification from Sony, but will be live as soon as possible.
It’s nice that Bethesda finally fixed the problem, but it certainly seems like they could have acted more quickly. What do you think?

Mobile Minecrafters, your time has finally come.
Minecraft: Pocket Edition has been a fairly big win for Mojang, but fans of the game have been relatively unhappy with the speed at which the game is progressing. Most downloaders are eagerly awaiting the addition of Survival Mode, one of the most popular ways in which to play the original PC title. Mojang has been quiet on the subject for a while, but released some official news over the weekend.
A new patch will be hitting Minecraft: Pocket Edition on February 8, 2012. This patch makes minor changes to the game and prepares the backend for the eventual addition of the Survival Mode people have been waiting for. It’s not exactly the best news in the world for clamoring fans, but it’s certainly better than nothing.
Additionally, the update will add some new creatures, new blocks and (finally) doors. You can check out the full update from Mojang here: The Plan for Minecraft
As for Survival Mode, it’s still scheduled for “sometime” in the future. This first update lays the groundwork, but full implementation of the game mode is still months away.

A leaked GameStop document hints that North America’s Vita launch may be accompanied by more games than previously thought.
We talked a couple of weeks ago about Vita’s confirmed launch titles, but it looks like a few games managed to slip through the radar. A leaked internal document from games retailer GameStop indicates that there are more titles hitting shelves than we were led to believe, chief among them Gravity Rush and Lumines.
Destructoid acquired an update launch list thanks to one of their clever readers, who likely scored the document from a friend or works at GameStop himself. Take a look at the list and see what you like:

Two excellent platformers hit the Nintendo 3DS, just in time for your New Year’s hangover.
The week between Christmas and New Year’s is a sort of gaming dead zone, with very few new titles hitting shelves and most gamers busy working on the titles they received over the holiday. But Nintendo is committed to keeping its weekly eShop release schedule, and actually dropped a pretty decent update here at the end of 2011.
Available now for your Nintendo 3DS are two excellent platformers: VVVVVV and Bionic Commando. The first game, released in 2010, is an incredibly challenging and fun platformer steeped in classic tradition, and the 3DS release marks the first time you can play it anywhere beyond your PC. The second game is actually a port of the original Game Boy version of Bionic Commando, in which you take the role of a super-soldier with a mechanical arm.
Bionic Commando will run you $3.99, while VVVVVV is priced at $7.99. Both are worth a look if you have a 3DS and are looking for an old-school game to play, but it’s worth noting that VVVVVV is only $1.24 on Steam – pick it up for PC if you aren’t worried about keeping it in your pocket.
Have you played VVVVVV? Did you find it impossibly difficult?

Both L.A. Noire and L.A. Noire: Complete Edition are available for download as of today.
Love solving crimes? What about interrogating shady characters? If so, Rockstar has you covered. The company announced today that L.A. Noire and L.A. Noire: Complete Edition are both available on the PSN store, meaning you can get in on the joy of solving gruesome murders all without having to walk down to the local game store.
L.A. Noire includes the basic game as it was launched, and will run you $31.99 (thanks, discount!). The Complete Edition, which is priced at $34.99, includes the full original game as well as every bit of DLC that’s been released since the game hit shelves. Honestly, for $3 more you’d be crazy not to upgrade to the full version.
L.A. Noire wasn’t as well received as some of Rockstar’s other games, but it’s worth noting that they mostly put the game together after Team Bondi tried and failed. That being said, the game is still an interesting narrative experience, so if you’re looking for a way to kill some time over the holidays and don’t want to pitch for a brand new game, L.A. Noire could be the way to go. It’s no Red Dead Redemption, but it’s still pretty good by most accounts.

