5th Cell is prepping a brand new platformer, set for release this Thursday.
5th Cell recently brought its Nintendo DS hit, Scribblenauts, to Apple’s iOS software. The game was a smashing success, and even managed to topple Angry Birds from the top software slot for a couple of weeks. With performance like that, it’s no wonder that the development company is targeting their newest game, Run Roo Run, directly at the iOS market.
As you can see, Run Roo Run operates in much the same way as Robot Unicorn attack - your character automatically runs across the screen, and you have to collect goodies and avoid hazards as you go. The one major difference is that in lieu of scrolling across an infinite screen, your auto-running will be limited to one screen length. 5th Cell dubs this setup “microplatforming.”
You can expect to find a whopping 420 levels on launch day, with increasingly complex and difficult problems. Plus, you’ll unlock “extreme” versions of every level as you go, giving you a total of 840 levels to play. 5th Cell has promised 10 new levels every week, free of charge.
Not too shabby for mobile gamers, eh? Watch for Run Roo Run on the iTunes Store tomorrow, January 12.

Two excellent platformers hit the Nintendo 3DS, just in time for your New Year’s hangover.
The week between Christmas and New Year’s is a sort of gaming dead zone, with very few new titles hitting shelves and most gamers busy working on the titles they received over the holiday. But Nintendo is committed to keeping its weekly eShop release schedule, and actually dropped a pretty decent update here at the end of 2011.
Available now for your Nintendo 3DS are two excellent platformers: VVVVVV and Bionic Commando. The first game, released in 2010, is an incredibly challenging and fun platformer steeped in classic tradition, and the 3DS release marks the first time you can play it anywhere beyond your PC. The second game is actually a port of the original Game Boy version of Bionic Commando, in which you take the role of a super-soldier with a mechanical arm.
Bionic Commando will run you $3.99, while VVVVVV is priced at $7.99. Both are worth a look if you have a 3DS and are looking for an old-school game to play, but it’s worth noting that VVVVVV is only $1.24 on Steam – pick it up for PC if you aren’t worried about keeping it in your pocket.
Have you played VVVVVV? Did you find it impossibly difficult?

The digital distribution platform is heading to GameFly’s client, although some of its games may be left behind.
Earlier this year, GameFly made a very smart decision by acquiring Direct2Drive and announcing their intention to launch into the digital distribution market. With retail sales falling and on-disc games becoming less viable (though still strong), it was a good move by a company that depends on hard copies of software to make its money.
Now, a few months after the announcement, we’re getting details on how exactly Direct2Drive will be implemented into the current GameFly system. Here’s what we know so far:
Direct2Drive will merge with the current GameFly client
Direct2Drive customers will have GameFly accounts created for them
Direct2Drive customers with existing GameFly accounts will have the two accounts merged
Customers are advised to download all previous purchases now, as there’s no guarantee the games will be available through GameFly
If you’re a current Direct2Drive user and you want more details on how the transition will go down, you should check out the official FAQ. It’s worth noting that current GameFly customers won’t see much of a change, and merged Direct2Drive customers won’t be give a subscription to the regular GameFly service unless they decide to pay for one.
What do you think of GameFly’s plan to merge the two services?

Curious about the future of the Wii and Nintendo 3DS? Tune in tonight for details.
Later this evening, Nintendo will be holding one of their “Nintendo Direct” conferences for investors and other fans of the brand. Tonight’s update will focus largely on the Nintendo 3DS, though there are rumors that some Wii U information may also be forthcoming. There will also be updates regarding the future of the Wii, which has seen a steady decline in titles since Nintendo announced the Wii U.
The event is set to take place on Tuesday morning in Japan, putting it at 10pm EST or 7pm PST here in the States. Like other Nintendo Direct events, tonight’s will be broadcast on the Nintendo Ustream page – in Japanese. So if you want to tune in, you may want to find a translator. That, or wait for a translated version to pop up a few hours later.
Nintendo likely has a lot to talk about, with 3DS sales suddenly skyrocketing and the brand looking better than ever despite continuing to post financial losses. Tonight’s presentation will probably be designed to instill confidence in the company and let fans and shareholders know that good stuff is coming.
Will you watch the Nintendo Direct event?

