Nintendo E3 Booth

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) is thinking of getting rid of E3 and creating a new expo - if you could call it that. The new convention would be considerably smaller. This would mean that the number of attendees would be in the hundreds and not in the thousands as they currently are. Not only that, but the show would be moving from the 540,000 square feet Los Angeles Convention Centre to a smaller venue. Instead of large exhibits, like the elaborate Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess booth in 2004, we'll be getting small meeting rooms in which the press is demoed games.

Why is this being done? Well, the costs associated with E3 is becoming a concern for some publishers. Travel costs, living expenses during the show, and the costs of hiring the large amount of staff members is a bit pricey. A smaller show would mean less people travelling, staying in hotels, and nobody needed to walk around booths looking pretty and helping out gamers with games.

There are considerable downsides as well though. The Los Angeles hotel and service industry makes an estimated $50 million (USD) during E3. They'd be hit pretty bad by this change. Smaller publishers will also be hurting because they wouldn't be able to get some of that meeting space in a smaller venue. They'll need to find a different way to market their games without E3.

It might be better for some press members who hate the environment of E3 in its present form, but I don't think this change benefits gamers too much. It seems to be aimed at increasing the profits of the big publishers while giving a kick in the shins to smaller developers and gamers. The official word is expected tomorrow. What do you guys think?

"Oh my god! We're so greedy, we don't want to pay for our trips to E3 to show off our games anymore!"

That's exactly how I'm interpreting their "complaints" about the costs to live and stay in hotels during E3. They haven't gone bankrupt after all these years of being in E3, so why complain now.

This would be the worst thing to happen to gamers. E3 is looked forward to by millions every single year; either for that chance to go, or just to learn about what's being shown. For years, E3 has been the ULTIMATE gamer's expo, showing off new technology, games, and so on to the public. Without it, gaming anouncements wouldn't be nearly as exciting. And what about the huge E3 press conferences? Would those disappear as well? This would be a massive blow to ever single gamer out there.

Well thank god I got to go to a few of these before they started to think of cancelling it. Oh well at least there is still the Toyoko show unless they think of getting rid of that too. E3 is a fantastic event and they need to keep it. It keeps gamers excited about their hobby.

This would be a huge mistake!
This shows off all the games at the one time, a huge tradition of gamers. I was soo wanting to go in the future.
I think they will get rid of it for one year, the companies will loose huge ammounts of money due to the lack of coverage of their games etc. and it will go back to normal.

 » so what !!!

Keep things to the level ....... its not E3 that makes or breaks games or developers its the customer, and as far as i see things i live in france but am from the UK and i cant see myself getting bothered because a huge media based show gets dropped!!!!!! i cant go to the E3, i see it on the news and the news tells me about big companies, sony etc. i would rather get my news from those that know what really is going on like in Qj.net and other places like here. E3 can sell things but do they tell me how to make the best of what i bought ? i dont think so.

» Im not sure what to say

With E3 costs escalating over the years, everyone trying to out do one another, the the meaning of such a large event would slowly be overturned. With the falling US economy, by this I mean a war thats only being fought to save face now resulting in raising gas prices because of international relations dropping and military costs raising. How long does our president current 2nd term president have left? 2-3 years? By the end of this presidential term well be at a point were it will take another 2 term to put our economy on a possitive track at the very least.

So in 8-10 years again we may be doing better as a nation, but for now there are cuts that need to be made in every industry. The falling of E3 is just one of those parts, if i remember correctly E3 started off small and has slowly grown into the giant it is today. Like in nature, a lifeform has to either reach a stabilitly in growth and nurishment to sustain itself or it will start dieing of starvation or regecting parts of itself. If we compair E3 to a feild, starting off with lush hills of grass and quickly taking on trees at an excellerated rate, the nutrience in the soil by be better protected and increase, but there is a limit to how much it can increase the soils nutirence in proportion to the fields inhabitants needs, ie trees and grass. If to many trees take root the land suffers and begind to decay to try and return nurishment for its next cycle.

What im trying to say here is that if people voice their opinions convice gaming companies to reach an equalibrium with the current economics instead of an over excellerated growth to try and out do one another then it can be saved. If not then E3's death will bring nurishment to a new convention, that may be smaller and more stable, and in a few presidential terms when the economics return well have another E3 on our hands.

OK, I saw this on Kotaku ages ago and it isn't definate. It will probably never happen. E3 is too much of a big expo for them to just get rid of. Everyone knows what E3 is. Its a landmark in the gaming industry. It will never happen.

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!

I WAS GOING TO GO TO THE NEXT E3!

I swear to GOD I'll help protest if they take down E3.
There's no reason to take E3 away from us besides costs. Don't they make money with E3, too? They would lose money moving to a smaller venue and taking down the E3 name!!!!

 » Oh well

I've been going to E3 for the past 7yrs and I will admit that it has gotten increasingly worst. Each year there are more and more fanboys and less and less industry and media people. It has become a joke with the both babes and whatnot. I do enjoy the exclusive hands on game meetings and testing. Hopefully this will open doors for the three console makers to have their own shows and avoid the geek factor. Everytime I go to an E3 I have to go back home and wash the stench of looser off me that permeates that place, it's just sad.
