Xbox 360 hd-dvd drive - Image 1According to a forum post at retail site Fatwallet.com, a few Sam's Club warehouses in the US are selling dirt-cheap Microsoft Xbox 360 HD-DVD drives to interested parties at the low price of US$ 72.54, far below Microsoft's suggested retail price.

The external drive that allows the playback of high-definition discs is officially listed at US$199, though Sam's Club's legitimate channel samsclub.com offers a discount that reduces the retail price to US$ 181.42.

The HD-DVD drive was created in conjunction with the impending US release of the Microsoft Xbox 360 Elite package which has HDMI and a 120GB hard drive bundled in.

HD-DVD is one of the two competing formats for the next generation of storage media. It was created by Japanese electronics giant Toshiba and is supported by the Microsoft Corporation along with Hewlett-Packard and Korean firm LG.

Its rival format Blu-ray, created by Sony, is the more high-end of the two, sporting a much bigger storage capacity. Blu-ray currently holds a 70-30 market share advantage over HD-DVD due in large part to the fact that all Sony PlayStation 3 game consoles sold are equipped with a Blu-ray drive. HD-DVD is supposedly the more preferred format, leading the competition in stand-alone player sales. However, users get Blu-ray automatically when they get a PS3, making it hard for Toshiba to cope up.

» no dice

Wrong... I called all 4 sams clubs in the san diego area, and they said no dice, I also called up a couple of friends in the bay area to check there and the manager called BS. I checked the website and what'ya know. NOTHING.

It is for like 181. 20 bucks off is hardly a deal.

1 paragraph of news and 3 paragraphs of pedantic rambling is hardly news. It looks like you're trying to start a "holier than thou" format war in here..

» Agree with you, Look at their so called news last paragraph PATHETIC

I agree with you HA, about the "Holier than thou" especially their last paragraph.

Blu-ray currently holds a 70-30 market share advantage over HD-DVD !

HOW DO YOU KNOW THAT FOR SURE QJ ? and yet you then say -

HD-DVD is supposedly the more preferred format, leading the competition in stand-alone player sales.

SO WHY DO YOU SAY SUPPOSEDLY and yet you are so sure that the 70-30 market Blu Ray share is fact ?..

Im not even going to bother with this site anymore

» HD DVD Capacity 1 gig more that Blu Ray

HD DVD are coming out with triple layered discs at 17 gigs a layer. Which means their capacity will be 51gigs more than the blu ray.

» What about reports for standalones then ?

What about reports on the sale of standalone players then ? arnt they also legit ?...

» Wow, the Op needs to do his research

1. Bluray isnt technologicaly better, yes it has higher storage capacity, but its not even standardized yet. Oct 31 is the day that Bluray is fanially finished, its still in beta. Also the majority of Bluray encodes are Mpeg4, and when compared to there HD-DVD VC-1 encode, Bluray looks more like brodcast HD, than and HD Disk.

2. 70-30 market share is for curent sales, its not toal sales. Bluray is at about 1.2 million disk sold, HD-DVD is at .9 million sold.

3. Walmart just agreed to purchase and market HD-DVD form a chinese manufactuer. Walmart is what made DVD, and it will make HD-DVD.

4. Blurays trogen horse (The PS3) did work, it ramped up sales, but now those sales are leveling.

5. Samsung, Bluray backer from the begining has jumped ship, and are now making duel players.

6. Warner has delayed many Blurays such as the Matrix trillogy that launches on HD-DVD in may becasue BDJ is not working and BD+ is not finished.

7. Fox, an exclusive Bluray studio has basically canceled or delayed indefinitly most of there blueray titles for this year.

8. Stand alone players for HD-DVD are still out selling Standalone Bluray players, cant remeber the exact figures but its about a 5to1 ratio.

9. HD-DVD can be manufactured on the same lines as DVD, and are reported to cost about 40% less than bluray disks.

10. Bluray forums additude has fueled much hatred for there pushed format.

This week in HD-DVD news has been amazing, HD-DVD will be the dominant format by the end or mid 2008.

» Thats Why

2 Yrs ago TDK announced a 4 Layer 100GB disc and it has gone higher than that now.

» are you serious?

you shouldnt bother with this site, if you cant understand basic english. heres the deal, HD-DVD leads the way in stand-alone player sales, i.e., players that do nothing but play the movies. however, with the inclusion of all players, i.e., the PS3, blu-ray ends up leading the overall market. but youre right, you should probably stop coming to this site and spreading your ignorance

» ahhhah

INSTEAD OF CALLING AROUND..... wasting your time like a total loser, you should have been at work making money. Then you could afford THE FULL PRICE.

» Your...

MOTHER HAS MY SUPPORT

by ha - 2007-04-26 16:43
» I told you so QJ....

I prefer HD-DVD to blu-ray

Blu ray has some pretty jacked up lag. And I heard this but wouldn't know for a fact, but wasn't the majority of the capacity of blu-ray for uncompressed audio only?

While sounding good, isnt that like making a 4MB mp3 song into like a 533MB wav file? Seems like blu-ray is more for elitist snobs who just look at figures and immediate capacity, not longevity.

Just an opinion and a query, so don't rip me a new dung chute.

You pole smoking nancy, I can all but guarantee that I make more in a 6 month period than you've made your entire life. Mortuary scientists get paid way more than clerks at best buy. I own a stand alone hd player, and the attachment for my 360. $76 seemed to good to be true (and it was apparently) so I wanted to verify. Go back to eating cheetos, playing WoW and living in the complacent filth of your mothers basement. God damn flaming finocchio.
