Xbox 360 Core bundle - Image 1After Amazon listed a certain Microsoft Xbox 360 Arcade Console item for pre-order (the product page has been taken down though), rumors have been going around about the mysterious bundle said to hit the shelves this October 23. Even Toys 'R' Us posted the same thing, and GameSpot's latest Rumor Control feature took note.

According to what we've heard before, Xbox 360 Arcade is supposed to replace the Xbox 360 Core bundle. It's tagged with the Core's price at US$ 279.99, and is expected to come with five free Xbox Live titles and a wireless controller. GameSpot added that a 256MB memory card is also to be included.

When GameSpot asked Microsoft about discontinuing production of Core units, the reply read:

We are still manufacturing the console included in the Core SKU. We believe $279 is a great entry point for next-generation gaming and a SKU at that price will remain an important member of the Xbox 360 family of consoles.

If Xbox 360 Arcade is going to be the Core bundle's replacement, it's not difficult to imagine that the "console included in the Core SKU" packed with a new controller and free Xbox Live games is what the Arcade bundle will be. We'll keep this in the rumor bin for now, but it sure sounds like October 23 will be sweet for Microsoft fans and everyone else planning to grab a new console.

The Wii has no option for a hard drive, or anything else remotely competitive for the price. By that logic, it's far more useless then.

It seems Microsoft is going after the Wii's sales with the new core system. Since Microsoft actually makes enough of them (and Wiis probably will cost more due to mysterious supply issues) they should do pretty good this season.

Hopefully the Wiis luck will run out very soon. Hmm only $30 more for real HD support, lots more (and better quality) games available, the best online gaming, 3 year warranty, upscaling DVD, and far better (cheaper) downloadable games!

At least with a Wii you can get some "free" $5 silicone controller jackets. Go Wii!
