Xbox 360 to get DivX/Xvid support?

DivXNow even though it's generally pointless to talk about rumors, more so when it's something completely unexpected, this was one of those for which we would actually pray for it to be true. Many of you might not know the fact that Microsoft regularly keeps seminars for the retailer staff so that they can get more familiar with their products. It's good for Microsoft because they can talk to the people who will be at the desk selling them Xbox 360s. And for the staff, it's great because they can get early news and tips from the folks at Microsoft.

And it is at one of these seminars that the guys over at Xlife.nl were able to get a huge scoop. Now our dutch is a bit rough, so we'll let the guys over at Xboxic handle the translation. This, by the way, is one of the Xlife employees narrating the incident.

"After the event I had a short talk with the host and asked him whether thereÂ’d ever be support for DivX and Xvid playback. Much to my surprise he started telling me that Microsoft is working hard to implement this and a firmware update is expected within 2 months allowing you to play DivX and Xvid directly on the 360."

Now there's three probabilities.
  • The host simply spilled the beans on one of the biggest news in the last few months regarding the Xbox 360.
  • He simply didn't know what he was talking about. Hey! It has happened before.
  • Or Microsoft wanted to let the news spread virally through the Internet.
Now all three are very real probabilities. My guess is the second though. The fact that he was so up-front about it makes me feel that he either didn't know of Microsoft's strategy, or maybe, the guys over at Xlife simply misheard him. Either way, this is one of those things which we really hope were true. Until now, there has been no proper solution for viewing DivX or Xvid movies on the Xbox 360. I personally use Transcode 360, and even though it does its job properly, it doesn't work properly on Windows Vista. Lets just hope that Microsoft can do this. Stay tuned for the latest updates!

» no chance !!!

there's no chance of this happening, microsoft has its own so called version of divx (wmv) which has the ability of having its content protected.

but i believe this lie was allowed to be spread to hurt sony playstation 3 and nintendo wii sales

» Transcode 360?

Hi, just wondering... I have a PC running the second Vista beta, but had no luck (despite hours of trying) getting it to connect to the X360 for any video playback. How have you managed it?

» @PeanuT

Even though on Vista, it doesn\'t work as supposed, there are a few workarounds to get some kind of streaming.

» Divx DRM

Divx also has DRM to 'protect content'. That's not the issue.

The issue is that MS is used to being able to force people to use their formats. And they'll do that, here, too. I would love it if the 360 played Divx, but I'm not holding my breath.

» MS not allowing

Well MS did allow iPods to run on 360, so why not. But we'll wait and see

» Probably wont happen the way people think

Microsoft has always been a company to be very strict on its media formats. The only way the Zune would be competitive against the Ipod is if they allowed it to play MP3s. So thats why its allowed.

In terms of the Xbox360. I forsee the Divx playback as a file you can download from Divx and play it back on your Xbox360. Its like renting a divx file, most DVD players with Divx support have them now. You have a special Hardware ID code and you goto the Divx.com and make an account with your ID code. Then when you download a divx file, it will only play on that player for a limited time.

Microsoft would never be stupid enough to offer free open playback of Divx files with the HD-DVD comming out. Thats like telling Toshiba, were screwing you over, no one will buy a $200 add-on when they can download high quality Divx files for free.

I wouldnt hold my breath for Divx playback, for one I already have it on my upscaling DVD player that plays all divx files. They probably wouldnt bother paying the licensing fees to Divx to make it available to millions of Xbox360s. Microsoft didnt become rich by giving away stuff for free.

» Please

This would be awsome, MS please please please do this, kick sony in the face, and then beat them silly.

» I agree...

That this will not happen....maybe just regular old .avi files, since that's an MS invention, but I doubt divx will be supported.

I would be happy with being able to stream even .wmv, not much quality loss and it would be hard to batch convert my movies. That or just basic MPG/MP4 ala PSP would also be nice.....anything really, other then HD movies through Media centre....That's the other biggie, will you need media centre or vista, please make it work with media connect....or be able to transfer movies to the 360's HDD.....dreams are nice....