Microsoft’s fall re-design apparently hit some sort of snag, and doesn’t seem to be launching today.
Today was supposed to be the day our lives changed. Today was supposed to be the day that the Xbox 360 re-invented what a console could do, and gave us new ways to watch television and interact with our friends. At least, that’s the line that Microsoft has been feeding us since announcing the Metro dashboard update what seems like a thousand years ago.
And here we are after months of waiting. It’s officially time to download that Xbox update, and delve into its rich multimedia capabilities. Except – where is it?
Despite Microsoft pushing the release as hard as humanly possible this week, it looks like Metro has experienced some sort of unexpected problem and isn’t currently available to Xbox owners. Major Nelson, the director of Xbox Live programming, let everyone know that the dashboard update has been delayed, and that details would come later this afternoon.
For now, you’ll just have to deal with the old dashboard. How will you ever survive?

The games company and console maker reports huge numbers from the Black Friday sales rush.
Nintendo hasn’t been doing so great as of late, but most people figured they’d see a pretty nice boost once the holiday season rolled around. Well, the holiday season is here, and so is the predicted Nintendo boost. The company boasted astonishing sales numbers for the Thanksgiving weekend, fueled by Black Friday sales and the recent releases of two very good games.
Nintendo is reporting that since the launch of both games, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword has sold over 535,000 copies and Super Mario 3D Land has sold 500,000, both with big surges during the holiday week. The Wii also saw the best Black Friday numbers since its release, with buyers purchasing an astonishing 500,000 units. I’d love to see how Microsoft and Sony did – I’m sure they crushed as well.
Perhaps the most important data for Nintendo, however, is the increased sales of its 3DS handheld unit. Sales of the device tripled in the last week, going up by 325%. The 3DS has now officially sold more units than the original DS managed to snag in its first year of release. Whatever Nintendo needed to happen with the 3DS, it looks like it’s finally happening. The 3DS will likely continue to sell well, with Mario Kart 7 on the horizon.
We’ll just have to wait and see how Nintendo carries this momentum into the holiday season. The Wii has always been a big Christmas buy, and the 3DS is fresh enough to be on some holiday wish lists.
What’s on your holiday wish list? Do you want a Wii, a 3DS, or something else entirely?

Ó

Sega’s decision to push the game out of its normal schedule results in a big win for players.
The Yakuza series, at first, was updated like clockwork. Sega’s initial design for the franchise was a new sequel almost every year, with Yakuza landing in 2006, Yakuza 2 hitting 2008, 3 released in 2009 and 4 in 2010. It’s a release schedule that shouldn’t be unfamiliar to gamers, especially in 2011, the year of thirds.
But Sega elected to push Yakuza 5 out of its release schedule, which at the time had some gamers concerned about the project’s viability. But Sega’s intent with the extra development time is becoming more clear now that some details on the game have been released to the public.
The producer of Yakuza 5, Masayoshi Yokoyama, has indicated that this game is intended to be the San Andreas of its franchise, i.e. a game that dramatically expands on the precedents set in previous games and creates an entirely new experience in the process. Some things remain, like the core gameplay and the fact that the game is a PS3 exclusive, but almost everything else is being rebuilt from the ground up.
The intent of the developers is to include five complete cities in Yakuza 5 – if you’ve played any of the previous titles, Yokoyama indicated that each city will be similar in scale to Sotenbori or Ryuku. He likens the development process to creating five games at the same time, and I wouldn’t doubt him for a second – cities are very hard to build.
There’s still not much info regarding when Yakuza 5 will actually hit shelves, but for now you can assume it’s quite a ways away. Late 2012 or early 2013 are probably the best-case scenarios.
But, it looks like the game that does land will be a more powerful, more interesting and more impressive version of the franchise.
What do you think about Yakuza’s extended development time? Worth it, or too long to wait?

