Xbox 360 - Image 1Microsoft, in the latest statement from its official Xbox site, has announced that its current-generation Xbox 360 console has hit the 10 million unit sales benchmark in the United States alone. This brings up total global sales to the 19 million threshold.

Microsoft said that the Xbox 360 has hit that milestone ahead of its rivals, Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii. It gave credit to its strong lineup of games available and its industry-leading Xbox Live service. The fact that the console launched a full year ahead of its competitors also helped it shore up the stats quicker.

Rockstar Games' record-breaking release of Grand Theft Auto 4 seems to have been more than a big seller of software units. It also served as a boon to Xbox Live by boosting membership to a total of 12 million after its release. Microsoft expresses confidence that this number will grow even larger as more strong exclusives come in.

With games like Gears of War 2, Ninja Gaiden 2, Fable 2, and more on the horizon, it's hard to remain skeptical of Microsoft's vows. We'll give you more updates as additional news becomes available.

How can xbox say "Xbox 360 has hit that milestone ahead of its rivals, Sony's PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's Wii". When the wii sold worldwide 24.45 million and the xbox only sold 19 million. The wii still out sold them.

Statistics, statistics :)

"It gave credit to its strong lineup of games available and its industry-leading Xbox Live service"

-> Credit should be given where credit is due. While the 360's games lineup did have many things to do with its "apparently" strong position, the primary reason is it's 1+ year headstart.

It's a given that when you have that much of a headstart, you are going to be pretty much ahead, given similar technology and price-tags.

As long as we are being silly and comparing totals, how about this:

1) 360 has 19 million in 2.5 years (link provided below), which comes to a total of around 7.6 million sold per year.

2) PS3 has 12.75 million sold in 1.5 years since launch (link provided below), which comes to a total of around 8.5 million sold per year.

By similar calculations, the PS3 will have sold much more when it crosses a similar timeline. Isn't that a testament to the PS3's selling power then?

I'M NOT TRYING TO PROVE ANYTHING HERE, I LIKE BOTH CONSOLES (It's a pity that such disclaimers have become necessary nowadays, do we really need to PROVE that we are not brand-loyal?)- just trying to show that Microsoft and Sony are just holding pissing contests when they make such statements :) and more fool the fanboys that get into arguments because of this.

» Thats True

But with the lead that the 360 has and the rate that the PS3 is outselling the 360, it would take many years for total PS3 sales to be above total 360 sales.

So if sales figures keep up, 360 will be the largest console for quite a while.

Agreed.

Of course, we are assuming that the current rate of selling stays the same. However, as you are probably aware, there are some Huge games in the pipeline for the PS3, including MGS4, Motorstorm 2, LBP, FF 13, FF13 Versus, White Knight Chronicles, Last Remnant, RFOM2, GT5, Heavy Rain, God Of War 3, etc and these are just the exclusives that I know of. This doesn't include multiplats and old games. More games might see some 360 fans shaking off their prejudice and get one as well. All in all, I would say there is a pretty good chance for the PS3.

To even the playing field, the 360 has some pretty good exclusives as well - Fable 2, GeOW2, and others (I'm not counting Too Human - from what I've seen so far, it doesn't look like much) and the other multiplats.

So... I guess Time will tell, and may NO Console win :) - that is the ONLY thing that ensures that we get the best things that both camps can provide.

Last Remnant is multi. Motorstorm isn't a console mover neither is Heavy Rain(no one still knows nothing). WKC the only RPGs on PS that sell millions is games made by Namco and SE also there isn't much hype for this game. RFOM won't get as much attention as GeoW 2. Though I do think LBP,MGS4,GT5,FF , and GoW 3 could be big console movers, but MS have big games planned as well. So, I expect jumps in ps3 sales, but I expect jumps from MS as well. Which will most likely even them out.

While the PS3 will catch up because it's more likely to outlast the 360, it still means there's more 360s sold here than any other system.

I don't think system sales matter to the consumer though. As the Wii has proven, even if a system sells well, it doesn't necessarily make the games better.
