PoV: Is SWTOR a WoW-Killer?

EA confirms that over two million players have logged on to test out what many are calling the most expensive game ever made, but can it possibly stop the WoW juggernaut?

Remember last week when Bobby Kotick from Activision expressed his doubts over Star Wars: The Old Republic’s profitability? Here’s your answer, Mr. Kotick: Since going into beta, over two million players have spent time in the world of SWTOR, with over nine million hours of playtime between them. This is certainly good news for EA, which has a huge, huge pile of money invested in the Bioware-helmed MMO, and it shows that when it comes to demand, Star Wars: The Old Republic is right where it needs to be.

Right now, the paid MMO market is dominated by World of Warcraft. The game still boasts 10 million players, and its expansions have seen unrivaled success. It’s a phenomenon more than a game, and challengers to the throne have never been in short supply – Aion was supposed to be the game that killed WoW, much like Warhammer Online before it. Many in the industry think that SWTOR has the potential to knock WoW from its perch, but I’m just not convinced.

The thing about MMOs is that you play them with your friends. I, for example, still play World of Warcraft because it’s how my sister and I hang out despite being a thousand miles apart. Back when I lead a guild (BWL days), it was made up of real-life friends. Hell, our main tank was my girlfriend. And I wouldn’t have left WoW to play another game unless everyone came along with me. I think quite a few people that would play SWTOR are in that position – and it’s definitely not limited to WoW players.

There are certainly going to be people that move from WoW to SWTOR. But I doubt enough people will leave one for the other to significantly impair World of Warcraft. Because, you see, that’s the distinction we have to make – sure, The Old Republic may land two, five, or even eight million subscribers, but in order for it to down WoW, those people can’t be playing both games. For The Old Republic to “win” the battle, a massive number of people will have to abandon WoW and play The Old Republic instead.

I don’t think we’re going to see that type of activity, and we’re definitely not going to see it right at launch. Then again, WoW has already lost two million subscribers this year, so anything’s possible.

Fallout: New Vegas Ultimate Edition Coming in 2012

As if Bethesda didn’t have enough to do this week, they’ve gone an announced a brand new edition of their 2010 hit.

You’d think Bethesda would be focused entirely on the upcoming launch of Skryim, but naturally they’re a big studio and they can do more than one thing at a time. We’ve just got word that Fallout: New Vegas will have an Ultimate Edition package, set to hit shelves on February 7, 2012. So fellas, if you’re looking for that perfect Valentine’s gift for your imaginary girlfriend, you’re in luck.

New Vegas Ultimate Edition will come with the original Fallout: New Vegas content as well as every downloadable content pack released since the game hit shelves. This includes Lonesome Road, Dead Money, Honest Hearts, Old World Blues, Gun Runner’s Arsenal and Courier’s Stash. The level cap will bounce up to 50 thanks to the new content, and the game will have four new areas: the Divide, Sierra Madre Casino, Big MT research crater and Zion National Park.

Based on what we’ve seen in the past, it sure seems like waiting to buy games is the most financially responsible thing you can do. Why pay $60 for a game, plus $10 per DLC when you can wait a couple of years and get the entire thing for less?

I guess it’s the curse of being an early adopter. Still, I never got a chance to play New Vegas, so maybe now’s the time. Or, well, February.

Gamers Donate £21,000 to Sick Girl Through In-App iPhone Purchases

One mobile games developer has shown what gamers can do to help the people around them and have a positive impact on the world.

Grace Windram is a five-year-old little girl that was born with spastic dyplegic cerebral palsy. The disease causes issues with her motor functions, leaving her unable to walk. Her parents were elated when she was selected to receive a complicated operation at St. Louis Children's Hospital. The operation won’t solve her problems, but along with physical therapy may allow her to someday walk on her own.

Naturally, the operation is expensive. Grace’s parents have been trying to raise money to help cover the costs, and somehow connected to Big Idea Digital, a mobile developer with a few established iOS titles under their belt. The solution Big Idea came up with is pretty simple – they added a $.99 in-app purchase to one of their popular games, Say What You See: The Collection. The new level was added in September and was titled “Grace’s Level.”

While $.99 may not sound like much at first blush, gamers managed to raise over £21,000 in the span of just about two months. With this large pile of cash rolling in from the app, Grace’s parents eclipsed their original fundraising goals and should now be able to cover the operation and the therapy that follows it.

Grace’s mother had this to say about the app and its success:

“"We will be eternally grateful for the generous support that Big Ideas has given Grace's Fund. Thanks to Big Ideas Digital, Grace can begin her journey to a better life."

So let that be a lesson to all of us gamers as we argue about Uncharted reviews and draw lines in the sand between Call of Duty and Battlefield – sometimes games can do something really extraordinary for a person in need.

Ubisoft's We Dare under fire for controversial trailer

Really, Ubisoft? You've resorted to this? It doesn't even matter if you have parental code for this game. What's even more perplexing is that We Dare has been awarded a 12+ rating. Ubisoft has released the official trailer for their latest "sexy" Wii and PS3 game, We Dare, and needless to say, it doesn't look very age appropriate.

Really, Ubisoft? You've resorted to this? It doesn't even matter if you have parental code for this game. What's even more perplexing is that We Dare has been awarded a 12+ rating.

It may look fun, yes, but it's obviously very sexual. Ubisoft has released the official trailer for their latest "sexy" Wii and PS3 game, We Dare. Back when it was first announced, the description of the game alone already called for violent reactions against parent groups. Now that the video is out, they definitely got it coming for them.

The official press release for the game's announcement claimed that We Dare is "a sexy, quirky party game that offers a large variety of hilarious, innovative and physical, sometimes kinky, challenges." From what we've seen in the video, they most certainly showed a lot of that "kinky" stuff.

Included in the lauded features of the game is the challenge to have your friend "make a flirty striptease." Again, just to put things in perspective, this has been approved for kids aged 12. The ad for the game also shows gameplay where the player will have to tuck in the Wiimote in the backside of his or her pants, and get spanked by someone else. Scenes of pole-dancing and strip-teasing were also highlighted, and although these are now being lauded as a kind of sports activity, they definitely do not exemplify sportsmanship in this highly rique context.

Parents, as expected, have already risen up in arms against the ad, and the video game itself.

"It is encouraging under-age sex," said Laura Pearson, from Birmingham. "The video pretty much shows them swapping partners, girl-on-girl kissing. That kind of thing is not something that young teenagers should be exposed to. Nintendo's Wii's are family consoles popular among children and youngsters. This is totally inappropriate."

Another parent, George Hardy, 46 years old, had this say about it: "No wonder we have problems in society with unsafe sex and under-age sex when kids can get hold of games like this.

This sort of computer game will only serve to fuel sexual tensions and, in worse-case scenario, sexual touching or assault. Imagine a room of testosterone-fuelled teenagers playing this, something could get out of hand. It sounds drastic but I could see it."

Not all parents, though, are concerned about it, so it seems. A mother of a 15-year-old boy, Sandra Betts, believes that "It's only like a modern-day spin the bottle. It's just a bit of harmless fun."

As I said, I am no square, but just to err on the side of caution, I think I would prefer to have kids play spin the bottle according to their own imaginations, and not as egged on by a video game that is obviously geared towards a very adult market.

Let kids play their games, but let them just be kids. It may be a slippery slope to say that something bad will come out of this, but the potential for abuse and harrassment really does exist, especially in a scenario like this.
