Just a few days after Maxis hinted at a big GDC announcement, it looks like their surprise has been outed.
It’s been a while since we last saw the SimCity franchise. The last game in the series, SimCity Societies, launched in 2007 to mixed reviews. Since then, Maxis has remained mum on whether it would be revisiting the series. Until, of course, last week, when EA hinted that the company had an enormous reveal planned for this year’s Game Developers Conference.
No information was given on what Maxis might have up its sleeve, but most people immediately began to assume that a new SimCity was on the table. And, it turns out, they may have been right.
Thanks to some scanned images from a German magazine, we now have a few details and screenshots/concept art from what could be SimCity 5. The game will take place 20 years after other iterations of the franchise, and will feature more flexible city designs that don’t depend so much on blocks. The game will also feature a new graphics engine and – gasp – multiplayer in the form of global leaderboards.
Here’s some of the shots and concept art, courtesy of NeoGaf:

Changes galore await players in Lord of the Rings Online’s Riders of Rohan expansion.
It’s been a few months since Turbine released Rise of Isengard, the latest expansion for Lord of the Rings Online and the most popular add-on ever released for the popular MMORPG. With players chomping at the bit for even more content, Turbine has officially detailed some of what players can expect from its next release, slated for release in fall of 2012.
The new expansion, titled Riders of Rohan, brings several big changes to the Lord of the Rings Online universe. Turbine claims that RoR contains twice as much new content as Rise of Isengard, and while there’s no price detailed, we do have a quick sampling of some of the new features:
Mounted combat
Level cap increased to 85
New zones
New quests
New foes (mounted!)
Lord of the Rings Online has been free-to-play since 2010 and has seen strong performance since making the switch. Turbine doesn’t share its subscription numbers, but it its estimated that over a million players have entered the world of Middle Earth since the game’s launch back in 2007.

The long-delayed sequel to ArenaNet’s popular MMORPG gets another release window and a public beta.
Guild Wars is one of the most popular MMORPGs on the market, selling over six million copies and standing as a shining example of how to run a successful online game without charging a subscription fee. Its sequel, Guild Wars 2, was announced way back in 2007, but has yet to see the light of day.
Fans of the franchise got their first look at Guild Wars 2 back in 2009, and ArenaNet announced that the game would be ready for a 2011 release. Later that year, NCsoft CEO Jaeho Lee pushed the game back to 2011, with a public beta aimed for some time in 2010. Neither came to fruition.
2012 appears, in the words of ArenaNet, to be the year of Guild Wars. Company president Mike O’Brien posted a quick statement on the official ArenaNet blog outlining details of Guild Wars’ development schedule – look for a full release sometime this year, and a public beta starting in March. This beta will expand through the month of April, and fans are encouraged to check in on the official site for further information.

Ó

A long-running legal battle between the two developers has apparently been settled, though details remain scarce.
While Bethesda’s Fallout 3 remains one of the most popular games ever released, the original two Fallout games were developed in by Interplay. In 2007, Bethesda purchased the rights to the franchise for $5.75 million, with one catch – Interplay would be left to develop an MMORPG set in the Fallout universe. Bethesda decided in 2009 they’d rather not allow Interplay to develop the game, and brought legal action against the company to snatch the rights back.
A protracted legal battle has played out in courts for the last couple of years, with each company filing motions, bringing witnesses and other legal-y things. The end goal on Bethesda’s end was likely protecting the Fallout brand rather than developing an MMO, and Interplay’s goal was obviously to retain the rights to the game as noted in the original contract.
The legal battle has now reportedly ended, with both parties coming to a settlement on the very first day of trial. There are few details on what the settlement may involve – full details will likely be made available near the end of January.
In the meantime, it looks like the dark cloud hovering over Fallout has finally been lifted, and now at least one developer will have free reign to develop the franchise.
What do you think the settlement involved? Who capitulated, who got paid, etc.?

Ó

The legal battle between Viacom and the creators of Rock Band rages on, with the latest blow being delivered straight to Viacom’s wallet.
Viacom and Harmonix have been in and out of courtrooms for months, trying (and failing) to work out an issue that stems from bonuses paid during the parent company’s acquisition of the small games developer. Both companies are trying to wring high, multi-million dollar settlements out of the other due to this disagreement, but it looks like Viacom is the big loser this morning.
In documents released this week, it was revealed that a private arbitrator ruled that Viacom owes Harmonix and its shareholders a whopping $383 million in unpaid bonuses - a number with which Viacom naturally disagrees.
Here’s a breakdown: In 2006, Viacom acquired Harmonix (and Rock Band). The deal required that Viacom pay big bonuses to Harmonix, with $175 million paid upfront and $150 million paid for Rock Band sales in 2007. However, the company paid no bonuses at all in 2008, and actually demanded that Harmonix return the previous two bonuses. Viacom had to give up Harmonix due to the Rock Band franchise losing money, but Harmonix filed a suit claiming that Viacom still owed $550 million in promised bonuses.
Now we’re just watching the drama unfold. Viacom plans to fight the ruling, which was issued December 19, and is claiming that some evidence was “improperly excluded” from the arbitration hearings.
This one probably has a few months to go and it’s unclear who exactly is right, but Viacom is certainly on the ropes for now. We’ll keep you posted as new details emerge.

