Head's up to our Xbox community, Microsoft has released a new system update for the Xbox 360 which adds USB memory storage support for the console. According to Xbox Live's Major Nelson:

Sometime over the next few hours when you sign in to Xbox LIVE you’ll receive a prompt to accept this mandatory update. If you are signed into LIVE already, you may be signed out and asked to accept the update and you’ll be back online in a few moments.

Most USB memory will work, or you can purchase one of the official SanDisk 8 or 16 GB flash drives that are pre-configured and also come with a free month of LIVE.

Here are a couple of points posted by the Major regarding the USB memory support:

  • You can have 2 devices connected to the console at a time, enabling up to 32GB of simultaneous storage.
  • The system won’t just configure the device once it is connected to the console. You’ll need to head to the memory area in system settings, select your USB Device, and choose from Configure Now (Format and Configure the Full Device), or Customize (you can choose how much memory you want configured for Xbox360 from the free space on the device.)

i was being sarcastic. its how ms does things. they come out with something other consoles have had since the beginning and they make a big deal out of it...natal, facebook, memory sticks, hard drives, controllers without batteries...and the list goes on

At least you can copy your game files to the USB stick, bring it to another 360 and still earn achievements.

I hate PS3 for not being able to take my data to my girlfriend's and earn trophies.

So how's the update coming along guys? Has any of you purchased the SanDisk Xbox USB? It's criminally expensive don't you think?

I don't know. They sound expensive, but the Read/Write speed is what's important. My Kingston 16GB cost me $39.99 and it doesn't meet the xbox 360 performance standards.

Sounds to me like its not going to accept a standard FAT32 FS. That's a bit retarded...

What are you talking about?

It takes Fat32, that's all it takes.

It just makes a folder called "Xbox 360" on the fat32 partition.

It's stupid how it won't use that file system that's been outdated for years.

I hope you're trolling. It's MICROSOFT. If it wasn't a proprietary file system it would be NTFS, which THEY created and use on XP (Though XP supported FAT) through Win7. (granted they borrowed some ideas from HPFS)

One of the unmentioned features is the "Transfer Content" option.

You can now select multiple pieces of content via checkboxes to copy to another device. Much faster then going through and individually copying every item.

i'm really glad they've done this as i had a datel memory unit which they made obsolete. But, i just cant think why they'd make 3rd MU's unusable and then allow any flash drive to be used instead! (i'm using my forza 3 LE flash drive, it works a treat!).

The official Xbox 360 SanDisk flash drives are $40 and $70 for 8GB and 16GB! Why? Just because they say Xbox 360 on the side? That's more than double what you can get them for otherwise.

Do any of you think that this will be a win for pirates and modders? People could now take their saves, upload to the net to have other people download it and throw it on their jump drives. Saves could be modded on the computer and then put on the 360. I wonder if Microsoft thought of that?

There are already tools available to hook up your Hard Drive or Memory Unit to your PC, upload files to the net, and have other people download them.

You don't even need anything special if you open up the HDD enclosure. The hard drive, after all, is just a normal 2.5" SATA drive.

@ least they now say that the $40 & up drives will come with 1 month xblg subscription(pr obably it will be tied to the idea that the 48 hour tokens)

I don't know if this is allowed here, but this post can be deleted if it's not.

Burn $SystemUpdate to a CD/DVD (doesn't have to be a DL) or copy it to the root of a USB key. Reboot the system for the update to start.

Does not include Avatars. You'll have to google for that one.

Forgot to mention, don't install the update if you have a Jtag'd 360 (there's a different method for updating).

If you are banned, this will also uncripple your hard drive allowing game installs again.