Ó

Despite the Wii’s lack of a patching mechanism, Nintendo has come up with a way to solve the game-breaking bug that’s leaving some Zelda players stranded mid-story.
We talked a bit about the Skyward Sword bug last week. If this is the first you’ve heard of it, here’s what’s been going on: completing certain events in the game may cause it to accidentally lock off the rest of the story, forcing you to start the whole thing over. Last week it was revealed that Nintendo is accepting Wii consoles for repair in Japan, but it looks like the games developer has actually come up with a method for patching their title.
In Japan, Nintendo has just added a channel to the Wii home screen titled the Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Restoration Channel. The entire goal of this new channel is fixing the bug and making your save playable again, and reports indicate that it’s been working.
Unfortunately, for some users, the special restoration channel only repairs files on the main Wii memory. Players that saved their Skyward Sword data to an SD card will still have to send the card in for restoration, unless Nintendo finds some way to update the patch channel.
There’s still no word on how Nintendo is going to address this issue in the west, but if the restoration channel proves successful, it’s very likely it will be hitting a Wii near you very soon. Not too shabby for a company that up until now had no way to update or patch a game.
Let’s just hope they learn from this mistake and build the Wii U with these types of issues in mind.

Valve drops a ton of new in-game items and a brand new map to celebrate its Australian Christmas event.
Love hats? You’re in luck, for Valve has officially dropped its latest Team Fortress 2 update, titled Australian Christmas. The update is packed to the gills with completely unnecessary items for your TF2 character, including more hats than one person could possibly need. Still, it’s fun to see Valve treating their game with so much love.
There’s a lot going on in this update, so you should check out the full list of changes if you’re interested. If you don’t have time, here’s a quick rundown on what you can expect:
New map –Foundry
New weapons
New hats and items from the Steam Workshop
All-new achievements
75% off certain items in the Mann Supply Co. Store
If you want to get in on the festivities, you’ll need to play Team Fortress 2 while the event is live. Some of the items can only be looted through “Nice” crates, which in turn only spawn while the event is active. So get on it – it’s not like you have any other games to play right now, right?

Sony is pushing the hype machine as hard as it can for the mysterious “Last of Us” project – recent clues indicate the plot revolves around a world-ending virus.
Have you been following the Last of Us drama? First, Sony drops this weird video showing that creepy “mind-control” parasite that has been known to infect ants. Then, they hint that they’ll be announcing a brand new, PS3-exclusive game at this year’s VGAs (frankly, who isn’t announcing something there this year?).
Now, they’ve updated the website for The Last of Us with a couple of images, but neither of them casts much more light on the project than what we already have. The first image shows a forest and isn’t of much use, but the second shows a broken newspaper box (kiosk?) with a front-page story featuring the president giving a speech – the subtitle reads, “millions more are feared dead or infected.”
The Last of Us is generating an insane amount of buzz, and Sony has definitely handled the publicity part of this equation right. But part of me can’t help but think it’s going to be yet another zombie game. I mean, the mind-control parasite is an interesting touch and I’m all for new ideas, but it just doesn’t feel like it’s going to be some sort of mind-blowing revelation.
Then again, I could be wrong (as I usually am). We’ll just have to wait for the VGAs – scheduled for the tenth of this month.
What do you think Sony has up its sleeve?

The legendary game creator announces his desire to change roles at Nintendo, but Nintendo vehemently denies that he’ll be swapping posts.
Last night, the internet exploded with news that Shigeru Miyamoto was retiring from his current position at Nintendo. While not leaving the company or the games industry, Miyamoto stated that he wanted to leave the huge franchises like Zelda and Mario to teams of younger developers so that he could go on to work on smaller projects with shorter development times. He even mentioned his love for the guy that created the Rubik’s cube.
The news was interesting, to be sure – Miyamoto clearly wants to work closer to the cutting edge of development, rather than as the guy who steers multi-billion dollar franchises. But I’m guessing Nintendo’s shareholders weren’t too happy with the information, because the company has issued a stern denial:
"This is absolutely not true.  There seems to have been a misunderstanding. He has said all along that he wants to train the younger generation.
"He has no intention of stepping down. Please do not be concerned."
Nintendo is clearly trying to calm investor fears that the man responsible for most of the company’s success would be stepping into a position with less responsibility, despite the fact that the original interview seemed pretty clear about Miyamoto’s intent.
There’s obviously a small chance this whole thing is a translation error, but the odds of that are miniscule. More likely, Miyamoto has been planning this type of move for years and perhaps announced it before Nintendo had time to do the proper legwork with investors.
We’ll just have to see how the story plays out. In the meantime, what would you think of a Zelda or Mario project without Miyamoto’s oversight?

