Xbox 360 Homebrew Achieved? Surreal 64, Avalaunch and 500GB Drives

Developers, Developers, Developers. No doubt if you saw the classic video of Microsoft's very own Steve Balmer gasping for breath after applading 3rd party developers you wont be forgetting it anytime soon. Seems Microsoft wants to make it clear that they love developers who want to take their tools into their own hands and run with it.

While there has been quite a number of great developments recently in the gaming scene, not many deal with the Xbox 360. Custom case accessories are nice, and playing legal backups to preserve your original is a cool feature. However these are "normal" compatability functions of the Xbox 360 and leave little area for exploration. Leading me to my next question... Where is the homebrew? The ability to play backup games on the Xbox 360 is facilitated by using a DVD firmware hack. So in essence, you can still only play Microsoft Official games. Not quite a full breakthrough when compared to the original Xbox.

So while Microsoft is apparently having problems with backwards compatability, hackers are not.

With a modified Xbox you are able to load up homebrew games, emulators for classic consoles as well as custom dashbords (replacement operating system) which you can customize to your hearts desire. But wait! Whats that there in the background? Is it a new menu for XBL Arcade, or something more?

sureal 64 - Image 1 sureal 64 - Image 2

Upon closer inspection you will see what appears to be the first homebrew running on the Xbox 360 console. The applications running in the background are original xbox emulators and homebrew applications. So while Microsoft is apparently having problems with backwards compatability, hackers are not. From left to right we have; Surreal 64 (a Nintendo 64 Emulator which provides 3 different engine modes for emulation), Avalaunch (a multi function dashboard, IRC client, file manager, news reader, etc.), and the Xbox 360 Storage Devices Menu displaying what appears to be a 500 GB Hard Drive. Whats your take? These look real to us but then again the internet and crafty photoshop'ers do go hand and hand.

Very well could be xbmc but it comes from xbox-scene and on xbox-scene they said it came from an anonymous but credible source, so who knows.

by - 2006-06-27 19:51:07

the guy is running avalaunch u can see in the pic
by - 2006-06-27 20:23:15
Hmmm

I can't tell. Don't you have to be actually running the Xbox Media Center to get the 360 UI? In the third pic he's just at the Avalaunch menu, with the 360 Guide asking if he wants to shut down the console. It's either real or Photoshopped
by - 2006-06-27 20:24:25
Team Xecuter

http://www.team-xecuter.com/ They have also confirmed this so..it must not be fake.

fake

there is no option for turning off the controller in the sidebar, which is on xbox 360
by - 2006-06-27 21:19:23
Above me

To post 14-15. Its a jpg. Of course its going to loose quality. But yet people seem to ignore my previous comment about team-xecuter claiming it to be real. They are a real respected group, why would they lie. I think the main reason for all the nay-sayers to immedatly claim its fake is because of the many times we`ve been burned lately with 360, psp..etc. Although I do think because team-xecuter confirmed it that...it has to be true noÉ. The only thing that raised a flag for me was the on the shutdown blade beside the Shut Down text there is an icon there. I havn`t played my xbox for a bit so im not sure if it was there or not, but either then that I do believe this is real.
by - 2006-06-27 21:21:26
Above me again.

To number 16. Please plug in a non wireless controller and tell me if there is an option to turn off the wired controller. Didn`t think so. Thanks for comming out.

(10: It's either real or Photoshopped) O RLY?
by - 2006-06-27 22:51:23
Your say

Why is everyone calling it Fake or Photoshopped, u are surely retarded.
by - 2006-06-27 23:18:58
this is like....

when the psp "modchips" were about to be released. if someone did develop a modchip for 360, why would they release these photos? 3 VERY ambiguous photos that do nothing but raise skepticism about their product. more over, if someone were bragging that they had a mod no one else did, they would have a blog or something explaining how kick-ass they were, not just anonimously post 3 random pictures on the internet. these are either VERY well photoshopped, or some homebrew being run on xbox, where if you knew anything about writing code (which i dont) would probably be quite easy to create these images. my call, real homebrew on xbox1, not a modded 360
by - 2006-06-27 23:31:08
Fake

It's Photoshoped. Any idiot with a computer can make that :P
by - 2006-06-27 23:31:34
FAKE

If these are for real, how come there is no option to shut down controller and what is that ***** in the background?
by - 2006-06-28 00:22:45
It is real

What you people dont understand is that this is the new soon to be released (or is already released) Xbox360 skin for XBMC on Xbox. It is made to look just like the 360 interface and it looks really great. Theres even vodeos about it where they show how the skin works. Those of you that think this is for Xbox360, an emulator or just photoshopped are just stupid!
by - 2006-06-28 02:08:01
Truth

