I've got the same problem this very weekend. The thing is I don't have any new games or updates in more than 2 months! Thing go from full color to an ugly 8-bit like color, if you restart your 360 it will go to the aforementioned blackscreen (with a few white noise artifacts). Strangely enough after a few hours it seems to go away, and sometimes it just plays fine. So I'm suspecting a failure in the video-card. Any clues?

One Question to XBox Owners

after the black out does the console become unusable and repairs needed??? or is it one of those its-just-acting-up-but-will-be-ok-later-on types??? i'm sorry to say this but the 360 is proving to be a cheap product... and no amount of denial by XBox fans can change that fact... it would help if people don't unreasonably just defend the XBox just for the purpose of winning forum discussions against PS3 owners... the problem must be acknowlegde and Microsoft should be forced to face the music!!!! people covering it up isn't helping solve the problem which WE CAN ALL AGREE is there...

Why do PS3 fantards suddenly appear when this is a 360 owner site? Isn't this where 360 owners are supposed to discuss a problem they could have? PS3 owner: "I need these great 360 games to come to the PS3 so I'll just make the 360 out to be a peice of s*it so nobody will buy it anymore" Too late there, nobody buys the PS3 anymore. Except quixand, never seen anybody buy 3 0 doorstops in my life. I know so many people with perfectly fine 360s. happened to me when playin forza last night, i did the exhibition races to get the 75pts of achievements, and on the last one, soon as i hit the finish line, black screen. not even the guide button worked, that race took me like 20min to do, i waited for teh screen to go back and hoping to hear that sound when u unlock an achievement, but no luck. had to restart the xbox and do the race over AGAIN, for it finally to work.

Making Progress

This problem is GPU related. It's the same source as the 3ROL problem, just a different result. Sony has their own problems with their products. The slim PS2 was a huge problem child for Sony. And remember the exploding batteries? Microsoft has already reduced the issue in new and recent boxes and has improved their repair process with a new heatsink to remove the overheating of the GPU in older boxes. They extended their warranty to 12 months on all consoles and an even longer on launch consoles. They are offering free pick up and delivery services. As I said before, they have fixed the defect in new and repaired consoles to reduce the failure rate. What else do you expect them to do? Announce that 5% of 360's are having a heating problems and commit media suicide? Even Sony wouldn't be that stupid. It's only a small percentage of people that have problems, and if those that have problems get it repaired, big deal. I strongly beleive that there is 9 to 9.5 million 360 owners out there that haven't had a single problem with their 360s. It's still the best console on the market. I know a Sony supporter like yourself wouldn't agree but the fact is most industry experts agree that the 360 is the leading gaming platform at this point in this generation. It's NOT a cheap product. I bet you there will be a couple of hundred thousand with PS3 owners that are playing on a HDTV with the included composite cable thinking they are playing in "High Definition" this generation. And PS3 owners playing Resistance or Motorstorm in 480p on a 1080i HDTV set because the PS3 can't upscale a 720p game to 1080i. Will Sony acknowledged bluetooth drops and re-syncing issues people are having with their controllers? No they aren't. I know MS is working on the problem so that's good enough for me. Most people that have problems are just happy to get it repaired. i rarely hear anyone saying they are going to sell their 360 and buy a Wii or a PS3. That's because they have had a good experience with the platform and are willing to deal with a repair if they have problems. So to summary up my crappy rant so you sony loyalist can give me a sad face rating: Yes some gamers are having problems. Most gamers aren't. MS has been working on the issue. The failure rate on new and repaired consoles has been greatly reduced. The 360 is still the best console on the market.

This might be a problem but not a widespread problem...maybe 10-15% at tops or maybe it is lower than that I don't have a 360 but I still wonder is there something wrong with the hardware? software? or is it something the users did? but anyway this problem could be solved one way or another

Fixed the box!