Rocksteady has addressed the DX11 issue that made the game unplayable on PC, but only for some players.
Poor Arkham City. It’s had a rough run in recent months – despite launching to rave reviews, the game has been marred by technical difficulties, especially when it comes to the PC. We reported a couple of weeks ago that Arkham City wasn’t necessarily working correctly with DX11, and at the time Rocksteady’s solution basically boiled down to “turn off DX11.”
But, thanks to Steam, we can now see that Arkham City has been patched by its developers, and that the DX11 issue should be mostly resolved – assuming you play on a 64-bit system. If your computer runs on a 32-bit version of Windows 7 or Vista, you’re still going to need to use DX9 until Rocksteady can get the next patch out.
Here are the patch notes, courtesy of PC Gamer:
Performance / hitching issues have been greatly improved for running in DX 11.
An issue with players running out of Video Memory or encountering a Rendering Thread Exceptions has been address. This was primarily affecting 32-bit Operating Systems.
A progression block after defeating Ra’s Al Ghul has been fixed. This was issue occurred primarily on lower end computer setups and described as Batman not readying his Reverse Batarang.
A crash that occurred when scrolling between the Character Bios and Arkham City Stories has been fixed.
A crash that occurred when selecting “Press Start” immediately when available at the Title Screen has been fixed. The issue was described as crashing/hard locking around the DLC (Downloadable Content) check.
Have you downloaded the patch yet? How’s it working out for you?

The new dashboard for the Xbox 360 launches this week, but it may be missing a few of its most anticipated features.
If you were excited about bringing your favorite television shows to your Xbox dashboard, you may be in for a bit of bad news this morning, as it looks like some of the bigger partners for Microsoft’ big re-launch aren’t quite ready to send their services to the console. Xfinity, Verizon, HBO and the UFC are all reporting that their services will unfortunately be unavailable at launch, with a planned “early 2012” release.
It’s definitely a bummer for anyone that was expecting to merge their two services together, but for the most part this delay probably doesn’t affect most Xbox users. It does cause one to wonder whether Microsoft is actually ready to push the update live, or if they’re just rushing it out so they can meet the goal they set for themselves.

The sequel to one of the best-looking mobile games ever made has some serious problems on the original iPad and iPod Touch.
Infinity Blade II hit digital shelves yesterday, and while the game has earned praise from most fans and critics, some gamers haven’t been able to enjoy the game at all due to a pesky bug with older Apple hardware. Apparently, generation one iPads and older iPod Touches may experience performance problems when running the game, depending on how many apps you currently have installed.
Epic Games, the company behind Infinity Ward, is well aware of the problem and hard at work on a solution. The developer is aiming to patch the game “ASAP,” so keep an eye on your little blue App Store icon for the notification that an update is ready. The basic problem arose because Epic didn’t test the game on fully loaded devices, instead using test devices that had only the game and a couple of other apps.
As we know, iOS is prone to clutter and a large number of apps, combined with the hardware requirements of the game, are causing older devices to run out of system memory. There’s no official timeline on how long a patch will take, but I’d expect one within the next week or so.
Have you experienced any Infinity Blade II issues?

If you want to be take advantage of CoD Elite Founder bonuses, today’s your last day to register.
Call of Duty Elite has seen its share of ups and downs. While the PC version is still on some vague horizon and the console versions have experienced crashes and other access problems due to huge surges in demand, the service has proven successful beyond Activision’s wildest dreams. Millions of players have signed up to take advantage of the features the service provides.
Every player that signs up for CoD Elite before the end of November is given what Activision calls “Founder” status. Founder status comes with a few specific perks, including an in-game title, in-game emblem, weapon camo, clan XP and special contests and prizes.
If you’re really into Modern Warfare 3, or Call of Duty in general, CoD Elite is an excellent service for you. Even if you don’t earn Founder status, you’ll still have access to all of the basic features offered by COD Elite. But you can still get in on Founder bonuses if you register before the calendar rolls over to December 1st.
Of course, there’s one other method for getting into the Founders club after the deadline: spending more money. If you pick up the Modern Warfare 3: Hardened Edition, you’ll be grandfathered into the Founder’s club regardless of when you register.
There’s no info available on how this impacts PC owners, since Elite isn’t live for them quite yet. I’m trying to get someone at Activision to give me a statement or update – we’ll see.
Are you enjoying Elite so far? How does it compare to Battlelog?