Okay - the facts: 1) This has been confirmed as true by those involved with xbox-scene, avalaunch and teamexecuter. These people will not post something like this if they have not seen it run personally. 2) The Devil360 chip (not devilmod360) was due to be released recently, it was said to be delayed due to a feature of "unsigned code" being included. This chip is being developed by some heavily involved in the modding scene. 3) This is being done using the backwards compatability emulator. These programs (avalaunch + surreal64) are much more simpler than games, therefore highly likely to execute correctly using this emulator. 4) The shutdown wireless controller section is not there due to only a wired controller being used. 5) Yes, these are easily faked pics. The easiest way to fake these would be to take a screenshot on xbox1, put this on a keydrive, view it on xbox360 and call the menu blade. Why would they even bother photoshopping. 6) It is not XBMC360 on xbox1, that is plain obvious by looking at it. 7) It does not need to be a 2.5" HDD, SATA is universal (although you would need to grab the power from an external source +5V/+12V) 8) Sit and wait tight... Xbox360 homebrew is on its way :)
by - 2006-06-28 02:21:19
not sure..

i'm still not sure.. would you be able to access the guide menu (not dashboard) on XBMC, or shut down the console during avalaunch? plus team-executer has the 360 on the news post, implying it is Xbox 360 news.. or maybe just jpg's of the xbox 1 screens in the 360 jpg viewer.. but then why would 2 legit sources be vouching for it?
by - 2006-06-28 04:03:21
60GB HD???

If you look at the manual for Gran Turismo 4 it has a screenshot in it that shows a 60GB Hard Drive! Where can I get one?

by Rustyboy - 2006-06-28 04:16:17
i have this

its a skin for the xbox media center for the original xbox, looks pretty awesome, but this one is even more elaborate than the one I have(mine is a beta) but other than a few minor thing, its the exact same thing. you could tell by the pictures, in one of them they are using the surreal 64 emulator (a N64 emulator for the xbox)
by Rustyboy - 2006-06-28 04:29:26
something i forgot

also to poster 25, in one of the pictures they show one of the menus, the one that says Xbox Media Center Games Applications Emulators FIle Manager etc. this is the same list(except for the last things) that i have on myregular xbox, so I still think this is the final version of the xbmc360 skin for the original xbox media center. but if its what you say, then hell yeah!
by - 2006-06-28 04:46:52
wow

this has already been confirmed by avalaunch, team xecutor (mod chip team) and by 2 mods over at xbox-scene.com. with confirmation from avalaunch and team xecutor, they even posted it on thier front pages: http://www.team-xecuter.com/ http://www.teamavalaunch.com/
by - 2006-06-28 04:47:19

by - 2006-06-28 07:27:02
for crying out loud

1 of the most respected modchip teams for the xbox (xecutor) claims these images are true. i guess when more info is released then people will shut up and realize that not all images on the net are faked.
by - 2006-06-28 08:14:30

by - 2006-06-28 08:54:03
Yeah

It's definately XBMC 360 for the original XBOX modded. I have that dashboard and looks just like a 360 dash.
by - 2006-06-28 09:39:33
you stupid *****s

its obviously not XBMC360, you can't bring up a XBMC360 blade over surreal64. now go die you *****ing scene kiddies.
by - 2006-06-28 10:57:28

by - 2006-06-28 15:19:47
60GB HD? revised!

The game I meant was actually Ridge Racer 6 not Gran Turismo. Where did they get a 60GB Hard Drive from? Anyone know?
by - 2006-06-29 02:20:04
This should make you satisfied

As u still wont believe me, and STILL lie about this being a x360hack look at theese links and shut your lying mouths! http://blackbolt.x-scene.com/ http://blackbolt.x-scene.com/?p=skins&cat=mc360
by - 2006-06-29 02:23:40
f

Thats cool if its real pictures!
by - 2006-06-29 05:01:03
go look at todays post about this...

it confirms team xecuter's claim that it's real, (considering it's been posted here multiple times) but since some of you numb nuts don't believe anything....
by - 2006-06-30 13:32:36
IT IS FAKE

It is fake load up your 360 and look at the diffrence and then think. Wow a diffrence plus to alot of noobs out there when u have a wired conroler it doesn't say turn off controler. http://blackbolt.x-scene.com/ http://blackbolt.x-scene.com/?p=skins&cat=mc360 those links show how this could just be on the regular xbox. Please forget the idea of a mod chip for the 360 it seem the only way a chip would ever come out would be for the cd drive. think smart don't be a retard.
