XBL data suggest Halo 3 didn't boost Xbox 360 sales

Halo 3 - Image 1Some recent info from the broadband solutions company Sandvine implies that the release of Halo 3 didn't help much with the popularity of the Xbox 360. According to their data, while there is an increase in peak bandwidth in Xbox Live traffic, the number of hosts remain the same.

The gathered data suggests that the game didn't pull in new gamers, it just made old gamers play a lot more. In turn, this suggests that the Halo 3 release didn't pull in as much sales in Xbox 360 consoles as was predicted.

When GigaOM asked for a comment, Sandvine replied that this is not a direct conclusion. They "do not track the number of consoles or whether the number of hosts are new or existing [ones]."

The data merely suggests that the increased traffic (of about 200% at peak times) can be "attributed to existing users" since there's no increase in the number of gamers. However, the Halo 3 data was also compared to the ones gathered from Gears of War, whose release caused a surge in both bandwidth and users in XBL.

Some theories were suggested to explain the bandwidth surge and the stagnant player base: (1) New 360 owners may still be playing the single-player campaign which means they don't go online and so don't contribute to the data numbers, (2) Halo 3 appealed to the fanbase of the earlier Halo games which explains why the playerbase remained the same.

Also, according to the latest data from VG Chartz, the latest hardware sales for the Xbox 360 only increased by 19% on the week of Halo 3's release but as they point out, the reasonable conclusion is that the "Halo 3 boost has already occurred."

This does not explain the small attendance rate in Xbox Live though. However, one of the best qualities that Halo 3 boasts is its long lasting playability factor so perhaps the real pull of the game will only manifest over time.

A good deal of people that wanted a 360 for Halo 3 sure as hell didn't wait till now with all the good games out already.

Of course most of the existing install base are the ones that bought the game it has sold around 4 million copies in a week. 90% of that will be existing 360 owners. But I think it would be very silly to presume (like this article does) that 360 hardware isn't going to get a big boost in sales. We've already had reports from retailers of increased sales. As well as reports of the 360 outselling the Wii in the week of the Halo 3 launch. And also, Halo 2 uses Xbox Live. So people switching over wouldn't even be detected by this bull***** report.

lol

"And also, Halo 2 uses Xbox Live. So people switching over wouldn't even be detected by this bull***** report." Yeah they would, your just being ignorant. People only buy a console for good names, not over hyped ones.

Exactly. That's why no one buys a PS3.

Xbox Live traffic is Xbox Live traffic. There is no way they could tell if someone was playing Halo 2 online on an Xbox 360 or an original box. How am I ignorant for stating that? It's a *****ing McFact you *****ing Mc*****head. Here's some Australian Stats that show the trend of what's possible with US sales. * Xbox 360 hardware sales increased by 55 percent over the w/e 23 September * Xbox 360 hardware sales for September increased by 158 percent over August * Xbox 360 was the number one selling console for September * Xbox 360 held 31 percent total market share for September, more than any other platform * Xbox 360 hardware, software and accessories generated over $30m in September, over 50 percent more than any other platform http://www.itwire.com/content/view/14759/532/

360

Halo does help sales but putting it into figures will always be a point of argument. When the first xbox was finally bundled with Halo 2 sales increased. The % is difficult to determine as it was a holiday period strategy and in a holiday period sales always increase. Halo will without doubt one day be released as a trilogy box set and if bundled with the 360 will help increase sales. Once again it will be difficult to determine an exact % increase. What is important is that games as halo and many other games are produced for xbox as it is the games that gamers want. Games exclusive to a particular console will always help increase the user base if the game is successful. For the 360 to really jump by a larger % MS need to get the gpu and the cpu down to smaller and more economical production costs. If this can be done and the 360 could drop by 30% in price then sales will increase dramatically. For many families the console is still too expensive regardless of product (MS or Sony) Most families do have a PC and games are readily available for this platform. Many people already have cheap solutions to get the PC signal to the tv screen and the use a console is not a pre-requisite for gaming in the living room.

HAHA

Well i should have known it wasn't going to increase the sales this early. The fact is we need to wait a month b4 knowing the full increase, man people are stupid. Though since its a long term game its going to be awhile to actually see the full increase like i stated above. 2 weeks aren't going to show it people.

So if Halo3 didn't sell any more 360's, I wonder why all the local gamestops in my district are completely...COMPLETELY sold out of all 360's, new and used...for the very first time since launch. Oh, it must've been the new arcade game, Tetris Splash, that boosted sales.

I disagree

I have like 3 or 4 friend who bought a 360 just for halo 3, you may not think that is alot, but if thats only of the people i know. I highly doubt that it didnt increase sales. If it didnt, i think it will soon, or in the long run.

none

even if halo 3 hasnt made a increase in sales as of yet, which sounds ridiculous, it will by xmas time.
by Mister Common Sense - 2007-10-08 05:57:21
Didn't boost sales?

Due to the lack of high speed internet service in my area I can't even play online at my house. I'm playing single player or co-op with friends most of the time. What a BS report.
