Xbox Live update due this week! - Image 1

Although we can't tell for sure if the update includes the rather controversial Live Dashboard update we covered recently, we're definitely sure that an update is coming. According to the announcement on Xbox.com, we can expect the update within the week of May 7, which will expand the reach of social networking over to users of Windows Live Messenger.

Jerry Johnson, product unit manager of Xbox LIVE at Microsoft, said, "Bringing the largest IM community in the world, Windows Live Messenger, to Xbox 360 makes sense, as Xbox LIVE has really become the largest social network on television." Microsoft will be creating a more social experience for Windows Live and Xbox Live users with the new update.

In addition, Windows Live users will be treated to features that would entice them to grab an Xbox 360, while connecting them to an online community of over six million. Expect the QWERTY input device to make a debut this summer to streamline the IM experience. In addition to the preview of features and fixes we covered before, the update will also sport the following:
  • The name of game in tray is now displayed in the dashboard.
  • When the user is in the dashboard and an Xbox 360 game is in the console then the name of the game is displayed in the tray icon of the dashboard. If the user highlights the tray icon then achievements and gamer score are displayed for that game based on the signed in user. Xbox1 games show the name and image of the game.
  • Integrated support for the new Xbox 360 text input device. Note that this device includes a new wired headset.
  • Playback progress bar indicates download completion.
  • Switchable aspect ratio now available during video playback (Auto to Letterbox, Zoom, Stretch, Native).
  • Player and friends lists now quickly show session presence information for quick identification of users that are joinable.
  • Added H.264 video support: Up to 10 Mbps peak, Baseline, Main, and High profiles with 2 channel AAC LC.
  • Added MPEG-4 Part 2 video support: Up to 5 Mbps peak, Simple Profile with 2 channel AAC LC.
  • Show folder hierarchy for video content played from all devices.
  • Bookmarks are stored for each video that the user plays remembering the users last location in the file as well as the aspect ratio that the user choose for that file.
  • Video trick modes (fast forward, rewind, chapter skip) can now be used while downloading Video Marketplace content.
  • Skip forward and backward functionality has been improved to skip to the next or previous chapter. Each video is divided into 10 “chapters” allowing you to quickly skip around video content.
  • The information bar that is turned on via the On Screen Display (OSD) now shows you exactly where you are in the playback of the video file.  In addition it will also show for Video Marketplace content how much of the file has been downloaded and where the “chapters” exist in the file.
  • Windows Media protected content (WM-DRM) can now be streamed from the PC to the console. If the WM-DRM license is missing or corrupted then a specific error message is displayed to the user. Bookmarking is also stored for protected content.
  • When a user selects an item for download from Marketplace then the system will determine if there is sufficient disk space for the item and, if not, will ask the user to delete content on the HDD. The system provides a sorted by size list of videos, game trailers, demos and arcade content to aid the user in the deletion process. The same list of items are also available from within memory so that users can quickly see which items are consuming the most disk space.
  • The console will block the user who attempts to download content onto a storage device that will never have the capacity to store the item without deducting any points associated with the content item.
  • The screensaver is disabled when playing photos from any source

New block for Backup games?

There is a gosship with that update the MS will be able to block backup games in modded drivers, and you need to update to xtreme firmware 5.3 to not be detected.

Is that true?

Im gonna wait a few days with this one. The fall update bricked my console (no, it was not opened, flashed or whatever). I suggest u guys do the same.

by qwewe - 2007-05-07 00:28
Bricked? yer right

Yer of course it did, go read news on PS3 instead of posting here, i .e there is no PS3 games in the Japanese charts as in NONE but there is TWO 360 titles..

Expect the usual whiners

Good update list and expect the #But it killed my 360 crowd#... (they wont mention its proberly because they flashed their firmware though)....

by Chris - 2007-05-07 00:35
..

Wtf are you talking about? PS3 charts? why would I give a ***** about ps3 charts or games. What does it have to do with my post.

by Chris - 2007-05-07 01:22
..

You´re just ignorant, the "fall update killed my xbox" thread on XBOX.com had over 150 000 views before MS deleted it. Me and thousands of other unmodded xbox users were *****ed by MS. My friend over at EB Games told me they recieved hundreds of consoles after the fall update from people who got their consoles bricked.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-05-07 03:26
chris is full of s*it

I highly doubt the famous fall update bricked unmodified consoles, but I'm still waiting a couple weeks later to update.

"Me and thousands of other unmodded xbox users were *****ed by MS."

