Xbox 360 HD-DVD player nearly reached 100K mark

360 with HD-DVDThe Xbox 360 HD-DVD player which debuted last November 7 has nearly reached the 100K mark, this is according to the figures released by the NPD Group (figures that are now being analyzed by all sorts of people). Apparently, the unit sold 42,000 pieces last November and 50,000 pieces last December in North America. Unfortunately for some aficionados, MS UK does release individual sales figures for peripherals, so you have nothing to compare it with.

The US$ 199 add-on benefited a lot from the minor software update wherein the drive integrates quietly with the 360 dashboard by splitting the "eject" button into semi-circular HD-DVD and DVD drive buttons.

Hmm, with these increase in sales (even it is nothing major), would Bill Gates change his mind about flash storage winning over HD-DVD and Blu-ray? Well, only time and sales figures can tell, we guess.

Just means... out of all the 360 owners in NA, 100K are uber-full-retards and not just retards like all the others...

Well I did knew the IQ of people in America is going downhill, but never expected it to be that sad! Well guess "Idiocracy" comes sooner than expected!

You can%u2019t even put a grammatically correct sentence together, yet you have the audacity to call "them" retards!!! The HD DVD will sell well; until the broadband width available is larger it won%u2019t be possible to stream directly to your hard drive for many years to come. Blu Ray whilst very good is too expensive.

# Wow thats alot less then I expectedVietone 2007-01-15 04:55
I dont see why some websites are showing drastically different figures.

It was already said that the HD DVD add-on has sold more then all standalone player combined but if thats true then HD DVD is severely falling behind.

If the add-on has just neared the 100k mark, I cant imagine what kind of sales figures the standalone players have gotten.

Wow and if it were 1000,0000 you would still say the same stupid stuff, they are selling well,HD-DVD is far more known about, when people buy HD-TV they don't discuss Blu Ray as their player Most of the non buying console people don't even know what it is,you see they buy HD-TV they think HD-DVD simple but obvious really.

# I will get oneGuest 2007-01-16 01:11
I may get one of these now they are selling well,I like most people prefer a standalone player (hardly anyone used Ps2 or xbox1 as their main player) consoles are really for games and that is why most people (Non console owners)who are interested in HD-TV and players will not care one bit about Blu Ray or the 360 HD_dvd player, once the price of the Panasonic HD-DVD standalone player drops in price I will get one of those.

# These numbers are rubbishGuest 2007-01-16 04:59
These numbers are rubbish. The PS3 has sold a million in America now (check the latests figures officially released) this means that Blu-Ray is currently winning at a ratio of about 8:1 (I am counting the amount of HD-DVD players sold as well). Bill Gates is bring up Flash memory as he knows HD-DVD is losing drastically. Just recently HD-DVD has been cracked, thus making a lot of major studios jump back to Blu-Ray as it has two layers of secruity. Sure HD-DVD has the Porn industry as the moment, but for how long? And will the porn industry bring the money in? Worldwide HD-DVD is currently losing, and Blu-Ray is winning at a ratio of 20:1, when the PS3 is released in the UK in march these figures will possibly go up to 24:1 and rising.

it would probably sell a hell of a lot more if you could actually find them in the shops. They are as rare as rocking horse poo.

From an industry standpoint, the articles numbers are correct. It doesnt matter how many PS3s are sold, becasue the movie industy cannot decern how many PS3 are actually being used for movies. Now before the PS3 was released, HD-DVD was winning hands down by about 6to1. And FYI, both formats are using AACS copy protection, hence both have been broken. Sorry to break it to you, but even with 1 million PS3s out there, and higher industy support for blueray. HD-DVD is still outselling, by about 6to1. Mostly becasue HD-DVD looks better than Mpeg2 encodes. But blueray is catching on, some of there new encodes look as good as hd-dvd. But stop making up numbers, makes you look foolish. HD-DVD is still outselling Blueray by about 3to1 and with a under $300 player comming out for summer. Expect even higher sales of HD-DVD.

HD-DVD sucks *****, it was winning but now Blu-Ray has overtaken because people see the potential quality of a possible 200GB disc in the future. PS2 powned XBOX and PS3 will do the same with the 360
