UPDATE: We have received word from tipster Macca that Major Nelson confirms a new text input device for the Xbox 360 coming this summer. Expect an article from us about this development in a few minutes.

Engadget pic of (supposed) 360 controller keypad attachment - Image 1Something's up. AndrewMP (thanks for typing this out to us!) sent us this tip that Gamespot kinda leaked word of a coming Xbox 360 controller (or attachment for existing controllers) that integrates a mini-QWERTY keypad. And then Gamespot pulled the article.

Yeah, with that, we know now what Microsoft is gonna say about this: "No comment." Rinse and repeat as necessary.

Okay, ever since that little touch-typing slip surfaced, people have gone, well, touch-typing nuts. Here's the dirt teh intarwebs has managed to dig up:
  • MGC News referenced a 2005 Microsoft presentation in Spain, whose slides leaked and reeked of "QWERTY keyboard attachment";
  • Engadget has supposed pics of the keyboard attachment (pic shown for demo purposes), and posits a summer release date, no price estimated.
IF Engadget's pics are legit (and not a red herring thrown by God-knows-who), then we can speculate on the gaming utility of this keypad attachment. Absolutely perfect for on-the-spot text chats, because some things are best left unsaid (or censored by the FCC). Also perfect for placing an additional gazillion hotkeys for whatever games needs a gazillion hotkeys (Steel Battalion for the Xbox, anyone?).

No, this does not mean that you can play Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars against a PC player - still need that godforsaken mouse to keep up, we thought we established that already. No, that XFPS 360 mouse-port doesn't count either, deity-dang-it: what it does is translates mouse inputs into one of the analog stick inputs (most likely right stick), and it lags. Sorry; the next step in this case might have to be an actual mouse.

» Stupid.

The 360 doesn't have a web browser so I think a keyboard attachment for the controller would be stupid. If people had that much trouble typing with their controller anyways then they could just buy a USB keyboard which would probably be cheaper.

If the 360 did have a web browser then the keyboard attachment would be a good idea.

» You got it.

Hey Qj, That is indeed one of the two pictures that I had linked to in my original email to you. It wasn't until later in the day that I learned GameSpot had taken both the news story about the keyboard-attachment and a news story explaining the features of the Spring update down.

But you have it all correct.

» "trouble" typing with controller?

You make it sound like it's their fault. Come on, you cannot tell me it isn't a pain in the ass to have text conversations with friends using the controller, simply takes too long. If you send text messages a lot on the 360, like me, a USB keyboard for it is one of the best purchases you can make.

If this attachment is under $30 then I'll buy it without question, would make it a hell of a lot easier than having to drag out the keyboard with its short cord. Otherwise my Saitek is fine for me

» What?

"Also perfect for placing an additional gazillion hotkeys for whatever games needs a gazillion hotkeys (Steel Battalion for the Xbox, anyone?). "

Who said anything about that? I'm pretty sure if this thing is real it'll be just for typing, they will not let you put whatever you want on any key.

i predict Internet Explorer 7 for the 360

» IF!!!

if they make it to be played with games then they are really trying to make a ps3 with xbox writtin on it. it fine if they use it just for typing. but if they use it in gameplay too then thats just another page out of the sony book. i could be wrong.

» I agree

I hate how Messenger adds itself to your startup every time you use it, one of the biggest reasons why I no longer do. Then people bug you when it does auto sign-on when you don't have time to talk, then you say nothing and they get angry. Really pisses me off, there better be an option on the 360 to turn it off, or I'll be even more pissed

» Get the 360 cam

If you want to chat to your mates then why dont you just get the 360 webcam(also works on PC) and talk live, keyboards are old hat and only needed on the PS3.
