XNA is fun if you know how...

You want to get into games, but don't know where to begin? You started learning about programming, but now you're lost in the wilderness of computing? Well, Microsoft has good news for you, XNA Game Studio Express has reached Beta 2 status and is now up for download!

For those who haven't heard of it, think of the software as a company-made homebrew machine for people who want to see where their knowledge of gaming, programming, design can take them without having to start completely from scratch. You can also grab the XNA framework for Beta 2, which lets you test the games you've made on XNA through Windows. Beta 2 is the next-to-final version of both the game making software and the framework, and the final version will allow people to move their XNA games onto the XBox 360 for both play and trade, so long as you also pay for XNA Creators Club Membership.

In addition to XNA, a closed beta of additional tools created by Garage Games will also be online. Known as TorqueX, the suite adds additional functionality to the XNA system, allowing programming newbies like myself to use a drag-and-drop interface instead.

Just so you guys know, whoever made Ponies and Kittens for the PSP better be making an XNA version of the thing, or I'm going to be very sad!

Microsoft kicks ass with it's XNA!

We wanted homebrew, this is their solution.

Atleast they thought about us :)

The XNA coding enviroment has unlimited possibilities. Can't wait to see what kind of brew people can make up with this. Emulators anyone?

I'm not sure how likely emualtors are... There would have to be a way to get the ROM to the machine. Maybe via a website or something, I guess. I can't imagine MS would be so dumb as to allow unlimited access to the HD... And probably not even limited access.

We'll see, though... Could be interesting. I'm looking forward to trying my hand a few cheezy games, too.

you see the thing is, that it uses C++ to code games (in advanced mode) and games usually use a folder structure just like windows. It is very possible to do it, just make the emulator read from a certain folder, allow browsing through roms. would take a while to actually make, but time will tell us.

microsoft actually released some source code of certain old games for XNA brewers to toy with, maybe make a game of their own.

You have made some assumptions. You are assuming that the games are not packaged before they are sent to the 360. I'm assuming they will be.

If they are packaged, you'll have to include the ROMs in the package itself, which would be a serious pain to redistribute.

If everyone has to make their own package of the emu, it won't be very popular. It costs $100 a year to be a developer with XNA and create games on the 360.

microshaft only made this thing up so they could get a degree of compatablility between the 360 and pc and therefore games made for both these will be easy to port to the other.

Sounds great but being mainly a pc gamer i think we`ll end up with dumbed down console ports as in the COD 3 game..graphic indicators for grenades? damn thats just soooo console.