The Farmville and Empires and Allies creator has plenty of titles planned for the future, some of which may exist completely independent of Facebook.
Zynga’s story is one of legend – a small indie company builds simple but addictive game and in the process becomes a game development juggernaut. Zynga’s influence on the world of social gaming is so large that it actually forced Facebook to back down on its implementation of Facebook credits – no small feat considering the massive power Facebook wields to crush or promote new games.
Zynga has shown no signs of slowing down since setting up shop in 2007, with 2010’s CityVille recently surpassing FarmVille as its most popular and most played game. In a press conference held last week, Zynga announced a number of new titles and plans to perhaps start a gradual shift away from Facebook and towards independence.
Here’s a quick rundown on the games they talked about, though they noted they have at least 10 new IPs in development:
CastleVille
In  CastleVille you’ll play the leader of a small territory and will work with its inhabitants to grow crops, obtain land and defend your sovereignty. Details are scant, but it’s safe to assume there will be significant opportunities to grief your friend’s kingdoms.
Hidden Chronicles
Hidden Chronicles is a departure from the traditional Zynga game model, relying on static pictures that the player has to investigate. Players investigate a place called Ramsey Manor, and the game sounds quite a bit like the exploration phases of the Professor Layton series.
Zynga Bingo
Zynga Bingo is basically Bingo, but benefits from integration with other Zynga Casino titles. So if you’re winning chips in one game, you can transfer them to Zynga Bingo as you see fit.
Zynga also announced a couple of interesting things that indicate their pushing away from Facebook including HTML-5 support for mobile gaming and something called a zTag, which was described as a space for gamers to connect with one another.
How do you feel about the future of social gaming? Is there room for innovative titles or are they all silly distractions?

Ó

We first heard of Rage officially back in 2007. It took a pretty long while in development, and considering that it only came out a couple of weeks back - September 13th, 2011, to be precise - it's all understandable why people would come to expect topnotch quality, nothing less.
Setting aside the conflicting verdict of gamers and critics alike, though, did id Software brought this dilemma of high expectation upon themselves when they announced the game too early? According to id Software's Tim Willits, it "doesn't matter."
"The thing is John [Carmack] loves talking about cool stuff. At the end of the day, it doesn't matter. For us, now we're right around the corner and doing these events, the game's looking great, plays great. Whatever you're talking about it early or you talk about it late or you announce this or you announce that or you have this campaign or that campaign, all it comes down to is the game's fun. And the game's a heck lot of fun."
That's true, of course, insofar as ultimate considerations are concerned. If you remember, Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 5 also took way too long in the kitchen, much to the frustration of its loyal awaiting fans. Five years it stayed, there, yes, it did. But when it did come out, it did so with much hullaballoo and all the fanfare that Polyphony and Sony could afford. More importantly, it did live up to the hype, and the five-year waiting scheme for the game ended up being a legend of sorts.
The downside to announcing a game literally years ahead of its time, however, is that it keeps gamers at a sort of stale standstill. They're just waiting for the game to come out, they're being teased constantly (sometimes all too rarely), and the few bits of breadcrumbs offered to them end up not satisfying at all. If the game is hyped well enough, then the publishers need not worry because the curiosity will manage to sustain itself.
If the pacing is not timed properly however (i.e. when to go into radio silence, and when to come out with a deluge of information), then you end up with a game practically forgotten. Or if not forgotten, it's taken so long, people have lost interest in it anymore. Say, like Alan Wake.
Anyway, if id Software is happy with how Rage turned out, then so be it. Maybe it really was just because John Carmack couldn't keep a pretty secret to himself. He probably had an inkling how big a thing Rage could get, and so he didn't waste any more time keeping it a secret. They did take their precious time getting it out, though.
In the end, however, and as Tim Willits would like to put it, Rage came out with guns ablazing, and delivered the goods worth the wait. That's what they said, though. What about you? Was it worth all those years of hype?

