Xbox 360 fans not fazed by high console failure rates, says NYT

Halo 360 - Image 1By now we've all heard about the Xbox 360 red ring of death saga, and how Microsoft is working - and spending - hard to correct the fatal design flaw that caused many a gamer's Xbox 360 consoles to go kaput. But what we haven't heard much about is how Xbox 360 enthusiasts are coping with this "crisis".

Contrary to what many people may think, it seems that Xbox 360 fans are doing just fine. The New York Times has reported that despite changing out their defective consoles for as many as three or four times, Xbox 360 owners are not fazed and are maintaining a positive outlook toward Microsoft's highly-popular console, home to gamer favorites such as the upcoming video game Halo 3.

One such fan, Stephano Nevarez, is still happily holding on to his Xbox 360 despite having changed out his console for the third time already, NYT reports. "ThereÂ’s nothing in the house that breaks down as much," he said. But he says that the problems he experienced doesn't mar his anticipation for Halo 3, exclusive to the Xbox 360.

Aside from Halo 3, Microsoft's extended three-year warranty also helped boost current customer morale. While some market analysts, such as Richard Doherty of Envisioneering Group, think that the current ring of death crisis is doing considerable damage to Microsoft's reputation, other financial analysts think that the way Microsoft is handling the problem will salvage the Xbox 360 from further damaged reputation and loss of revenue. Evan Wilson, equity analyst of Pacific Crest Securities, thought that the fix-it-free policy will put off owners of the launch Xbox 360 consoles, but was proven wrong.

Michael White, a high school teacher in Montreal, had expected that the expensive Xbox 360 would do better, what with its not-so-light price tag. However, he's not so worked up. "I'm a happy customer," he said, quite happy that Microsoft was able to fix his console for three weeks.

Perhaps Benjamin Lin, an 18-year-old Seattle Halo 3 fan, would sum up this article nicely with his words: "IÂ’m on my third 360, and itÂ’s working great for me."

# good old sony...Guest 2007-08-13 00:56
i remember my psx disc drive crapped out a year after i got it.

there was no warranty extension for the notoriously bad disk drives, so i feel microsoft is taking much better care of it's customers than sony did.

an early adopter feeling shafted is never a good thing...

Halo is a very good game, just because you don't like the console there's no need to mock a game developer. But I agree xbox is *****.

microsoft was having such a hard time with these broken 360s that they ran out of boxes to ship to the consumers

And it worked fine when I sold it on eBay. The last thing I want to think about is if it will fail in a couple weeks. Perhaps propoganda got the better of me, but I decided to get out while I still could.

anyone else think its weird when people say things like "had it since launch day and it still works great!" We shouldn't be happy or surprised that an electronic device hasn't broken down yet. We should expect that kind of quality.

Oh man, my BMW is still running great... had it for over 2 years. My TV is 8 months in and no probs... my computer is stretching the 2 year mark YEAAAAAHHHHH.

because people on this site think the 360 only lasts a week or something. My 360's B-day is this week, so some of us are having no problems at all.

If I recall, you've modified yours...am I correct? I might be wrong but I thought you said at some point you added cooling and a case mod...in which case you would've fixed the issues that were inherent to the system.

I'm all for it working, but you shouldn't have to go through all that to keep it working. Kudos to you, I hope mine last without mods.

if your laser burnt out that quickly you must of had a mod chip in it. i had one for 4 years no probs. as for the ps2 if you actually knew anything theirs a little screw at the back of the drive(same size as the psp screws) and you turn it a quater of the way and it turns the laser power up. but then 360 or ps3, microsoft cant claim theirs is that cheap caus its not, 300quid for the premium then an extra 150 quid for the hd dvd drive, so microsoft saying sony are rip of merchants look at yourselfs, 33% rod ratio yeh right go microsoft

Sony didn't have to waste their money and extend warranties because the market was booming for them. I'm sure most of you know that the reason why Sony sold so many consoles was because customers had to buy new consoles since they were to idiotic to buy replacement lenses. Sony is a genius, knowing their games were good enough to warrant returning customers. M$ is playing their cards right: if they don't take action soon, they might lose out due to Sony's recent moves AND the risk of getting sued. Again.

of course xbox 360 is too awesome to let something like a chance hardware failure stop people

2 original Xbox's 1st failed and ate disks 2nd works but the tray doesn't open hardly ever

1 PS2 disc read error

2 PS1 1 messed up in a power surge (Surge Protector did nothing) Other works great

NES works fine

PSP works fine (Sports Gamer)

Sega Nomad works fine

It seems the older the better

I am going to get a next gen soon but it is between PS3 And 360

the older consoles worked the best because they had less parts. the more parts a console has the more that can go wrong with them.

i still remember back in the NES days when all you had to do to fix a console that wasnt working right was just blow in the cartridge.

for reals with the 64 when i was younger me and my friend could just blow in the cartridge and the game would be fine.

Sony never had such a high failure rate like MS. If MS didn't take care of all those customers the way the have, they'd be in the *****s right now.

Every product has failure rates. But 33%, thats ridiculous, how do you even send a product out like that without even encountering any problems during testing.

I see sarcasm just went right over your head bc. I was just *pretending* I went through x amount of consoles, much like how ps3 r-tards like to say they went through 3-4 360s. Its called lying...

I wouldnt WANT 12 ps3s, I barely want the one I have right now. In fact, if my ps3 broke tomorrow I wouldnt care. All it does is collect dust anyways.
