Xbox 360 update - Image 1

If you're a Preview Program member and you've been saving backup files from your Xbox 360 on an another storage device, read this now. This is important. An Xbox 360 system update is coming next week, and one of the changes is that all storage devices that are not officially-licensed for the Xbox 360 will no longer work with the console.

Info comes from Major Nelson himself, who posted at his blog:

When Preview Program members start receiving the Xbox 360 system update next week, one of the changes is that unauthorized Memory Units will no longer work with the Xbox 360. If you’ve moved your profile or saved games onto one to “back it up,” you’d better move it back onto an authorized Xbox 360 storage device prior to taking the update. If you continue to use an unauthorized Memory Unit after the update, you will not be able to access your stored profile or saved games.

No specific reason was given as to the change, but it does look pretty clear that you're gonna have to get an Xbox 360 storage device for that spare memory.

Thanks Gurka R!

What kind of bull***** is Microsoft pulling now?

There is absolutely no point in this other than them trying to make people pissed off and sell proprietary ***** at outrageous prices.

by phiyuku - 2009-10-17 08:49
Awww does

that mean my modified Hard Drive from 20GB to 120GB won't work now. Way to ruin the fun Microsoft.

by Bountyhunter53 - 2009-10-17 08:59
Well.....

Normally for MS its shell out or F off. But I didn't catch that they would go the extra mile by killing the memory units which worked after modifying it.

My exact thoughts are that they found a exploit in the modified memory bit or they kinda clocked that 20GB hard drives orignals are selling out faster than 120GB originals.

Lifes tough for a 360 fan or user.

by Silver-Tiger - 2009-10-17 10:43
....

way to monopolize the 360 market for their own overpriced peripherals. hah, I laugh at the people who thought MS would go a different route on the 360 than on Windows.

I'm not the least suprised.

by Nebbulluss_x - 2009-10-17 11:24
haha!

Dats some funny ass ***** ms doing to you man, i think you guys sue!

by narutosaiyan - 2009-10-17 13:41
wait wait wait

does this mean no flash drives, ipods, externals, or anything other than zunes? because on my ps3 i use pretty much all of the above to transfer movies, music, and save data to and from my ps3. HA HAHAHAHAAAAAAAA AAAA PWNED

by haxor - 2009-10-17 14:21
wow

wow that sucks for Xbox users

New xbox update.

changelog:

1.we are going to be *****s and not let you use your stuff

2.buy our stuff if you want to use your console

greedy MS

by rollypoly - 2009-10-17 14:31
actually

yeah, the only thing you can use to transfer saves has always been the memory card/hdd.

this doesn't stop any of the music or movies from playing from a portable device, just ensures you have to pay m$ outrageous fees for game storage.

"Where do you want to go today?" straight into the arms of the much less restrictive PS3...

by squeeky_clean - 2009-10-17 16:37
MS screws us again

Why the loyalty for this company? They don't care about any of us, execpt getting our hard earned money.

by Nineball - 2009-10-17 16:57
Pay $100 for our 120GB hard drive!

What a bunch of BS that is. You pay $10 for a 120GB hard drive for a PC and $100 can get you a 320GB hard drive for your PS3...with $29 dollars to spare.

I do like the 360, but it's BS from MS like this which makes people pirate crap in the first place.

by HungrymaN - 2009-10-17 17:29
wow Microsoft

how greedy can Micro$oft be?

by ADblakejelani - 2009-10-17 20:23
lol

My 360 was already collecting so yeah idc (didnt really care for it,never liked it anyway besides to much accessories to buy for it)

by nintendofreak - 2009-10-18 00:10
but how

how can they do that from my under standing the xbox 360 as a computer can only read the firmware of the drive and since when you make a drive compatible with the drive you flash the firmware to an official xbox 360 drive i mean the components are the same i don't see how its even possible to exclude it as a compatible drive if it cant tell the difference .please correct me if im wrong

seems to be the way people interpret it.... dont know why.

