xbox 360 Elite - Image 1Gadget site Gizmodo got its hands on an Xbox 360 Elite and performed a simple experiment to answer the question on everyone's mind: Is Xbox 360 Elite worth the US$479 that you'll shell out? The answer is a yes and a no, depending on what you plan to use the console for.

The article that the site ran dispelled rumors that the Xbox 360 Elite runs cooler and is more quiet than the previous models. However, it did point out that the HDMI feature included in the system is the best feature that it has. The console may not be worth the buy if you already own an Xbox 360, but for video fanatics who want to see their digital media in HD splendor, the machine delivers the goods.

The HDMI feature was tested on video playback, photos and games. Each time, it was compared to the standard definition quality output of the non-HDMI carrier models. Each time, it was noted that shadow details were more defined in high-definition mode. Some jagged edges were refined and images looked a little more crisp.

Gizmodo, however, pointed out that the quality of the TV involved will play a big factor in how the visuals ultimately show up. Some details may also be missed to what the article calls "untrained eyes." That means, people, if you're not too keen on the details, you may not be able to spot the difference.

Overall, it was recommended in the write-up that for most users, the Elite may not really be the best thing to spend your money on. But if you're totally crazy about digital media and you want a huge hard drive to store them all in, go right ahead and let the fun begin. » You guys are such idiots

Willing to pay $479 for a bigger HD and HDMI? How fu cking DUMB can you be??? Oh, it improves nothing. You just have to overpay for a new HD and an HDMI cable, which they always said you wouldn't need...

Oh well, go waste your money. Obviously microsoft markets these products to consumers too stupid to know any better... That's why sony priced the PS3 so high, means the idiots can't afford to buy one on their minimum wage!!! lol... Fu CKers.

» hey "mr common sense i shaft young boys" person

at least with the Xbox 360 your getting the choice on whether you want the things that rack up the price and not be force-fed it like with the PS3. And like the article says, the differences are minute, and at the moment, your only paying for the black console and the HDD, the HDMI is insignificant.

if people want to get this version, let them. It still ends up being cheaper than a PS3.

Extra $80 for 100GB extra, HDMI and HDMI cable. How is that a rip off?

Sony said rumble was last gen, but they are working on bringing it back. I'm sure you'll be replacing all your controllers once the new ones come out.

Games don't need HDMI to look good. But games that use rumble need rumble controllers.

» to "Xbox is the best"

tell me when your going to use the 120 gig without internet on your 360 ,like the ps3, unless your going to drag your 360 to the computer every time you want to watch/download movies, music, and videos you cant find, i suggest you download all the SHlTY things on xbox or go ps3 (try finding AMV Hell 3 to download so u get a laugh or 2...wait you cant lol hf) just trade ur 360 for a pc or a ps3, much better

» Bad comparison

"The HDMI feature was tested on video playback, photos and games. Each time, it was compared to the standard definition quality output of the non-HDMI carrier models."

What a stupid test!

Why didn't they test the HD output over the existing cables and the new HDMI cable?

» First poster usual idiot

Why is it that the first poster on the 360 news is always some idiot who owns a PS3 and dosent care about the 360 anyway, what a *****...

by nm - 2007-04-28 22:25
» Damn, sold out already

Was going to order from Amazon today but already sold out !, looks like this is going to be a big seller, can only be more bad news for the PS3, an indication is when PS3 owners start negative panic posting on news like here..

» its a con......

this is what the 360 should have been from the start..... it should have had a HDMI socket to begin with. I dont understand why you lot seem to defend microsftand think its great that there is more choice if want that then get a PC. The least they could do is reward all the early adopters of there consoles is give some sort of rebate.......

» pritty sad

seeing that ur a xbot i would at least think you "keep up to date" on the xbox 360 elite.

but i guess i was wrong (and so are you) i suggest you read up on the LIMITED EDITION (hint hint) elite.

if you still dont get it (which i am sure you dont) it means they only made a few (compared to the normal 360) so its normal so sell out quickly

» this guy is broke

this guy doesnt have a hd tv.....and he is probably broke. i got my elite...and im lovin it.

» HDMI

Why did Microsoft decide to add HDMI...they just want to keep up with Sony...hey even though ps3 is 600 is still came with hdmi...120 gigs for elite yeah its called UPGRADING hdd in the ps3 (very easy)

by mArK - 2007-04-29 08:01
» HDMI

I have modded my 360 with a black case and have modded controller with black cases..seriously if you dont have a hdtv there no point. If you really want a black case buy a black case\! its not hard to fit it. Also i have a PC with a 7900GS and a PS3. Overall i enjoy my pc mostly but my 360m a bit. Tbh i dont think ps3 stands to its price tag atm.

» @Devise

sony is working on bringing back bcuhs people really wanted it back. its not like they said "yeah its last gen so we're not including it" and then said "well, lets put it back bcuhs we want to".

» this looks and sonds pretty good

i'm been researching the elite n i really like what's in store. the 120 gig harddrive will really help, since i play a lot of games. also, the HDMI will be nice, i don't care if it is the newer or older one, at least it's HDMI. my 360 got the ring og death, so that's why i want to buy the elite. i think it's a very good deal, and i'll see how this goes out. so, like a week or 2 from now, i'm going to claim my Xbox 360 Elite.

by nah - 2007-04-29 09:18
» nah

ill keep my modded xbox360 premium. i cant believe theyre charging 180 for a 120gig HDD whatta ripoff. microsoft wants to keep up with sony, devolopers wont devolop for this new HDMI, as they have to develop for the lowest common denominator, which is the xbox360 core

» actually

320 gb fir 80 bukks is good. 120 may 40

hdmi cables are 75 bukks (15 on ebay)

hdmi is 20 extra production costs.

this seems to be close to 480 but only get if you have a 40 inch or better hd tv

by qw - 2007-04-29 14:11
» I hope nobody hates on me for this

But I honestly want it for the black color the most. Lol

Sure the larger HDD is nice and I could stop worrying about downloading huge files, but it justs looks soooo much better black.

Pretty much if you already have a 360 and do the GameStop trade-in thing and don't have HDMI or a 1080p TV, you're paying $180 of the $230 for the HDD and $50 for the black color. Not bad considering a black case costs at least $30 and you have to go through the hassle of installing it yourself (and voiding the warranty so if it breaks the next day you're screwed)
