Square Enix drops details on FFXIV’s billing structure so players know what to expect as the game shifts off the F2P mechanic.
Final Fantasy XIV has officially reached the end of its forced free beta, and Square Enix seems to think they’ve finally hit a point where people will be willing to pay to play. They announced the shift back to a regular subscription model about a month ago – now they’re ready to move forward with the change.
Here’s what that means for current players: As of January 5th, your FFXIV account will be suspended until you opt back into the billing system. Monthly fees will be set at $9.99 until the release of FFXIV 2.0, the updated version of the MMO, at which point they’ll bump up to $12.99. You’ll also need to pay $3.00 per extra character on your account – the basic subscription covers only one main character.
If you play FFXIV, you may want to check out their official site to get a bearing on what to expect. Then again, it’s pretty basic MMO stuff. You pay money; you get to play the game. The real question is whether players will be willing to shift from F2P back to a subscription model.
Do you think players will pay for FFXIV, or did the game already miss its chance?

The legendary game creator announces his desire to change roles at Nintendo, but Nintendo vehemently denies that he’ll be swapping posts.
Last night, the internet exploded with news that Shigeru Miyamoto was retiring from his current position at Nintendo. While not leaving the company or the games industry, Miyamoto stated that he wanted to leave the huge franchises like Zelda and Mario to teams of younger developers so that he could go on to work on smaller projects with shorter development times. He even mentioned his love for the guy that created the Rubik’s cube.
The news was interesting, to be sure – Miyamoto clearly wants to work closer to the cutting edge of development, rather than as the guy who steers multi-billion dollar franchises. But I’m guessing Nintendo’s shareholders weren’t too happy with the information, because the company has issued a stern denial:
"This is absolutely not true.  There seems to have been a misunderstanding. He has said all along that he wants to train the younger generation.
"He has no intention of stepping down. Please do not be concerned."
Nintendo is clearly trying to calm investor fears that the man responsible for most of the company’s success would be stepping into a position with less responsibility, despite the fact that the original interview seemed pretty clear about Miyamoto’s intent.
There’s obviously a small chance this whole thing is a translation error, but the odds of that are miniscule. More likely, Miyamoto has been planning this type of move for years and perhaps announced it before Nintendo had time to do the proper legwork with investors.
We’ll just have to see how the story plays out. In the meantime, what would you think of a Zelda or Mario project without Miyamoto’s oversight?

The CEO of Activision Blizzard stirs up an old feud by hinting that EA is making a mistake with the Star Wars MMO.
Activision and EA have been feuding for years. It’s what you would expect from the two largest game companies in the world, and sometimes it has hilarious results. In its most recent incarnation, the two companies went head to head in a very forced battle for FPS supremacy as they launched Battlefield 3 and Modern Warfare 3 just weeks apart from one another.
Now, Activision seems to be taunting EA, ever so subtly, by suggesting that their multi-million dollar MMORPH Star Wars: The Old Republic, won’t be benefiting them financially. Activision CEO Bobby Kotick, aka the man gamers love to hate, made a couple of statements regarding the game at the Reuters Media Summit.
In short, he claimed that George Lucas is usually the person that benefits from the Star War property, and that he doesn’t really understand how EA plans to make any money off the game. He also noted that companies that invest in MMORPGs are rarely successful.
Kotick is probably right about the significant sum of money going to Lucas, and he’s definitely right about the difficulties of creating a successful MMO – although for the record, he and Activision had no hand in developing World of Warcraft and even, quite famously, passed on an early opportunity to purchase Blizzard for a pittance.
Still, one has to wonder what Kotick hopes to achieve by starting another fight with EA. It gives the impression that he’s actually concerned about the Star Wars title, especially with the recent news that World of Warcraft is bleeding subscribers. EA predicts that they can turn a profit on The Old Republic with just 500,000 players – I don’t think they’ll have a problem getting to that number.
What do you think?

Most of the big stuff has come out already, but there are still plenty of new games to play in this week’s edition of “On Shelves.”
It looks like the crazy holiday release schedule is finally slowing down, with most of the major releases already on shelves and waiting to be picked up. But the games industry is an ever-moving beast, and there are still quite a few games scheduled for release in the upcoming week.
Who knows, some of them might even be good! But when an iPhone game is the biggest launch of the week, don’t expect any miracles.
Here’s your list of releases, organized in no way at all:
Infinity Blade II
iPhone, iPad
ESRB N/A
Epic Games
Heavy Fire: Afghanistan – The Chosen Few
PC, Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, 3DS
ESRB Teen
Mastiff
Steel Armor – Blaze of War
PC
ESRB RP
Play Indie
Jaws: Ultimate Predator
Wii, 3DS
ESRB Teen
Majesco Studios
Small World Tunnels
PC
ESRB RP
Days of Wonder
Face Racers: Photo Finish
Nintendo 3DS
ESRB E
Majesco
Combat Arms: Zombies
iPhone
ESRB N/A
Nexon
That’s pretty much it for this week. There are a few other minor titles coming out, but honestly Infinity Blade II is the only thing on this list I had even heard of before today. GameSpot’s list is missing box art for 2/3s of the list.
Looks like this may be the break everyone needed for Skyrim!