the hacked hdds contain only official licenced hw/sw.

now, 3rd party unlicenced hardware on the other hand was reverse engineered and not supported by m$..

i think what m$ is targetting here is crap like datel memory units and stuff like that.

if m$ was to target 120gb hacked drives, they'll have ALOT of pissed off people. just like the whole used xbox360 being banned thing, its hard to tell unless you actually buy it,

many people likely have in their posession a hacked 120gb hdd if theyve ever bought off ebay or second hand at game stores.

i also believe this is in preparation to the 250gb hdd launch. i bet m$ has a trick up their sleeve with that specific drive so we can be detected unlike the 12-gb counterpart.

by Bountyhunter53 - 2009-10-18 04:49
Hmm....

The flash of the hard drive chipboard probably has a serial number which is then compared to the database.

So if the serial said 20G96FSHS that means 20GB and if the system detects a 120GB drive inside of it. Its kinda obvious to a system.

I think its the chipboards that give it away. Probably gonna be a way to get round it.

...

And the $50 billion dollar monopoly has found yet another way to scam its customers so it can get some more money. I will dance on the idiots that control this companies graves when they die. Especially Ballman.

by Navani - 2009-10-18 06:29
Is this legal???

I'm no lawyer, and the most experience with the law I have is the two months of my business law class but.. how the heck is this legal? If Microsoft banned everyone from installing 3rd party parts to a PC and forced them to only use official parts, I guarantee this would be splashed all over the headlines

by FelisCatusLover - 2009-10-18 07:54
...

Hopefully someone smart files a lawsuit against them because its not legal, this is monopolistic activity, something Microsoft is well known for.

by Bountyhunter53 - 2009-10-18 11:08
LOL

There wasn't any loyalty. People only bought it cause it was a cheaper alternative to the PS3. As i said before a relationship built on money doesn't last.

by Bountyhunter53 - 2009-10-18 11:13
....

I feel for you Americans.

Microsoft is scared of the EU regulator who check if monopolies are trying to kill rival companies or force users into doing things.

E.g. Like forcing users to use Internet Explorer, they got fined a billion dollars for that.

We at least have some protection from these monsters.

by Bountyhunter53 - 2009-10-18 11:15
LOL!

You do know we are talking about Microsoft?

by DarkXCloud - 2009-10-18 22:23
Wow....

WTF greedy bastards!

by Aces In The Palm - 2009-10-18 23:12
@ bountyhunter53

yeah true

i'm just lucky i guess that all first party stuff on my x360 i guess.

that and i play ps3 and PC most of the time.

but if the hacked HDD's contain official HW and official SW, i cant see how they could remove support without removing support for the proper 120GB drives.

by MagilsugaM - 2009-10-19 20:38
That sucks

and i was going to buy a f**ken 360 to get some jrpg's. But with the stupid overpriced harddrive i will wait for ps3 versions to come out and play the ones that are already for pc.

That's just bulls*it.

by demologik - 2009-10-19 21:44
so..

I have a modified 20 GB HDD that i hacked my self. It is the wd120bevs hard drive, and i used hddhackr to flash my drive. Is there a confiramtion that this update will take away my ability to use my 120 hacked drive?

by fourmyfriends - 2009-10-21 00:15
of course its legal

apple has had this approach from the begining, the problem with microsoft, and why they got sued, is because they where installing in third party boxes, If they had released Microsoft branded pc's with only microsoft parts and microsoft software, they would not have gotten in trouble, no I'm not a windows fanboy, I just hate to see people talk sh1t about MS, when other companies have already long used the same tactics

(ps, macs have gotten better about third party, but there was a time you couldn't get anything that wasn't directly from apple)

by deathmetal - 2009-11-04 14:49
I disagree.

>>Lifes tough for a 360 fan or user.

Not if you don't hack your system to hell and back.