That's funny, because I read on XBOX.com that they paid to fix all consoles affected by the update.

I don't know anybody who modded their console, and I don't know anybody who had their console brick, so I would say your claim about knowing someone at EB that said "hundreds" of consoles were returned that were bricked is BS. INCREDIBLE BS!

Even if it did brick by the update, MS said it would fix all consoles affected. So, by getting f*cked by them, you just had to send it back to them and wait?

by Chris - 2007-05-07 04:21
...

Well Im not full of *****. MS has NEVER officially said that they were responsible for all those consoles. I bought my console at launch day so it was to old to be fixed for free. I did get a new reciept from my friend at EB Games so I just returned my console to the store and claimed that I had just bought it so they gave me a new one.

The fall update

The Fall update did brick unmodded consoles for the following reason: The Fall update contained a code to check the firmware on a drive, nothing to do with commadore4eva, simply looking for MS25 (early firmware) and MS28 (later firmware). The reason being, Microsoft could see the signature on the motherboard, not the flashed drive, and if that was signed to MS28, then anyone using MS25 would have had to have downgraded thier drive (Commadores hacked firmware was based on MS28). However, Microsoft failed to realise that certain legitimate Xbox owners had bought a particular console where the signatures didnt match on the production line, thus, these unlucky few thousand found there Xboxs bricked with the update, due to a poor plan by microsoft. this cannot happen with the spring update as it will be a higher number than MS28, so an UPGRADE has been performed, not a DOWNGRADE.

i

PS3's don't have to worry about bricks... haha, ps home is coming, and a bunch of games too. PSN will be awesome after a few updates and noone will buy a 360...

by Lemony Vengeance - 2007-05-07 11:38
if only...

Sony is getting their collective asses handed to them in the online gaming battle. XBL has been available since 2002 or 2003 and has had their tough times, but has become the worlds largest online gaming arena. They've learned from their mistakes. Sony, on the other hand, is plagarizing on other copmanies technology and ideas in order to even compete with them and for what? A handfull of crappy launch titles and slowly trickling post launch games. Can you name a single game that has driven the demand for a PS3 higher? No. They're even losing their exclusivity. But that might change in time... IF MGS4 ever comes out, but that's a long shot. Sony, and their horrible copy of XBL, the PSN, will never beat microsoft.

by john - 2007-05-07 16:25
Prrety simple really

I'm not gonna side with either of you and have nothing against you, but if you really didn't understand what he was trying to say you're an idiot.

He is insinuating that you a PS3 fan trying to make the Xbox look bad, hence "go read PS3 news" and hence the thing about the charts (the PS3 is doing bad in its home country, so he's using that as a comeback, since he believes you are a PS3 fanboy)

by PhreakyMopho - 2007-05-07 17:38
Never say never

PS network could eventually overtake XBL. Hell, so could the Wii online service when it's up. But that's all hypothetical. M$ has had a looooong head start, and right now their product is hands down better than anything that anyone has dished out. That playstation home crap isn't going to grab people. At best, it's a retarded idea.

by Alex - 2007-05-07 17:40
Wow

Anything starts a platform battle these days, huh? It's *****ing pathetic. Anywho, this update looks pretty bad ass. I can't wait to be able to finally stream my video podcasts. MP4 support is cool. I'm waiting for Divx and Xvid, but I doubt those will be available, ever. Too easy to stream illegally downloaded movies with that format.

I hope we get it soon.

by boxxer - 2007-05-07 18:15
cool

but they need to implement internet explorer 7 or at least a modded browser version for the box.

by werwe - 2007-05-07 21:15
360 should not have browser

Seriously why on earth would you want your games machine to go on the internet?, dont you get a bit tired of it sometimes when overusing it on the PC already?, 360 is about Games first that is why it will always sell better than consoles that seem to be trying to push everything other than games on their console..

by Stu M - 2007-05-09 06:34
grrr.

I get so frustrated when I read comments from users that say "why would you want to use your xbox 360 for internet? it's all about games, yadda yadda".....I agree in part, the xbox 360 is a gaming console, HOWEVER....it will NEVER progress further than that if people keep squashing all the good ideas like incorporating internet functionality. I particularly want to see a version of internet explorer on my xbox 360 simply so I can stream videos and things from the internet on my xbox 360! on my big screen TV! and check my e-mails, surf the web, it's a pain having to quickly jump on my computer when I'm wanting to visit the xbox forums or ign or something like that, sure security would be an issue, as it always is with anything IE related but it can be overcome if the work was put in.