If you’re playing Arkham City on the Xbox 360 console, you may be at risk of losing your data.
Batman: Arkham City is one of the most well received games of the year and millions of gamers have spent considerable time tracking down Riddler trophies and beating up thugs, but those gamers that chose to play the game on Xbox may find that their hours of work have been instantly destroyed by a strange bug. Whew, long sentence. Short version: your Arkham City saves are at risk.
For some reason unbeknownst to Rocksteady, the game’s developer, certain Xbox 360 users are loading Arkham City (the hardest game name to type) only to discover that their save data is completely inaccessible.
Stories started rolling in a few weeks ago of players unable to access save data, and it looks like the problem has become more than a few isolated incidents. Here’s a basic rundown of what’s happening: while the save file seems intact on the console hard drive, the game can’t read or write to it. This effectively makes it useless. Users have reported the problem coming up at random times, with some players far into the games and others just beginning.
The bad news is that Warner Bros. and Rocksteady have no idea what’s causing the problem, but the good news is that they’re working on it. You can help them suss it out by emailing support@wbgames.com with the following information, assuming you’ve experienced the problem yourself:
Which XBOX 360 are you using?
How are you storing the save file?
Which version of the 360 software do you have?
Are you running a Beta of the new dashboard?
Did the issue come up before/after installing DLC? Which DLC?
Did the issue come up before/after the two patches pushed to the game?
I’m sure they’ll get it figured out, but we’ll have to wait and see if those saves are just gone forever or recoverable. In the meantime, it may be safer to play on PS3.
What do you think of this whole mess? Are the players that lost their files entitled to some sort of compensation? Free DLC would be nice!

In news that should be surprising to absolutely zero humans, Modern Warfare 3 smashed Back Ops’ record to become the biggest entertainment launch ever.
The numbers aren’t all in for Modern Warfare 3 sales, but after tallying the numbers in the U.S. and U.K., one thing is for sure – it beat the hell out of every game preceding it. MW3, in the first 24 hours of launch an in just two of its release territories, sold an astounding 6.5 million copies.
If you’re keeping score, that’s roughly $400 million in revenue for Activision and plenty more than the $360 million generated by Black Ops or the $310 earned by Modern Warfare 2.
Bobby Kotick, the CEO gamers love to hate, noted that the Call of Duty franchise has now generated more money than the entire Star Wars and Lord of the Rings film franchises (separately). Oh, and if you’re worried about getting bored with Modern Warfare 3, don’t worry – there’s another Call of Duty coming your way next year. I feel like Activision is eventually going to burn people out on the franchise, but maybe not any time soon.
In the meantime, Modern Warfare 3 is having a war of its own over at Metacritic. While the game is hovering comfortably at around 8/10 in terms of critic scores, user scores have pegged it much lower. It’s unclear how many of the 0, 1, and 2 reviews are from people that are simply hating on the game just to do it, or from unsatisfied gamers. The one complaint I’m seeing most often? That the game could have been released as a map pack for Modern Warfare 2.
What do you think of MW3? Are you enjoying your time in the game, or is it nothing more than a fresh coat of paint?

Sony just can’t get a break from hackers as they test the login details of thousands of compromised PSN accounts.
The incredible hacking scandal that slammed PSN over the spring still leaves a bitter taste in the mouth of many gamers, and as of last night, things seem to have gotten worse. Philip Reitinger, the new Chief Information Security offer for Sony, has confirmed to users that a massive wave of account sign-in failures was detected on PSN last night, leaving the company to believe that a group of hackers is testing the login information to verify its accuracy.
More concerning is the fact that these accounts seem to be unrelated to the ones that were compromised in April, meaning Sony has another information leak that they haven’t even detected yet.
Here’s what Reitinger had to say regarding the possible breach:
We want to let you know that we have detected attempts on Sony Entertainment Network, PlayStation Network and Sony Online Entertainment ('Networks') services to test a massive set of sign-in IDs and passwords against our network database," he wrote. "These attempts appear to include a large amount of data obtained from one or more compromised lists from other companies, sites or other sources."
In this case, given that the data tested against our network consisted of sign-in ID-password pairs, and that the overwhelming majority of the pairs resulted in failed matching attempts, it is likely the data came from another source and not from our Networks.
According to Reitinger’s post on the PlayStation blog, the hack only affects about 0.1% of PSN users. This translates to around 93,000 accounts, so while it’s a low percentage, a significant number of PSN subscribers may have been impacted by the hack.
Sony is sending emails to all of the affected accounts with information regarding password changes, and wants consumers to know that credit card information is not at risk.
Still, another breach of PSN doesn’t look great for a company still trying to convince users it’s responsible enough to protect their data.

