Xbox 360 Elite's wireless controller - Image 1The Microsoft Corporation has issued a statement that the newly unveiled Xbox 360 Elite model was not introduced to replace existing Core and Premium versions of the game console. The focus, they say, is still broad enough for everyone to enjoy.

Elite features a new HDMI port, a huge 120GB hard drive and some minor accessories and customizations which should boost the performance of the game machine. A degree of anxiety in the game community was quickly checked by Xbox Live programming director Larry Hryb when he said "the 20GB is still a sweet spot, we're still going to make sure that's what we're optimised for."

Owners of the Core and Premium packages can also upgrade to the 120GB hard drive without having to buy the US$ 479 Elite model. All they have to do is buy the silver US$ 179 120GB hard drive and they're all set.

The Xbox 360 Elite comes in a black body and is currently taking Japan by storm. It will be in North American stores come April 29, 2007.

LMAO! Xbox 360 is crashing in Japan not 'taking it by storm'. The Elite to my knowledge is not even out or we would have had more pictures of it by now.

As usual the first poster is a PS3 user, why would it worry you about any news on the 360 ? what difference does it make to you?, what do you think you prove to anyone by writing complete rubbish above.

Oh and the PS3 is also CRASHING in Japan BUT the 360 in the USA is outselling the PS3 in Japan and USA combined....

180 bucks for 120GB?

MS is out of their mind.

So people have to take their $400 premium, and since almost everyone I know fills up their 20GB soo quick they have external drives, if you want more space on the Xbox360, you gave to drive the cost of your Xbox360 to $580 bucks.

I knew it would be in the 150-200 range but that was months ago when 120Gb drives were around 120-150 bucks alone for laptop drives. But now you can find them for $80 bucks on newegg. Factor in the price reduction that MS gets for bulk buying and they are buying them for less then $80 each.

With the MS markup, it should be at most $150 but they should have priced it at $130 bucks. But if they are going to keep the 20GB model at 100 bucks then thats the reason why they are pricing the 120Gb at 180 bucks. Because no person in their right mind would buy a $100 20Gb drive when you can get 120Gb for $130 Bucks.

@yuiyu

Actually I'm a Xbox 360 owner.

The PS3 has only just come out in the UK and I dont have the cash for it even if I wanted it. Just wanted to highlight that the article is wrong. I never said the PS3 was winning, I never said the Xbox 360 was rubbish. All I said is it was not 'storming' Japan and its not doing that well in that market. Plus the way the article was worded it sounded like the 'Elite' was out in Japan and it is not.

Don't jump to conclusions.

Is this thing gonna have the 65nm chip? I'm happy it's only gonna cost me around 200 bucks to upgrade to the elite. I've already purchased a cord to hook up to my monitor 15 bucks. and now the 120gb hard drive. What a deal!!! God forbid Bill Gates has to start lighting his cigars with fifties instead of hundreds. But I do Love the system, and I have been a fan of xbox for years, but this is just a slap in the face because I would have easily paid 479 to purchase this UPGRADE a month ago when I got my prem box.

Selling my Xbox360 premium and buying the elite would end up costing me even more then just buying the 120Gb drive.

You make no arguments but call me a fanboy, im pointing out facts that MS is screwing existing Xbox360 owners because they dont want to chance the retail cost of the 20GB drive.

Everyone expected the 120GB drive to cost not much more then the 20GB model and that the 20Gb would drop in price. They were all wrong, MS decided not to drop the price but to jack up the price of the 120GB model instead.

screwing?

what the ***** are you talking about?

because you want them the drive to cost 50 bucks less?

sony is the one screwing people.

Sony doesn't give us a choice if we want a Hi-def player or not...they just throw it down our throats.

you dont NEED a Harddrive

you don't NEED to download a ton of movies of marketplace.

but if you WANT it...then pay the price vietone.

Either buy the damn hd...or go download game videos off the Playstation Store.

With all these add-ons for the 360, I'd end up having to buy an extention on my house just to fit the d*mn thing in! All this so that the 360 can be more like a PS3. Tsk tsk M$.

# What?Guest 2007-03-28 10:46
First off, add ons? its the same system, just in black and with adifferent hard drive. PS3 can switch hard drives to. The only add on that really takes up space is the HD DVD drive, stop over exaggerating.

Second, sell your drive for $40-$50 and then you are spenidng $110-$130 (maybe if you sell it for $60), which is like tne to thirty dollars more than the original price.

The 360 is not crashing in Japan its static nothing has changed even after the Wii launch But the PS3 is crashing in Japan becuase the Wii is smashing it, and the PS3 is in very LAST place of the Three consoles in the biggest most important market the USA.

# PS3 20 gig ??Guest 2007-03-29 00:43
Er hang on what about the PS3 20 gig owners arnt they also screwed to ? what about a discount or rebate for cashing in their 20gig drive to as the minium is now a 60 gig drive and proberly will now have to rise to at least a 120gig so are those 60 gig PS3 owners going to get discounts etc? I doubt it.

The only reason you retarded Sony Fanboys are here, is cus your scared. You prolly wake up in the morning and get a coffee every morning, and sit by your computer and look at all xbox 360 related websites, then you post on them to try to scare them. Tell me if im wrong but, you dont HAVE to get the elite system. All you sony fanboys are dumbasses. Something new comes out for the 360 and you think were all going to go buy it. Im most certainly not, ill prolly buy the hardrive, but thats MY choice as an individual, not a mindless drone of microsoft, or more recently, an xbot. Go suck Sonys nips.

# WIFI is unreliable, cat6 superflat cable is the way forwardGuest 2007-03-29 01:01
I agree with NOYS, why on earth would you use unreliable WIFI for online gaming?, though you dont have achievements etc on the PS3 its important to 360 users to keep a good connection in matches etc.

A CAT 6 super flat 50ft cable that can be hidden anywhere can be bought from Ebuyer UK for around £3, why on earth would you use unreliable wireless for online gaming anymore?

# ComparisonGuest 2007-03-29 01:18
Bottom line is yeah, the Elite kind of sucks for early Premium owners. Not so much because the Elite is better, but because they didn't have the initial "choice" to buy it at launch. For new owners however, the Elite 360 is a pretty decent deal. Yeah, dollar per dollar the PS3 might still come out as a better "deal" right now if you were to buy all of the 360 accessories to match the PS3. (WiFi, HD-DVD, MS Gold on 360 vs Updated HD, HDMI cable on PS3) But first off, not everyone needs needs HDMI. Not everyone needs 120GB of storage, HD-DVD, even wifi (hell, most hardcore gamers prefer wired LAN for a slightly improved overall performance.) Here's the problem on the Sony side though. They're completetly relying on Blu-Ray to succeed and dominate the market. What if (Hypothetically speaking) Blu-Ray were to lose the format war? How does the comparison match up then? Hell, What if HD-DVD lost the format war? MS still wins because no one was obligated to buy the HD-DVD drive and by then users will have the choice to buy an external Blu-Ray drive. (keyword: "choice") Or they can simply use MS Video Marketplace to watch HD shows and rent 5.1 HD movies without ever needing to buy any HD player at all. The games are a whole new ball game as well. PS3 really needs to bring out some great titles if they want to keep up with 360. I know they're one year behind, but they'll need to catch up eventually because last time I checked it's still a gaming console. Sony should not lose focus on that over Blu-Ray. I'm not picking sides here, but these are simply the facts that both sides need to consider before making stupid fanboy remarks about who's better.