The days of three-point something something have come and gone – it’s time for the fours.
It seems like we just got a PS3 firmware update, but time flies in the world of games. As of today, you and your fellow PS3 owners can pick up the latest and greatest version of the PS3’s firmware, titled v.4.00. It’s been a long time coming, but it’s finally here – assuming firmware is a thing you eagerly anticipate and not a thing that renders your PS3 useless.
The PlayStation blog offers a few details on what you can expect from this new and improved firmware. Vita compatibility has been included, allowing you to share content from the device to your PS3. Here’s one cool thing: if you have a PlayStation Plus membership, you’ll be able to disable or enable automatic updates for patches, system software and trophy information syncs. Pretty handy, eh?
There are a number of other things being added, including privacy features, cinema conversion for Blu-ray and a couple of localized language options. All in all, this seems like a pretty straightforward software update without too many bells and whistles.
There’s no word on whether the new firmware breaks any of the existing (or leaked) hacks for the 3.73 firmware, so it’s probably a roll of the dice for those of you with modded consoles.
Let us know if you spot anything.

The next free expansion for the space-spreadsheet MMO launches today.
Say what you will about CCP, providing free expansions for life is a pretty cool thing to do for your subscribers. EVE Online has been active for the better part of ten years, and every content update and expansion has been made available free of charge. The latest free expansion, titled Crucible, is available for download as of today.
Crucible is a pretty massive update for EVE Online, adding new features and reworking some of the game’s mechanics from the ground up. Some updates include better space graphics, a more readable in-game font, updated Captains Quarters, new ships, UI changes – the list goes on practically forever.
If you’re an EVE player, you should probably check out the Crucible website for a full list of what’s being changed. This is one of the biggest updates ever applied to the game and comes after nearly an entire week of downtime, so expect things to be very different after you install and log in. Very different, but still the same EVE.
The studio has taken to calling Crucible “EVE re-forged.” What do you think about the new expansion?

Here comes the next big non-expansion content update for one of the most popular MMOs in the known universe.
World of Warcraft is in a constant state of flux. Even between expansions and major content patches, the developers are always making tiny tweaks or fixing slight issues. Today’s 4.3 patch falls in the “major” category, introducing a new raid instance and dropping some brand new features on World of Warcraft players around the globe.
Here’s a brief rundown on some of the things you can expect to see in World of Warcraft Patch 4.3: Hour of Twilight:
Three new small-group instances
End Time
Well of Eternity
Hour of Twilight
Dragon Soul raid
Void Storage – to help you free up your bank
Item Transmogrification – the ability to change the appearance of weapons and items
Legendary Daggers: Fangs of the Father
Huge XP Reduction from 71 to 80
And a bunch of other stuff. You can see the full patch notes here: Patch 4.3

Sega’s decision to push the game out of its normal schedule results in a big win for players.
The Yakuza series, at first, was updated like clockwork. Sega’s initial design for the franchise was a new sequel almost every year, with Yakuza landing in 2006, Yakuza 2 hitting 2008, 3 released in 2009 and 4 in 2010. It’s a release schedule that shouldn’t be unfamiliar to gamers, especially in 2011, the year of thirds.
But Sega elected to push Yakuza 5 out of its release schedule, which at the time had some gamers concerned about the project’s viability. But Sega’s intent with the extra development time is becoming more clear now that some details on the game have been released to the public.
The producer of Yakuza 5, Masayoshi Yokoyama, has indicated that this game is intended to be the San Andreas of its franchise, i.e. a game that dramatically expands on the precedents set in previous games and creates an entirely new experience in the process. Some things remain, like the core gameplay and the fact that the game is a PS3 exclusive, but almost everything else is being rebuilt from the ground up.
The intent of the developers is to include five complete cities in Yakuza 5 – if you’ve played any of the previous titles, Yokoyama indicated that each city will be similar in scale to Sotenbori or Ryuku. He likens the development process to creating five games at the same time, and I wouldn’t doubt him for a second – cities are very hard to build.
There’s still not much info regarding when Yakuza 5 will actually hit shelves, but for now you can assume it’s quite a ways away. Late 2012 or early 2013 are probably the best-case scenarios.
But, it looks like the game that does land will be a more powerful, more interesting and more impressive version of the franchise.
What do you think about Yakuza’s extended development time? Worth it, or too long to wait?