DICE apparently confirms that all squad management will occur in the out-of-game Battlelog system, sending many a “Battlefield” fan into a rage.
One of the best features of “Battlefield: Bad Company 2” is the ability to create, join and leave squads during gameplay. In addition to giving players the option of making a quick private squad with friends, the Leave/Join mechanism makes it easier for solo players (like me) to jump into a random game and immediately start assisting the team.
Squad play and management is largely what sets the “Battlefield” series apart from “Call of Duty,” which has always been much more of a chaotic rush for kills than an organized objective-taking experience. According to Daniel Matros, community manager for DICE, in-game squad management is now a thing of the past.
From Twitter:
“Voice chat and squadding will be on the Battlelog side of things”
While this is far from an absolute confirmation that players won’t be able to edit squads during games, it certainly reads that way. Many “BF3” gamers on Twitter are upset about the news, and Matros hasn’t made a move to clear up any possible misconception, so at the moment it looks like we’ll all be making extensive use of Battlelog.
For those out of the loop, Battelog is a web-based stats and social media hub similar in theory to the community site Bungie built for “Halo” fans. You’ll be able to interact with other players, view personal statistics, compare your stats to top-tier players and now, presumably, create and manage your squads. While this certainly doesn’t seem like the most convenient way to conduct an activity that worked perfectly well in the game, we do have to remember that “Battlefield 3” is in beta and things can still change.
On the plus side, there are rumors that Battlelog will be headed to your smartphone, allowing you to check in on stats and edit squads from anywhere you pick up a signal.

After much ado about something, Square Enix finally makes it official. Dragon Quest X is indeed coming to the Wii, this after its announcement way back in 2007.
Apart from the Wii, however, the latest console of Nintendo, the Wii U, is also reported to be getting a piece of the Dragon Quest X pie. The confirmation was made at the publisher's press conference held in Tokyo early this morning, also revealing that the game will feature online components.
Although Level-5 is no longer working on the development of the latest installment for the famed videogame series, Square Enix is said to be taking care of it internally in the meantime.
So waht's going to be in store for you in Dragon Quest X? Well, according to game producer Yosuke Saito, DQ X will be set in the world of Astortia, composed of five continents and five races. That's all they're ready to divulge at this point, however, so we're just going to have to wait for other details to trickle in regarding the story.
As for the gameplay features, the following are confirmed: a job system, in-game events reflecting the current season (ie. Halloween, New Year's), and character creation.
No date has been set as of yet, but for now, it's definitely confirmed for a Japan outing sometime next year. You can also check out some footage that's been packaged in discreetly within Dragon Quest Collection, which comes out next week, September 15th, again in Japan.

Yes, it's Vritua Fighter 5, but this time, it's Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown, featuring a "massive overhaul" from when it first released back in 2007.
Said Haruki Satomi, Sega West's VP for the digital business arm, "Virtua Fighter 5 has always been an authentic arcade fighter, even when played from the comfort of a home console. And, like any proper arcade dynasty, we've continued to support, expand and tweak the game in the years since its release."
With this revamped version of the game, Sega is aiming to "bring the ultimate expression of competitive one-on-one gaming to console players in one perfect package."
They did not specify when exactly next summer will Final Showdown be making its final touchdown, but we'll be sure to keep you posted.

E3 has become practically synonymous with the Los Angeles Convention Center, but if reports are true, this loveteam may be ending soon.
As it turns out, ESA, the company organizing the annual expo event, has only one more year left in their LACC contract. While it should be easy for them to renew it, a wedge in that consideration would be the lined up construction in the center's West Hall. This has thus pushed them to check out other options.
"There have been other places we've looked at," said Rich Taylor to LA Times. "We don't want our attendees to have to rappel across a construction quarry to get to a booth."
Understandably, the city of angels would want to keep the event within their territory because of the huge revenue it brings in to the city year by year. We're talking an estimated US$ 25 million here, just for a couple of days of expo goodness.
Furthered Taylor, "There are other locations that would obviously love to have a show of this size in their backyards but thus far we feel we have a strong, mutually productive relationship with Los Angeles. E3 has always been venued in at the LACC, with the exception of the years 2007 and 2008, where they went to Santa Monica instead.
For this year's event, ESA put in more stringent measures, not only for the presentors, but also to the public attendees. It turned out successfully, and you can check out our round-up of the E3 2011 event right here.

Rocksmith, the first ever music simulator game that lets you play on a real guitar, is offering you a swell discount.
Of course, one of the main concerns in playing a game designed like this is the cost of having an actual electric guitar. Ubisoft's looked into that, don't worry, and so has tied up with GameStop to give you US$ 25 off on the instrument.
All you have to do to avail of this discount is to place your pre-order with GameStop, who will then gie you the US$ 25 voucher for your purchase at Guitar Center. This should work pretty well especially for those who are just buying their first guitar.
Besides, if you do enjoy playing the real thing - which shouldn't be all too hard to imagine how that could happen - consider the guitar as a wise investment. It always should be.
Then when you're good enough to become a real rockstar, that's the time you can get that attitude and break it onstage, if that's your thing.
So far, the deal is available only for the US region, but hopefully, it's going to be brought over to others as well. It sure beats the old goodie bag, most certainly.