I never had any problems with overheating or the 3RL in my 360, but my warranty expired so I wanted to keep it running cool and in working order so this is what I did. I ordered the XCM cooling fan upgrade kit with digital temperature gauge along with some atctic silver 5 and arcticlean thermal surface remover for about $90 with shipping. The XCM kit came with good instructions and a tool to remove the outer plastic shell, but getting the heatsinks off was somewhat difficult. I found an online tutorial for that at http://www.informit.com/articles/article.asp?p+430626+rl+1. You need a T8 and T10 torx bit. You must be very careful how you remove the X clamps on the bottom of the circuit board and not pry against it. There is a tutorial to clean the old heatsink compound and apply the new at: http://forums.xbox-scene.com/index.php?showtopic+467045 . The XCM fan kit comes with good instructions. I also removed the top metal RF shielding, since it acts like a heat insulator. These mods made my 360 much much cooler. My disc isn't even warm when I remove it after playing the XBOX for hours! Plus my 360 makes a cool blue glow and I can see how hot everything is and the temp gauge is detachable. It's louder but oh well if you notice that you aren't enjoying the game.

Uhm, My console is a Launch console, I have NEVER had it hiccup. Not even over heating, nothing. The only thing that happened that made it freeze was I was in the courtyard in Dead Rising, and there was HUNDREDS of flesh eating Zombies on the screen, and the damn convicts came rolling up on me with the machine guns blazing. A zombie grabbed me and forced me to the ground and I had a trippy effect where I could see almost every zombie on screen and the flare from the machine gun covered the screen and froze RIGHT there. I don't blame it, my PC couldn't do any better.

I heard so many problems about this damn system im not even going to bother. Im just going to stick with my WIIIIIIIi. I seen my friend's xbox and it looked like it was on steroids lmao. Had the cooler in the back the USB extension, some crap that held games on the side, keyboard, the selector look alike, and a HD DVD drive made it look like his 360 is getting rapped from all the crap he has for it and the system just got the 3 red rings of death and hes trying to take the thing back now. Problems

Yea, Experianced this too, Was playing (Test Drive Unlimited) Console was on for 5 mins, MAX. Got the Red Rings of death and the Screen Blacked out, I get no Video at all, No Sound....

It's probably the same thing that happens when the motherboard gets hot, the cpu seperates from the board. It's also happening with the chip that controls the video. Microsoft needs to redesign the whole architecture because it runs to hot for such a small confined space.

By the time the PS3 actually has games (if it survives that long) a new version XBOX 360 will be out with the new 65nm chips and the reliability issues will be fixed. The new GPU heatsink is evidence MS is working to fix the problem in the older design.

They could have done that with the Elite, yet they chose to stay with their shoddy original design. That is why M$ refuses to say anything on the failure rate of their system. Instead they concentrate on the customer support you get when you finally have to call in to have your system repaired. M$ has never been about reliability. Happened to me right before my 360 died

Yesterday, I was playing The Outfit (hey, I got it for free, so I figured I may as well try it out...) and there was this weird green shadow over all of the characters and vehicles. I could still play, but I thought it was just a problem with the disc or something. I went back that evening to play, and when I turned on my 360, I received an error plus one red light. I called customer support and they're having me send the console back to them. At least I'm under warranty....

I have four friends and I that bought the 360 at launch and have had no problems at all (maybe a few lockups, but I have not personally had a lock up for months). But on the other hand I have 2 friends that have PS3's and said that they can't play Motorstorm for over an hour without the console locking up everytime. Maybe if there were PS3's being sold you might actually hear about the problems with the PS3 also (oh wait Sony has even stated that they don't care if the PS3 wins as long as Blu-Ray wins, so they don't even make good enough games for me to even want to buy it).

I find it interesting that people say wait for PS3 problems when the 360 had problems right out of the gate. If you watch the Smashmyxbox.com video, a Best Buy employee came out and warned everybody in line (minutes before the 360 launch) that there are reported problems and suggested that they make sure that they get warranties and such just incase they got screwed. Which is sad because I'd definatly like to get a 360 sometime, but as long as these problems are crazy like this, I'd rather not take the risk. Now, will the PS3 get problems as it's life progresses, who knows. My PS1 and PS2 work and they're about 10 and 5 years old by the way. As for the games, it's all a matter of personal opinion. I see the 360 mainly for it's 360 exclusive games like Gears of War, Halo 3, and Mass Effect and I have my PC to play the FPS games and then the PS3 for everything else.