Despite a booming negative reaction from critics and fans around the web, Apple breaks its own record and proves that demand is still strong for its iPhone device.
A couple of weeks ago, the internet was all aflutter with rumors about Apple’s next big product launch. Tech lovers were certain that an iPhone 5 was on the horizon, and eagerly awaited the announcement at Apple’s “Let’s Talk Phone” event. Instead, fans of the brand simply got another iPhone 4, albeit with improved hardware. The iPhone 4S looks the same on the outside as its predecessor, but is twice as fast and boasts a more powerful battery.
Naturally, some fans felt let down by the event, hoping instead for a brand new iPhone to fawn over. Reaction was less than enthusiastic, with may iPhone owners seeing the announcement as another cash grab by Apple. These thoughts didn’t seem to have an effect on sales of the device though; the iPhone 4S is being pre-orders at a rate that eclipses that of any other device.
In the first 24 hours, consumers purchased over one million of the new 4S iPhones. The big numbers aren’t entirely a surprise – many Verizon customers were simply waiting for a new iPhone, since the 4 was relatively dated when it game to their network. Additionally, this is the first time the iPhone has been available on Sprint, so the potential customer base has expanded dramatically.
Of course, many iPhone 4 owners are still going to stay away from the product, as it doesn’t represent a significant upgrade from the previous version. A new camera with 1080p video support, faster processor and dual antenna may simply not be enough to sell another expensive phone to someone that’s had theirs for under a year.
Are you purchasing an iPhone 4S, or are you happy with your current mobile platform?

Brutal full-contact fighting makes its way from pay-per-view cable channels directly to your Xbox dashboard, starting on December 10th.
Microsoft let us know that UFC content was coming to the Xbox 360 way back in June, and details are finally surfacing on what fans can expect from the in-dashboard UFC app. So far, it’s been confirmed that you’ll be able to pay to view certain UFC matches, which makes sense considering that UFC relies heavily on pay-per-view fees to keep itself going.
Fans that use the app will be able to choose between high-def presentation, broadcast live at 720p, and standard definition, with price differences between the two formats. You won’t need to buy Microsoft Points to order a program, instead using your credit card. This will certainly be appreciated by the many gamers that aren’t particularly fond of purchasing a ton of Microsoft Points only to be left with a balance that’s only good for renting half a movie.
The app will also include on-demand video, previews of upcoming fights, weigh-ins and full fighter records for each fight. You’ll also be able to make predictions about certain fights, which will be tracked in real-time against the predictions of your friends.
Look for the UFC app on your Xbox 360 dashboard on December 1st, just after the November 15th release of the updated interface. The first fight available through the app is December 10th’s UFC 140, featuring Frank Mir vs. Antônio Rodrigo Nogueira and Jon Bones Jones vs. Lyoto Machida.
Are you planning on downloading the UFC app? Personally, I’m waiting for the next Shane Carwin match-up.

EA is gunning for a revolutionary iteration of their FIFA gaming franchise.
This is waht lead producer David Rutter divulged in an interview with 1U, wherein he also talked about the changes that they will be adding in to make it a more definitive football experience.
Among the changes they've made would be on the tackling, the dribbling, the removal of lunges, as well as the new implementation of timed interceptions and tackles if they want to make it perfect.
They're also, of course, adding in the new element of social networking to FIFA 12, care of the new Player Club Mode. One thing Rutter stressed, though, is that they're not out to make an arcade game with FIFA 12.
"We are not creating an arcade game, we are not creating something with scripted moments - we're creating something where your ability, your skill, your timing, the context, the systems within the game are there to support emergent gameplay, rather than predictable, repetitive stuff."
If you're not into this game exactly, EA has also laid out a good argument that should convince you otherwise. Plus of course the massive swag that you'll be getting if you do pre-order FIFA 12.