A huge patch to the incredibly difficult game adjusts some stats, item drops and other details.
Dark Souls is quickly earning a reputation as one of the hardest games ever made. Every post or update I see about it makes some sort of passing mention of its difficulty. Not having played Dark Souls, I can’t comment on whether or not it’s truly difficult, but it certainly seems so from where I sit.
Thanks to a large patch, released yesterday here in the States, Dark Souls may have just gotten a tiny bit easier. The patch is also live in the U.K., but only for the PS3 version of the game.
The patch addresses a number of concerns by fixing glitches, improving targeting, and upping the rate at which items drop. The patch notes are long, but here are some of the greatest hits:
Enemy soul drops improved
Covenant and Equipment Enhancement item drops improved
Paying for sins is cheaper
Lock-on improved
Freezes fixed
Stuck issues resolved
You can check out the full patch notes here: Dark Souls Patch Notes
What did you think of Dark Souls? Incredibly difficult, or incredibly overrated?

Epic Games has reportedly fixed a widespread issue with the game randomly freezing in the game’s latest Live patch.
As we find ourselves in the middle of this insane launch schedule, it’s easy to forget some of the huge games that have already come and gone this season. Gears of War 3 has been out since October, and despite moving millions of copies seems to have shifted off the minds of gamers eagerly awaiting their next fix.
But quite a few people are still playing GoW 3, and some of those folks have been reporting a serious problem with the game.
Apparently, some Gears players were experiencing random game freezes of varying lengths – sometimes the game would freeze for a few moments, other times it would crash entirely. Not exactly the kind of thing you want to happen right in the middle of an intense Locust confrontation. Epic Games pushed a patch through late last night that seems to have resolved the problem, so if you’re a Gears owner you should go ahead and get it downloaded.
Beyond the bug fix, Epic added a spectator mode for private versus matches, eased up the requirements for a couple of medals, and balanced a few other things. They’ve also fixed a few bugs – you should check out the full list here: Gears of War 3 Title Update 2

Well, not exactly. It’s free in terms of cash-money, but you’ll have to sell your soul to Origin.
If you like Burnout games but hate spending money, today is your day. A few savvy gamers at HotUKDeals have worked out how to score a copy of Burnout Paradise completely for free, with the only catch being that you have to use Origin to get it.
Here’s how the deal works: Log into your Origin account (or create a new one), run a quick search for Burnout and add Burnout Paradise to your cart. When you head to checkout, type the code “PARADISE” into the promo codes box and the game’s price will be dropped from £4.99 to £0.00. Unfortunately, this deal only seems to be active in the UK – no free games for us folks in the States.
Paradise earned rave reviews and is certainly a fan favorite, so picking the game up for free is an excellent deal. The game takes place in a fairly large virtual city, with stunt, race and other events strewn about at various intersections. Driving around to find the start of a failed challenge can be annoying, but the game has a great soundtrack and for the most part is fun to play.
Besides, if you’re getting it for free, what do you have to lose?

Today is your last day to buy games at the old five-system share rate. New Game limits are in place when the service comes back online.
We discussed Sony’s recent decision to change the game sharing limit from five games to two a few weeks back, and (judging from the comments) people didn’t seem too happy about the new policy. Regardless of booming customer complaints, Sony is moving forward with the plan and will take PSN down from 8am to 10pm (PST) tomorrow to implement the update.
This means if you want to buy games that still fall under the old five-game limit, you need to buy them before the service goes down tomorrow morning.
Sony is calling the 14-hour downtime “routine maintenance,” but it certainly seems like a long time for their online service to be off-limits. I don’t own a PS3 so I’m unfamiliar with their maintenance routine – please let me know in the comments if this is something they do frequently.
During the downtime, you won’t be able to access the PlayStation Store, Account Management or create new accounts, and you won’t be able to access your account via the web. Here’s one strange thing though, Sony indicates in their official blog that “some users” may still be able to play online. Some?
There’s also a PS3 firmware update included in the maintenance, but details are scant. We’ll keep you posted as we get more information.
How do you feel about the new game sharing limits?
