X360 HD-DVD To Sell for $375? |

Ó
Looks like the Xbox 360 won't be having a holiday price cutdown, but don't fret 'coz retailers say that starting November, an HD-DVD and console package will be offered instead.
According to GamesIndustry's sources, Microsoft is planning to sell the HD-DVD drive at £199, which is roughly $375 for us in the US, along with two HD-DVD movies. Critics say that the movie support for next-gen consoles could've been PS3's edge, but the X360's HD-DVD package could sell for a $100 cheaper than the PS3's Blu-ray. In addition, Microsoft has just recently reduced the price of the X360's core package after retailers have similarly lowered their prices.
The sources also said that Microsoft will probably package the console and the HD-DVD for GBP 400 or 589 Euro -– which is roughly US $753, and that the selling price could even go as low as around US $705. Yep, $705 for BOTH the console and the movie player. And with the PS3's further delay in its launch, well...Microsoft is looking to their SKUs to be sold over the holidays, while there's no competition.

Microsoft is giving you a choice to buy an HD drive...sony is not.
you can say, "screw HD" and just buy the system for 400 bucks.
with sony all you can do is pay the 500-600 bucks.
to some...a few hundred bucks is alot...which creates the flame wars.
funny to just sit back and watch as you buy the two great consoles yourself.

QJ or at least the poster of this rubbish..
CAN"T THINK LOGICALLY!
you can't just convert a UK price and expect it to be that in the US as said before...

unless they make the add-on 150-200 bucks, its not gonna sell very well. HD-DVD is slipping in their plan to get into the market.

And since when is US $705 LOW? o.o'

"WTF!!!! They promised low price of hddvd add-on!!!"
Oh but they kept their promise. It's going to be as "low" as $705. =p
"Now it looks like it was bad idea to rush with buying 360... If this turns out to be true I will sell my 360 by the end of the year and buy ps3. "
I'm not a fan of Xbox, but thats a pretty odd reason to switch. Get the console you ewant for the games, not the mediaplayer.
"It’s so damn expensive and hddvd for 360 won’t even be supported in games ((((("
Yeah I'm sick iof hearing how developers can't fit things on DVD's or have to compress graphics and cut corners.
Upgraded media storage has always gone hand in hand with a next gen console. Microsoft are the first to ignore that. And it's going to bite them in the @ss.

Well it's easy to talk the talk, compaines like MS have to walk the walk. What do you suggest MS should have done, choose Sony's Blu-ray drive for the 360? Because contrary to what some people here may think, HD-DVD would NOT have been suitable for a next-gen console. :|

So whats the advantage? They have had 1 year to ship almost 6 million Xbox360s out by the time the PS3 will be launched.
So why didnt they include it? Fact being that since no one really knows which format will win, microsoft didnt want to take the chance to pick the format that would lose.
Disadvantages? Space Space Space and more Space. With games increasing Size with time, the Space Issue will definitly bite the Xbox360 into using multiple disks. PC games compress all their files in containers and thats why they never seem to be bigger then a DVD but when you decompress all those files, they get much bigger then a DVD9. HL2 for example. The single player game itself is compressed to around 4.5GB, Decompress all those files and well you almost double that size.
Fear Combat is a 1.85Gb download and when its installed its 3.45Gb of hard drive space. thats just for the "Multiplayer" Only. Fear for the Xbox360 will be on a DVD9 im sure and will use all of that space. They might possibly have to downgrade some stuff to make it fit.
Everyone can talk all they want but I just provided proof that games will break the DVD9 barrier by the end of 2006. DVD9 was passed months ago for the PC, the Xbox360 will soon follow. With no hard drive, Xbox360 doesnt have the option to highly compress files like the install files found on PC games.

I suggest Ms should have put HD-DVD in their 360, it did not have to be blue ray like you say. this is the same with dreamcast they chose to stay with cd format to save money and got ***** back 2 years later, the same will happen to the 360 which is a sad.

The one point almost EVERYONE seems to overlook about drives is that it's not JUST about capacity, it's also about transer speed, and in this respect HD-DVD is NOT GOOD ENOUGH! (Sorry to shout but it's true! ;)).
The Blu-ray 2x drive in the PS3 has a slower transfer rate than the DVD 12x drive in the 360, making it more like the equivalent of a DVD 8x (and it is rated as such in the specs). Blu-ray 1x would have been even worse, with half the transfer speed, giving it the speed of DVD 4x.
Blu-ray 1x and HD-DVD 1x have similar transfer speeds, but there are NO HD-DVD 2x drives at the moment, the fastest speed is still only 1x, which means such a drive would be about at worse 1/3rd the speed of the DVD 12x drive in the XBox 360, meaning everything will take up to 3 times longer to load!!! Having more space is great, but DVD 4x speed is not great, especially when it would add atleast $100 to the price of the console.
So come on, even the most sceptical of you have to admit that such a slow drive not good enough for next-gen games. Hence HD-DVD whilst perfect for HD movies, it will not good enough as a storage medium for next-gen games until faster drives appear in the future (2x, 4x etc). Too late for the 360.
MS were therefore left with two choices, to use SONY'S Blu-ray drive, or to use DVD.
So, isn't it obvious now why they had to stick with DVD? ;)

So ps3 doesn't have the edge because the entire PS3 system with blu-ray that is used for movies and games is $125 more than Microsofts HD-DVD drive add-on that only plays movies. Oh and just having the drive is useless so you have to buy a 360 system in order to use it wich then brings you to $675 with a core 360 and $775 with premium. But you have a choice, with Microsoft.
1. Buy the 360 and no HD-DVD and play games on DVD-9s wich in a year or two will be multiple discs, it's the truth and it will hurt certain games. And not be able to watch HD movies.
2.Buy the 360 and HD-DVD drive which cost more than the "premium" PS3 and yes watch HD movies but still play games on DVD-9s.
3.Buy either PS3 and watch HD movies and play games on Blu-ray with no constraints on space or having multiple discs. And the games costs the same as 360's.
Awesome choices huh?

I'm glad that i don't buy the Xbox360 wet. Ps3 is a better choice.
PS: CND Prices (canada)
First here's a run down of the Xbox 360:
Xbox 360 Standard: $399.99
Gold Xbox Live Subscription: At least $49.99
Wireless Networking Adapter: $99.99
Second Wireless Controller: $49.99
Two Play and Charge Kits: $19.99 times two.
HD-DVD: $199*
Total: $839.94
That, of course, didn't include the High Def TV or any games.
So here's the best I can figure for the Playstation 3:
Playstation 3 standard: $599
PS3 Network Platform: Free
Wireless Networking Adapter: Built-in
Blu-ray player: Built-in
Second Wireless Controller: $49.99*
Two charge Kits: $19.99 times two*
Total: $688.97

"The sources also said that Microsoft will probably package the console and the HD-DVD for GBP 400"
So lets translate it back, Xbox 360 (Core I'm guessing) + HD DVD for $400 (HD-DVD = $100) is actually a nice deal. Oh btw, I've talked to a nice British guy and he said that they basically replace $ with a £ (assuming it works the other way too) so its all good. And a HD-DVD for Xbox 360 addon alone would be $200. So maybe that's the bundle that MS is so secretive about. Let's just wait till X06 folks, no reason to argue right now. All this is just merely speculations.
