Xbox 360 Elite a mistake?

Despite its decent welcome sales wise, the Xbox 360 Elite is getting it's fair share of criticism at the moment. Here's the latest from Next Generation and DFC Intelligence, which happens to be their most pertinent criticism: "With the word 'elite' Microsoft is implying that its existing users and all potential future Xbox 360 buyers that if they only spend $400 they are not elite. "

Next Generation goes on to say that the Xbox 360 Elite's target audience is "very niche, possibly imaginary." Next Generation says that the said audience are comprised of consumers that want to get a bleeding edge high-definition system, but oddly, wants to cut corners when it comes to video by using a "comparatively low-tech game hardware system."

It notes that the Elite doesn't even include an HD-DVD player or even built-in internet Wi-Fi. It's saying that this makes the Sony PlayStation 3 more cost effective in terms of video playback. It says that the Elite migrates the Xbox 360 towards a high-definition recorder/player.

Expounding on its Sony comparison, Next Generation notes that Microsoft basically slammed the door shut on the original Xbox and is now doing the same with its audience who purchased the Xbox 360. They say that Microsoft is saying that in order to get a true high-definition one must get the Xbox 360 Elite. This is in contrast to Sony, who continues to try to satisfy the PS2 consumer by continuing to release good content for the console despite the presence of the PS3.

For a product that's marketed as an elite toy for A/V connoisseurs, it seems a bit sad that an HD-DVD player is not bundled. However, Microsoft has made it known multiple times before that content might move from the physical storage (HD-DVD's and Blu-ray) to download distribution. Admit it: Microsoft is way ahead of other gaming companies when it comes to distributing movies, shows, and other media in their online service for their console.

It's not really "Elite", it's just another SKU. Naming it 'Elite' was a pretty lame idea.

The matt black looks damn sexy, HDMI is a plus, personally i don't need the extra storage considering i can stream all my non marketplace video and audio through my PC. I'm glad they didn't bundle the HD-DVD drive. If you want HD-DVD by the addon, don't push the cost onto consumers that aren't interested in movies. It's a gaming machine.

I have no motivation to upgrade to this new SKU. If I didn't already own a 360 i would definitely buy an Elite though.

Most of the 360 section news posts are always negative about the 360 and so called rumors, the news writers on the 360 section need to be replaced by writers who have and actually like the 360.

Have you also noticed how any BAD news for the 360 gets like a 100 jump it ups, but any PS3 bad news gets hardly any?, so who is jumping up bad news for 360 posts obviously not 360 users so is it PS3 owners who seem to think they are going to damage the 360 sales in some way by doing it?..

I have the Elite on order, I ignore these pointless kind of news storys and just study the hardware facts and ask people who already have the hardware, every person I have asked with 360 have never had or even heard of the ring of death that only affected the first consoles anyway and of course it beat Sony out of the posts by One year, its only over the net you get the MR I have had 3 360s etc etc, they obviously have never had One but in their weird minds seem to think it is going to change the minds of people about getting a 360..

Downloadable movies will never get as big as MS hopes. Until people can commonly afford fiber optic connections, then downloading movies will not get big.

Fact is, the HD movies on Xbox Marketplace are not even close to the versions of HD DVD and Blu-ray. It looks slightly better then an upscaled DVD.

Not to mention the Elite doesn't support the high def audio formats makes it a sub-par video playback device. The elite only sold well because of the fact that most people were waiting for its release when Microsoft announced it a couple months ago. This will hinder MS as well since people will not buy the Core or Premium and just wait for Elite stock.

well out of 8 of my friends 6 of thenm have had problems and one ms even lost his xbox all this has happened in the last month all of them are going to go out and get the elite no because they ar ms whores but because it gives them what they want .even with the problems .and 2 of them went though 3 ps2's . i love my 360 and i got mine on the first day out i have had a few problems as well but hat is the only bad news and if you can get it fixed or replaced it is all good .

I'm not sure why they rag on MS so much. It's highly obvious this SKU was released to make movie marketplace a more viable option....but if you don't have XBLAMM (ie. all countries except US) then there is really no reason to get this.

These additions and even wi-fi and HDDVD would just make the console more expensive, and do nothing for gaming....like some other machine I know of...

