WMP 11 Can't Stream Video to The Xbox

WMP 11You may have seen this quote flying around news sites: "If you have a home network (wired or wireless), you can use Windows Media Player 11 to stream the contents of your library to networked devices. For example, if you have an Xbox 360 or other digital media receiver (DMR), you can use Windows Media Player to stream music, pictures, and videos from your computer to that device."

This has been looking like a great fix for the Xbox's limited video streaming options, because for a long time, we've needed to turn to hacks and workarounds just to get video to and from the 360 to the PC.

Well, not to burst your bubble but according to the good folks at arstechnica, this isn't exactly as good as it sounds. The good news is that you can use Windows Media Player to stream to an Xbox. The bad news is that while WMP does support Windows Media Connect for pictures and music, video is not supported.

Sigh. Oh well, back to the hacks I guess.

Why?

I just have one question for Microsoft... WHY NOT? It could only help the 360. Are they worried bout some kind of exploit? They shouldn't. Every system will be exploited no matter what. So might as well give the fans what they want so they don't have to exploit it to do so... /rant

DUH!!!

hey dont get me wrong. my fav counsol ever is the 360. but hey this is M$ were talking about. why would they jeopardize an opportunity to make money via WMC enabled PC's, or just WMC self install cd's which are no less than 110$$, by having you stream videos for "free" from WMP 11. CMON with M$ its all about the $$$ which sucks for us, but still you gotta remember theve got a business to

im not too sure

im not to sure but i remember reading an article about the new version saying that it may actually require a update for the 360 itself to enable the video part of the ability... so im more inclined to believe that for now you will only be able to do pics and music and when the update is out then you will be able to do video

I've heard on various websites that the reason its not working, is cause the xbox 360 is not able to support the video streaming, but, the next dashboard update will include the ability to stream video. Sounds about right but I don't know.

Would be great

Would be great, cause it's possible anyway. So why not officially support it and get more people out there to buy a xbox360 with such a cool feature...

I've heard similar

at the very least, I've been told MS wants this to be a feature with vista. Makes sense, then everyone will upgrade, it may just be it's not possible with WM11 + xp. and of course a 360 will need an update for it to work.

i think microsoft knows we want divx on xbox 360 but will come up with some gay program on vista to make you buy it, just like they did with Windows Xp Media Center Edition. They know we want it, and they will give it to us, but at a certain price. IF they add divx support to vista, it won't reallly mattter to me, cause i was planning on getting it anyways.

What hacks?

How do you guys make video work on XPSP2? About the streaming from WMP11 ithink they mean Vista too since it has built in MCE! Cheers MS

ugghhh

fu**in MS........... come on your killing me. I guess iam going to have to buy a ps3 to do this. Its just so simple I mean the regular Xbox can do it with ease. Did they learn anything from the last 5 years of modifications done on systems?????

m$

im sure theyre doing this so people might go out and buy a MC pc.... well, m$, i have a mac and im not going to go buy a new comp just to do this, but what i will do is buy a $50 cd to install on my mac that lets me stream any codec for pics, vid, music, w/e.....so if you come out with that, ill be more than happy to hand you my $$$, but for now, i guess were both screwed on this one, i dont get videos, and youre not getting my money

Yeah...

It's ok jayhawker09. MS doesn't really give too much of a sh*t about Mac users. Can't say that I blame them either.
