Xbox 360 Homebrew Emulation Via Xbox Emulator Exploit Opened

It's not exactly opening a Stargate to worlds unknown but it sounds pretty exciting! Undertakencodes found the Holy Grail of Xbox 360 Homebrewers - a hole in the security of the emulator of Xbox. He says this hole makes it possible to load homebrew and backups without hardware/firmware modifications. As proof of concept, Undertakencodes developed a port of the Snes9x which loads on the Xbox 360 but is not playable at the moment.

Snes9x is a portable, freeware Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) emulator. The emulator allows most games designed for the SNES and Super Famicom Nintendo game systems to run on PC or Workstation.

"I...hope that you believe me but homebrew already is possible in our Xbox 360s." Hey, they didn't believe Egyptologist Daniel Jackson when he said Stargate opens a can of universal worms. But you know what they say, once its open you can't hold back the door no more. Anyways, here is Undertakencodes video of the Xbox 360 loading the SNES Emulator:

This is super duper exciting, this should be something worth shouting from a mountain about, this is indeed a breakthrough and you should be making a bigger deal about it. From what i saw, the video looks entirly authentic, ruling out the possibility of it being fake, though not neccesarily. Playing backups without firmware or hardware modifications is a real breakthrough in itself. GREAT STUFF

» Screw the next Xbox emu update then.

Once homebrew is in the hands of the community they'll get the Xbox 1 games running on their own faster than M$, I guarantee. Plus imagine everything else that they'll emulate. We've been waiting FOREVER for their stupid version of SFII Hyper and homebrewers can have an arcade perfect one running in no time. Ha, ha! The 360 is gonna be like the Dreamcast! (fingers crossed that this is true!)

» Great to see

Heard about this happening a couple months back, though it was done with a usb cable of some sort and techy stuff, but this, just put in a cd and go! Its amazing someone found this! No need for Microsoft to fix this, it doesnt hurt the console and it brings old school to new school!

» unplayable?

story text says emulator is unplayable when video shows him playing mario?

by Jimi B - 2006-07-02 22:10
» Technically unplayable

It was really skipping and stuttering, sure he could play the game but because of the flickering etc. you wouldn't want to play for too long. Its great news tho!

» FAKE VIDEO ALERT

fake, some guy has obviously just built a PC inside a 360 case, and playing the rom from that.

jk

anyway, looking real good. yes this doesn't hurt microsoft but just watch the exploit get patched over by them. (hehe saying that xbox arcade offering retro gaming, could suffer a bit ok.. alot)

we all know nothings impossible, people will always find away of running homebrew no matter how many times microsoft try to stop them. take the PSP on its 8th firmware is it now? homebrew still working and probably always will be no matter how much they try fighting it. just a matter of time

by The Shiny Demon - 2006-07-02 22:32
» Fake

The disc he is using is obviiously a video DVD recorded specifically to look like some software booting and loaded the rom. What is controlling the software if not?

I wanna see him actually controlling the game to appease my skepticisms.

» is it fake??

i agrre with it being fake, it seems to load very quickly, in a normal 360 with a normal game even on a sammy drive the disc takes a while to spin and read.

I hope its real PLEASE, but im doubting it atm.

by shads - 2006-07-02 23:47
» agree with 9.

no matter how much i want this to be real it could be done easily on a video dvd

I am really hoping that this is true, but best bet is to hold your tounge until those high up in the scene (eg. xbox-scene.com). They previously confirmed that this was possible, but this new information just sounds too good.

by Timmy A - 2006-07-03 00:14
» Fake

I just posted above, then viewed the vid, but I am going to hedge my bets on fake. I believe that the xbox360 has been hacked to allow unsigned code through the emulation, but this is just punk kids seeking attention while jumping on the bandwagon. Please stop making this videos, kids.

» Real 100%

okay i know this is real .

it's done by changing the name in the XBE file to a game that is already supported on the xbox360 BC. The game will try to play regardless whats acctually in there. YES IT DOES NEED THE FIRMWARE HACK

» hrmmmm....

as far as we know it could be a DVD movie thats been encoded to look like it's running like an emulator, but i do think it looks convincing and i do hope it is real.

» it helped the xbox 1 sales

most pepole i know bought a xbox just to mod it it helped it sell more only reason i have one and bill gates no's it if they dont fight the modder only the bootlegers there xbox360 can kill the ps3....look at the psp all it offers is emulators or homebrew if it did not have that it would not be worth $h!t.......

And by 'backups' whe offcourse mean 'pirate copies'. Why not say what you mean itstead of pretending to be legal by using the term 'backups'?

» 360 hack

Like others have said, it could be done with a video DVD on the 360 easily.... I think it probably is legit, but it could easily be a fake.

by Kevin - 2006-07-03 03:57
» yes!!

it plays better than I thought it would, I can't wait!

looks real to me.

Although this is exceedingly interesting, there would be few people developing for it compared to the PSP. The PSP has practically been blown wide open by Sony's poor security, meaning anyone can develop and play it. With this hack, it means you first need to hack the firmware of the DVD drive, and not update the 360, which would mean not connecting to XBL again (even the regular dash updates could fix this, so not just an XBE update). It also means that currently, you need to code an app, then write to DVD, then run it via the hack....that would take forever unless a shell-like homebrew was created to load from hard drive or over a network.

Personally, I'd just like to see homebrew properly supported....but that won't happen as XBLA is too lucrative to allow free games.

Thats cool and all but might be a fake. If you look closely at the Xbox 360 led while the guy walks toward it to put the game in comes on out of no where before he opens the xbox 360 tray!!

he turned it on with a wireless controller. 'tard.

he could easaly use a video editing program to make that and burn it on a dvd, then when he puts it in the 360 it just plays the video...

» Fake

I say it's fake, and this is why. When have you EVER seen a real release like this require a 5 minute run around video to prove it's real?

If it were real they'd release it to us, or at least release the information in a more..proffesional manner than to do a stupid video like this.

They wouldn't NEED all these tricks and clocks and movies of the disc if it were real because they'd have nothing to proove.

I don't know of any "hack" that had a video like this that ended up being real.

by Slipstream - 2006-07-03 07:37
» to Corrie (#30)

um... the firmware hack had a video, and its real (last time I checked)

Thanks for the pointless, and useless rant. Next time think (I know it can be hard)

by sKept1cal - 2006-07-03 08:01
» Hmmm....

I agree that this is most likely a fake, although I'd LOVE it not to be. Why are these videos always soo shaky and dodgy looking ? Diversion tactics ? What's most likely - they made a dvd video recording of the 'demonstration', or that a simple software loophole will open up the 360 and hit Microsoft in the pocket ? Still, I guess that if the PSP can be hacked so many times ....

The film reminds me of the old big-foot and UFO films people used to make ... :0)

by Mr. Common Sense - 2006-07-03 08:03
» probably fake

There's no way to tell it's real unless he releases some beta or work in progress version in a week or two. If I hear nothing after that, it's a 99% chance it's fake. He also shows a lot of the disk in the video, which proves nothing. The laptop timer also proves nothing. He might have just made a DVD video with that laptop. Also, when the "game" is finished it doesn't really show what the sidebar that comes up says. Is it an error or just "are you sure you want to quit this game" message. And even then, the firmware could be hacked. DON'T BELIEVE CRAPPY VIDEOS! WE NEED CONCLUSIVE PROOF!!

i believe aswell that it may be a dvd video. keep in mind if u look closely hes using a single layer dvd the hack only reads dl disks, also when he flips the dvd u can see from the size that hes practically has 900 or so MB burned on it i burned snes9x alot with a few roms and i hardly get that much of a burn mark.
