Here we have another rumor on the motion-sensing add-on for the Xbox 360. If you'll remember, this rumor came as early as December of 2007, and it's been appearing in and out of our consciousness ever since then. Well, we thought it was over for real when Microsoft flat-out denied the rumor in July last year. Guess what. It's alive again.

A tipster from Engadget purports that Microsoft is flexing its innovative muscles to beat the Wii in the field of motion-sensing, complete with their own sensor bar that will detect not only waggles of controllers but FULL BODY MOVEMENT and sound -- even without the controller.

Supposedly, there are two sensors on the bar, as well as a mic and a camera. While the tipster has "no idea" how the whole thing works, at least he got to sneak out with the features list - and a picture to boot:

Xbox 360 sensor bar? - Image 1

  • Full body and hand gesture control of games / characters.
  • In fighting games you kick, punch, duck, dive, jump and so forth with your body.
  • It also picks up small hand gestures like pinching, grabbing and scrolling.
  • There will also be video conferencing and games with video.
  • Trivia game over the internet with live images of each person playing. When a question pops up, they can clap to buzz in.
  • You can "move objects on your screen" and the other party can see what you're doing in real time.
  • Sensor detects only the person playing, not folks observing on the couch.
Hmmm.. thinking about it now, maybe Ken Lobb's little "slip" at a video interview for Banjo Kazooie did have something to it. Remember? He said, "So you basically grab with the wrench and then you twist the controller around and it'll move different things in the game."

Microsoft's been denying it for almost two years now, but maybe the time is ripe to unveil this motion-control technology for the Xbox 360? Or maybe wait another, oh I don't know, month? You know, in June? At the E3?

Maybe, maybe. Hold your horses. It's all intriguing, but it's also just a rumor at this point.

» and your point is

every gamepad is a copy of the original gamepad with controller and buttons in different places

grab a brain

the psp is a gameboy with better graphics, get the copyright police onto sony.

» you know

i thought this was ridiculous but then i saw the trailer for rayman raving rabbids on the 360 so it could very well be true.

» seen it

I saw the technology on G4tv's website the other day but who cares? I am a lazy American. I go 2 the gym once a week + my Wii Fit. I don't want 2 play games 4 a work out? my room isn't even that big ? I'm sure my neighbors downstairs don't want 2 hear me jumping every 5 seconds. Whats with Developers? This is an awesome concept & i'm sure it will make kick assss games but I don't play games 4 realism or a work out. I'm fine with just sitting down and button mashing.

» gameboy?

ill think you ll find that the gameboy has an a and b dont compare it to the psp since its based on a ps1 pad, but you are on the right lines which they took from the amiga etc etc, the issue here is it seems theyve taken parts from the wiimote and also from the pseye, those technologys aint the same as a controller where some things are base standard, and i remember the wii getting sued for having a similar style pad as another company even though they only had a patent and not a controller. but to be honest even with the being sued part like m$ would care even though they rip of everyone in the process

by ahnp - 2009-05-02 12:05
» indeed

this is just m$ copying everyone else, its nothing new at all (the copying everyone part) they see the wii and ps3 with motion control and feel they have to steal the good parts from both, like the sound and movement camera er sony already had that like over a year ago

» Actually...

If you want to get technical with who copied who, Both Sony and Nintendo kind of copied Microsoft. And this is in main reference to the motion control in the controllers. Microsoft actually had a PC controller with motion control called the SideWinder Freestyle Pro back in 1998. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft_SideWinder (scroll down to the section about the controller)

Let's just say good ideas are better shared with everyone!

» yeh i surpose

but pc based and console based are a bit different, and it was always designed for flight simulators, their was no pratical use for it otherwise, what i was surgesting is the fact that no console really needs it, it takes out the hardcore in the gaming and tones it down, like the wii, completely toned down because it was built purely for this, look at the ps3 what games really use it, it is completely unnessicary, but its come in because of the wii and people thinking woooo wow this gimmick is cool but thats all motion control is and ninty made alot from the people thinking it was all that, bit like the hd dvd drive you could buy for the 360, completely unnessicary but since the ps3 had hd they felt they had to follow the trend

» also

1 last thing, m$ werent the first to come up with motion control, it goes to the amstrad but they never perfected it but they came up with the theory, also their was a motion glove for the ps1 which was before the sidewinder, but they have a good idea but you can see where theyve adapted other companys versions, like the motion camera but then like it says its just a rumor so well see, to be honest it isnt something ill be getting for my box

Aces is referring to the fact that the PSP is a handheld video game device that functions multiple games and the first handheld video game device to do that was the Gameboy.

So Aces has a valid point.

and you ahnp, clearly missed it.

» yeh that to

alot of companys have done it even the jaguar had something before it flopped, its just a bit unneeded, u know y take time out of puttinng quality into the game and switch it for motion control

» What's the point?

Everyone who bought a 360 or PS3 did so because they actually wanted to PLAY games. If I want to move around as a form of exercise playing video games I'll play DDR so that I actually break a sweat and burn something. You get about as much exercise jerking off as you do in an hour of pretty much any Wii game, seriously, other than Wii boxing I've never broken a sweat playing a Wii game. My Wii was fun to use for a little while (is it possible to talk about this system without sounding awkward?) with Twilight Princess, Brawl and the occasional round of Wii Tennis. But I probably haven't used it in a good 4 months.

Besides the video conferencing this seems sort of useless. If someone is going to buy a system because of motion sensing they're just going to go with the Wii anyway.

Also the fighting game idea is stupid. Unless you're on an easy difficulty the opponent will be throwing out moves way faster than you can move your body. And what do you do if you want to do a special attack or something? How would you go about using your hadouken in Street Fighter IV?

» Lol

Here we go with the copy fad again. People are going to start pulling out old patent filings and other articles about who did what first when the bottom line is the peripheral in question will be unfun garbage. We'll probably be using this waggle control less than the PS3's SixaxiS (which for those out there who don't know is not a lot). Tacked on motion control just wont fly you'll have to force it down consumer throats in order to have remote success like the Wii. Accelerometers and other motion tracking tech is almost over rated. Ever since Nintendo released the DS, touch screens seemed to explode into mainstream lovin (also thanks to the crappy iPhone) and when the Wii came out the new "In" thing was accelerometers. I hope to god nobody releases the all voice game console.

Anyway, I hope this is fake, bad enough I turn off the motion control on my PS3 in every game that tries to tack it on, I don't need something else out there that I'll never buy use or think about, its just too much for one man to not givadamn about.