Who needs wifi for gaming? LOL, its just not needed when it comes to gaming. And who needs a blue-ray or hd-dvd player when you can download high def movies/ etc etc from the market place. Games can also be distributed via download, look at steam for pc. I dont need a freaking rom for *****. All i need is an internet connection and a place to download my games and my media. The xbox 360 whether elite or not allows me to do all i want, its that simple. I hate all the haters complaining about the xbox this and that bs. Bunch of haters, Once you start downloading media (movies, games, tv shows etc) you will realize you dont need a blue ray player or an hd-dvd player). Microsoft is doing things the right way, providing people with choices. people that hate on xbox360 dont know anything about the future of media and technology. All consoles are great so quit your hating on them, if you dont like them dont buy them. Honestly the 360 does everything for me and more.

I have loads of cash & absolutely did'nt mine buying one. I might sell my premium on ebay, or I might even use it for a door stop. Elite is for folks w./ the green to buy PS3's but don't wanna & need a little more in the AV dept. than Wii offers. New skus happen all the time, sure it sucks that it happened so fast but nobody twited my arm into getting one. premium owner really should'nt be upset. The elite REALLY only adds value to people who own 1080p sets which tend to be people how have more expendable income. See the cycle?

Why do I need to download movies on PSN if I can watch the superior Blu-ray. Same reason people who own the HD DVD drive probably dont download inferior movies of the Xbox Live marketplace.

Statistics are proof enough that people were waiting for the Elite and not purchasing the premium and core. As soon as rumors were out, sales of the system went down with forums were flooded with elite topics.

People were hoping the elite would fix the problems plaguing current Xbox360s because the fact is, all the consoles before the Elite were low quality.

Upgrades to PCs are simple. I suppose you fall in the bracket of consumers known as 'Morons' with IQs smaler than their shoe sizes. Hard drives cost pennies nowadays, RAm is cheap and graphics cards are just luxuries over £100. Console are good, but even your xbox needs upgrading, but only microsoft limits you to one proprietry hard drive that is 2x the cost of other SATA drive.

just like to point out that the PS3 sold 36,000 in the first month of release here in OZ (yes im in Australia) inspite of the limited games and 1000 bucks pricetag...

the 360 is at 180,000 and it has been out for a year and a half... you can do the math urself if you like...

comparatively the PS3 is not failing in Australia... infact a lot of people are just saving up for it.

1st and last time I will post. I own both systems and I will say this, the PS3 has 1080P out the box standar not a firmware update like 360 did. At the moment only 2 games worth playing on PS3 Fall of Man and Motorstorm. I only play FFXI online on my 360 and thats cause Its the only game I really want to play on 360 besides Lost Planet which i finished and traded back to Gamestop. But when it comes to resolution and graphics PC users have it made no matter what. Also If u all fan boys could stop fighting in blogs and just play games it be a lot better cause at the end of the day wether you win or lose in a blog you still talking ***** on the net. Just go and play games period cause It seems to me you all gamers so stop typing ***** and go play games no matter the console.

Did it not cross the authors mind that the reason a HD-DVD drive isn't in built is so thar MS have their options open if blu ray takes off, or if HD-DVD wins out? where as sony have nailed themselves to Bluray, which aint doing all that great in the UK. To all the people who DEFEND MS for making such a jacktard decision to NOT include Wi-Fi, saying I quote, "Which doesn't help gaming anyway"...You guys just don't get it DO you? WTF can I do with "XBOX LIVE" if I can't connect to the F@#$!ng internet. You know SOME people just can't get access to the Web through the wall (Like me). I have a PSP, which cost $250 back in 05', and I have a better Wi-Fi card in their than in some computers. I honestly don't think it would take MICROSOFT much out of their way to put at least a mediocre W-Fi- card in their "ELITE" Xbox 360 model, and not charging $100 just to have that capability. THAT is one of my reasons for buying a PS3 (The second being MGS4). The cold truth is, the PS3 and the 360 are roughly the same price (Probably even more) when you add the Wi-Fi and HD-DVD add ons to the 360 to make it "Equal" to the PS3's Hardware. And the PS3 just plain looks better, inside and out (and so do the games).

The Xbox 360 is already known for High Definition gaming since it first came out.I won't need Elite because I have the premium.The elite has the same color as the original Xbox,PS2 and PS3.I just don't understand why there's an elite version of the same system all of the sudden.It seems like the 360 hasn't been here that long and now they have the elite version of the system.Oh well it's Microsoft's decision on what they want to do.Xbox 360 is still a better system in my opinion.When it comes to HD gaming it doesn't matter rather you have an PS3 or an Xbox 360 you'll still get HD gaming either way.
