Xbox 360 to get Rosetta@Home? |
Ó
While Xbox 360 owners may not be able to help out with the Folding@Home project just yet, another similar program may come to Microsoft's next gen videogame console.
Gizmodo's Adam Frucci has raised a very legitimate idea that the Rosetta@Home project - which works like Folding@Home and may ultimately help in the fight against HIV/AIDS, cancer, Alzheimer's disease, malaria and many other diseases - may be coming to the XBox 360 in the future. All of Frucci's arguments so far are not yet based on hard evidence, but they do carry a bit of weight. Let's list them down:
- Bill Gates, Microsoft's founder, is a staunch supporter in the fight against AIDS. He has also publicly stated that he believes the AIDS vaccine will be found in his lifetime, so unless he's got some immortality serum stashed away, he's all for helping speed up the process - something that Rosetta@Home can help make a reality
- Rosetta@Home received over US$ 10 million from the Gates Foundation last year for HIV research
- Last year, Rosetta@Home head scientist and developer David Baker said on the project's message boards that they "have been discussing [using Xbox 360 consoles to help with the project] with Microsoft quite a bit over the past several weeks."

i still do not understand what HIV/AIDS has to do with a videogame system and why people are getting excited about it. it is an important issue but has nothing to do with an xbox or ps3.
I think that donating processing capacity to science for beneficial scientific research would be of great benefit to humanity. I've just added folding at home to my PS3.
that when u aren't using your system why not use the computing power that helps a good cause. Although like Karl B. states leaving a 360 on all night could be a bad thing. The "Elite" would have been elite to me if it had water cooling like some modders are doing. that would be big.
360 need 2 get off ps3 nuts
humanity instead of being a damn consumer all the time. The only people I think who can't get their head around using their system to compute proteins to help fight deadly diseases are children and adults who are so self-centered and dead inside that they can't care about anyone else except themselves. But again, the PS3 is more than reliable enough to run 24/7 folding if I'm not playing. I don't trust my 360 to work every single time I turn it on. Therefore add another category to my previous statement, maybe the 360 isn't reliable enough to leave on 24/7 running Rosetta.
There's 2 things wrong with this: 1) "have been discussing [using Xbox 360 consoles to help with the project] with Microsoft quite a bit over the past several weeks." That's a LOT of words to put into someone's mouth. Maybe it -can- be infered, but changes bits of quotes is usually a small thing, not over half the quote. 2) "There are still people who are concerned about screwing up their consoles if they leave them on 24/7, but overall, it seems that Xbox 360 owners are really gung-ho about helping out with some protein folding." And they OUGHT to be! 360's overheat if you LOOK at the wrong! Everyone I know that has one has a fan blowing at/on/across it to keep it from overheating during long play sessions. Games don't typically use 100% of the power of the unit. This will. It'll all end in tears, I tell you.
Everyone you know ? Only on the internet do you hear this bull*****, everyone I know(IN REAL LIFE) has NO extra fans or any heating problems. And what you going to moan about when the cool and quite ELITE is released ? im sure you will find something else that your (internet)friends!! have problems with
