Xbox 360 getting USB flash drive support this April

Microsoft has finally set a date for when Xbox 360 owners will be able to use USB flash drives for storing profiles, game saves, and demos. The feature will be enabled on April 6th via a new system update.

 

The feature will let you use up to 16 GB of space on a USB flash drive for storage. You can connect up to two devices at the same time, which gives you a maximum total of 32GB to play with. Major Nelson notes that USB hard drives "may work", but you'll still only be able to use up to 16GB of space.

 

You can use any flash drive brand, but those who want to go Microsoft all the way can wait for a Sandisk Xbox 360 branded USB flash drive that comes pre-configured out of the box. This should arrive sometime in May.

They introduce 16 Gb now but later down the line I bet they will unlock bigger capacities.

I'm guessing that 16 Gb is the max that their Memory Units can go to software and hardware wise.

you know, this kind of kicks the ass out of everyone who said that Xbox suing Datel over their memory units was just money-grubbing. This is epic. Now I can just dedicate a drive to Rock Band songs and carry them around.

No, they just cap it because they don't want external drives to replace their own hdd. It's pretty pointless since usb2 is a bottleneck, it will be slower to load games from external drive than the sata hdd.

I'm guessing this is MS's way of saying, we're going to be releasing a new, slimmer Xbox360 without the memory card slots, but here, you can just use USB instead.

Major Nelson just showed he's using a bootleg HDD. The legit Microsoft HDDs have the name "Microsoft" in special font below the words "Hard Drive".

This is just so people who only buy the arcade console and have no plans to buy a Hdd and don't think they'll use XBL can just use a cheap flash drive might be more tempted to buy from XBL, it might look like M$ being less greedy but really they just making sure everyone can buy DLC and make more money, but still an excellent new feature anyway.
